  • I wish I had known about this hack sooner!!
    I came across a video by Stitch Obsessed where she used Elmers school glue to baste a quilt and I just had to try it and I gotta say this is my new favourite method of basting.
    I absolutely love how easy this method is and no pinning!
    It made the quilting process so much faster because I didn’t need to stop to remove pins.
    I also used this quilt to try free motion quilting for the first time and that was a fail but I still enjoyed the process and will definitely practice more.

    Thank you so much for sharing with your subscribers, Sara! Your quilt turned out great, and your quilting looked great, especially for your first-time FMQ loops! Sometimes the best way to learn is to do! Awesome job!

    Wow Sara. Now I want to try this. And i want to FMQ something. I have done it before. I used one of my vintage sewing machines and it went well. Have to set it up again and not stress over it. Thanks for showing this method with the school glue.

      You’re welcome. I will be basting with glue from now on and even though my free motion quilting looks awful on this quilt I want to do more. It’s actually really relaxing. Have a wonderful week!

    I am currently trying this basting method on a quilt as you go quilt. I did as you demonstrated. My machine needle did not do well when I pierced a line of glue. So, I tried spreading the glue out with a foam brush after laying down the lines of glue. Those blocks have given me no problems at all when quilting.

    • @SarasQuiltingJourney
      @SarasQuiltingJourney  5 месяцев назад

      I am definitely going to have to get some foam brushes for when I use this method. Thanks for sharing that it makes it easier.

      I had the same experience. The glue can be a really thin application to work, so I squirt them brush out thin quickly.

    I used to do it this way. But turns out when the needle hits the glue, it slowly throws the timing if your machine off. Repair shops are expensive so I'll keep thread basting.

    I just did fmq for the first time. I also felt like i just wanted to throw the whole quilt away mid way through. Lol! I had a lot of trouble doing the fmq. Thread breaks, machine getting locked up. I messed up my fmq foot. Just an awful experience.

    Wow! You could throw that quilt top my way. It is cute!! I like the idea of glue basting but wonder about laundering. Does the glue wash out well and if so, what does the glue do to the washer? I want to be thorough before I try it because I have had problems with the spray basting. It ruined a quilt I was making for my great grand-daughter.

    • @SarasQuiltingJourney

    When I've used school glue then dried it with an iron, the glue gets hard. And then it's hard to quilt through the hard spots in the glue. I use 505 basting spray instead.

    • @SarasQuiltingJourney
      @SarasQuiltingJourney  8 месяцев назад

      Yes I did find the glue was a bit hard after I used the iron on it. Next time I will just let it dry on it’s own. One day I will have to try 505 basting spray. I hear it’s really good.
