Beautiful Burt Bacharach - thanks for the joy of your music! I saw this movie when I was 7 years old and never forgot it, especially this song. So wonderful to see him rehearsing with the children. What incredible joy he brought to his work - no wonder all his songs continue to make people happy decades on. RIP BB
I loved loved loved loved watching him conduct. So passionate. So generous. I’m grateful to my parents for having his music on constantly when I was a child. I was 13 when LH was out. I loved it then and love it now. The critics never swayed me. I know it’s not perfect. I love it for what it is. And isn’t.
The choir girl in 2:03 is Susan Cowsill of the Cowsills, the American singing group from Newport, Rhode Island, six siblings noted for performing professionally and singing harmonies at an early age, later with their mother.
From the moment I watched 'Lost Horizon' with the children singing this beautiful song I knew I would always love it and go back to the movie throughout my adult life too.
My name is Diana Lee and I’m retired from a busy and blessed studio singing career, a highlight of which was singing this wonderful song for the actress Liv Ullman, along with her other songs in the film. Burt and Hal were treasures to work with and fully supported me, same with Ms. Ullmann. Great memories, from 1972.
The dubbing for both Ullmann and Finch is spot on and beautiful. Lost Horizon came out at a time when "old Hollywood" was being rejected by critics for the new edgy era of filmmaking that EASY RIDER ushered in. Non the less, it's a lavish film, handsomely crafted with a wonderful score. The music is what I like best about LH. The film has legs.
@@cscarson8798 Thanks! It was a wonderful experience. And for the record….Finch was dubbed by my ex husband, Jerry Whitman and I agree, he did an awesome job, approached it the way an actor-singer would, so it was very believable. I loved the duet, I Might Frighten Her Away and how it was filmed.
Truly Blessed you are! We are all blessed to walk the planet during Burt's tenure. Thanks for sharing your voice for everyone to enjoy. Such an uplifting song and movie. One can only feel good listening to this and watching the movie. Something that WOEFULLY missing today.
Many of his songs were very complicated. My favorite Anyone Who Had A Heart is a very difficult song to sing- even Kelly Clarkson turned it down when she was competing on Idol.
I’m doing the same on piano, and you’re absolutely right. If you haven’t done so, check out his title track for after the fox. On the surface, it seems like a silly, frothy cartoon song. But there are equally amazing chord changes, with an unusual modulation from the verse to the chorus. and Bacharach’s genius makes it work perfectly.
@@cameronladd1788 Hi, Cameron. I have been listening to 'After The Fox. I am 65 years old and had never heard of it or the theme tune! What a fascinating and quirky piece of music! Like all Burt Bacharach songs, it is full of weird chromatics (Eb - Cb - Gm - Fm - G7) tough skips (perfect 4th from "No-Bod-y Knows). No one ever claimed Burt wrote easy songs for singers, but they were great to listen to,
@@cscarson8798 He even talks about that in his videos. He points out how he made Dionne Warwick jump an octave and a 4th in one of his songs. He writes (wrote) music the way piano players write music, not the way singers write music. With all of that being said, I LOVE his music.

Yea, Americans were to enamored with garbage like The Exorcist, The Day of the Jackal, Badlands, Serpico and Magnum Force. Lost Horizon was too uplifting for us.
This clip actually appeared on a tv special in the early seventies. I saw it then as a child and wished I could've been one of the children that got to be there. As usual with folks in my age bracket, our thing to say now is "I remember it like yesterday". I really do, though.
There was a TV Show, that I watched in my childhood that was "Bacharach form Shangri-La" or something like that. I would love to see it again. Anyone knows about that show? I remember the fifth dimension was on it, and Bobby Van.

This song can’t simply be categorized as “children’s music,” though it does fit that bill. The magical chromatic melody, those varying-length melodic lines over sophisticated chord progressions, it's all triumphantly BACHARACH. And kudos to Hal David for his lyrics about circles, reverse impressions,, yin/yang, and so on. And what an unexpected treat to see that Bacharach is being interviewed by Rex Harrison! Now I’m hearing “why can’t English teach their children how to speak…”
Wait! Burt! Burt!!! How did these African American folks get into shangri-la?? Are they the cleanup crew? There were none living there from what I could see.
This was the project that killed the Bacharach/David partnership - and it wasn’t even that good. But cracks in the seemingly impenetrable foundation had been been forming for years, dating back to “Promises, Promises “. It was such a loss.
