i just found that my middle pickup doesnt work, after i bought my guitar 20 years
Congratulations!!
replace it. plus it'll force you to be hands on with your guitar which is always a fun thing to learn

The middle pickup on a strat is insanely underrated. I would absolutely use a strat with just a middle pickup
Awesome!
For years my goto guitar was a tele, that I had installed a start mid pickup in the neck position, and a twang king in the bridge position. Loved it
I feel the same way about the middle pickup on my old Tele Deluxe
It does get used in funk. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I hear it in some Bruno Mars stuff.
@@invigatron A strat middle pickup in the neck position is just a neck pickup...
There's nothing inherently different about the middle pickup in a strat, they get their different sounds from their positions.
The percussion from that opening riff sounds amazing!! 👌

Fabulous Thunderbirds era Jimmie Vaughan got incredible guitar tone from his middle pickup, which was wired wide open with no tone control.
Ha, I do the same. I didn't know he does that but I have no-load pots in my Strat and use that sound often. It gives more nuance when you touch the strings lightly.

I honestly don't know why the middle pickup on strats get scoffed at. It has the best well-rounded tone.
@@eldritch6871 exactly, and the position 2 and 4 tones everyone drools over wouldn’t be possible at all if it wasn’t for the middle pickup!
I always use my neck and mid pickup on my Starts together . I almost never use the bridge pickup . After years and years of Strat playing , I find myself using a Tele more and more . At 72 years old I find myself using less treble , more Bass , and going for those pretty notes and chords !
@JM Coulon SD cool Rails or the Hot Rail humbuckers work well.
The bridge pickup in Strats is not great. That’s why when I finally bought a Strat, I made sure it had a humbucker in the bridge.
The only time I hear of the bridge being used it's with the middle pickup.
@JM Coulon yeah, changing to a hot rail or a lil 59 or something is really handy for taming the high end you already get from being in the bridge position, along with having no tone control usually. Adding a single coil on top of all that is really just painful to listen too when clean
I'm convinced this guy could make any guitar with any pickup sound good

In an article I read about why the Les Paul Jr sounds so good it was mentioned that the part that people forget is that there is less wired circuit to cause the tone to be hampered in the way that a guitar's tone can be when there is more than 1 pickup wired up in the guitar. The bridge pickup on most Strats I've come across never really grabbed me unless the owner had be very judicious in picking out the pickups for each position so that each position could stand on its own merits sonically.
I'm perpetually amazed at how many guitars you own with so much genuine wear on them. I have one electric guitar that I play everyday and it doesn't have even slightly as much wear as all of yours. you must never stop playing!
It could just be down to the kind of finish your guitar has. Something like Polyurethane will keep a guitar looking as good as new a lot longer than one with a Nitrocellulose finish and is much less susceptible to damage. If you want a guitar to look old and beat up, you'll want to get one with a Nitro finish and play the hell out of it.
Kanji guitar is made like a vintage guitar. 5 years old... it looks like a vintage guitar. Any new guitar uses different paint material that it stays like many many years!
Another way for a guitar to age is getting a satin finished guitar. Glossy finishes tend to be way thicker
Man such a flex those legendary guitars!! So blessed 🙌🏽

On 4th January 1987 I bought a brand new '57 re-issue made in Japan strat, but the serial number showed it was made in 1986, obviously as I purchased it in week 1 of that year. I still have it, and a few years ago, I gave it a service and decided to not use any of the electrics except for the bridge pickup attached directly to the output socket. I also screwed the pickup directly to the guitar body and the jack socket directly to the body without the pick guard. I had it in that configuration for a few years. It is now back to its original self. You have inspired me to try the other pickups on their own. Thank you Sir.
I have always loved the middle pickup, you have this rich, balanced tone, with 'spank', interesting!

Middle pickup is vastly underrated, for sure. My next custom guitar will be an axe with humbucker bridge and middle pickups, with the middle pickup moved slightly up toward neck. But in a Strat with a hotter than standard pickup compliment, the middle pickup has a tone for solos that's unmatched. Smooth, singing, super melodic tone. Works great with heavy overdrive.

Lenny Kaye from Patti Smith’s band has been playing a single middle pickup Strat since the 1970’s. He calls it the “Unicaster”. In fact, I believe Fender did a short run signature model that looks exactly like this.

Strats...in the last 10 years, I've gone from being a 5 way switch guy to 3 way switch guy and using the middle pickup as my base sound. But, I did also change to a linear volume pot at the same time. Also run a tone control on the bridge pickup.

It definitely can be liberating to have fewer choices! I really love the sound of a neck & bridge pickup together, though, so I've been hesitating to pare down to one pickup.

I modified my strat, by removing one tone pot, with master tone and master volume, moved volume down to the second hole, put a push-push switch that when on, with the selector on position 1, connects neck and bridge pickups, and in position 2 connects all 3 pickups. Do you want to hear a perfect funky tone? Neck and bridge pickups together on a strat.
As an almost intermediate, I‘m now on the way exploring multiple different wiring options and combinations on guitars. I like to work on guitars too, to understand better in depth how it's working beside getting better tone and playability.
Next I intent to explore the possibilities with just one pickup, one volume one tone only. I think then I will learn better the influence of picking place, pick angle, pick attack, in combination with the two pots.
Thank you for your explanations!👍🏼👏🏼

This inspired me to make a middle p90 only zombie tele out of my attempt to make 3 pickup tele. Really love the results. It really does feel and sounds free somehow.
Doug Martsch of the band Built To Spill has been playing a strat with only the middle pickup since the early 90s. He never removed the neck and bridge pickups, but he removed the selector switch instead. In the studio and live, he's always just used that one pickup. Agree that sometimes less is more! He's no Tomo, but he still sounds pretty good!

I own a 1966 Duo Sonic and two Music Master guitars (1975 and 1977). Both Fender models are underrated by the guitar community but can produce great tones. The single pickup Music Masters are my favorites. You are right, they make me work harder to get more music out of the simple set ups and I learn more. Also, the single pickup guitars seem to have a better tone.

I'm not sure if I get the secret about the middle pickup but man, I love seeing your videos! So much learning and so much fun!!
I think the point is how simpler doesn't mean less versatile, so using one pickup not only for practice but also for just generally getting a good sound is really good too.

Having only one pickup forces you to learn how to use the vol and tone knobs plus where you pick is very important. Country back by the saddles and funky quack closer to the neck with everything else in between.
A good strat middle pickup is in the perfect position of harmonic overtones, has a natural boost in mid range, has the bite of the bridge and clarity with bass response of the neck pickup. It’s the one thing that people miss when they play a strat. Thanks for focusing in on a strat voice that is great for rhythm and lead sounds.

awesome tones!! Nothing like the tone from a middle and neck pickup together
Thank you!
I think the 65 strat pickup in the middle is the best clean I have ever heard. It's such a beautiful, unreal clean tone.
Awesome!
While being a single coil the middle pickups offers a lot of the sonic caracteristic people usually search in the bridge position of HSS configuration.
The sound has a nice amplitude, is full of mid, there is still a lot of attack. There is a lot of contrast between the strat three pickups. One could clearly go through lot of songs jumping only from the bridge to the middle or from the middle to the neck.
I think it is over looked because of its position on the pickups switch. In the heat of a solo, it is pretty tough to jump from the mid to bridge (or the neck) and back to the mid in a flip of the hand.
So biomecanics is likely a reason why it is left aside, has it is left aside, players find more practical to have bigger sounding bridge pickups that bridge the toanl gap between neck and the (a litte to britlle) vanilla strat bridge pickup.
I think it could be adressed this way:
Put the bridge and neck on a 3 or 5 swith and have a push-push swith on the volume that allow to go from whatever position is selected on the swith to the middle pickups on its own. That way you can execute safely while you play.
Going further away from strat, for people playing with healthey amount of distortion all the time and sticking to humbucker, I wonder if they would be served better by a middle pickup than a neck pickup.
It might be even truer once you throw in low tuning.
Thanks for sharing!

My bridge and neck are dead so I have been forced to fall in love with the middle pick up. It is very touch sensitive. You can really control your sound if you are forced in position to challenge your playing. It’s like an chef working with the local ingredients. Sometimes boundaries birth design language.
Limitation makes amazing effect!
The strat I have was pre-owned and I'm pretty sure the middle pickup either wasn't put in right or is busted cause it sounds really quiet and like its through a tunnel. I have a kit to sauter or however you spell it- is it possible to replace it myself? I got steady hands.
if the pickup is lower down then you can raise it up to gain more volume with the screws either side of the pickup. If the pickup is raised and volume still sounds rubbish, I would take a note of the wiring that its using to each pot then wire the new pickup exactly the same way, if the problem still occurs then the wiring is the issue.
Solder for future reference
Easy! How about this video?

Everyone should experience the joy of a single pickup guitar. There’s so much you can do with the tone and volume pots.
A middle pickup only ES-335/ES-330 is another great one, and the vintage examples are the least expensive in that configuration.
Why shouldn´t you be able to experience the same thing on a dual PU guitar, if you you just select one of the PU´s ?

I just transferred from acoustic to electric guitar. I don't know how to properly use the tone knobs, Trebble, bass, overdrive and reverb. I just can't find the right tone. It always seems that the tone is off. Pls make a video about. It'll be a great help
Well what kind of electric guitar are we talking about ? Is it single coil pickups or humbuckers ? Imo don't try to mess too much with the guitar knobs at first, have everything on 10 in your guitar, and try sculpting the EQ from the amp. Start with all of the EQ off or at halfway, then add/subtract things little by little accordingly. Reverb you don't want too much but you don't want a dry sound either, just enough to make your tone "big", have a slight slapback. Use your ears! There's no panacea you just have to sit down with your gear, mess with it and find a tone you like. Also maybe do some research on reddit to find people with similar gear you might get specific tips from them!
@@nabilkabbadj7759Thanks a lot dude. Will keep that in mind
The beauty of the middle pickup is that picking in different areas gives different tones. Closer to the neck is one and closer to the bridge is another and moving the pick between these positions are lots of different tones.

For some time I've wanted a loaded Strat pick guard with the neck and middle pick-up only wired with a 3 way switch one volume one tone. I almost never use the bridge pickup. It only sounds good if I dial my eq to the point where the other pick-ups sound horrible.
I’m about to try out a Seymour Duncan lil 59 or similar in the bridge for that same reason. I just don’t use it.
And I thought I had seen the weirdest guitars, until today.
Ha ha!
The most uncanny guitar I've seen was Joe Bonamassa's Les Paul that has only a bridge pickup, only two knobs, and a Firebird-style headstock. That carved expanse between pickup and neck cannot be looked away from.
I love my tele for the simplicity of the two pick ups. I always play it on the middle as it’s a hot rod so the neck pick up is a mini humbucker, the warmth and brightness using the single coil bridge combined with it is incredible
Awesome~
Yep - that middle setting was the one used for most of the recording Steve Cropper played on - so if he does it - well.......?
I'm more impressed by your right hand strumming funk technique. Awesome stuff! :)

Wow I love that middle pickup strat. Might be the best I have heard. I could never find a strat that I liked wish I could get my hands on one of those.
Since I installed Eric Johnson pickups in my '86 Japanese Squire, I'm attracted to the middle pickup. Saw somewhere that having one pickup increases the attack and lengthens sustain, makes sense with less magnets pulling on the strings, invisible mutes. If you can have a Sustainiac influence the string to keep vibrating with varying magnets, a static magnet will influence the string into one position.
Less interference in the tone pickup's magnetic field + less wiring = more tone and richer dynamics!!
woh! new guitar tone. amazing!!

Middle one is my favorite one. Always been and perhaps always will.
Yes! Thank you!
When I used to play my strat in a rock situation I used the middle pickup pretty often. Solid and bright, less harsh than the bridge.
Awesome!
After all of these years! There are still things you can find in the strats that blows your mind!
Yes! Thank you!

Nice Chic/Nile Rodgers' playing. I agree. I love middle pickups. Some old Gibsons had a single P90 in the middle and that pickup covers all the tones needed in my opinion.

Great video on minimalism! This reminds me a lot of the original Fender Esquire, where it's 1 bridge pickup only in a Telecaster style body and has a 3-way pickup selector switch which goes from [Tone Knob Disengaged] - [Tone Knob Engaged] - [Tone Knob + Capacitor engaged for warmer tone]. Killer sounding guitar.
