Awesome review. Just ordered one. Glad to hear Civ5 works well on it (as that was a key concern for me). Planning to flash it with Ubuntu + Steam + Civ5 for Linux.
Waseem Khan The buttons on the clickpad are better that is there are clickable buttons on 250 .. Expect a better screen and there is no keyboard flex on these. Plus with the 5th gen processors those may get insane 24 hour battery life.
the benchmark of tech vid reviews! thanks lisa. looking for a laptop for the gf and had to check it was not a turkey. it is a lenovo though so we know its going to last 20 years.

I don't know why I can't resist Thinkpad brand. These are so absolutely reliable. After looking n numbers of reviews on other brands I am going for Thinkpad again. These are just best. And X240 is totally amazing. In fact I was looking for the tablet version of X series laptops, but those are discontinued.
I've just bought this for £130 256gb ssd 8gb ram. I use it for movies on the go, my DJ software, and Microsoft office. Super portable with good battery life. Don't waste you money on new budget 2020 laptops if you have basic needs. Thinkpad for life
I don't like how Lenovo is trying to streamline their computers. I want buttons! They can do this with their other line of computers, but they really should've left the Thinkpad series alone. Typing this on my X220, I'm deeply saddened.
ThinkPad X61s ,extra video.....The laptop I still use in 2019 is called the 2007 Lenovo ThinkPad X61s and works flawlessly as a Swiss watch, with an installed ... win 10 system, for which they post video on my channel.
@MobileTechReview Thank you for your review here, and even though it's from 4 years ago, it's a big help to me. I am thinking of picking up an X240 (refurbished) from TigerDirect for $299, I only want it for the once or twice a year I go out of country to check emails and Facebook while there. The new touchpad is not an issue for me, will pick up a USB mouse and use that. My question is about that "mini DisplayPort", is that an HDMI output, or something else?
Hey, you are doing good stuff, informative videos. Thanks! I do like my x240 with i5 4300U and 8 gb of ram, but what upgrades would be suggested by you. I love it, but I need it faster and powerful in 2020, almost 2021. I would appreciate your advice.
I fucking love this machine. 16GB onboard SSD is perfect for my Kali Linux boot, then the main SSD is my Windows boot. Cannot ask for anything more in a portable admin machine.
Hi Lisa, Thanks for the detailed review. What about Programming guys..for C++,Science heavy applications do you suggest this? If not can you point any other notebook,Please?
Hi Lisa, thanks for the great review. I would love to see your review on the T440s and the New X1 Carbon as well. Between the T440s and the New X1 Carbon, which would you personally prefer? Having tried the New X1 Carbon keyboard, is it any of an issue for you - adaptive keys, new home/end position, key travel?
No, Lisa there are too few USB ports the same as on the T440 series and mini display could have been ousted for HDMI as more projectors and monitors had these from around 2016. VGA/phono fully overcame 'legacy' needs. Single RAM is inexcusable in this price bracket but was improved later. In my reply to Mr Ferguson below I explain how this model and the too basic T440 meanness in I/O led to significant losses of customers in the Europe-wide education market. Education in Europe is run by state government and therefore is a secure and massive buyer. Whereas the T420 and X230 had maintenance hatches the full base removal required in these models used up excessive IT staff time and very large state education buyers changed more to Dell (also in the process of going minimalistic over time) then increasingly to companies building on Revo and Asus chassis and based in Europe, notably the UK, Poland and Germany. HP quality issues ruled that company out and Dell resolved some quality issues. By the time of my retirement from education procurement work mainly in the UK in 2021 Lenovo had lost its former reputation, Dell cleverly improved value in the sub-Latitude band and 'finisher' companies as mentioned had the biggest share inclusive of national support and spares deals. As a matter of fact, in the last 5 years Apple was establishing a good share of the state education market with sensible prices and national support hubs -- not 'genius bars'. As a work life fan of Think Pads I maintained and upgraded my personal 'antiques' but lamented the decline of suitable products from Lenovo for the whole education range.
i upgraded from x230 to x240 for the backlight keyboard and better screen... but the real disappointment is the x240 only has 1 ram slot @ SDR, so 1600mhz ram runs at 800mhz this makes the x240 feel slightly slower in general performance than the x230 and HP 2570p ivy bridge machines with 2 ram slots for DDR rate. however, it still is a great notebook 😎
Yes, single RAM slot and lack of a third USB slot or HDMI ruled this out of my school's shortlisting even in refurbished bulk buying. Lenovo quite simply overpriced these and the T440 series at the wrong time and has since lost a significant customer base in the UK and Europe. We noticed some slack quality issues too which have not improved by 2022.
I know this is really old, but was hoping someone could explain this to me. If with the 2 three cell batteries the laptop gets 7 hours use, how does the 3+6 cell get up to 20? Surely it should be more like 11.5?
The answer is quite simple, you cannot compare number of cells, because 6 cell battery have roughly 1.5 times larger capacity cells. So,having 9 cells (3+6) instead of 6 (3+3) doesn't mean you have 1.5 larger capacity, because, when measured in capacity, you have 95.5 Wh (23.5+72) instead of 47 Wh (23.5+23.5), which translate to roughly 2 times more capacity, so instead of 7 hours runtime, you get around 14-15 hours.
hi, it is nice to show us how loud the speakers can be if you can turn on the full volume of the speakers.i have a thinkpad x230T, and it is loud enough to watch videos without extended speakers. what do you think the x240 speakers are if you consider thinkpad x230table as 100%?

MobileTechReview Lenovo ThinkPad Discount for Father days On: amzn.to/1F0TsSx . full review on the all new Lenovo ThinkPad X250. reviews the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 business Ultrabook. The latest X series 12.5" laptop from Lenovo might not be super-thin but it packs a lot of ports and expansion including 2 USB 3.0 ports, a mini DisplayPort, VGA, RJ45 Ethernet, a full size SD card slot, Express Card 34mm, Smart card reader and optional 3G micro SIM card slot. It runs on Intel Haswell 4th gen Ultrabook CPUs, from the Core i3-4010U
X230 is better with 3 USB, hard buttons for vol/mic and mouse, user replaceable battery up to 9 cell, full wattage CPU will run circles around the ULV X240, 16GB ram not 8 like X240, Easy upgrades on X230, with the x240 its very hard to upgrade HD and hard to pry off entire bottom on X240. Everything that was great about thinkpad is now gone. Clickpad is horrid with many unregistered clicks and it's loud. X240 has fan noise and can over heat. X230 is very quiet and almost no heat at all. Even the reviews on Lenovo's own website give it just over 2 stars with many business users returning these in droves. Better bid on a X230 like I did on ebay because the prices are rising fast. I got one put an expresscard in it and now have 5 USB and nearly 10 hours with 9 cell. Much faster machine then the new one and I also got the docking station for it. This is a total failure for the business people who use thinkpad. I can see maybe doing this crap on other lines but not the thinkpad. Unbelievable. And the touch pad on the X240 is basically unusable for many users.. its that bad. Also many reports with blue screens with normal windows updates. Many reports of freezes etc.. This is a catastrophic failure of a very poor design. Believe me, do your research. The X240 is a very expensive machine if you do just a few upgrades on the lenovo site and you will be majorly dissapointed at the money wasted on it. Even the T and E series now have the same horrid clickpad. Like the user said below me, RIP thinkpad. They just killed it. And they were one of the few oem's with increased sales in a soft PC market. Now they are building compromised Windows 8 garbage systems like everyone else. And when they see their market share drop they won't believe how.. even though all their business customers are screaming at them that they don't like the changes.
I love th X Series, but this ws probably the worst one. Most of them shipped with Windows 8, which was a bad version. And the lack of buttons made the trackpoint almost impossible to use. Switching off the trackpad helps, but a lot of users ended up swapping in an X250 keyboard and trackpad to make it more usable. This is 10 years old, so it will be cheap now, but you're still better off with a later model. an X270 is much quicker, has a similar keyboard and better trackpad and buttons, as well as better ports. An X280 is much thinner and lighter, although you lose the upgradable RAM and swappabe battery (and the full-size drive bay--you have to use an M.2 SSD). The X280 also needs a dongle for wired Ethernet. Even so, the X270 or X280 are better choices now and both are almost as cheap now.
Hey Lisa Gade Lisa thank you for your review :) Really enjoy all your reviews :0 I am looking for a light laptop. I use powerpoint, word, internet most of the time and I watch movies and play Sims 4. I have no problem with new keyboard design, but its quality is really awful. I bought my X230 in early 2013, and keycaps started to fall off one after another since late 2013. Now my f1 key, letter A key, left shift key, and ? key are gone, especially sad as most of these are not even frequently used keys. You should think twice if you're a heavy typist or programmer.
Hey Lisa just letting you know, you are my first stop on youtube. Thanks for the down to earth real reviews.

ThinkPad R.I.P. :((
i developed a technique of removing the battery by myself using my mouth and my toes

How to enable touch pad if human interface device cannot show in device manager???
Hey Lisa Gade Lisa thank you for your review :) Really enjoy all your reviews :0
I am looking for a light laptop. I use powerpoint, word, internet most of the time and I watch movies and play Sims 4. Right now I own Dell XPS L521X ((i7 16G 1TG (is it how you say... lol so bad with computers)), it's a great laptop but it's too heavy for me..
Do you think I should get this one or x1 carbon?
Thank you in advance!
I miss the old keyboard :(

Hi Lisa, I've been watching your videos for years :) I'm interested in buying an HP Spectre 13 X2 so I turned to your channel but couldn't find any info, can you maybe review it sometime? Thanks
How the sim card slot works, can you explain me?
Just put your sim card into it and it'll have your sim operator's connectivity.
Would there be any issue if I replace the RAM with a 16 GB ram? Can this run programming softwares like Visual Studio? Can this run virtual machines?
My question too
A question: on my x220 i can have two hard disks: one in the SATA slot, one in the mSATA slot. Is this still feasible on the x240 ?
And by the way, I don't like the battery popping out from the under the keyboard, i prefear the old models with battery popping out from the back. It was a classic thinkpaddish feature.
How come I can't select a fingerprint reader for the x240 on the lenovo website?

220 or 230 better for drawing and come w stylus?
How do I turn on the touch screen??
I have no problem with new keyboard design, but its quality is really awful. I bought my X230 in early 2013, and keycaps started to fall off one after another since late 2013. Now my f1 key, letter A key, left shift key, and ? key are gone, especially sad as most of these are not even frequently used keys. You should think twice if you're a heavy typist or programmer.
