    This is one of the most helpful videos for Elite Dangerous I've seen yet. I like that you actually explained why you set it up the way you did, what you tried that didn't work, etc.

    ***** I had a bit of a setback regarding the HOTAS (nothing wrong with the HOTAS but with the 3rd party software I was using) so I'm not sure yet.
    I think it might just be a review of the product which I'm hoping to do "soon". I'll think about a second bindings video though.

      +Brad Dollahite can't figure out how to request landing access in tutorial mode. I bound my keys the same as you, but I can't navigate the menu. Shift + right on the hat switch just pulls up chat. Shift and left pulls up the target panel, but I can only choose system or galaxy map. Wont let me communicate with the station. It just won't let me navigate the menus

      +AdoredTV thanks for this video, i had bought a hotas x and it is my first joystick ever. after searching through forums and other youtube videos this one was i think the best setup for my entry into controlling with a joystick. The only adjustment i made was making button 10 as my shift key that way i can press every other button in addition to 10

    Literally just picked up this HOTAS today. I tried playing last night on an old Logitech Attack 3 and it just wasn't having it. I'm glad a read the comments cause it sounds like this video is perfect even for playing today! Haven't even made it through the tutorial, but I'm gonna sit down and basically copy theses settings cause they seem logical to me. I know it'll take some getting used to, but I'm really excited to get going with this game!

Have just started ordering components for a pc build mainly for playing this game and this controller looks like it will be the icing on the cake. I was apprehensive as like yourself have been a mouse and keyboard player pretty much all my life but feel like this game deserves a little more immersion. Thank you for the upload.

    Just bought the same stick just yesterday after getting the game just yesterday and realizing the mouse and keyboard were, lets say a bit lacking. Always played with M&K since forever but I have to agree the joystick immersion is SO much better. $43 US Out of the door, not to bad. Your vid really helped me out with whats what in the setup, so now I have a starting point so thanks.

    I have my throttle set up like you in that I have full range in forward mode. But I also have a button (right next to the rocker that you are using for thrust) set up that when I push it, it will set my throttle to full reverse range. So one button selects FWD or REV, and I have full throttle range in both modes.
    Welcome to the world of HOTAS...

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  9 лет назад

      I'm thinking about using Button 8 (Shift) and left rocker for full reverse, and maybe Button 8 and right rocker for 100% forward. Looking forward to seeing just how much I can shove onto it from the keyboard, should make for a cool video next I think.

      Cyaneyed77 Took me ~40 hours to get used to the HOTAS and I'm still not quite as good with it - however the immersion factor makes it all worth it. Just be prepared to really stick with it as you'll feel like a fish out of water for a long time lol.

  • @himurastewie2437

    Nice video. My first two months of Elite was mouse and keyboard. Like you, I hadn't flown with a proper joystick/HOTAS setup since the days of X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and Falcon 4 with my Suncom F15 stick/throttle. I had an old Saitek Cyborg that had button and deadzone issues, then I picked up a CH Fighterstick, but the throttle was out of stock so I sent it back, and then splurged on a TM Warthog and it's been amazing. Once you're used to it, it really becomes second nature.

    Thanks for this video mate. i am just delving into the world of elite on xbox one with a Hotas. Another tip is to experiment with the "yaw into roll" settings.

    I'm not playing ED yet but plan to when I get a quiet moment, as I finally have a beefy enough machine. I never did get on with a mouse for "flying" games so I have a HOTAS-X sitting waiting for me to find the time. I think you just saved me a fair few hours of experimenting. Even if I disagree with your choice at least I've seen your reasoning and your comments will certainly help!

    I found this to be a perfectly capable stick for the price. I'll be upgrading to another soon, but if your unsure if a HOTAS setup is for you, this is a good way to go, as it's cheap. I managed to pick one up for £30, and for that, it's a bargain.

    Now that you jumped in the rabbit hole you might want to look into some voice commands :)
    Voice attack is free (or dirt cheap if you want to support the guy and have more than 30 commands). It can even work with my crazy foreign accent :)
    I have only played ED with HOTAS so my situation is reversed whenever I use a mouse I feel like a crazy drunkard :D

    :) I brought one of these to play ED, first pc game in years for me :) Had to be done as i played it on the BBC when i was about 10 so was a big part of my childhood. (i was crap by the way i always died while docking for no reason)
    A tip from yr previous video when you set up the mouse helped me out with the joystick, if you set the show mouse icon you get a little yellow dot in the centre of the HUD seemed to help me out a lot when traveling to ports and outposts.
    also means if i hit space it disappears and i can then use the hat switch to look around, works ok for me:)
    I use the rocker as my thrust up and down but now i have an ASP i may start to change things as my dogfighting skills are mnaaa at best and need to work on a set up to improve that.
    great videos by the way, have helped me a lot and probably saved me a ton of time if i had tried to work all that out myself :)

    Just got my TM Hotas X, and I completely agree, it's a bit of a learning curve. My first use of it, I went to training, and now I am starting to try to use it in actual gameplay. As you said, I have been playing with mouse and keyboard, and got quite comfortable with that, now have the H.O.T.A.S., and it is a bit of a struggle

  • @teuf9180
    @teuf9180 8 лет назад

    its a perspective thing. I used a joy stick from the start and it's seamless. I have the Hotas, it was a great upgrade from the logitech 3dex. Very intuitive for use in ED and using voice attack to fill in the gaps

  • @spektor25
    @spektor25 9 лет назад +2

    I got that same HOTAS and I just cannot get my self to use it. The first night I got it, I was super excited. Played for a few hours with it. Realized I could not hit a barn while standing in front of it. Since than I brought my self to try it again, and pretty much got the same results. Btw I use fixed beams ad my main guns on the viper. With keyboard and mouse, I feel like a sergeant. With the hotas, I feel like a drunk person trying to mange not to miss the toilet.

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  9 лет назад

      It takes a lot of practice no doubt about it. I did about 6 hrs at the start where I was unable to hit anything but after I switched to gimballed weapons it became a lot easier. Like I said at the end of the video, I'm still only at around 50% compared to mouse and keyboard. I think I'm getting there though.

    • @spektor25
      @spektor25 9 лет назад

      AdoredTV I fully agree on the gumballed weapons part. But I just refuse to switched from my size 2 fixed beam lasers. I believe the gumballed ones take more power as well. Plus, I swear they are just so inaccurate.

    • @spektor25
      @spektor25 9 лет назад +1

      And ones u get past 1.5km forget it. U can't hit anything. I guess it's all in practice. Maybe ones I get more thing and money in the game, I'll give it another go or get my new pc up and running. Cause at the moment I'm playing on a gaming laptop

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  9 лет назад

      spektor25 It's true gimballed weapons are really bad at range, and do less damage per hit. They are just so much more reliable otherwise though. I'm the same currently - even on the mouse I'm not great with fixed weapons but it'll take a while before I even get that close with this HOTAS.

    • @spektor25
      @spektor25 9 лет назад +1

      AdoredTV I should mention I only play PvE and with fixed lasers I'm amazing. So when I picked up the hotas I was really lacking in that department and I did not like it. But I think ones the oculus rif comes out to the public, I'm going to have no choice but to pick up that hotas again.. hehehe

    Hello,
    I have seen your videos on youtube, but I still don't understand, how to do (configure) it on my own. Would help me, to configure my joystick? I have a x56 (not the blue Rhino, the black one) and I play "Elite: Dangerous". Before the x56, I had the x52 and everything was configured well. But with this joystick, I have my problems.
    Although I have activated Flight Assist, the ship seems restless. If I move the joystick, nothing happens at first. Only at a certain point, the ship reacts. But then too hard. As a result, I find it difficult to "calm down" the ship, especially when I'm rolling. It affects the RX and RZ axes, rolls and tilts. The joystick itself is in perfect condition. It's just a question of the right configuration. And unfortunately I find no good guide in my language (German). I think it has to do with deadzones, sensitivity and adjustable curves (in the Logitech tool). What I want is for the ship, if it reacts once, not to react abruptly, but the intensity of the reaction increases the farther I move the joystick. Can it also have something to do with "analog" and "digital"? I really need help with that. I already have a problem getting out of a station without causing an accident. I would really appreciate it if you could help me with that.
    Kind regards

    It probably took me half an hour give or take just to get comfortable with my xbox controller setup. Thanks for a great overview. The only thing I miss on the stick with this setup is the fire groups cycle. When mining, I need to switch from prospectors and back to mining lasers all the time, so will probably use the chaff key for that.
    You're not joking about how difficult it is to switch from mouse/keyboard though!! I stupidly bought a Python on the same night as I used my Hotas for the first time, and had a terrifying 20 minutes where I really struggled to even get out of the dock without losing 4 weeks worth of credit savings!!

    Great in depth tutorial and setup tips! I've been looking at one of these as I've currently got a keyboard and Logitech extreme setup, which works pretty well for me. But I do notice that once in a while I got lost on the keyboard in the middle of combat and if i start panicking, then I pretty much die on the WASDFR thruster setup. I think this is the next best budget option for me or the Thrustmaster T16000 M throttle and slider throttle. But since this has the detent at 50% I'm leaning to this setup.

    I got the same hotas x today and I feel like a cripple with it. with the mouse and keyboard Im incomparably more accurate and nimble. should I keep trying with the hotas or go back to the mouse?

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  8 лет назад

      +EU Ropa You will always be more accurate with a mouse and the HOTAS-X isn't very accurate even for a stick. What you're experiencing now though is just what you are like for a few days though. It will improve, and you'll love the extra immersion - just know that you'll never be as accurate with it, ever.

    Having an issue where the rocker is also coming up as the twist for the joystick

  • @newrez
    @newrez 2 года назад

    I know this is quite an old video, so sorry for rezzing it. I hope someone has a solution. I have been following your controls as the seem to be the most intuitive. Im coming up with a slight problme though.
    I have the same hotas X as you have, but im encountering a problem in bindings. When I set the yaw to twist it sets is as the Z axis - totally fine, but for some reason, the rocker switch on the back of the throttle seems to also be for the Z axis so I cannot set forward and rear thrust as you have. Does anyone have any solutions for this?

    • @newrez
      @newrez 2 года назад +1

      Ok, i sorted out my problem! It was stupidity on my part. You have to make sure the light on the throttle side is lit up green and not red. Mine was red as I had some how switched the controller to PS3 mode. To fix, switch back to PC mode and unplug and replug the hotas.

      Maverik gaming Do you have throttle set to "Full Range" in options? If so you want it set to "Forward Only".

    Try out TrackIR for even better immersion. I'm using FaceTrackNoIR, it's free and uses your webcam to track your face. The PS3's webcam - the PS Eye - is pretty good for the job, because it has a high frame rate, and is really cheap, although you need paid driver for it to work on windows, but it is worth the couple of dollars.

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  9 лет назад

      I've had a look at this before but it didn't work well with my webcam though I heard the PS3 cam was good for it yeah. I've been looking at EDTracker also - just waiting to see what I should go for. This will probably push me to look at something soon.

    • @rtitusz
      @rtitusz 9 лет назад +2

      AdoredTV I have used a Logitech C920 for tracking before, and that was pretty good aswell. But the PS Eye has a bit less input lag, and bought from ebay it costs only 1/10th of the Logitech.
      FaceTrack has its flaws I admit, but it's free so I don't complain.

    excellent video, can tell you put a lot of effort into the production. One quick thought, why not use button 5 as a secondary shift button and use 5+Hat for your energy allocation? Then as an added perk you could use button 6+hat for moving your head ;) also frees up button 7 for whatever

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  8 лет назад

      +Dreded There are a bunch of combination you can do if you're comfortable with it. I'm not so keen on using shift buttons for stuff I'll be using a lot, mostly reserving that for the menus but if you find it works for you then that's great. I think I used my stick button 3 as a second shift button eventually. ;)

    I did not really understand the interface mode. Your using the hat switch to toggle the various interface panels, but you are already using that for landing thruster's and shift + 8 for systems panel etc, so I could not see how it was possible to put anything else on to the hat switch. I was following everything through perfectly until you got to the interface mode switches and I kind of lost the plot, so could you please try and explain to me exactly how you have every key bind on the joystick and keyboard.

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  9 лет назад

      Shaun Broderick It's Interface Mode so when you have any interface up the hat switch will navigate around the menus instead of acting as thrusters.
      In flight - the hat switch acts as thrusters.
      As soon as you use Shift(8) + hat left or right, you get to either the targets (left) or system (right) menu
      Once you are there the hat switch navigates through the menu options until you exit the interface mode
      I also have button 11 on the throttle set for headlook (toggle mode) which I also use the hat switch for looking around.
      If you can't get it to work just use normal W,A,S,D for up, down, left, right and Q, E for left, right menus. The hat switch should work fine though.

      Thank you very much for your swift response, and for explaining this in more detail. I have only just got Elite Dangerous today, so have not even had chance yet to try it out, so I will see if I can get everything to work, and will spend some time experimenting, and getting used to the flight controls. I have already set up the joystick curves in preparation for implementing this into ED after following your video on how to set this up.
      Many thanks for your help, and I look forward to your next video.

    Out of curiosity, where did you get that blank QRC for the HOTAS X? I've been searching, and all I come up with are ones that have already been labelled. I'm just starting out in Elite, and I picked up the HOTAS X (Well, it's getting delivered tomorrow), but, and I hope you don't mind that I'm starting out with your layout as at least a starting point. It seems VERY logical to my mind to have it laid out as you do. Also, I was wondering, seeing as I don't have mine yet, can you do a shift-b1+b2 type dealie?

      Unsure on the multiple shift buttons (could be game dependent) but there will be some way to do it, maybe using xmapper or some other prog. Feel free to copy my whole layout, I don't mind. ;)

      +AdoredTV Well, I did find out one thing. I just got my Hotas X, and I am just in LOVE! But, I digress; I know you had the Thrust fforward and backward on the individual sides of the rocker, but I found out (just a few minutes ago, and I didn't know if you knew) that the rocker outputs a full range analog signal, and it can help give you even more fine tuning on the forward/backward thrusting.

    • @adoredtv
      @adoredtv  8 лет назад

      +ChozoSR388 Yes I noticed that myself a bit later, though it's still really sensitive and can sometimes interfere with other bindings I find...

    Hello! Elite Dangerous player here. I know this video was out for a while, but I still have hope of my question being answered. My paddle keeps registering as a Z - AXIS input. Because of this, I cant use the paddles as buttons, because it unbinds my yaw control. Does anybody know how to fix this?
