Hey friends! Today we're welcoming back a fam fave series-- Character Tutorials! If you're new here or haven't seen the other ones I've done, I basically create a makeup tutorial for a character from a musical whilst discussing said musical. I'll leave a link below!

Today, we'll be discussing Seussical the Musical and messing around with makeup to look like everyone's favorite sexy bird, Mayzie LaBird!
Like I mention in the video, this video is slightly more adult-- but so is this show deep down. If you're not about that, I totally get it. I don't think there's anything inappropriate discussed, but I wanted to give you guys a heads up Additionally, there will be some spoilers because we're analyzing the show and talking about it in depth. Not trying to purposefully spoil anything, but it just kinda comes with the territory whenever you're trying to analyze something.

Aaaah, Mayzie. I really wanted to be Mayzie and my mum recorded me singing "Amazing Mayzie" onto her phone and had it as her ringtone for a while! Our production was fairly low budget so the elephant bird was a Heffalump with a set of kid's fairy wings on it's back (I was the Bird Girl that, in this particular production, got to act as midwife!)

I just did Seussical at my school (we closed Sunday). When we made our backstories we were very elaborate and very depressing. The cat became the cat through nuclear radiation. The who's all wanted to die and the mayor was having an affair with the general and the Grinch. JoJo was a drag queen. The Mayor also was the father of all who's. My character ( a who) had one child who died in the battle of butter and so did my husband. I married a woman who was the McElligots daughter and adopted two children. I had a sister who was the mayor's wife and our mother died slipping my character into a depression. As your points about Mazie I completely agree.

NO!" and then, "WWE S M A C K D O WN")

I've never listened to this show but I know a LOT of companies do it for amateur productions, but one day I decided to google the show and turned out it flopped on Broadway! I honestly wouldn't have guessed based on how many people do this show!
by the way, dr seuss himself was pro-choice, and he (& after his death, his wife continued to) actually sued people for using his copyrighted slogan (“a persons a person, no matter how small”).
Dr. Seuss was actually pro choice! Fun fact. The person’s a person no matter how small thing was more about not discriminating against people who are already alive

I did Seussical as a kid!! I was a thing and just a whole bunch of random kid characters (who soldiers and what not). It was so much fun and definitely a musical I would go and see just to reminisce 💕

Being on crew for my community theater's production was the most amazing experience of my life. I made so many friends, and although it didn't necessarily fix my insecurities about people hating me, it made me believe that i could be appreciated

Seussical was my senior year musical and even though I was a crew head I got my own Thing 1 costume for our set changes as opposed to all black. I was skeptical about it since it was my senior year after all, but the more we designed and built everything it became so much fun. The music was simple but our cast made it sound incredible. Biggest Blame Fool was by far my favorite but It's Possible is definitely up there. The set pieces and costumes were creative and it was so memorable. Also, dancing in the finale with the cast made it great. Seussical definitely was unexpectedly memorable.
I just played Mayzie in my schools production in November! I was even nominated for a statewide award for theatre performance (unfortunately didn’t win but am still lucky to have been nominated)! She was so much fun to play and give more depth to!
I was crying myself to sleep because AP Human Geography’s final exam is tomorrow and it’s not Seussy. But that Katherine uploaded so I better wipe my tears

I’ve been in Seussical twice now, and it’s a really fun show to be a part of, because every time you see it or are in it, it’s a little bit different. There is so much imagination involved, which makes the show really fun!
I freaking love it. I was a bird girl in high school. Wonderful songs, ingenious plot. Complete magic. Full. Of feels. Alone in the Universe still makes me cry.
It’s WAYYYYYYY too long in my opinion and the junior version is way better than the full (which is shocking because jr. versions usually suck!) but other than that I love the show!

My deep emotional connection to Seussical stems not from the content of the show itself (although i do enjoy a number of the songs) but from my experience in a production of it my senior year of high school.
Quick background info: Joined school choir in 3rd grade (the year you could start) and stayed until 7th grade when I dropped out due to extreme allergies and the start of puberty which wrecked my voice entirely. Shortly after that, began the long process of realizing/accepting that I am gay. And dealing with depression from many different sources including my wanting to rejoin choir but being unable to at the time, and having a number of friends who were still involved with choir.
Cut to: My freshman year of high school, where I was able to join Drama Club which my sister (2 years older) was part of and had told me all about, including their yearly end-of-school trip to NYC to see a Broadway show. Fell in love with musical theater hard and was able to see a number of shows throughout high school. Sophomore year a new Music teacher was brought in and brought new life to the department and also co-supervised Drama Club. Then at the start of my senior year, the teacher introduced a new class to the curriculum; American Musical Theater; and I immediately signed up. Part of the class consisted of learning a "classic" Broadway song and singing it for the class, so the teacher re-introduced me to singing and had such an effect on me that for the second semester I was allowed to join choir and I also auditioned for Seussical and was given a minor role (Who/Cadet/Hunch) but I was just so happy to be part of it. Because of that teacher, my senior year was my most memorable year of school, and we're still friends now 8 years later.
Kat this was amazing! Seussical was the first musical that I ever saw, and not only have I known the whole show for a very long time, but Gertrude and the Bird Girls were my first imaginary friends. It's so interesting to me to hear your adult analysis of it, especially because so many of these themes are present in Seuss's work, not just invented for the show (which you may have been trying to say and I just didn't catch it). I love how you've taken a work that was kind of glossed over on Broadway and brought it to life in a new light for me! But there is a part of me that likes to keep thinking about it as a frivolous children's show ;) .
My best friend played Mayzie when she was younger and from what I hear from my friends, suessical seems like a very fun and excellent show to be in. Now Mayzie is a dream role of mine!
SEUSSICAL IS MY BABY!!! When I did SEUSSICAL in high school I did choreography (which basically turned into assistant directing), costumes, and played Gertrude. I loved creating such a huge portion of this imaginative show. So many classmates said it was their favorite show they had seen from us. It. Was. My. Baby!

So....this is fantastic. Ps have I mentioned how much I LOVEEE this series?? It totally mashes together my theatre geekiness, my makeup geekiness, and my analytical geekiness!! You should totally do Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors or another Sondheim character! Maybe some ITW or Sunday in the Park? He always adds a ton of depth to his characters, and even some of himself to them too. I would love to see your take on them! Keep up the wonderful work Katherine!! 💖💖💖

I am doing suessical for my school musical and I play Mayzie labird and I told my makeup artist to use this on my face we just had our show last week and I thought I looked so cool with your tutorial! Thank you so much so helpful!!!
i thought this was such a childish show and when my school announced we were doing this show i was dreading it. fortunately, i stuck with it and i am so happy i did. i have never had a more fun costume, set, or makeup in my life. this show gave me the confidence to reach for what i want and my favorite quote is officially “oh the thinks you can think, think and wonder and dream far and wide as you dare. when your thinks have run dry, in a blink of an eye, there’s another think there”

i was recently in a production of suess and wowie wow was it fun. it is hands down one of my fave shows. i would do it again in a heartbeat. it is SO HARD though. it has such complicated harmonies and ACTING ACTING ACTING. because of the lack of talking in the show the singing and dancing must be spot on. i think that this show is WAY underrated and needs to be done like 1000000000 times more. anyway love you kath and im so glad you made this!! ❤️
I am a middle school "makeup manager" (it's like a stage manager but for makeup) and aspiring theatrical makeup artist so thank you so much for bringing this series back with one of my favorite characters.

My junior year of high school we did suessical and I was in love with it. All the commentary was amazing and the songs were just so catchy. Being a chorus member had me in so many different scenes and I still can't get over how much fun we had.
Seussical is one of my all time favorite shows, both Gertrude and Mayzie are some of my dream roles! I’ve done makeup on two productions of it now, and they’ve both been so fun.
I love seussical! I was in a production of it in February. I love the life lessons and morals that every character in the play show loud and proud!
My school did Seussical in March and at first we were confused and not excited because we thought it was going to be a kids show and no one would watch it. I was also casted at the Sour Kangaroo and I was so intimidated at first because this was the biggest role I have ever gotten at any of my school's productions. But as we rehearsed, we discovered how difficult this musical can be and how much every character really matters in the show. Turns out almost everyone who went to watch it fell in love with the show and even my mom and sister (who usually get bored in the middle) watched it three times without getting bored.
hey i was mayzie in my production of seussical! one of my fav roles i have played. i didn’t expect to like seussical at all bc it seemed lame, but i fell completely in love with the show. it was such a fun, ditzy sho that you had fun doing. i think seussical might be my favorite show ive done. i grew into my confidence and *pun intended* came out of my shell while doing this show.
I LOVE SEUSSICAL! I did the school version about ten years ago, and the soundtrack is still played on about 80% of roadtrips.

I was in Seussical in my high school senior year and I played The Sour Kangaroo. I had a very cute hand puppet that held the mic as my Young Kangaroo. My best friend was Gertrude McFuzz and my ex was The Cat in the Hat. I hear the actual show didn’t really get great reviews, but having been in a version of it for my senior year, I’ll always treasure that time of my life because it was so bittersweet. To think I started my freshman year being some extra in Footloose, to being one of the leads in my senior year is pretty awesome and I’ll always cherish it.
And you’re so right, there are some heavy themes in this show and I never really took the time to focus on what some of the messages were having helped the stagehands and set crew make our set, painting the stage floor red and white striped (we really did that! 😅 it was a labor of love), we had the biggest set in all my 4 years of high school. But yeah, some heavy themes in this show.
You mentioned being in the show as well, were you anyone specific if I may ask? Sorry for the novel! Wonderful work once again, absolutely fantastic.
Edit: I just realized how old this makes me feel because I’m 31 now. That seemed like a lifetime ago lol

Seussical is an amazing musical, I’ve enjoyed being in it for two theatre companies being cast as the same role both times; the Grinch.
It is full of never ending suspense and has a great storyline and great story-focused characters that if a school or regional theatre company plans to put it on, I recommend them to.
I love specifically that the Cat is a role where you can include improv in most scenes especially in my most recent production where our Cat broke the fourth wall calling the stage manager out on stage to give him his lines after the traumatic event with The Butter Battle.
Literally NO ONE cares to talk about how good Seussical is!!!
My school is doing Seussical, and I auditioned for the part of Mayzie. We find out the results this afternoon, so fingers crossed that I get the role! 🤞🏽

Finally, I think you should do a suggestion video where you suggest the best Jr. Musicals. Like reviewing how close it is to the original musical, the music, and how much the removing of songs and other things effect the plot.
YAAAAAS. IT'S BACK. This is my favorite series (other than bedtime stories, of course). To answer your question, I love seussical. I played Gertrude a few years ago and I would do anything to play her again. I'm basically her human embodiment. Seussical is one of those shows that always puts me in a wonderful mood. And I definitely don't cry every time I hear Alone in the Universe.....
I'm currently in my second production of Seussical the musial (Jr.), and I cannot stress enough HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS SHOW-
I did Suessical when I was 14 and played Horton so the show will always have a special place in my heart. I think a lot of people misjudge it as being purely a children’s show but like you said there are a lot of adult themes running underneath which makes it such an interesting show to both be in and watch as an audience member
I honestly didn't love Seussical at first but then I found out we would be doing it at my school my senior year and I listened to it again and now I love it. I got to play the Cat in the Hat and I just loved it so much. I had so much freedom to play and be fun and I was living. Loved this💓

This is so not what I was expecting this week's video to be, but it was great! I was getting ready to write a comment about how I like Seussical because it's just sweet, childish, imaginative fun, but then I heard your commentary on the underlying themes of the show, and I honestly never thought about it that seriously lol

This past fall I was the costume designer for my college's production of Seussical! For the first week of school each year we do a one-week musical (literally a week.. auditions were September 3rd, opening night was September 11th.)! It's soooo much fun

Seussical the musical was the first musical i was ever in! it has such a special place in my heart. Since it was done at my school we has tone down Mayzie. I never realized how adult the topics were until you mentioned it lol. I like the points you made. Also i LOVE the makeup look!

I just did a production recently, and oh my god I love it. It came at a time where I was struggling due to the death of my dog who's been with me for 11 to 12 years. I met great people and it made an impact. I almost cried during Solla Sollew because it just hit me so hard, and it still does. Love it.

My school did seussical last year, before I moved in to the district. I always hear people talking about it and making references to it but I never understand what’s going on, so this helped lol! Love the commentary
I played the sour kangaroo two years ago and I’ve loved that part so much because it REALLY expanded my range since then, that’s when I really realized that I can belt.
I was in a production of Seussical a while back when I was younger and when I look back on it now I think about how metaphorical it is and how many parallels it has to real life despite being a silly colorful show.

Suessical was one of the first musicals I saw that blew my mind. I was like 7 at a community theater for high schoolers and it was amazing. It might’ve been the first theater soundtrack I got my hands on and I loved it, especially Mayzie’s song! But now that I’m older I realize how young the target demographic was meant to be. Oh well, that happens! It’s got some good jams on it.

Had the chance to do the St. Louis premiere and High School Premiere of Seussical back in 2004, and it has become one of my all-time favorites. Wonderful analysis, and I wholeheartedly agree with your statements.
In 5th grade,I was in my school's production of Suessical, and it was my first ever show. I absolutely love it the show, although it was quite a bit cringy looking back. I was a Who, and had a "solo" and was so excited. My "solo" was only a single line, which was "picture the tinniest houses and grocery stores"
