I can tell that Erika is an excellent Art Teacher. She specifies the kind of materials you need to have at hand before starting your project and then she gives great tips along the way so the painting process is easier.
Erika...I was torn between which watercolor choice to make. You are a fantastic teacher and covered every detail and difference to set us up to make a more informed decision. Thank you so much! watercolor pencils for me!
Hi Dolores! I'm so happy to hear that you found this video helpful! :) Thanks so much for your kind words. They mean the world! I'd love to know how watercolor pencils go for you!
Erika, your demos are wonderful. You give the similarities and differences of both, contrasting both mediums , leaving it up to the viewer to make the choice. Super job.
Hi, Helen. :) I'm so happy you noticed this. Thanks so much for checking this one out. I've been thinking about creating a new-er version of this video. I haven't used my watercolor pencils in a while! Have a fantastic weekend!
I'm a beginner and loved your RUclips! I also want to try the watercolor pencils, especially as I am traveling next month and think they'd be easier to take along. My apple painting turned out flat looking so I'm going to listen to your demo again to bring more life into my work. Thank you!
Hi, Andrea! Hope you're having a lovely day. Thanks so much for watching and taking time to comment. I'm so glad you found some useful nuggets in this watercolor pencil video. I'm currently working on more videos using this medium, so stay tuned! :) ruclips.net/video/0g0QBNxoGTY/видео.html
Hey, there! :) Thanks so much for checking this one out. It's such an old video! haha Happy to hear you found some helpful nuggets. Wish you a lovely day and stay safe!
@Erika Lancaster..oldies but goodies😁 sometimes I like digging old videos..and eurika I found some useful tips...stay safe until this pandemic is over....🙏😇
This is the best comparison between watercolor pencils and watercolor paints that I've found. When you start to add the second layer onward, what method do you use? 1. Swipe the damp brush over the pencil tip to use it as traditional watercolor 2. Lay down the pencil on the paper, then swipe the damp brush over it? I feel like the first method is better because at this stage, the paper is near saturation point and it can only takes so much additional pigment.
Hey, there! Glad you've enjoyed this comparison video. :) It's quite old and my watercolor/watercolor pencil techniques have improved a lot (I believe so anyway!), as well as my tutorials. I have full watercolor pencil tutorials in which I thoroughly explain my process and techniques, which you might enjoy. You'll find this playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PLUhSVLFDaUTIZfyUcE5HWxQh_hhpcVk5y Hope it helps! 😉
Hi, Rena! Thanks so much for checking out my videos. :) This is a super old one! Make sure to check out more recent watercolor pencil videos. 😉 I'm so glad you're here!
Awesome 👍 Can you please tell me, Which is best time to shift painting from sketching? Because sketching skills also requires for painting. Which is easy for beginner, Watercolor vs poster vs acrylic paint? Which Is good for realistic drawing also? Please tell 🙏
Hi! Great questions. Personally, I'd start sketching and then move on to painting! 😁 I consider drawing/sketching to be the foundation for everything else. But if you already started painting, you can start with your drawing practice whenever you'd like! Make sure to stem from the basics (holding a pencil properly for drawing, drawing on a slanted surface and moving your entire arm, etc.), and learn the fundamentals (3D form, perspective, light behavior and value, etc.). You can achieve realism with any type of painting medium. It's mostly a matter of learning specific techniques that help you achieve this, and developing an understanding of the fundamentals to help you with this. I'd consider watercolor to be the most challenging, as there's no way to cover up mistakes due to the medium's translucency, and also the fact that it's so easy to overwork watercolor. Acrylic paint, on the other hand, is more forgiving because you can simply cover up mistakes with a layer of paint. It does depend on the person, though! We all have different strengths and weaknesses. Poster paint can be used the same way as acrylic paint. Both dry relatively fast, as opposed to oil paint. Thanks so much for checking out this video and for your questions! I wish you tons of progress and enjoyment moving forward in your art journey.
OMG the cat! Ha ha, I had to stop because I was laughing too hard. Great tutorial, I need to get some watercolor pencils to see how I enjoy working with them. I liked seeing the same subject side-by-side with the different media, and also seeing your layer by layer technique.
Jazz is my studio assistant and is always hanging around. Though she's, at times, not very helpful. :) haha Thanks so much for watching this one. I'm glad to hear that it was helpful!
Hi, Emma! You absolutely can! Watercolor pencils are an incredibly versatile medium. You can use them with water, without, or combine both types of techniques into one same artwork. 😀Have fun!

This is enormously helpful! Question: if you enter a piece in a show do you have to specify when using watercolor pencil vs just calling it watercolor? Thank you, Erika!
Absolutely, Donni! :) You can combine them to create any desired effects you'd like. I'd just make sure that the previous layer has dried completely before going over it with watercolor pencils. Thanks so much for watching an have a lovely day!
Hello ma'am, please help me about to have water color pencils or water color tube which one is best in artist color? I just bought fiber castle water color tube but am thinking to replace it with staedtler water color pencils please suggests me
Hi, Hetal! Thanks so much for visiting my channel, and for your question. I'm not sure I understand your question, but I'll try my best to answer. In terms of color payoff, both watercolor pencils and watercolor tubes can have amazing results. It depends more on the quality of the pigment and the paper you're using. But if you're asking which medium I would recommend you use, it really depends on whether you're looking to improve your painting abilities, or if you enjoy more of a mixed-media kind of experience, as watercolor pencils are both a drawing and a painting medium in one. Watercolor pencils are very versatile and can be used in a variety of ways (drawing without adding water, combining painting with line work or as a drawing that turns into a painting), whereas watercolor tubes are purely a painting medium. In other words, what skill are you trying to improve most at the moment? Drawing? Mixed-media? or Painting? I feel this is the first question you should ask yourself before coming to any conclusions about what to buy. I love painting more than using colored pencils myself, and have used only a few different brands of watercolor pencils. I hope this helped in some way. Let me know how it goes for you!
Thank you so much for replaying my que. And your time and energy, and yes you got my question very well, Sry for my English..I want to improve my painting so,,which one is good in between two of them?
Is painting with watercolor pencils considered as a watercolor painting?? Can one entre art competitions under watercolor.. With an art piece painted using watercolor pencils?
That's a great question, Pooja! They are considered paintings, at least if you use them at least partly as a painting medium (from what I understand). And it depends on the competition, as they all have different requirements! I think that would be a case-by-case type scenario, as all competitions are different. Thanks so much for watching and have a great day!
