ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In my opinion, Demon's souls has the most satisfying lore out of all the souls games. The story of the Valley of Defilement is one of the most fleshed out - a tragic tale of lost faith in a truly miserable environment. This will likely be one of my last Demon's Souls videos (for now), and that's mostly because it's very difficult to gather footage and represent ideas visually. The game isn't on PC so it's difficult to manipulate the camera, remove the HUD AND stay alive. I hope you enjoyed this series! It never got as many hits as my other videos, but the perfectionist in me needed to see it made.

Even before watching this video, I felt like a douche trespassing into the core of the valley of defilement where everybody down there just wants peace, but I had suffered too much getting there to show any mercy. Blighttown is heaven compared to that hell hole.
I'm trying to think of the equivalent of those levels to Bloodborne, and I believe the Nightmare Frontier is that, complete with low frame rates and poison swamps.
+William See the nightmare frontier barely had any framedrops though, conpared to old yharnam
kellbellsparkles I'm reconsidering my decision about playing Demon Souls now, its impossible that there's even a thing in this universe that's worse than blightown, Blightown is my least favorite thing this world has ever produced I seriously dislike that place and wish to never ever go there, if blightown was optional, that area would never have seen my ass
(Blightown is optional). :P
kellbellsparkles I don't feel bad, as in the sense I did wrong by killing her but it's upsetting to know her intentions were only to ease the pain for the lost and the disfigured. Her intentions were good but she slowly became corrupted and the outcomes were awful. The disgusting abominations that were created from the souls of knights who were only there to see what her state was, not kill her, were all consumed. Honestly she's not evil herself but the demon soul corrupted her making her create things that would only worsen the world, so it is best to realize she is a threat to be ended. Blind faith is bad, but it's a shame Her and Garl are tragic heroes. If only they had awoke their eyes to see that they were wrong and weren't abandoned.
My Dearest Astraea... I have failed you.........
+Garl Vinland no Garl, you didn't fail anyone, you tried your best to defend your friend, don't blame yourself, blame us, we are the true monsters, we aren't heroes, we're murderers.

+WorkGalaxy47 I don't agree with that. Yes, it's tragic what happens to them and Garl's loyalty is just awesome in every conceivable way, but Astraea NEEDS to die. She is an archdemon. If the world is to get better as a whole, she needs to be put down. That is the truth.

Our actions towards maiden astraea could look twisted if we take the perspective of "she was taking care of the rejected and the forgotten in a god-forsaken place", but as much as it hurts, it was necessary. As an archdemon, she was gathering souls. Sooner or later, the old one would call upon all the archdemons to aquire enough souls and power to destroy the world completely. Do we even know if archdemons can reject or resist the great one's call?
Since we kill and gather each of the archdemons souls, doesn't that make us an archdemon? Where is the transitory line there? The player can opt to lull the old one back to slumber, so if it's the case that we effectively become an archdemon by the end of the game, then it is probably reasonable to conclude that Astraea could resist the call, right?
@@electro_spectre I don't understand lore really well but I think you have to get some kind of pact with old one to become a true demon, maybe fog manipulates them that they will get power by this for exchange for souls they gather and more souls you bring stronger you are, but somehow we (player) don't have to give souls because our strength is not dependent fully on old one so technically we are not archdemon because our power isn't from him. Sorry if I'm mistaken I don't know many things like how maiden in black gives us power because if she exchanges our souls with old one then my theory sucks
@@konturjanI think maiden in black is a demon giving us power. So that means that we are using the power of demons whether that being bad is Beyond me.

The Virgin Mary exists in the Demon's Souls universe?
That stood out to me as well. I wonder how that fits into the game's timeline.
Makes sense. And it seems the line was cut from the Atlus version of the game, so it may have been an accidental reference to real world Christianity.
AzierWill many games in an alternate universe use religious imagery and mythology because often times there might not be a word as succinct. for instance: Messiah. frequently used in alternative universes despite it's origin being in Christian mythology. or the use of "jihad" in dune. it's simply to sound organic to the listener. but, from soft doesn't do that shit anymore. instead of saying something silly like "Christ be with you",drawing upon our real history, it would rather be "may the good blood guide your way" because they make their own mythology. and their own mythology existed in demon souls...sooooo yeah I don't get it either.
Although I understand the analogy with "Spartans" and "Messiah," those are words that have become an eponymous adjective and common noun respectively (i.e., you can use them in lowercase to mean something different from their uppercase Proper Noun versions, like "spartan training habits" or "a messiah figure to his people"). This means they can generally be understood without necessarily knowing or referencing their etymology, and thus aren't immersion-breaking.
However, the name "Virgin Mary" is strictly a proper noun and is generally understood ONLY by its etymology as the name of a specific Christian/Catholic figure. When that specific person doesn't exist in the world you're in, it's immersion-breaking (which can be intentional, but it doesn't seem to be the case here).
Dodgy translation, not exactly uncommon in Souls games.
Feels awesome to now be able to enjoy these Demon's Souls videos after playing the Remake. Thank you VaatiVidya.
I have to credit his dedication to this community and series if you watch his more recent redux of this prepare to cry its such a different watch but still has lots of callbacks to this video. His last line “so ask yourself slayer of demons, do the ends justify the means?” When I heard it I had to come back and watch this one again
This was the original video that got Vaati my attention 😊 He was able to make this encounter more meaningful after watching.
Agreed! Although I took no pleasure in slaying Astraea and Garl, they were truly benevolent.. 😪😪
Astraea bears a huge likeness to Berserk's Farnese, not only in appearance ( even the hair is the same ), but in her motivations as well ( coming with terms that the church isn't saint and eventually going in the opposite direction by using sorcery ).
Demon's Souls overral really gives me a Berserk vibe, which I love. No wonder Miyazaki is a fan.
Still waiting for either Vaati, ENB or Spy to make a Souls/Berserk comparison video.
I keep an eye out for all the connections, but I missed this one! Nice catch
And that's far from the only Berserk connection in the Souls series. The most obvious is the Greatsword: "No human was intended to wield a sword of this weight or destructiveness. Only a few famed warriors have ever wielded this great blade, for it challenges the very limits of human ability." Obviously in shape and design it resembles Guts' Dragonslayer sword, but the description really hints at that since Guts was often seen as having demon-like qualities and unmatched strength and ferocity in battle.
Personally though, I love the little hints to it. Like the skeleton wheels ripped straight out of the pages of the manga.
***** That we can certainly agree on. In fact, that's one of the characters that opens up Farnese to the realization that the church is actually corrupt and evil. Though, in Berserk it's because the church has been infiltrated by demons.
JustSomeDamnGinger And then the church allies itself with you-know-who in the latest chapters. Btw, there are some new chapters out, check it.
it kinda sucks that u only made 5 videos on demon souls loreAlthough they are pretty great :D
With the remake coming out, perhaps more will be made.

Isn't "God" actually the Old One?
In which case, since she's become a demon, and by extension, a servant of the Old One, isn't she still serving God?
That's one of the plot twist in the game, the church hide the truth about the "God" they workship also the same "demon" there try to defeat. They symbol their "God" as tree but irony the arch demon looks like roots.
Octo Yang i think, that they have lost that knowledge of the old one being their god.
Octo Yang Hey I know this is an old comment but I always thought that the Old one being God was actually debatable, mainly because FromSoft usually don't give us such blunt answers in things, especially something as big as that subject in the game. I have more in this theory as well
Guess that's whats great about the souls community so many things to talk about.
AUTOBOTGJB1997
"An old wooden amulet resembling the Old One.
It can utilize both miracles and spells.
The symbol of God was nothing more than the Image of the Old One."
- Item description for Talisman of Beasts.
I am aware of the item description.
my personal opinion is that the theory of "all miracles are actually spells" is reversed and that all spells are actually miracles, but the miracles were tainted by the old one (and turned into spells).
One reason for my belief in this is that miracles are listed as prayers to god, and the main point of you killing demons is to lull the old one back to slumber ( that's the "good" path anyway)
So being said, why would the old one (if he was god) answer the prayer of someone interfering with his plans
Another reason is the relationship of Sage Freke, Saint Urbain, and Uria the witch. Throughout the game if you get all the miracles from Saint Urbain nothing happens, while Uria warns that you shouldn't take her magic, and Freke becomes so obsessed with power (over the sorcery and souls used for it) that he tells you to potentially doom the world, and kill the maiden in black.
Finally and it's a minor reason, but the souls you get can be used for different things so.... the end
I can't even describe how i felt when i heard her voice before even fight her. I felt SO SORRY to start the battle...
And it is even worse when you notice that Garl is just protecting her...
This is the highest moment in the game, in my opinion.
"This is the highest moment in the game, in my opinion."
No, you are completely wrong!
Because it is not your opinion, it is an indisputable fact.
:-)
Garl did nothing wrong! 😓😭
You really beleive to be a beacon of hope, Astrae?
Yes, you managed to keep your sanity. You kept your form. And yet, all but one of your comrade knights are dead.
You bring comfort to deprived and abandoned, but they are still sick and deformed, living in darkness and dirt.
You resurrected those aborted children, those that didn't had a chance to live. But they are not children now, they're deformed monstrous creatured, swiming in flith, carrying plague in them. And they - children that were stipped of a chance to live - now too have to fight and try to kill a demonslayer.
You talk about living peaceful and humble life - yet your followers try to kill outsiders for their souls.
I think Astrae is a beacon of darkness, a warning. That evil can find a key to even the purest heart. Regardless of her intent, she still needs to harvest souls for The Old One. And she does that, what shouls be so wrong for her morals. Beleiving herself doing good for these people, she commits to the evil, that takes root in her heart. She uses evil to do good, even though she does a little evil in the prosses. And when you're use to doing little evils, it woulnd't be hard to justify doing a little bigger evil - after all, we're aiming for the good here. Step by step moral compass is broken and we're full on evil service - but unlike mindless monsters, we feel justified in our way, delusional that we need to do all of it for the greater good.
It's like in Lord of the Rings Gandalf said about The Ring's effect on hearts.
Astrae shows us that even the purest can fall. Humans can evolve into something new - not just midless slaves to the demons, but completely implemented and commited to their evil ways. But our characters comes in and cuts this transition short.
What do we have to take from you, Astrae? Your soul.
+demilung Justice, good and evil are all but point of view. Everything was like 2 sides of the same coin. Once you pick your stand/side you will fail to see the big picture.
There is no purity in Astrae's compromise, but the conviction of the player is the purest motivation there is.
Travis McNasty I am going to find you.....
+demilung "The road to hell is paved with good intentions"

Personally, I consider Maiden Astraea to be the most vile demon in the game, mostly because she toys with the player's emotions by saying that she's only trying to help the unfortunate in a saintly tone.
Given that she's effectively helping the Old One scour humanity completely, in the process of "helping the unfortunate".

Damnit Vaati....this one is so good. Your best yet. The story in Demon's Souls is so flippin' deep.
Cheers brother
Vineares Oh yeah. Demons Souls has some of the most tragic, fucked up lore in the entire series.
The entirety of Astraea's character makes the Valley of Defilement arguably the best archstone in DeS imho
I still think about this girl all these years later, god damn it's more than just the concept but how it stands out in the lore. A character that almost demands more thought.
Lots of people are saying that Astrea was noble, and are taking a stand with the demons and the old one in doing so. Regardless of the fact that she tried to help those in the valley, she was helping the old one wreck the entire world out of spite it seems. She had good intentions, but her deeds were still wrong because she chose to become what was clearly destroying the world. Our quest as the great slayer of demons is transparent, not some kind of misinformed quest. The narrator of the story even says at the end of the story that the world had a great new hero, and gave us a very satisfying and happy ending. Astrea was content to help the old one, showing that she had succumbed to corruption and chose to help those in the valley instead of the rest of the world which was suffering a fate that was much worse.
What a well written comment, my friend! I totally agree! Astraea did great good? She became an arch-demon, resurrected aborted (= dead) children and let her worshippers kill random people... she was just another goon of the Old One, the guy that wanted to kill people and take their souls...
Relaxed The Old One promises oblivion, no more pain. Thats the logic of Allant and probably the same for Astraea
The concept of an unreliable narrator is foreign to you, huh?
An actually good comment here. Her deeds may seem good but they’re misguided in the bigger view of things. Her whole situation isn’t exactly black and white.
Not really, Astrea was indeed the only noble being in the world. That doesn't mean we are siding with anyone, but that we are refuting the idea that we are the good guys, and that the world was worth saving.
What kind of world that abandons innocent beings without a reason is worth saving? The old one is the consequence of that neglect and arrogance.
Is it me, or does it seem like the design of Dark Souls II's Velstadt was heavily influenced by this game's Garl Vinland ?
AceOfBlazes and also switch the name around vinland garl vingarl seem familiar?
zach rice ...Vengral? The headless warrior? Sorry for the late reply.
It's not you, it's intentional. The Grant (the weapon that both use) is a pretty big giveaway.
Quite late, but in Dark Souls 3, Eygon of Carim is also based off Vinland Garl, just based on some of the armour but more so his purpose and weapon.
Lyde Koitz Ay, I recognize that Lady Nisovin profile pic.
Her line "There is nothing here for you to pillage and plunder" was a huge shock, I actually started crying my first time in this fight, You realise that that in all the souls universe, you are nothing more than a rampaging crusader cutting down everything with a health bar without question. I wish something like this could be done for Old King Doran. He's my favourite character in the game, doubtlessly a badass, and wields the only weapon in the game linked to the Old One, but there's so little information about him.
Great job on this one Vaati, I'm glad so many are coming back to Demon's Souls. Back to where it all began, and back to the shades of moral grey that the game introduced and did better than any other in the series to date.
If Astraea was indeed using the Souls to give to the Old One, then she's not wholly good so there's at least a part of her death that serves a separate good from merely subduing the Old One.
GuardianOwl That's pretty good work. I would wonder if the 3 aspects you're talking about in regards to the key could mean Demonbrandt, Soulbrandt, and Northern Regalia. I also wonder why Allant didn't try to fuse the swords together since he could retain the power of Soulbrandt and claim legitimate rulership over Boletaria.
I also wonder why Doran uses a Soul Form version when he himself isn't a Soul. And, I wonder how it is he is immortal, and how he hasn't gone insane because he's not trying to gain souls. He's just waiting in the Mausoleum.
Maybe NorthernRegalia makes one immune to the insanity of losing ones souls to the Old One. Or maybe Doran was made immortal by The Monumentals since he definitely has met them. If he founded Boletaria, then he was the one that the Monumentals gave the Archstone to. This makes me think that he had a hand in defeating the Old One since he has the sword that was left in the world along with the Old One. So either Doran is as old as the Old One, or he came into possession of the sword somehow later and uses it possibly against the Old One and then used his status as a hero to found a Kingdom.
There are so many questions surrounding him.
GuardianOwl Yeah, but the other half of Northern Regalia is the same as Demonbrandt, meaning you can only access it's power the purer you are. If you use NorthernRegalia at a neutral character tendency, your attack rating is 270. But at pure tendency in either direction, that attack power more than doubles. So it could be argued that one who is pure white will tap into the fullest potential of the Demonbrandt portion of the blade, and vice versa for pure black.
Also, you have to consider that a being of Pure White wouldn't be able to use NorthernRegalia either if we follow your logic because the Soulbrandt half is meant to banish man himself. So if a Pure Black person would be killed by the weapon due to the Demonbrandt half, then a Pure White person would be killed due to the Soulbrandt half. And we know that Doran is Pure White because he can one shot you even with the Dark Silver Set and Ring of Magical Dullness mitigating the magic damage of N.R.
As for his armor, I think the armor being seen on the king on the Archstone is ceremonial and the Ancient King armor is Doran's preferred set.
fallenangel2100 But then that doesn't explain how you as the player character can use it without consequences.
fallenangel2100 It doesn't work that way though. NorthernRegalia's power is directly tied to Character Tendency, not any kind of experience. Defeating evil, or becoming evil makes it stronger.
No, I think that all 3 weapons are what they are. Powered by your intent and your actions, and they only harm whatever they strike, not the wielder in any way.
Everyday, VatiVidya makes authors. And people to type long comments.
I pity Astrea, but feel no guilt in ending her. Her "pureblood" soul gives me the impression that she was raised among nobility such as her knight friends, and went to the valley of defilement because she pitied those less fortunate than her. This pity eventually turned to pride, in my opinion, as she felt god had abandoned these people, she believed herself a suitable replacement.
So clearly she had good intentions to begin with, but I think the good she's done for the valley is vastly overstated. We don't know exactly what was done to help the impure, but it clearly wasn't enough. They're still mindless, violent, and decrepit. Even if they are happy (which I doubt), consider that she is helping people that eagerly murder the innocent. And the resurrection of the aborted? Disgusting. Children born into a world of poison and disease, without skin, and without the prospect of ever growing up, exploring the outside world, or fulfilling dreams. She is propagating a violent and isolationist nation of murderers that poses a threat to all life outside its borders. Her corruption as a demon has blinded her to monstrosity she's become.
Furthermore, "There is nothing here for you to plunder." A lie, obviously. She is well aware of the value of her own demon soul, Garl's noble equipment, and of course, the *ahem* vast pile of gold trinkets she is casually leaning against. Which is telling, to me. By the time you reach her, she seems to be passively accepting all of the valley's wealth and misplaced adoration, as well as the murder of innocent souls to keep herself alive.
She was a demon through and through, that believed itself to be a messiah. THAT is why she is the "most impure demon of all".
While I can see the arguments for both interpretations (Astrea as an example of a 'good' demon, or Astrea as someone who has managed to passively become an evil through her own good intentions) I think that your take on things is more consistent with the game's general ethos. If you read Demons' Souls from an anarchic perspective, which seems to me to be the most natural reading, it seems to be basically arguing that one person accruing power over others (people's souls) tends inevitably towards evil and downfall. Under this interpretive framework, the misguided attempts to resurrect fetuses, the cultish adoration of Astrea by her deranged worshipers, the giant pile of wealth, and her basic status as an archdemon all seem to me to indicate that she is intended as a negative portrait of power even exercised to the ends of charity: over time, it seems, she has turned to violent isolationism and reveling in the adoration of her worshipers, while still believing herself to be a good person.
If nothing else, the giant pile of gold seems to indicate that reading. It's a very stark icon (the pious saint sitting on a mound of treasure), placed very prominently. I don't see how a good thematic reading can just ignore that imagery.
Mind, I don't neccesarily _agree_ with what I take to be Demons' Souls ethos and themes - I'm an eschatological anarchist at best (depending on my mood I might agree that anarchy is desirable in an ideal world, but social power is both an inevitability and a necessity in our present reality). I simply think that an anarchic reading is the clearest and most consistent interpretive framework, and under it, Astrea doesn't seem like quite so much of a positive figure.
tl;dr: I agree with your take on things.
The pureblood soul refers to the fact she is the most pure demon of them all. I believe its to do with who the person was before they succumbed to demonhood. She had a shining white soul and wanted to help the downtrodden, so much so that she sold her soul to try to ease their pain. Her compassion ended up corrupting her completely.
to be fair she cant move hahaah so while the gold goes to her she cnat do anything about it LOL and garl vinland is too damn loyal to her hed kill anyone trying to steal from her
Alan Solomon I agree with both of these interpretations. They seem far more in tune with the themes of the game. Not to mention the blatant imagery of the saint sitting on piles of treasure.
She is the true "prize" of Arch Demons as well because she thinks she is doing good, and her appearance of doing good sucks more souls than any other demon possibly could. She is literally getting people to GIVE her souls rather than simply taking them, or having a need to fight for them. She draws from the hopeless and uses their corpses to suck more souls out of the living after the fog was unleashed upon the lands.
She doesn't even fight back when you get to her to destroy her. She knows that her power is gone, that you have defeated her army. Her strength was within them. Her ability to get them to worship her. So she has no strength over you. She cannot fight.
Barry L
I'm quite certain the pureblood soul must be referring to her social status, when you consider what it turns into: The Blueblood Sword. "Blueblood" unequivocally meaning a person of noble birth, and the sword itself being notable for scaling its damage with luck, like the luck of being born into nobility.
Sitting on hoarded treasures and tons of goldcoins and then proclaiming that theres nothing to loot and plunder? Having all the knights that went with her killed off piling them up infront of her to slowly rot away? That maiden was alot of things but surely not innocent. She had become an arch demon and no matter how passive she might have been the fact remained that she gathered souls for the old one and worked towards destroying the world. I think she simply went mad when she realized what the valley of defilement really was and lives an illusion.
Souls thought are not looted and plundered are they now? She clearly is reffering to possible treasure. And while goldcoins might be not much worth there are many other precious things to be looted and plundered, like ores, armor, weapons, trinkets.
Completely agree, it was necessary for her to die to lull the old one back to slumber and prevent a crisis. And she was pillaging the souls of travellers to fuel this catastrophe, that could wipe out so many innocents, and yet she claims to be innocent. Maiden Astraea claims that she and her residents have been outcasted, yet she prospers off of this, whilst the world above descends into anarchy. And yeah, like you said, straight up murdering the knights that accompanied her was hitting it fairly low.
But the Old One is literally God
@@orxy5316 Or he was the curse that god placed upon the world, the intro is very iffy about that detail
@@riptors9777 it's the punishment for humans who abused the gift that god gave them. The Soul Arts clearly corrupt humans, making them power hungry and distructive. That's what they did in the 1st day. They abused their gift of conciousness and clarity for power, and turned on one another.

They do probably one of the most important things for some gamers: they make feel - and think about the deepest questions. Life and death, good and evil, light and dark, human nature and monsters, fate and free will. Thus, they make us truly evolve.
I'm actually Russian and live in Russia. But I'm sending deep respect to everyone in the community over the ocean.
Thank you, Vaati, for what you are doing. You seem a great person. Let more people like you walk the Earth and light the sparks in our - human souls. Who knows, maybe exactly guys like you make the unwritten history of mankind. For we all act upon our ideals.
Sorry, if that sounds stupid or naiive.
Praise the sun.
Александр Демидов You received no replies for this. I just wanted you to know that I saw it. A tree always makes a sound when it falls. But it's still nice for it to know that someone heard it. Hope things are well for you. :)
+Александр Демидов the cheese is strong with this one
One of my favourite videos of yours. Good stuff
+Joel Everett one of mine too! Thanks joel
VaatiVidya are you going to be making more lore for the Demon's Soul Lore series?
jesus lord man, your voice is so good, you should be giving voice for some movie or cartoon
you brought this story on excellent way with your voice
This is by far the best "Scene" in a Videogame. I mean NO Game reached it that I everytime feel bad, sad and guilty when I hear the Soundtrack. I never played the Game, I only saw them in Lets Plays and whatever. This is amazing...
I always hated killing her so I always let her kill herself because that's essentially what she's doing anyways.
Dude I just got to that point in the remake today and I felt so terrible fighting fighting them, hearing their speeches, and seeing the infants. I felt like a monster for entering their domain.
Yay a new Demon's Souls lore! :D I have been waiting for a new one for so long heh
I can't believe it's been 8 months mannnnnnnn
Yea hehe. When I got on and saw a new Demon's Souls lore I got really exited. And Good job by the way :D
+VaatiVidya Are you still doing these or? Just curious 'cause I want more :P prepare to cry indeed.
One thing that rings in my head is that Astraea and Garl are actually Lovers, or at least Garl Loves Astraea. In his death quote, he called Astraea as "Dearest Astraea". Translate that to my main language (Indonesian) and you'll get "Astraea yang terkasih/tercina" which can also be translated back as "Astraea, my love."
At least that's what I got in mind. Remember Ciaraan and Arty, it's not common to call a common comrade as "Dearest/Dear" if it's not a special relationship.
I kind of cried. This game gets dark at points.
So I started a new build recently focusing on the BlueBlood Sword. Of course, this means I have to kill Astraea and Flamelurker. The character was more or less useless without the sword, relying on soul ray off of a silver catalyst at 30 mag, which fails to one-shot depraved ones. So I finally get to Astraea, and, Garl is borderline immune to magic. So all I have is my crescent falchion. I never thought this boss would actually be a problem for anyone, but I go up to Garl Vinland and start parrying him, riposting for a measly 100 damage. I miss a parry, he lets me have it. I back up to heal... and he straight up takes off into the swamp. So I try to bait him toward land, and because of distance I fuck up a parry, and he double hits me knocking me into the plague-infested swamp water. And I actually died on Maiden Astraea. As much as I never thought I'd see that happen, all I could think of was Astraea saying "GAAAAAAAAARRRRLLLL that kills people!"
My souls, on the other hand...
It's funny; I've been thinking about going back to Demon's Souls for awhile now, just to get back to the roots of why I loved the series to much. So much story in all the characters, so many things that haven't been talked about..
I appreciate that you brought this back, even though it'll be the only one for awhile.
Now we’ll cry in 4K. :(
I was about to say that. Be prepared
Woah, I wasn't expecting a new Demon's Souls video. A good surprise.
One of the best stories in the series, and one of the finest locations in the series as well. I quite literally went berserk on my first game after killling her, got angry and killed every npc and even tried to kill the maiden in black without knowing I couldn't do it until the time was right. And then I did it, that is the ending I chose right there.
Why did you go berserk?
Monsterslayer Emil I got the impression Astraea wasn't really an evil character, she was trying to help, but to my character that was meaningless, her soul was all that mattered. (I got that vibe more than once in both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls)
So I decided to embrace the idea that my character was an evil bastard and began killing everyone. In the end I found out I had just the ending for a character like mine, so that felt great.
You went.... BERERK Guts?!!?
André Gomes de Oliveira You just totally got into the character
Man after finally playing DS2 it occurs to me that the King's Aegis bears an impressive resemblance to Garl Vinland. Even storywise, he acts towards Vendrick as Garl does to Astraea O_o
+Josiah Fincham yup, Velstadt is a refrence to Garl of vinland
Ray Maelstrom Archdrake Baller. I got Demon's Souls when it came out and I freaking loved it, then never got DS1 or DS2 till just recently when I picked up Scholar of the First Sin. Thoroughly enjoying it, just got to Drangleic Castle.
Oooh! Have fun with my favorite boss in the game! you'll know Him when you fight him, THUNDAAAAA
Ray Maelstrom Archdrake lol alright. I've been rocking a Dex based build, use Falchions till I got my hands on an Uchigatana which is now +10. Working on upgrading my Blacksteel and Washing Pole, can't fucking wait to get my hands on Alonne's katana though.
yeah its good, be sure to get the manslayer!
Astrea has been my favorite souls character since her debut in 2009, she has such a strong character despite a relatively small role in the game.
Absolutely love her, I love Garl too. All my favorite spells in that game come from the pure demons soul.
Dude. I've been watching ALL your prepare to Cry's . and I must say they are super good. Very professional and great production .. Keep it up man!
Such a sad tale... On my first playthrough I came here last.
I had slayed demon after demon, seeing the evil they bring, and I fought with the knowledge that I was doing the just thing, the RIGHT thing.
But Astraea broke that.
I began to doubt myself, my purpose in this place...
I questioned the intentions of the Maiden in Black, and I began to see what I was becoming.
A demon, who is willing to commit great evil, for great good. But...
How do I know that my goal is just?! How am I to be sure that I have not been fooled, been USED?!
And... in the end... I saw that I was evil. My core was rotten, my humanity left behind long ago...
And as the Maiden went to lull the old one back to slumber, I was given a choice.
To try to reclaim my humanity... or to embrace my new, darker, Demonic Soul.
And, to this day, I am still not sure which is the correct choice...
Actually, you're wrong, though your poetic-theme is quite intriguing. The truth is basic, and mentioned as well; The Old One only lulls those who he deems to be demons to his core, and you traverse Boletaria slaying demons and claiming their souls to look like the most powerful demon.
In the end, you enter the core of the Old One, and may choose to either lull the old one to slumber, thereby undoing the soul arts and ridding the world of Demons henceforth, or kill the Maiden in Black, and let the demonic scourge devour Boletaria and inevitably the world. The true evil ending is killing the Maiden in Black, who like Astraea and the player alike, use their demonic power for the greater good. Alas, Astraea was an archdemon, and was necessary to end this plight, despite her selfless person.
I'm not a demon's souls expert by any means, played through only once, but i find it curious how the maiden in black was supposedly the most powerful demon, but now human, except with the power to bind souls to a persons beings, which makes me wonder if there is something in common inbetween demons and humans, some form of....evolution perhaps, if they can survive the transformation, or once the demon gains enough souls, it becomes like the maiden in black. Though I have almost no evidence for this, its just random speculation.
Jesus fuck, how did you endure writing that?
That was so cringeworthy.
Didari I know that you write it 5 months ago but....
Well, we're not sure if the demonic power of the Maiden comes from her own. Someone says that she is binded to a demon, the most powerful demon of the First Scourge. Someone says that she is the demon itself.... so we can't be sure.
Another interesting theory is that there is NO difference between a human and a demon, from the first time that you use other souls to increase your power. You're feasting over other souls, just like a demon. Also, there is theory which says that the Old One once was the Tree of Life (that you can see in the Monumental speech, and also the Tree is a recurring metaphore through the game), then corrupted by something; Humankind's lust for power.
The Soul Art are based on using your soul to do magic, but when humans start using other souls than their own they corrupted the Tree, creating in this way the Old One, and becoming demons.
Yeah, it's not clear, my fault xD
Astrea support this theory, in my vision.
“Isn’t your abandonment of us punishment enough?”
That hit hard..
I remember the first time I played in this area, it made me feel uneasy. Demons Souls was such a great game.
"Be careful when you kill a monster, that you don't become one yourself."
- 8mm (movie)
This story broke my heart when i played the game.
I dont get it, she gave into the old gray one to help people who couldn't be saved, she murdered innocent people to kind of just patch up a bigger issue. I don't think killing her was a bad thing, she was still doing bad things and you have to get rid of her.
Irony being the "God" of Demon's Souls that the church worships is the very same Old One, who created the Demons they battle.
so in the end, she was never a good person?
CHECKERpatchhIppO She tried to be.
I mean she had good intentions, but execution couldv'e been a bit better X)
CHECKERpatchhIppO Couldn't. She needed demonic power to save those people, as God (which is the old one anyway xd ) didn't lend her his power.
Finally some Demon Souls's Lore!
Defiantly one of the saddest, most conflicting stories in the Souls series. Defiantly made me seriously question what I was doing in the game and whether my quest was truly justified. Never has a game made me question my role as a protagonist as the Maiden Astraea.
Just my opinion, but its stories like these that seem to have so much more depth, palpable despair, and cohesive atmosphere that Dark Souls 2 seemed a little short on. I love Dark Souls 2, but I just miss the great storytelling through subtle well placed dialogue and world details that Demon Souls and Dark Souls had. Just seemed a little more thought went into it.
Dark Souls II seems to tell it's story more directly and loudly, through scenery and actions, and with less of the implying nature Demon's Souls and the first Dark Souls had, but because of the overall weaker story that you experience throughout the game combination with that aspect, it just does not work *AS* well.
Good initial setup and bad execution is behind the story Dark Souls II has.
Although, with the DLC having come out, they vastly improve on that story aspect by focusing more on the story behind Vendrick, the Kingdoms, and Crowns themselves, which I find really interesting because of the characters introduced and the scenery presented.
As a side note, I realize how many parts of the Souls community pretty much completely shitblast Dark Souls II, unjustifiably parroting it as absolute garbage-- but I really think that it as an overall improves on a lot of things, even though it seemingly takes two steps forward and three steps back, it's still a much better game than the very vocal individuals give it credit for, and especially with the quite well thought out expansions the DLC packs have introduced; I personally believe, with no catch to it, that it is on-par with the first Dark Souls as a whole, even when certain parts fall flat.
I agree with you completely. Personally I loved the story behind DS2. There's a lot of connections you can feel like making and honestly, the story is rather subtle at times in my opinion. I just feel like due to the experience of Souls players at this point, DS2 got shitblasted because they didn't have the same shock factor due to experience, and they knew how to work out the hints of a Souls game story. So experience seemed to be influencing the game's opinions in my opinion. DS2 to me was even better than DS1, I just had a more enjoyable experience, and the DLCs are fun, clever, difficult and definitely know how to surprise me. Just an all-around good game, that fixed a lot of the issues people had always complained about (Hit detection, PVP, etc.)
This subplot is on pair with Artorias's & Sif's subplot. DksII on the other hand didn't really have such a compeling story like that.
I dunno it has few few good smaal ones, like Lucatiel's, Raimes story finally came to light, lots of little stories XD
XDarkFableX Yeah they are a few but none as powerful as this or as Sif's&Artorias's
Dark souls 2 basically didn't dare to do anything new or ground breaking, thus it comes across as pretty tame. But so is the so called "difficulty of ds2"
Hopefully bloodborne is going to tear us apart both in gameplay and story.
***** I really hope so
TheBloodthirsty Crow Artorias story is good but it isn't that great but I suppose dogs are mans best friend so we will all fall in love with Sif.
how did i miss this?!
fucking hell this was great vaati, i love this story and you really did it justice!
more demons souls please!
Astrae and quelaag are the same for me. I don't want to kill them but I have no choice. Thats a motive missing in dark souls 2. everyone there was a dead weight.
I was okay with Quelaag, it was Sif that I didn't want to kill..
For Dark Souls 2.. Um.. I guess the Old Dragon Slayer is the one I didn't want to kill. Cause Ornstein is fucking awesome... And I still want to know what the fuck he was doing there and why he's using the power of the Abyss.
I killed sif off without shedding a tear. I'm scared of dogs. In video games my first reaction to a dog type enemy is always to take out my highest damage output weapon and give it a few blasts. A horror game for me would be something like nintendogs
Lmao, that how I was with those Rat/Cat/Giant things. Did you notice at the end of the fight that he was limping?
The DLC extra cutscene where he recognizes you cut deep to me.
I'm still racking my brain of what person I hesitated to kill in DS2, maybe Vendrick cause not only was he passive, but because of his story as well. Too bad I need that soul. Lol
Yeah I saw the hurt dog moves :( and the alternate cutscene. I don't like dogs but I think sif would be my favourite dog character. And yes I was hesitating with vendrick. I hope the third dlc will include some npcs or a covenant to flesh out the world and a boss I'll regret killing. I want gravelords to return
That would be awesome, I always wanted to know more about Gravelords as well, and it'd work perfect with the Undead Crypts.. There really hasn't been an NPC in the DLC, has there?
THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART OF THE SOULS SERIES. THANK YOU BASED VAATI I LOVE YOU
I just played through Demon's Souls for the first time a few months back, and I'm just dumbfounded at all of the stuff I had no idea was hidden in this game. Some of the characters he talks to I never even saw in the game. Looks like another playthrough is in order...
Josiah Clark Yeah, I suggest you to take a look at some walkthrough of Demon's Souls by ENB, the world tendency... everything is explained. A lot of people including myself overlooked that in the first playthrough.
khrimh Oh, so this is stuff determined by world tendency? That makes much more sense then. From what I remember of my playthrough I had almost no idea what WT was or how to influence it, so I just didn't bother.
Josiah Clark
Yes, WT is very important in the game and there are a lot of characters you missed because of that. Actually, you might have noticed that while playing the game, there are soe areas you can't access and there is a message saying that you must have a pure white or pure black tendency, that's what you have to do, if you change it, you can reach those places and you'll find new NPCs (that will go to the Nexus after), new lore, new quests... Again ENB did that and there is also Exserv if you speak french, he does really great walkthroughs, the one he did with Demon's Souls was really great, you can even platinum the game using his guide, enjoy!
khrimh Thanks very much! I'm looking forward to giving it a go. :)
+Josiah Clark I would also personally recommend A German Spys Demon['s] Souls in depth playthrough, though it's extremely in depth and if that's not your thing ENB will definitely work too. But if you like that amount of depth and detail I'd definitely say it's worth the watch.
Just my opinion but i feel i should weigh in a bit here because i remember her fight pretty well as she was one of the enemies i wanted to kill most when i played demons souls the first time. There was something about the way she was mentioned prior to and seeing her surrounded by the corpses and even more than all of that her absolute arrogance while you fight her really kind of enraged me in the fight. I felt more like she took a mesiah complex upon herself rather than because people needed her more as in she believed herself to be gods hand or something and it felt more confirmed when shes speaking particularly the ending where she spitefully tells you to take your precious demons soul even though shes done nothing but garner souls herself. Just felt like she didnt see anything she did as wrong even slightly.
Yeah, it seems to me that Astraea is a representation of the kind of evil that appears to be good, whether to the perpetrator, the victim, bystanders, or more that one of these.
Man, I've been playing and following the story of Dark Souls very closely, but Demon Souls has been making me cry with each new video I watch.
In my opinion the saddest stories of characters in the souls series are like this.
Demon's Souls: Maiden Astraea
Dark Souls: The Fair Lady
Dark Souls 2: Lucatiel of Mirrah
If you want to know my reasons feel free to ask.
Archradox Well my list was about the girls of the souls series. I did kill Alonne on my playthrough of DS2 and I have two choices for Dark Souls 1 and that's Solaire and Artorias. As for Demon's Souls I don't really have many favorites because I haven't seen many playthroughs of that or played it myself.
SuperInsanewolf No love for the Crestfallen Warrior?
Dolphin3007 As I said my list for saddest stories in the souls series is pointed at the females in the game. Personally I find Crestfallen to be a bit dick-ish. Also I suppose I can add Eileen the Crow to that list what with Bloodborne being out for a decent time now.
+Dolphin3007
lol nah he's just a whiney bitch
Dutchy the Second Not to mention a wee bit psychopathic. Seriously a giant serpent is snoring and it stinks and your first thought is to kill it. Really?
I wish there were more Demon's Souls Story. Missed it so much :(
Also, I shed a tear during these video as I did when I played the game and killed her.
Astraea, can you really call that "Mercy"?
You feel pity for the misfits and the abandoned and you try to be a remedy for their pain...but can this be called " life?"
You killed your comrades and for you the sick, deformed people will kill other warriors that fight in order to safe the entire Boletaria.
You are giving hope to the miserables but probably they will never stop suffering, and suffering people will always hold tight onto their only light of hope. Wouldn't be more merciful to end all their misery?
As long as The Old One and the demons exist, death and despair will pursue, and the cycle of pestilence will never, ever stop.
Goes to show, the human heart can be blind.
+GTdba ikr and all those travelers murdered too
I doesn't matter what happened. She meant good and she helped people. As far as I can see, as long as your doing something that benefits a large community of beings. It's better than leaving them to feel sorrow, even when the old one is gone these people still suffer.
@@psycholonya If the Old One is taken out, eventually the Valley will either disappear or become better. It may take decades or centuries, but it will happen. It's only natural. But if the Old One isn't taken out? If Astraea continues to sustain their miserable lives, of which she barely makes better anyways? Then the people of the Valley will suffer _forever._
And honestly, even if that wasn't the case, Astraea doesn't have much of a point. Even the most well-off person in the Valley lives a completely horrid, painful and deformed life. They make the beggars of any other place look like kings. They'd be happier dead. Astraea scarcely hasn't made their situation better even one bit. She has only given them the idea that she has done so, tricking them into worshipping her and giving her souls and barely giving anything in return other than a few kind words and an extension of their suffering.
I hope you'll do a video on the Maiden in Black one day. I'm looking forward to that the most, because I still have no clue who she really was.
+IReiteThat She is one of the OLDEST and MOST FEARED DEMONS. basically the other half of the Old One in my opinion. She has the ability to manipulate souls themselves and she is the only one who can put the Old One to sleep. In a way she seems like the caretaker or nanny of the Old One as the Saint mentions the Old One sounds like a Baby and she has been alive longer than even the Monumentals but does not collect souls for the Old One. Instead she uses her powers to Soothe it and bring it peace. Maybe so that it may mature and grow into a real God that can Think instead of just Feel and Want
@@floggingblogger like the doll to the transformed hunter in bloodborne.
Congrats on such a fantastic video Vaati! One of the most tragic, heartbreaking and though-inducing moments in all the Souls games. Its one of those incredible rare gaming scenarios that throws everything about your quest into doubt. Thanks again for not only reminding us Demon's Souls players of this memorable boss battle, but also for informing the non-PS3 owning Souls fans just how fantastic Demon's Souls still is in the wake of the Dark games.
As always, your narration gave me the shivers... Poor Astraea.
that was a really awesome video, a true story of right and wrong clashing with good and evil. I wish I was able to work with the creators of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Thanks VaatiVidya.
Glad you liked it!
Awesome video and all, but I can't believe you didn't use this boss fight magnificent soundtrack in the whole video!
Might be to avoid copyright, but I'd agree with you. Best track in the game.
I never realized they were wearing plague masks. I though they were bird creatures.
I am so glad to see more Demon's Souls content. So very few ever make any.
i love this game and i love the way hes looks deep into the story and sees are we doing the right thing or is it for nothing like in this video .i hope he will make more of these videos
Oh yeah! It was about time you return to do Demon's Souls stuff again Vaati. :D
Vinland's Helm looks like Velstadt's
Wrong. Velstadt's helm looks like Garl's.
LordSaber True!
I'm little confused right now what are you guys on about?
Dwayne Hicks Demon's Souls was released in 2009 and therefor Garl has been there before Velstadt.
***** I know but what I typed is correct so I'm not sure why people are saying I'm wrong.
"What is the price of the soul?" seems to be a recurring question in my mind when I play any of the Souls games, and yes I had a hard time taking the Demon Soul from her..I had tears in my eyes.
Jester Thomas should be next...you know...why is he in...(SPOILER FOR RUclips READER) Dragon Sanctum? I mean seriously how even.....the same thing goes for Benhart of Jugo.
Lol, Benhart. I don't think you should read too much into their inclusion. It seems that the devs placed Jester there as a joke (given how he uses the "It's me" gesture) and Benhart so that you'd have some DECENT help against Nashandra 2.0. Who would have ever thought that Benhart could do better than anyone else? Another reason is SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS... Carhillion of the Fold replaces Benhart as an NPC summon for the second DLC.
Benhart not only can do, but does do everything that you do. he beats the 4 old ones unassisted, he beats the shit out of mirror k***ht and Velstadt, takes the kings ring and storms aldia. he fights through the dragon shrine and gets the ashen mist heart. then he asks vengarl to help with the throne guardians and kicks Nashandra's ass. and THEN if that wasn't enough he goes through the DLC to aquire the 4 crowns. TL;DR Benhart is a Feeble Cursed One just like you and me.
LordSaber Carhillion of the Fold?....ok now I'm convinced that the devs are purposely screwing around with the lore...that and or Carhillion is Obi-Wan Kenobi and just used the force.
Philip Sibly Well said.
Angel Lebron I don't think they're messing with the lore. Steelheart Ellie is in both locations and they have nothing about her in the lore anywhere. She's some random NPC that likes to fight the toughest bosses in each DLC. I bet she'll be in the 3rd one, and I'm calling it here and now that Rosabeth will be the other NPC you can use in the Crown of the Ivory King. That would make sense because it's going to be a snowy area and she's a pyromancer. But yeah, I don't think there's any actual reason for them to be there lore wise unless you want to say that Benhart is looking for more challenges and Carhillion? I have no idea why he'd want to fight Raime.
Back when I had the chance to play this on my cousin's PS3, I felt very sorry for Astraea and Garl. I don't condone her methods, but she did it to help others. What a poor, lost soul...
This video was great, however. Probably my favourite story in Demon's Souls as well, although Ostrava and Thomas are not far behind. Well done, Vaati!
I must say. The way you present some of this stories, they truly do make me wonder about humanity. I have watched this videos, knowing that the lore is presented in the games but I find that you bring to light things I had never considered. I have played all three games, and am going for bloodborne the moment it comes out. I have read the lore and I have seen the faces of the enemies, but I haven't been able to connect to them without a third party to explain, and perhaps offer their view point on the way it is.
I watch your videos not only because I enjoy them, but also because they offer light in the darkness. Heh, yea cheesy but what can I say. I respect what you do, your words and opinions on the matter make this channel truly enjoyable. I watch them for insight, inspiration and even hope. When I played Demon souls, I found myself often times giving up because I felt like I wasn't strong enough or good enough to beat some areas. At one point, I surrendered completely against fake king Allant. I watched this video roughly 5 days after it came out.
It wasn't like a burst of motivation, or some super enlightened moment. I simply put the disc back in my ps3, and started playing again, wanting to see this story for myself. After the saint died, I actually cried. (I feel like a pansy for admitting it) I suppose it made me wonder, how many people commit horrible crimes daily for survival and we simply punish without a second thought. I dunno, a lot of things went through my head as I played the game and I have to say that your videos open new meanings to some of the lore man. Thank you deeply for doing this. Kept me from going hollow (sorry again cheesy but eh)
My Soulsborne routine > First playthroug: Fuck this level, die beasts! Second playthrough: watch Vaati's lore video. Jesus, I'm a monster!
Alexandre Andrade For killing a demon that's in you way. Well, your morality is your morality
Garl Vinland is still the biggest badass in all the souls games. He is almost beat by Tarkus and Solaire, but He is still the best.
GuardianOwl Biorr would just fall asleep mid fight.
Biorr all the damn way
GuardianOwl I know biorr frecking takes ona dragon for you ...he can even take on the penetrator haahah
I didn't understand the story, I guess that means im just a monster in these games.
I must say that I really enjoyed your interpretation of Astraea's lore. I always thought the valley of defilement was the best area in terms of lore as it really suited the general feel of demon's souls. Although the game made her purpose very unclear in terms of how it presented it by my standards. The only reason I say this is the whole relief vs death cloud spells or the nature of the demon soul vs understanding of the demon souls deal with Yuria and Freke respectively. I liked how you utilised the two very well in terms of her essentially taking life away to give life. Great work as always Vaati \[T]/, I hope you do a few more revisits to Demon's Souls in terms lore in the future.
Beautiful; this must be the best part so far of the Prepare to cry series...
"All the men worship her like she's The Virgin Mary."
Holy crap, is the God from Demon's Souls the God of Christianity? Did I miss this all along?
Or is it the Old One that is the God of Christianity?
It checks out.
@@zappbrannigan4170 Or it's the actual God mentioned in Demon's Souls that is the God of Christianity and the Old One is his version of the Great Flood.
@@Tasorius more like that.
funny that, by leaving the church and becomming a demon, she became closer to her "god" than any other cleric
So do Jesus Christ and The Virgin Mary exist within Demon's Souls? Considering the filthy woman saying the Saint is worshiped like Mary, it seems like it. I don't know alot about Demon's Souls, so are they actually in there?
Oh umbasa who knows
Yeah, was kinda weird to hear a reference to the Virgin Mary. Sloppy dialogue writing?
No that was crappy english localization and translation, in jp the filthy woman just calls her a "false holy virgin" of some sorts, dosnt translate 100%.

Is that from what I think it might be from? O_o
***** yes it is Mirai Nikki that you were referring to
Just finished this part for the first time and man...
I really just rushed through the swamp because of the bad memories of Blight Town and the lack of healing items, so I only had a few pieces of information about what happened here. But when I got into that boss fight I felt that something is not right and that I'm going to do something really bad.
Hearing those dialoges were really hearthbreaking and the music too.
Old one prepare to die.
Wanted this video for a while now. Thanks Vaati
This is why I liked demons souls better than dark souls
Because of what?
Helppo100 I don't mean to answer for Kyle, but Demon's Souls lore probably the best in the series. There is a real weight to the stories and mysteries behind the world of DeS, and I don't believe any other Souls game has gotten it quite as right as DeS did. This is coming from someone that played Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 *long* before even touching DeS too, believe it or not, so nobody better give me that dismissive "you're just nostalgic" argument I always hear on reddit.
That said, what's great about DeS and DaS is that they don't void each other; I could go back to DeS after playing DaS for days and feel as though they're both their own special machines that just happen to share similar gears. DaS2 on the other hand... well, the DLC is pretty good, anyway.
Say what? DeS lore is great, but you can't say dks1 lore isn't as good. Arty, solaire, seigmeyer, and all the first flame stuff. Just my opinion.
I think demons souls have much better underlying themes and duplicities to the story and your actions, this video showcasing my opinion very well. Dark souls lore is interesting but serves more as a reason to kill bosses than to drive its own narrative.
Joshua Campbell
i like dark souls lore better but ok.
You kind of miss the point of the Astraea story imo. As you read after you get her soul, it is hinted that the "most pure" is in fact the "most impure". The irony is, she gave up on humanity and any God she believed in and became a demon, i.e. in her relentless pursuit to help those of the valley of defilement at all costs, she herself becomes the evil one.
Exactly. It may be a Satan comparison. Most holy and pure of angels, fallen to the depths of depravity.
So, would she be compared to as the Archangel Lucifer? An Archangel that was "corrupted" and fell to the clutches of Satan, an princess that saw the flaws in the Church and came to the ideals of a evil to become an Arch-demon.
Those are masks? I always assumed those were just the Impure's noses, given how long their tongues are and how goblinlike the rest of their bodies are. I'll have to take a closer look next time I play.
Also, I always thought Astraea was full of crap about how innocent and pure they all were (as her followers dementedly hunted you down). That's some serious "This land is peaceful, it's inhabitants kind" level of B.S right there.
Fors Clavigera
Indeed, good intentions do not always translate to what is right.
Fors Clavigera Well when you're an aborted baby that grows up into an impoverished adult due to things you cant control, anyone would be bitter to anyone whos "normal". Then a women and her knight come along and show the first act of kindness they've most likely felt for ages. Couple that with the fact that the same people who cast you out are the ones who've come to kill your fair maiden and thats reason of to think that any outsider is a threat that is to be killed.
Fors Clavigera Thank you! Someone who finally understands that the ends do justify the means in this situation. She tried to do the right thing, but it was actually wrong because she became what she fought and abandoned most of humanity.
I just finished this game and what a suprise to see that you just recently released a video about something I was going to research. After beating this boss I knew I had to know more about this story.
This is actually the first "Prepare to Cry" that actually made me tear up a little. Wonderfully done, I don't recall a lot of that dialogue seeing as how by the time I reached that part of the game I was kind of running on auto after dying 20 times to in the area prior I was just ready to be rid of the poison swamp. Had I been listening to her speak I would have probably turned back.
I felt no pity for the women who turned her back on her God. Oh wait....
Bishop Havel Remember the times when you and Gwyn kicked Dragons' ass and were bros? Good times...
Why do so many people write "women" every time they try to write "woman". Is it because they refuse to pronounced the plural form correctly and see no difference between the words...?
@@Tasorius It's the same with "man" and "men". People don't know the difference.
@@thewildhealer541 I don't understand why they don't know something so basic...
The Valley of Shit is definitely my favorite Demon's Souls area.
But I hate that you can't exit the fog wall in Astraea fight. If you could, then you really would have an "option" of not killing her, and all the "Leave us, Slayer of Demons!" would be more significant.
Dr Famine Imo, while that'd be cool, it'd also be ultimately pointless on FROM's part. Though, it'd add to the roleplaying experience.
What I mean by this is, as leaving her does not coincide with your goal, your end goal, no matter what anyone says you /don''t/ have a choice in the matter. The moment she became an Archdemon and you a demon slayer, it would only ever end one way. To put the Old One to rest, all the Archdemons, or rather, every demonic entity must be destroyed.
This is a core theme of irony in the game, as you yourself are the most powerful demon of all, as the Maiden in Black before you, and that is why the Old One can't truly die, because there always must exist atleast one demon to make it to the Old One in the first place.
+Dr Famine I've always gotten a feeling that Priscilla is much like Astrea. They speak of peace and just trying to live their lives but in both instances you are constantly attacked by the so called "Peaceful" inhabitants. It seems they keep they "Saviors" ignorant of the horrors they continually not only adventurers but most likely even eachother.
+floggingblogger continually perpatrate*
It's kind of like Spec Ops in that technically, the only real way to "refuse" is to end your quest entirely, AKA stop playing the game. You don't get to see the aftermath of that and it's a fundamentally unfulfilling option that both ends your immediate fun as well as undercuts the value of the game you spent money on so it's not a perfect solution... Maybe someday we'll be able to accurately approximate that kind of choice in gaming, but not quite yet.
Also: ´´Do the ends justify the means?``
Considering it's either this or the end of the entire world, yeah, I'd say it's pretty justified.
I think the question the game asks is: Is existence worth it? Many in-game characters answer with, 'no'. As the player, you get to answer for everyone else.
@@TheSuperRatt Meh, they can commit seppuku if they want to end things, but for those who want to live and carry on to the bitter end, I'd say it's worth it for those guys
A sad yet beautiful story. For a long time now, I always try to understand the intentions behind every action. The story behind these actions gives you a better understanding on why the action was made... and can change your views on things.
By the way VaatiVidya , sorry for the noob message I sent a little while back.
OMG Vaati this is sacrilege! You didn't use the most iconic music of the series, the Astrea theme, in your prepare to cry video about Astrea! I can't cry without it! To be fair though you used it in the sisters of chaos video, which was one of yer best videos, IMO.
How do you get Vinland to talk? He was silent when I fought him.
You have to be in human form.
Walamonga 1313 DAMN. And I fought him in soul so I didn't ruin my world tendency........
Nick Tucker Always play in human form. There's a lot of interesting stuff that you might miss.
Walamonga 1313 I was going for platinum. :P I can't afford to die and not get pure white.
I will have to do that in my next playthrough however.
LTC cherno You can be human and still get pure white tendency. Just git gud.
Just beat her in the remake and I shed a tear ngl
Whats interesting is that by Astraea's standards what you are doing isn't evil, she also did morally repressible things to achieve her goal. So if you go with that idea then what your doing is fine. But say you take the other view that you shouldn't do evil even if it is for what you consider to be a greater good, well then it seems like you are also not morally reprehensible, since Astraea is evil and therefor you can kill her without being evil.
Also wow this game is so much like Berserk.
Vaati, I've been anticipating this video for a year now. You came through, this was fantastic!
Me and the wife have always loved Astrea and Garland they are the best duo in the series and had the best theme. Fuck Smough and Ornstein..lol
