How does Verdi produce so many great overtures? This is one of his very best.
Italian ouvertures are a must. They make us want to stand up from chair even though we'll sit for hours for the rest of the opera.

why dont you call it Vespri Sciliani like in italian? it sounds better than the english or french one
It was written for the Paris Opera in French with the libretto by Eugene Scribe. The Italian version didn't get retitled "I Vespri Siciliani" until 1861 after having to set the opera in Portugal before the Italian reunification started taking place. Prior to that, the Italian version was known as "Giovanna de Guzman" among others.
Because the french version is the original version.
