    One interesting thing about Tyler is, watching it over again, it's clear from the beginning he's alienated and isolated. His bullying is lashing out for attention and anxiety about not fitting in.
    He's from a wealthy family, biracial, and, well, a teen. At his birthday party he was scared to get up and dance until Meilin grabbed him and took him to the floor.
    It's overshadowed by a lot of the rest of the movie, but it really comes together by the end.

      Tyler might also be a victim of toxic masculinity. From his excessive bullying to him hiding his love for something “girly” (4Town)

      You're totally right Will, agree with you! Love to see how they really showed his true colors by the end of the movie, makes it so much more grounded to reality. Makes me think about those I knew back in high school that may have wen through very similar problems and well, bullying can be a defense mechanism that needs gentle aid. Love to see how he was included in the group at the end. Rewatching this movie makes a ton of details shine even more!

      This is a great point. On that note, the shot during the dodgeball game where he's with another boy really underlines that for me -- Tyler is very exaggeratedly mocking Mei, and he's nudging the other boy, and the other boy is sort of awkwardly smiling/chuckling, but he's not participating or supporting it. It feels like Tyler is doing it to impress other kids, to boost his own social status by undermining the weird dorky girl.
      We never see him with friends, even at his birthday party. He blackmailed Mei to show up as the panda because he knew that "everyone would come" if she was there -- because he didn't think he'd get many, if any, kids showing up otherwise. He didn't know what to do to entertain his guests or get the party started, and at the end of the party when Mei is flipping out, her rejection belittles him in front of everybody, so he resorts to insults and bullying again.
      Obviously he was being a jerk. But it was nuanced being a jerk, and it's nice that at the end he joins Mei's gang because he finally found people who shared one of his (secret, guilty) passions (more reasons for him to be awkward privately and compensate aggressively) and who he could be himself with.

    • @m.b.6402
      @m.b.6402 2 года назад +9

      @@kiml.1565 (Nod) And think about the entire set-up of the party. He (correctly) concludes he needs a "draw" to have a good party. The panda's exciting, and kids will come for her...but if it's just him he can't count on people coming to his party. And it seems to be true: when they think the panda's not going to come, they start bugging out on him. As near as you can tell, no one was there for him.
      He's trying to find a place, and a role, and earn respect and friendship, and he's got Mei to contend with: brilliant, where Tyler doesn't appear to be, or know how to be, popular, with intensely healthy, strong friendships. And, yes--he probably has some fears about his role as a boy, if only BECAUSE he is a 4-Townie. So he's puttin' on the swagger and the bullying out of a pretty common mix of envy, competition, resentment, and fear-fueled anger.

    Great video! I really enjoyed how you picked up quickly that the panda didn’t just represent Mei going through puberty or her period, but her cultural heritage and identity. When Ming was explaining the history of Sun Yee, you picked up that when the family moved to a “new world,” elements of her Chinese heritage now became an “inconvenience” as Ming put it. But Mei, by spending time with that aspect of her upbringing, learned to embrace it, and couldn’t abandon that part of her when it came to the ritual.
    And that you picked up that the size of Ming’s panda was likely related to the pressure put on her to conform to her mom’s expectations, and became severely repressed. While it’s not explicitly explained in the movie, I wonder if part of Grandma’s expectations was that since they were in a new world, they needed to abandon that side of themselves to fit in properly. (I’m Latina, and I’ve seen some of my family do this to be more “American,” so I’m only speculating.) All the aunties had sealed away their pandas as well, and Ming likely came to seal it away because she didn’t have that supportive environment to embrace it, and underwent the ritual to fulfill both the expectation, and what she perceived as being for her own good after hurting her mom

      Reminds me of my dad. He's also Latino but his family never taught him Spanish. Even though they immigrated from Mexico. Nor would he take any Spanish classes. Recently asked my dad about this, his response: “I dunno, maybe they thought it would put me at some disadvantage”. Guess I was the Meilin in that situation, as I'm the only one in my household who chose Spanish lessons.

      Hey, thank you so much, really glad you enjoyed! Yess, love how, within the movie's subtext, it's also a commentary about a person kind of forced to diminish a part of her culture and actually learn that her ancestors and present are a vital part of her identity, and I love how actually proud the ancestor by the end of the movie seemed proud of Mei Mei's decision of keeping the panda. And it's amazing how that "inconvenience" is actually that repressed and misunderstood spark that a lot of us carry and might only discover years later.
      Yes, as a Latino myself as well can totally see that too, I think the grandma may have created that pressure on her daughter, since it's an entirely new culture and therefore different life beliefs. And love that last remark of yours, I grew, that lack of supportive environment was likely a big trigger for all this emotional mess the mother truly was after all these years. Once again, thank you so much, love this comment!

    I was enjoying the reaction while you were laughing and enjoying everything, then suddenly you got serious! That was the fastest emotion shift I've seen you! Ahahahha I did enjoyed this movie, but as an asian person grew up in an asian family, this hits so much closer to home and I'm so scared to watch this with my parents. Hahaha. I have been a MeiMei when I was a teenager... Over achiever, trying to make my parents proud... Up to my choice of course in college I let my parents choose for me. But after I graduated that is when I've chosen a path for myself. This movie symbolizes my repressed emotions towards my parents so I cant say that this is my most favorite Pixar movie... It somehow scratches an old wound....

I really relate to Mei and the mother as well in terms of that sickening habit of trying to be perfect, I totally feel you. This film also brought back some wounds for me and I appreciate it so much more for that since the film was so honest about this complicated stage in our lives. However, I totally get how this movie can be too much for someone, truly. I hope you'll continue to choose for your own and be more and more successful. Much love Louie! And thank you so much once again as always, legend! 🙌🏻♥️

    This movie hit home so many levels for me. Having grown up in an Asian family (although I'm a man), there were so many apparent and hidden expectations to honor the family and excel in everything I did. It was a reasonably loving home and I was tremendously privileged, but the pressure was intense. Although I was never a 13 year old girl, her journey in this movie is totally relatable to me. I honestly don't understand the criticism about sexual references, panda twerking (super cute by the way) and Mei lying to her mother, especially from conservative religious parents who did not watch the movie or failed to understand the true messages. Every girl goes through the same stuff Mei does (minus the panda of course) and to deny any piece of medium that demonstrates these facts of life is just plain silly and ignorant. I think all thoughtful parents should watch this movie with their kids. If they're so worried, this is why the movie is PG and not G - they're supposed to be there to answer questions. A lot of the jokes and metaphors will fly right over young children's heads. The teens are going to relate to those so much and it will be important for parent to watch the movie with them observe how they respond to events in the movie. Honestly, the sex-obsessed conservatives who think every contemporary medium is made to corrupt children with sex really needs to calm down and think about it. Not everything is about sex and the more they mention it the more they sound like perverts themselves! At any rate, although I was already in my 20s in 2002, all the cultural references were still exceedingly relatable to me.

    • @darquidarqui
      @darquidarqui  2 года назад +4

      This movie works so well cuz its themes and character journeys speak to an universal audience, it's really well done. I don't get how there are people who wouldn't relate to this movie even on an emotional level, we've all went through this teenager process or will happen sooner or later. I think that criticism towards the sexual references say a lot more about the people criticizing than the movie itself, which worries me. I agree, I love how this film is not worried to address these topics that shouldn't be taboo anymore. I agree, mostly parents should watch this and with an open mind if necessary. So much was relatable in this beautiful movie, honestly love it more and more as I think about it! Thank you 🙌🏻

    Just a thought. Jin (Meilin's dad) didn't tell her to embrace that part of her. _Ming_ (Meilin's mom) was trying to _control_ Meilin into _giving up_ the panda, but what _Jin_ did was _much better_ than _telling_ her what to do. He _gave her the choice._ Where Ming wanted things to be a certain way, Jin was _granting agency_ to his daughter... _so_ much better. "Erase this if you want, but this side of you made me laugh." Not 'do this', but rather 'you can _choose_ who you want to be'. His advice about people having different sides to them applies _even if_ Meilin decided to remove the panda.

    Seeing a lot of grown ass men say they couldnt connect with this movie is weird. Theres like one scene where its about periods. The rest.. idk man. Im 32. I hit puberty early at like 10/11. Its when i started growing hair in weird places. And put me in a weird place where my hormones were hitting early and my behavior just didnt match everyone elses. Dude puberty isnt nothing to scoff at. I remember feeling like my body was just out of control and just oogling like a goon. Especially being raised by old school catholic grandparents that werent the worst with my puberty but also not the best. Its a whole lot. I remember it being a nuts part of my life.

Heck, we related to a trash compactor that had binoculars for eyes living in a dystopic wasteland.

    I agree that this is a great move, partly because the antagonist isn't evil, but wants what's best for the main character--a very real, and interesting family dynamic. And that Tyler the bully ends up being shown as a troubled character who has a minor redemption arc. Although I like all of the characters in the friend group--Abby is particularly fun, and Priya often has the best background lines (are you a werewolf?)--I appreciate that Miriam is the quiet leader of the group, and the one who is Meilin's best friend. A very cool movie. And a cool reaction to it, too--well done.

    Gahd I love this movie so much. I was never an over achiever but I’m an Chinese immigrants’ child and had a lot of pressure and suppressed emotions, I was an emotionless kid, didn’t have a personality, not allowed to hang out with friends and feared my parents. Then I hit the end of high school when my mental health dropped even lower and it couldn’t mask it anymore and my parents found out I wasn’t ok, they couldn’t accept that I was mentally ill and that’s when my rebellion started. My friends and sister were the only things keeping me sane. I stopped feeling guilt that mei mei also mainly felt and I began being more expressive and learnt to direct my anger at them. I began to silently talk back, it was so freeing….
    I might never get to the point mei mei gets with the relationship with her parents but even they weren’t perfect by the end of the movie. This stuff takes time

    17:42 -if Mei-Mei had truthfully told her mom how much she likes the band, I think she would be allowed to go (with a chaperone). But without this vital information, the mom has no good reason to spend $200 for her 13 year old to go to a concert to band she never listed to (as far as mom knows).

    By the way, have you watched The Prince of Egypt (DreamWorks)? This movie is one of my favourites. It's based on Moses's story, but both religious and non religious people can enjoy it. A VERY UNDERRATED MASTERPIECE, with amazing animation, interesting story, very interesting characters (it focuses on the evolution of the relationship between brothers mainly, it shows the reasons of the antagonists, a realistic reaction when you discover something that changes your life, and what true sacrifice is), STUNNING OST AND SONGS (Hans Zimmer and Stephen Swartz)... Very beautiful yet soo sad.

    Great reaction and analysis. I loved seeing how well-connected to the emotions of all the characters. The first time I watched this movie, I found it visually loud and a bit jarring, but once I got used to the style, I loved it. I grew up in Toronto (long before Mei), and my one major beef is that no streetcar is going to wait for a girl to do her musical number with her friends. I speak from experience, when my bestie and I used to do song and dance routines at subway and streetcar stops.

    I seriously think that's kind of continuation of Inside Out. Look, Inside Out ended when Rally was 12 years old and an extended control panel with a RED 'puberty' light is installed. In Turning Red, Mei is 13 and this light actually TURNS RED. Of course, there are also externalized emotions. People wondered how Inside out would have looked with those themes and now it turns out that is controvercial, but NO it's natural. What can Pixar discuss topics about trauma, death, killing, guns, betreyals, fraud, and not about puberty? Kids should know earier than it happens. I have to admit that trailers of turning red seemed to me not encouraging, but I watched movie and I love it. Pixar instead of focusing on deep metaphysical themes, this time it focused on a down-to-earth, inevitable topic.
    The time of the action is also not accidental, 2002 was the year in which the current 33-year-olds were 13 years old and matured in those realities, and now they probably have their own 13-year-old children. This was to remind you of the times when they were teenagers and surely these awkward things happened to them and to understand the individuality of their child.
    In 2002 I was 2 years old so I cannot fully identify with those realities xD, but I am in between these 2 decades and I have not "forgotten" yet what it is like to be at this age and this film is so accurate.
    I also love cultural references and generation trauma

    • @darquidarqui
      @darquidarqui  2 года назад +1

      Hey didn't think about it that way! It's a great way to continue some of the themes of Inside Out, now taken to a more mature level and considering generational trauma and all.
      I was born in 97 and I still found a ton of things amazingly relatable. Speaks volumes about the quality of the film and its details!

    • @Anik-ge9vg
      @Anik-ge9vg 2 года назад

      @@darquidarqui Yes, Pixar doesn't let down, developed great those more mature topics, showed problems and realities of that age. I really had a lot of thoughts after watching it. An animation, music, dialogues are perfectly done and natural. And btw great movie relation.
      In context of 2000s it is so relatable: music, CDs, "Jokia" xD, teen magazines, boy bands xD I remember it from child pespective not pre-teenager like character (since about 2006 the most xD), nostalgia, the funny thing was when I was wrongly singing lyrics because I haven't learned English yet an now when I know what they means I have 🤦🏼‍♀ Those songs are iconic. And this movie is one of the best of Pixar
