This is an excellent and detailed tutorial. Those changing the oil must understand your car either needs to be on solid ramps with the emergency brake on or on jack stands as you will still be lying under the car to get at the drain bolt and filter. Safety first!!! One minor detail: the Honda Filter states tighten 3/4 turn after gasket contacts base. You stated 1/4 turn. I know not to overtighten the filter but in 40 plus years of owning Hondas I have always tightened the filter 3/4 turn after gasket contacts base. I am a purist: after the old oil drains out I add one full quart of oil to the oil filler hole (with the drain bolt off) and let is "chase" the dirty oil and sediment from the bottom of the oil pan. Dealer never bothers with letting it all drain out. Forty years of owning Hondas and never had an oil burner, I am a 4000 miles or 6 months person.
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video and comment!
Nothing purist about sticking to oil change rituals from the 1970s. As long as it's not a turbo there's absolutely no need to change every 4k or 6 months since modern synthetics have shelf life of 5 years. As long as you're using a decent filter the oil can last 15-20k before it begins to break down but you should change between 7.5-12k depending on your driving habits to avoid deposits
My dad never taught me how to do a oil change Your my new dad thanks 🤙
No 💩 he left the day he seen u
I see! The 1.5t, which I have does not need removal of the larger panel, just the small plate. Thanks for this vid bud, hope you're enjoying your Accord, I know I am.
Thanks for taking time to watch the video and comment! I really am enjoying the car and am glad you are too. I have had several cars over the years and I can honestly say this has been the best car I have owned. If something happened to this one, I would buy the same one again without question.
@@ThatDadMike Lol! That's funny you say that, I am the same way. I literally have bought the same type of shoes for like 6 years now, lol! I soo wish I would have gotten the 2.0t though, I've heard it's ballsy for a 4 banger.
Just picked up a 2021 2.0. Thanks for this video!
Awesome, welcome to the family! The car has been fantastic and is a lot of fun to drive. I hope you like yours as much as I like mine!
Excellent step by step video instructions with superior HD quality!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Note: You can leave the driver's side bolt in the rear of the cover underneath and take out the rest of the fasteners and just slide it to the side to get access to the drain plug and you can still drain the oil without getting it on anything. Makes things a little easier.
It’s recommended that you fill the oil filter with oil before placing onto the car. This keeps the engine from having a dry start. Good video, very informative.
Awesome comment
this
4:33 after seeing how easily it spews onto the cat, I’m definitely putting a shield there when I do it
Just picked up a 2020 exl 2.0 should be the same with filter and oil
I believe that's correct. You will love the car!
To keep the oil being drained off of the the exhaust, I cut the ends off a water bottle and slit it down the side so I could use it to cover the pipe. When I took the drain plug out, sure enough, oil got on the bottle. Just remember to take it off after reinstalling and tightening the oil plug.
Nice tip, nothing like smelling burning oil after oil changes
Thank you! This will save me money from taking it into Honda stealerShip for $89.00!
Glad the video helped - that's exactly why I decided to change my oil as well!
Honda give you synthetic blend oil not even full synthetic.
Very comprehensive. Thanks
Thank you!
Just wondering because your engine isn't sitting flat are you sure there's not any oil still sitting in the engine?
There is probably a bit of undrainable oil left like with any engine but the orientation of the drain bolt allows for most all to drain out.
Awesome vid...I did have one question:I was told that you can add oil to the oil filter before putting it back on the car to prevent dry starts...is this true???
Thank you for taking the time to watch the video! You certainly can add oil directly to the oil filter before reinstalling.
@@ThatDadMike awesome no problem....cool sounds good 👌👍😀
Great video, so far I used Pennzoil ultra, idemitsu, and now using Amsoil signature series. Been using Honda filter just because I am under warranty. I put 10 miles on the Amsoil but seems a little smother, I love Pennzoil though, haven’t used Mobil one, probably next oil change.
My question is if I can only use 5qts rather then using 5.1 if it hurts my engine on not using the extra .1? The Amsoil is so expensive and don’t wanna buy the extra qt for 15 bucks if I don’t have too but if I have too I rather spend the 15 bucks rather then risking something. What do you think?
That's a good question. I would just check the dipstick and make sure it lands between the low and high marks. Worse case, you buy the 6th quart and just use a little each time you change the oil and get several oil changes topped off with that extra quart. In the two oil changes I have done, 5 quarts has worked perfect. I imagine it is because there was always a little left in the engine.
Mobile 1 (0W20) and WIX 57356XP oil filter. Do not Dad's recommended oil filter, same inside bits as the cheap brand oil filter.
Excellent video!
What does the B stands for?
Thank you! "B" means to change the oil filter and inspect brake pads, etc. The "A" means to just change the oil. I prefer to change the oil filter every time I change the oil, even if it says "A"
Where is the tire pressure button located at?
Excellent video tutorial Sir! Thank you!
Thank you!
Excellent video! Do you add 5 full quarts?
Thank you! Yes, I have changed it 3 times now and my 2.0 takes the full five quarts when I change the filter and let it all drain out. I check the dipstick each time just to be sure though.
Very detail instructions. Keep videos coming. Very helpful to us new owners.👍👍
Thank you so much! I am really enjoying this car - how do you like it?
It’s my daughter’s car. She really like it.
I’ve yet to find a good DYI about changing the transmission fluid on a 2.0. CVT I can find all day.
Very good instructions🙏
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment!
Sorry to sound like a complete noobie that i am (thinking of changing the oil for the first time in my life of my 2.0t 2022), but what is the purpose of the panels that need to be removed in order to access the oil plug and the oil filter? After I take them off, can i leave them off without any consequences down the road? Thanks
That's a great question! These are in place to protect the bottom of the engine and nearby components. They are easy to remove and put back in place. I would not recommend leaving them off.
@@ThatDadMike thank you for the quick reply
You bet, let me know how it goes! BTW, great choice, it's a great car!
Aren’t you supposed to add a little oil in the oil filter before adding the new one?
You certainly can add some oil into the oil filter but it's not required.
Good question
Is the filter the same for the 2022 Honda Accord sport 2.0 model ?
Thanks for the message! From everything I have read it does - Honda has been using this filter on a number of their cars for several years. I would double confirm with your dealer and/or by reading the number on the filter you are going to replace.
According to my research that is the wrong oil filter p/n for 2022 correct one is 15400-RTA-003
Great tutorial video 🤙🏽
Thank you!
any future 10Speed ATF videos? There's some on RUclips for CVT but none for the 10speed.
Thanks for asking! None on the radar yet but will definitely post a video when I do.
I have a question.. how long u drove the car to get to the first oil change! Bc I bought a 22 Honda 2.ot and I’m already at 20% oil life and I only drove 3900.
That's probably about right. I am changing mine at around 5,000 miles each time now.
@@ThatDadMike
I called the dealer after watching your videos and I explained. I got scared 😂😂.. they told me that you probably driving highway most of the time. Mind you that my car is new too. So Idk, at least I have a little of peace of mind.
Definitely worth the piece of mind calling the dealer! I think you made a great choice buying the Honda, it's a great car!
did u put the whole container in there?
Yes, my 2.0 took the entire 5 quart jug, however I did monitor it to make sure I did not overfill.
How's the car reliability? I'm really trying to jump into one but scare of the new engine turbo setup 😆
Great question! The car has been flawless and drives fantastic. I did a lot of research and read a number of posts on www.driveaccord.net and also leveraged the price paid discussion to make sure I was getting a good deal. The 2.0 has plenty of power and the 10 speed is matched very well to the engine. Gas mileage in mixed driving has been about 27mpg. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy the exact same car.
Only time will tell wait maybe 3 years see if they hold up after 100k miles
@@bigdavedayday1581 I've had my honda accord sport 2.0 for 3 years and it holds up very well...29k miles so far..I don't get up much due to financial constraints...other than a surprise brake job I needed it holds up very well..almost time for an oil change too....
After how many km we have to change it???
I usually follow the maintenance minder in the car as it will adjust to your driving style. If your engine uses synthetic oil, the maintenance minder may not illuminate until about 12,000 km or more
Could you share the ramp model you are using, I wasn’t able to find a low profile ramp work for this car, thanks!
Sure! I am using an older version of the Rhino Gear ramps. The clearance is very close but they work. Here is an Amazon link: amzn.to/35VIgPq
Did you pour all the oil in?
My engine is the 2.0T and the max capacity is 5 quarts. I started by pouring in 4 quarts and then drove it off the ramps and rechecked on level ground adding a half quart each time and rechecking since some could still be left in the system. Mine ended up taking all 5 quarts so it must have drained really well.
@@ThatDadMike I see so technically you can just pour in all of a 5qt jug right? I appreciate the response!
Happy to help! For the 2.0T you can, but I always start at 4 quarts and work my way to 5 quarts checking often so I don't overfill in case there is some left in the engine that did not drain. I would hate to have to pull the drain plug again if I go over 🙂
@@ThatDadMike that makes sense. Thank you so much!
Hello sir
I have Honda Accord 2019 regular sports
Where do I purchase the oil filter? And is it always 15400plm?
Hello! I recommend checking your owners manual to be sure on the oil filter size for your engine. USA based 1.5L and 2.0L turbo 10th generation Accords take the 15400plm filter. I purchased mine at the Honda dealer but they can also be found on Amazon.com. It's a great car, I hope you are liking yours as well!
@@ThatDadMike hey dude so I did change my oil and I believe I added too much oil, about 5quarts. And the oil is sitting on a high mark of the dipstick. Is that bad?
Hi Yusuf, if it is over the fill marks on your dipstick, I would take some out. Too much oil causes a lot of problems so it best to be safe. The manual lists the following oil capacities but when the oil is changed it is possible that not all of the oil drains out so you could actually use a bit less than these quantities:
1.5 liter engine - 3.7 US quarts
2.0 liter engine - 5.0 US quarts
The easiest way to take some out is to slightly unscrew the oil filter and let it drain a bit and then retighten the filter. Check the quantity on the dipstick and repeat if necessary. When you are all done, check again for leaks and make sure the filter is tight.
@@ThatDadMike awesome thank you
So far it hasn’t giving me any problems, I even driven it for couple hours. But I’ll definitely drain some out just to be safe.
Why wud they make the dip stick orange
That's a great question. I imagine it is so it stands out if someone has not seen one on that engine before but I am not sure.
Do you recommended mobile 1 for honda accord or...? i heard mobile 1 oil is little thicker so it's not good for the engine in the winter time,
Great question! I researched a lot before doing the first oil change and it came down to the viscosity index (VI). Mobil 1 had the higher VI by about 10 points when compared to my goto synthetic brand Castrol. From what I read, the lower the VI, the more the viscosity is affected by changes in temperature. The higher the VI, the more stable the viscosity remains over temperature fluctuations. Mobil 1 had the higher VI so that sold me on the Mobil 1.
Any name brand synthetic oil will do just fine, just make sure get the right viscosity, in this case its 0w-20. First number is 0 viscosity when oil is cold, then turns to 20 when oil gets to operating temperature.
Every how many miles do you do the oil change? I feel like my 2019 Honda accord is scamming me with how fast it needs a oil change lol
I took it to 5,000 miles and then changed it even though the maintenance minder was still showing 30%. I bet the maintenance minder would take you to about 7,500 miles before telling you to change the oil.
@@ThatDadMike Hahaha I wish, the maintenance minder tells me to change the oil it every 3k miles which is weird since I'm always doing full synthetic oil. That's why I think my honda is scamming me haha
@@Rico6491 i have 2020 EXL 2.0 i change oil every 5k mile but the minder tell me that my oil life level is still 60%
I change my 2018 camry's oil 0w-16 every 10k very efficient engine. Have the xse 4 cylinder. Lease is due and just went on a 2021 sport 2.0t test drive. I'm thinking if I should keep camry or get this accord in 2.0t which is quicker car but maintenance is about double of camry
@@ThatDadMike Honda recommends you wait until 5% on the first oil change. Something to do with the moly content being used from the factory.
You should link all the stuff
Done, thanks for the suggestion! I have just added the filter and crush washer to the list in the description.
I have the same car and I'm worried on doing an oil change, the dip stick is that orange one with 2 dots and it's always at the top dot even tho it's 30 percent, it's difficult for me to read 😂 I wish it was like my other vehicles where it's more easier to know where the oil is exactly
The orange stick definately makes it hard to read with new oil. When you say 30% is that the reading on your maintenance minder? If so, just reset it using the procedure at the end of the video and it will take you back to 100%
@@ThatDadMike Yeah I have a B1 code on my maintenance on my vehicle and I'm wondering if I can do the oil change myself but I read also that I'm due for a tire rotation also and supposedly they check your transmission fluid as well as the other fluids so I'm like ehhh
Hey when i put the new oil in the car do i put the whole 5 Quartz bottle? I have a 2.0T
My 2.0 took exactly 5 quarts but it depends on how well you drain out the old. I would put in most if it and then check the dipstick and add more if needed to make sure you don't overfill.
@@ThatDadMike is it 4.2 liter?
I think i saw it in the car manual 4.2
But maybe that was for the 1.5L engine
Thank you for the video🌹
Thanks for the comment! My car has the 2.0T engine that takes about 5 quarts of oil when you change the filter. I think what you may have seen is the oil quantity in liters with no change of the filter since Honda recommends changing the filter every other time. Personally, I am going to change the filter every time for piece of mind.
@@ThatDadMike my feeling on that is changing the oil filter at each oil change is just good policy. If you’re going to change to new clean, you might as well use a fresh filter too! 👍🏼
How much oil did you add?
It ended up being right at 5 quarts
is it necessary to use protective shields?
They are definitely necessary. The position of the transmission and the oil filter are pretty low and would make them susceptible to damage if you run over something without the shields.
its for fuel economy, also protects your underneath from rocks or anything that get kicks up so yes its important
Thanks for telling us how many quarts.
So just 5 quarts ? On Google it says 5.1 quarts but if 5 is good then ok
Yep, 5 quarts on my 2019 2.0t. Definitely check the dipstick when done but it is right in the middle each time I change it.
Thought you were only suppose to use Honda motor oil?
Great question. Honda states that you can use any oil as long as it meets or exceeds the specifications stated by Honda. When I researched a number of synthetic oils, this specific oil stood out for it's ability to perform well in higher temps so I personally felt it was a good match for the turbo engine.
No...
My Honda dealers uses Castrol GTX full synthetic.
I really wish Honda would use hydraulic hood struts instead of the prop rod. I have a 2021 Touring and for 38k hydraulics should be standard. They don't even put the earth dreams sticker on the engine cover any more!
Relevant comment to the video, nice.
Not sure why I’m watching this, I don’t even own a Honda 💀
Run a quart through
Ok man zero need for music. But thanks for the info
Honda
Man those rams are sketchy
The ramps have been great. We use them for our SUV as well
Sounds like a lot of work . It's cheaper to pay 49 bucks and avoid the inconveniences.
