    I have both figures and find that DS-01 is far easier to pose than MP-52. The weight distribution is more balanced on DS-01. MP-52 is very top heavy and the weak knee ratchets keep him from holding a lot of easy poses. In my case, I also had issues with some paint chipping on MP-52, especially the the diecast chest and pylons. The painted plastic parts are fine. For DS-01, I think the lighter grey combined with the wing articulation gives him more presence; he's just more fun to look at.

      This is why they include the stand for MP 52! Not only posing but other factors too. 😏

      The diecast being primarily in the upper torso and weak knees/ankles is what kept me away from the MP Starscream and go with the DS one. I'm want to pose my figures without fear of them collapsing from weak hardware. KFC Ditka is forever in A-stance due to the knees and humongous backpack. Agreed on the last point - the lighter paint scheme plus the wings and cleaner backpack is more preferable for my tastes.

      I just wish there were a few mpre accesories of the Takara version that DS01 had, like ironically a screaming face. A screaming/yelling face is as intergral to Star Scream as a character as the smug face is to me. That as well as a few other things like the effect parts and flight stand still make me debate on getting MP52, next to the easier and more enjoyable transformation.
      But besides that I couod honestly see picking up both of these figures for both of their positives, as crazy as thst is financially

    I like to transform my figures sometimes. I do not care for the blast effects or other accessories that much, although when it comes to flying alternative modes, I do like them to have a flight stand. However, most of all, I want a figure to look as cartoon accurate as possible in both modes and mainly for that reason I chose Crimson Wings. It just looks so much better.

    In regards to accuracy, DS gets the front shot the best, because of the thickness proportions of the thighs. The middle side view, Takara takes because of the curved cockpit shape. Proportions wise, DS nails it.

    I wish we could share pics, as I’d end the size debate immediately. The size of DS is more accurate, period, no debate, end of story. He’s no more than a half head shorter than Megatron and eye to eye with Soundwave.
    The size of shockwave is smaller than it should be. He’s the one who’s out of scale. Not the DS. Plus the coloring of MP-52 is just flat out off. He’s never looked they grey unless it was animation error or shadowing.

    • @wintdah7778
      @wintdah7778 3 года назад +1

      Dude, the colors and sizes are changing literally every 5 seconds in the cartoon. I was actually watching it yesterday, and there's just no point saying that one is bigger or smaller or darker or lighter than what it should be, because the cartoon was extremely inconsistent. Now something that DS does get right and TT doesn't is the shape of the back, but aside from that there isn't something consistent enough to give any of them the point.

    TakaraTomy should get to work on a Masterpiece G1 Starscream version 3.0 (aka version 4.0). MP-52 G1 Starscream ALMOST looks G1 cartoon model-accurate in both robot in jet modes. His shade of gray is too dark and it needs to be lighter. He looks G1 cartoon model accurate in robot mode in the front, but the back, not so much. I can say the same things about MP-52+ G1 Thundercracker and MP-52+ G1 Skywarp. And as for Deformation Space G1 Starscream, he ALMOST looks cartoon model-accurate in both jet and robot modes.

    I believe the red on DS StarScream is painted with a thin layer of matte; the plastic is also red, but its a transparent plastic, so without the paint, one could see light somewhat shine through it. Also, I think the reason the official's chest looks good is because it's a faux cockpit, while the DS version incorporates the altmode's actual cockpit. Still, that transparent red plastic on the DS version makes me ponder that figures longevity.

    I'm somewhat surprised by this outcome, lots of folks seem partial to Crimson Wings. The only edges I give it over MP-52 are the lighter gray, which looks much more faithful to the cartoon, and the seemingly better QC, at least in general.
    Waist articulation doesn't matter to me, especially if it's going to come at the expense of the sculpt. Neither does the presence of a faux cockpit on MP-52.
    MP-52 is a tad too short in my eyes but that's accurate to the scale chart...Starscream is supposed to be a hair shorter than Shockwave and significantly shorter than both Megatron and Soundwave.

    Great review. I decided to go with DS. Way cleaner look, better proportion and scale, better color, and the cost makes it an easy choice. I like the blast effects of TT but not worth it for the extra cost. Also, even though I don’t mind TT not having waist articulation, after watching other vids showing the false cockpit on his chest is kind of disappointing to me. Reminds me of MP-36 Megs chest not being the side of the gun like in the cartoon but worse.

    For me, the sculpt of MP-52 is just too rounded, it makes him look chubby and even though you can find that one scene on the one episode where he looks fat, I just don't feel like Starscream has a beer gut.
    I also hate MP-52's wings. The thick robot mode wings to hide the tail fins just bothers me every time I see it. And since the tail fins don't fold up or anything special it bothers me that they don't have the stripes.
    Crimson Wings just looks a lot cleaner to me in both modes. I kind of agrees on his height relative to other Takara MP figures but at the same time I think MP-52 is a little too short. He needed an extra half inch to scale properly and since that isn't an option all things considered Crimson Wings is my pick.

    I have both and it just comes down to preferences. DS Transformation is less fun and it has less accessories, but I feel everything else is so much better. No Butt flap, thinner backpack profile, thumb and waist have the important articulation MP-52 is missing, size and main color is more G1 accurate, doesn't use an unnecessary fake cockpit chest, can stand much better (at the minor cost of no forward/back ankle tilt), less tiny thin parts that feel easily breakable, cooler looking body proportions, and much better price.

    Just a note on the cartoon accuracy of the tail fin stripe in jet mode. You could kinda argue either way on that. A lot of the artwork outside of the show itself shows the red stripe on the tail, but in the actual cartoon, the stripe wasn't there (and this includes the 1986 movie). So it's kinda up for debate which is more accurate.

    Deformation seems more like an idealized stand alone art piece drawn by a professional artist on a canvas he took his time on, while MP52 pursues cartoon accuracy with wild, reckless abandon. That is to say, the original 80's cel animation was wonky and goofy and mass produced at a blistering pace with animation errors and goofy contours and mistakes. And MP52 embodies that energy. Yet that wonkiness is less of a weakness and more of a strength when it is technically truer to the source material. If that makes any sense.

    I think they are both gorgeous figures. I think the lighter color on the Deformation Space is better than on the MP-52, but I do feel they took it a bit TOO far, and it's a bit TOO light.
    The main thing that makes me prefer MP-52 is the fact that I actually enjoy the transformation. I only transform it back and forth maybe once or twice a year, but the way the wings fold into themselves and kind of absorb each other is just so cleverly done.
    I never, EVER want to transform the Deformation Space ever again though. So frustrating.

    DS all the way on this. Still a thumbs up review. I don't really care for Starscream so it isn't something I am going to buy anyway but I think the jet and bot mode look way better. I like that he is taller and his proportions look more accurate to me. I am also really a snob when it comes to articulation and I don't even think it is close. Not only does he have the waist rotation but Takara's can't really move his legs backward at all. On top of that the ab crunch is superior on DS as is the head rotation because you don't get that unsightly head gap when he is looking up. Also his double-jointed arm bend is all the way verses fifteen degrees shy of that. In addition the turning of the engine in the back for the ankle rotation is important to for stability and that doesn't work for Takara.
    I do love blast affects and the cool gimmick under Starscreams chest but I feel like you double counted some of the accessories a bit much in the gimmicks category. I think to clearly define this category gimmicks should be built in. For example the Studios Hotrod with his visor hidden in his head. Opening doors and trunk on a car like X-Transbots Skids would also count for that. Opening headlights and lights built in would definitely be great gimmicks too. I think it is a great category, but I think accessories should not bleed over into this category and be double counted.
    Overall great review. Thanks for the input.

    Crimson Wings has got a GREAT look, but good Lord I hated transforming it. I ended up selling him and getting the full set of three Takara Seekers, and I'm quite happy with them. They look great, pose good enough, and whenever I do end up transforming them I don't end up having a mental breakdown.

      @Hieu TV it’s by an eyelash but I like MP-52, ever so slightly better. There’s no shortage of things that DS does better, but I like the overall package and engineering of MP-52 better. Aesthetically you can’t go wrong with either, but there are a couple of things about DS I find very slightly less visually appealing, even taking into account the cleaner back on DS and the presence of a waist swivel.
      The matte paint is fine but not my preference. And I find that there is a very slight flat square look to DS compared to MP-52 that I like less. There is a depth to the shapes on MP-52’s torso that I like better. And MP-52 is a thousand times more fun to transform.
      I will point out that I don’t have any stability problems with MP-52 SS (or TC, for that matter either) so that’s a nonissue but YMMV.

    • @tfronczek
      @tfronczek 3 года назад

      @Hieu TV very much so. It’s not flimsy feeling in the slightest. However, DS is even more sturdy. It’s built like a brick shithouse and could probably double as a home security device. But I can shake the hell out of MP-52 and nothing moves around either.

    • @tfronczek

      @Hieu TV I don’t find it to be fun but in fairness I have not really done it so many times that I have perfected the order of operations. Which has very little to do with the instructions which are kind of crap.
      However, since you have mentioned your concern with your 10 year old being able to enjoy it, I feel like with DS, much like MP-9, if you learn to do all the steps just so in the proper order, it can be an enjoyable and worry free experience. For example, when my daughter was 10 I took the time to show her in painstaking detail how to transform MP-9 and she was able to do so perfectly every time with all four wheels touching the ground. She’s 20 now and, as you might expect, lost interest when she got to high school. On the other hand, when my son was 10 (he’s 13 now), half the time he couldn’t transform a Hasbro Deluxe without snapping off a tab or something. So what it really comes down to, is do you have the patience to learn to do everything on DS just so and do you have the ability to impart that knowledge to your son? And does he have the ability to learn it? If your son is more like my daughter and less like my son, I would go for DS. It’s damn near unbreakable.

    Well, I know that taste is not discussed and the two figures are wonderful. But I found the Starscream DS-01 better in several aspects and in terms of transformation I don't intend to keep transforming it several times. It will stay in my collection quietly to admire it. Well, that's my choice and this video helped me a lot to make that choice. Thank you very much.

    IMO the best comparison shot between the two is at 0:16. I prefer the sleeker looking Null Rays on the MP52, but not having the beer belly of sorts in the Crimson Wings as well as a far smaller backpack (if you can even claim he has one) pretty much shows you everything.
    As for toon accuracy... Ergh... The TT has the better red IMO, but the DS has a closer blue as well as the lower legs/feet and lower arms (TT's hands are quite a bit too small). TT nailed the Null Ray probably, and even the torso profile (which as stated I'm just not a fan of). The... whatever you want to call them behind his head are hysterically a draw as both seem to be too tall compared to the toon image.

    The main thing to point out is that, what with these and Maketoys, there's a Starscream for everyone. People have their own view as to what the character should look like, based largely on their own recollections, so it's nice that DS caters to those who want a lighter, taller, beefier figure. Like what you like, buy what you want etc.
    With that said, MP-52 is objectively more accurate to the character model (at least until you get to the rear view, but neither is completely accurate in that regard). Height, proportions, colour... all are a closer match to the original animation model (note, not how he may have been drawn/coloured in that one episode/scene). That's what Takara tends to reference these days and they've done a great job with this. The thighs are a touch too long because they love those heroic proportions, but everything else is a closer match.
    DS is a good looking Starscream, and I was going to get it, but then I saw the early pics and it's just way too tall for my toon collection. No disrespect to anyone who prefers him, but for once I'm actually glad I changed my mind and went official.

    MP-52 is leaps and bounds better, in my opinion. Actually, the KO 1:1 version of MP-52 is. It has very strong knee and ankle joints.
    The darker paint isn't as dark as it seems to be in pics and videos. In hand, it just looks great!
    Size is accurate. I don't know why people think he needs to be Megatron size.

    • @JaceyMitchell
      @JaceyMitchell 4 месяца назад

      Agreed on the size. He's smaller on the Sunbow size chart, and in most episodes they actually stay fairly consistent with him being a bit shorter than Megatron. So in terms of size he's pretty much perfect in my opinion. I think both versions are great figured but the only thing I prefer outright on the DS is the color. I do feel TT went a bit overboard with how dark they made the gray. Not that is really bothers me, and I actually think DS went a bit TOO light for me but that's nitpicking really.
      I will never, ever do that DS transformation again tho 🤣

However…I don’t own the tak, so I can’t say sh#t. I do however appreciate you taking the time to review both. There are so many similarities with MP-52 compared to the cartoon.

    One thing I feel DS isn't getting enough credit on in alt mode is the accuracy of his arms. If you look at the cartoon model of jet mode his arms are gone (you can see them disappearing when he transforms). Almost every G1 Starscream toy, besides the original G1 toy which partsformed the fists off, have had the blue forearms on the side of jet mode. Off the top of my head DS is the only one without the blue at all.
    A suggestion on the new Gimmick category. Obviously it is your channel so you make the final call, but I figured I'd give the feedback so you can decide if it has value or not. I understand what you intend, but I feel like you executed poorly on this video for the Gimmick category. I feel like you need to clearly differentiate the Accessories and Gimmicks. I can see that even without the Accessories Takara still wins the Gimmick category VERY easily, but watching the video it came off as Takara getting 2 points for having more Accessories to me.
