Watched this video and did each task and my car still works! Excellent video. FCPEuro parts showed up a day earlier than scheduled too. Thanks for putting this together. You made it easy. 2008 135 98k E88
Just did this on my 2010 335d & WOW was that a job. I purchased the car knowing that I would have to replace it & thought it wouldn't be that involved. Boy was I wrong. Not hard just very involved with many other parts of the motor. Anyhow it's in & I have put 3500 miles on it & holding like new. So glad I did it myself because giving the valve train an inspection while in their was an added bonus...
Did this the other day. It was first first DIY repair on my car. Done servicing etc but the guide was spot on. Would definitely be much easier second time around too
Thanks for the great DIY. This was the first big DIY I ever did. OMG! It took me a 1-1/2 days then I broke the vent hose and had to wait till the next day for the BMW dealer to open so I could overpay for a replacement lol. But to qualify this, all I ever did before was change a few tail light bulbs, air filters, and wiper blades. Lots of things were stuck, lots of things to figure out when it’s your first big DIY. So this was definitely jumping into the deep end for me. It definitely helps to have a friend help you. There is a lot of stuff going on with trying to get the cover off and back on, making sure wires are clear, etc. I watched this video - and some others - over and over to get an idea of what tools I needed. Then went out and bought the tools. The next thing I did month later was the LUX Angel Eyes upgrade when a bulb went out - I watched Justin Buice’s DY for that. Definitely a learning experience and very glad I did it. Appreciate all I learn on your channel. 2007 BMW 335xi Black Sapphire Metallic. 93K miles. Original owner. Black Apex SM10 8.5 x 18 wheels. I bent 3 VMR V710s in a year. Not buying VMR ever again.
BMW quoted me $1435 to replace just my gasket. Ordered one for $38 and I'm doing it myself this weekend. No way I'm paying that much for something that's less than $40 and takes a few hours
I have a simple n46 engine but watch all your diy's. Because i learn a lot how an bmw engine is build. Love the way you explain everything, keep them comming. Tnx 👌
Just did this diy, excellent video. You can use the E10 socket and a pick tool to pull all the valve cover bolts/sleeves completely out of the cover. Makes it easy to remove the valve cover without needing another person. Only works if you’re replacing the whole cover though.
Awesome DIY. Based on your video I was able to order all tools needed as a preparation. This weekend I was able to do a full gasket and cover replacement. Never did anything like this before but your video gave me enough confidence doing this on my own, thanks so much!!
Thanks for the post. I referenced your video and I was able to get mine done. The Bentley Manual for this car did not mention taking off the fuel rail. That tip made it much easier.
You are awesome. I was nervous about this DIY, but after watching your video (multiple times) I went for it. Please keep making videos! You're a life saver.
@@sergiogonzalez8947 it went really well. I just changed the gasket (not the whole Valve Cover).I also did not remove the vacuum cannisters or boost solenoids. Just take your time. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Mate, great diy! Took a while but your instructions were clear as day. Little things are a different due to rhd and lhd placement differences but nothing major. The only issue was needing to buy an extra deep well socket for the 3 valve cover bolts. A deep one wouldn't latch on. Thanks, you're a legend!
I have an 08 e92 one and I ran into what we thought was the valve cover gasket. I’m just happy to have a warranty to pay for it. But once that ends. I’ll be right back here 😭😭😭. Awesome video man!!!
Thanks alot for this and the Injector DIY. I used this video two weeks ago to do the Valve Cover + Gasket, and the Injector video last July. Keep up the great work and look forward to your next videos on n55 and up motors.
I didn't have a long enough socket for the valve cover studs in the center. I drilled the center of my 10mm deep well with a 5/16 drill bit. It worked. Couldn't put the extension into the socket fully, but it went in far enough to use the extension.
I gotta try this. This is extremely!!!! Detailed and simplistic per your instructions. Other videos they want to get all detailed and obnoxiously dramatically. Thanks and by the way. I been subscribed! If you ever need a free beat let me know I want to give back for giving backing to millions on Elite tech advice!
Again, thanks for your video. Mine is a 2011 335ix coupe showing early signs of oil leaks. So yeah just got my oil changed. Week and a half later low oil about 1/2 a quart. So I started to look for leaks oilpan, valve cover, and the filter area. Good video!
LOVE the full step by step view of what to do on this DIY video. The motion on the video in full screen (head mounted GoPro?) was a little much for me. Still, walkthrough, talk-through was extremely useful and was exactly what I need to get this job done (planned on my E90 N54 w/120K mi as well). And love working w FCPEuro.com for maintenance parts. They're cool too.
Steve Weltman they’re slowing coming in and being updated in the description. It was a mix of tripod, head mount GoPro and then switched back to a tripod 👌🏻
Great video!!! I just did mine on my 06 N52. So much to move out of the way. Thanks for all details. Will be helpful when I graduate to an N54 someday. 👍🏾
Great explanation of all the necessary steps. Love it! I've done oil filter housing already, now it's time for valve cover and oil pan. Having 335xi, oil pan is gonna be pain in the ass though... :(
getting the right socket for these earth studs was kind of a pain for me, I actually got it from bmw dealer... I think it would be nice for some if you would put link to that in the description, thank you for the video!
Just wanted to say thanks for this had a slight leak dripping down on cat since I bought it at 90K but now that I've been working remote with covid the extra oil was becoming a mess. BMW mechanic said not to replace the cover if it was ok (130k now) so I didn't but I'm sure if I still have it when it's time to do again I certainly will.
Great video; however, there's another gasket you don't talk about... the inner oil filler cap gasket. Of course, I have a 2000 528i and this could be different on this vehicle, but I was directed to this video which doesn't cover how it is placed (I remembered if fell out when I took my valve cover off, but I didn't replace it and have a continuous check engine light even after smoking the engine to find leaks.
Hi, im currently doing this on my 335i, and i was wondering if you could give a little more detail on the order the screws have to be torqued back inside after changing the valve cover. i unfortunately didnt quite get the exact order from the video. thanks a lot
I''m looking at getting the tools I need for this job and the link to the digital torque wrenches shows that thee wrenches have a range of 30-340NM yet most torque specs listed for this job are less than 30NM? I've never used a torque wrench before so I just want to confirm that they can be set to the required settings? Even the 3/8 Drive doesn't go that low.
Anyone looking at purchasing tools for this job beware that the torque wrench linked in the description does NOT go low enough for the valve cover bolts. I contacted Gearwrench directly to confirm. The video shows his set to 8.5NM but I can't find a 3/8" or 1/2" wrench that goes that low.
Hi Lee, I really enjoyed watching your video, very descriptive, easy to follow. I have a 2009 335i x drive. I have all kinds of leaks and trying to fix it my self. Dealer is asking lot of money for it. I have leaks from the Oil filter gasket and cooler gasket, also leak from the engine head coolant hose. Would you recommend fixing those before I change the valve cover gasket? Do you have DYI video on how to change oil filter gasket and cooler gasket? I greatly appreciate your response. I am trying to save some money. Thank you.
Head coolant hose will break suddenly leaving you stranded... The end in the head is plastic (like everything BMW) and it crumbles (ask me how I know). As this is the point where coolant is at its highest temp, it is the most fragile coolant connection. You can buy an aluminum hose barb for $20 from FCPEuro or eBay and replace the plastic piece. (be forewarned if it's crumbling, chunks of plastic are already in your waterpump and/or thermostat--another expensive repair.) replacing the barb will prevent future fuckery though. www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-aluminum-coolant-hose-flange-rein-chc0609?ads_cmpid=1586640911&ads_adid=59893888775&ads_matchtype=&ads_network=g&ads_creative=298302526031&ads_targetid=pla-317976287412&ttv=2&gclid=CjwKCAjw5vz2BRAtEiwAbcVILwTyuDoACo0a2fDEwo1wRmwUz0D1AbbAgdhbWi7xmvnCa1DAt1lgEhoCzMYQAvD_BwE Also, oil leaks (which can be ereywhar on BMW) especially oil filter housing gasket and oil cooler gasket, can leak oil onto serpentine belt, causing it to slip, which causes it to shred, which may then whip into front mail seal, possibly destroying the engine. There is a front main seal guard you can buy to prevent the damage, but not the leaking onto the belt (I may devise such). These are great cars that didn't finish R&D. Bean counters have destroyed sporty car longevity through plastic parts, snap fit time saving construction , and smaller parts that are only sold as part of a much more expensive, larger assembly. If BMW used metal in the cooling system (they do on some engines omg), cared slightly less about beating competition on purchase price, and designed for enthusiasts (no special tools, smaller parts available, etc.) with efficient repairability and common sense engineering-- literally everyone would buy and drive the ultimate driving machine. Sales would go up, folx would be happier, spend less on service, and promote the brand to every friend. Japanese common sense and pride in proper craftsmanship are several levels higher, alas they have no autobahn and a younger culture of motoring etc., so the driving experience isn't quite the same. The collaboration between Toyota and BMW is a step in the right direction, but didn't quite get us there. Germans need to stop making electronics, they suck at it, whereas Japanese electronics have always been top notch. If they focused on design, driving dynamics, and concept and left parts execution, quality control, and manufacturing to Japanese, Elon would go broke, 😂
Nicely done! Keep them DIY vids coming! Can't wait to do mine, just hope my oil pan gasket isn't leaking as well(another common n54 issue) because I heard that oil pan gasket replacement requires dropping the subframe & it's labor intense...like 8-10 hrs, yikes! I guess for that, we have stealerships... make them work hard for once! lol
After watching this I now realize I prolly need to take my n55 to a mechanic. This is a bit much. Coils and Plugs were easy enough. This on the other hand is a headache. Why did you stop running the cowl deletes?
I’m having this same problem burning smoke through vents I have 07 bmw x5 would this be same problem because I was also told that it’s can be heater core leak ??
Hey chief, at the 10minute mark you took the ground off the side. Would you kindly let me know what exactly was happening there. I'm not quite sure what that is although I have an idea. Would appreciate a bit of clarity. My thinking is it has to do something with the battery but I'm also not sure how come that could be helpful if the battery wasn't previously disconnected at the beginning of the video. Appreciate the service btw. Have a great one
Can you do this to my 2013 x5 please? I can always take things apart but never back together. I’ll even drive it to you Figured I’d thro a Hail Mary since I’m low on funds at the moment ❤
I'm still watching the video. I'm at 23minutes; pretty much exactly at that mark where the valve cover is off. I was wondering... would it be a bad/awful idea to clean the inside of the valve cover with rubbing alcohol also. Feels like a terrible question. I plan to do an oil change right before I attempt to start the vehicle.
Great video bro. Love the fact you named each tool in the bottom left corner. I will have to watch the video over a few times before I will work on my e92. Speaking of my e92, are the steps about the same as yours?
BMW Fanatic, Thanks again for the video. I can’t wait until I work on mine. You’re awesome! Also if you’re ever in Dallas again I would love to show you my e92.
I’ve gotten everything taken off and loosened but it’s still stuck on pretty tight. I’m sure it’s just the e10 threads falling back in. Should I just remove all the e10 or get my second hand and give it a little more muscle?
I've got one a freind wants me to do and I was wondering how much time do you think this job takes. I have done one about 4 years ago but can't really remember how long it took. BMW wants enough money that they must rate it at 12 hours or more.
Hey thanks so much for this awesome video. I have an 08 e93 and needs valve cover, and crank sensors as well. Will this be similar or should I just pay the $995 labor that I was quoted. I know I can do this but am scared to mess it up and wreck it if I'm wrong. What do you think? God Bless Mark
Great Video! Gonna replace the valve cover gasket on my 335is in the next week or so. Want to replace plugs as well. Ay suggestion regarding when I should replace the plugs during this process?
Just did my 335xi this week. Broke one steel bolt off in the aluminum head. So had it towed to and from the repair shop to get it out ($$). ☹️Thanks BMW for your design flaw on a bolt that only gets 6.2 pounds of torque. 🙄
With 150k miles and the original valve cover, when did/do you replace your timing chain? I am at 120k miles and need to do my valve cover gasket, oil filter/cooler gasket, belt, and pulleys. Wondering if I am good on timing though.
I'm going to be doing this job next weekend. Also, a bit off topic, but how hard is it exactly, to do a transmission fluid and filter change. Shop quoted me 1800 dollars. I about fainted. I figured it would be expensive, but damn. My car now has 141,000 miles, and I have no idea if the transmission fluid has been changed at all. I am assuming it hasn't. I bought the vehicle at 129,000.
watched this vid quite a few times and I'm about to.install.my new cover as well, however I have a question. on my old cover I installed an upgraded PCV valve which is now a year old. should I remove the one supplied with the cover and install my upgraded?
Had mine done under warranty at 60k due to misfires but at 131k now. Pretty good oil leak now underneath. Looks like an oil trail starting at coil number 4 going back. Is that what you saw or had as well?
Hi I just did this diy on a 07 335i convertible and went to start it but it won’t . It cranks but doesn’t come to life. Is there another way to pressurize the fuel system?
Great diy, dealership told me that my vcg was lightly sweating oil about two years ago, but wasn't enough for me to justify the repair. Now I finally saw a drop of oil on the driveway, so need to replace it.Question : the torque wrench on amazon as per your link is for 30-340 nm, how we're you able to set it to 8,5nm? I'm having a hard time finding a torque wrench with such a light torque spec. Thanks!
This is awesome, thanks for all the diy’s. I am about to do this myself as well but I have an E92. I was told by a local mechanic the motor needed to be tilted to be able to get the valve cover out?? Is there something different between the E90/92 or they most likely were trying to scare me into letting them perform this task... Thanks in advance
Hey man so I just did this DIY. Bad part is I didn't do the on and off again at the end. My cars service engine soon, check engine for limp mode i guess is on as well. What should I do
just took my 2007 335i with 113k on it to my mechanic because of oil drops underneath. mechanic said it was leaking from the front and rear crank seals not because the seals were bad but because the pvc valve which is part of the valve cover was bad and causing pressure build up in the engine causing oil to leak from the seals. have you heard of that issue? (already had the valve cover gasket replaced at 90k,the oil filter housing gasket and cooling housing gasket replaced at 108k all for oil leaks) wish I would have seen this video years ago because I would have had the valve cover replaced with the gasket at 90k. :-(

Finally again a video that's useful. Good job. BTW, your garage needs to be cleaned up badly :)
Dutch79 Not my garage 😀
At the in laws until my new house is built!
Great video man, thanks
Appreciate your effort
You mention a swivel is needed for the far back corner valve cover bolt, but I don't see it listed with parts. Do you remember what that was?
holy shit your enginebay is clean!
Great DIY, I have a 535i 2008, can I do this as my first DIY? As it costs too much to get it replaced by a mechanic? Any tips?? Thank you
Great video!! Did you decide to go back to your stock cowl rather than the BMS cowl filters?
Flag Rate is 6.7 hours, thanks for the awesome DIY. How long did it take without editing?
Hey, where did you find the flat rate information?
How much this work would cost . Can you do on mine?
I’m having this same problem burning smoke through vents I have 07 bmw x5 would this be same problem because I was also told that it’s can be heater core leak ??
Hey chief, at the 10minute mark you took the ground off the side. Would you kindly let me know what exactly was happening there. I'm not quite sure what that is although I have an idea. Would appreciate a bit of clarity. My thinking is it has to do something with the battery but I'm also not sure how come that could be helpful if the battery wasn't previously disconnected at the beginning of the video. Appreciate the service btw. Have a great one
Great work!!!
Can you do this to my 2013 x5 please? I can always take things apart but never back together.
I’ll even drive it to you
Figured I’d thro a Hail Mary since I’m low on funds at the moment ❤
I'm still watching the video. I'm at 23minutes; pretty much exactly at that mark where the valve cover is off. I was wondering... would it be a bad/awful idea to clean the inside of the valve cover with rubbing alcohol also. Feels like a terrible question. I plan to do an oil change right before I attempt to start the vehicle.
Is the set up the same as the 328i and Will this work on the 328i engine?
Great video bro. Love the fact you named each tool in the bottom left corner. I will have to watch the video over a few times before I will work on my e92. Speaking of my e92, are the steps about the same as yours?
Juan Moreno Yep!
BMW Fanatic, Thanks again for the video. I can’t wait until I work on mine. You’re awesome! Also if you’re ever in Dallas again I would love to show you my e92.
Does this apply to a 328i because I have the same problem
I’ve gotten everything taken off and loosened but it’s still stuck on pretty tight. I’m sure it’s just the e10 threads falling back in. Should I just remove all the e10 or get my second hand and give it a little more muscle?
so do you need a new valve cover as well
I've got one a freind wants me to do and I was wondering how much time do you think this job takes.
God Bless
Mark
Stop acting like a woman.
Believe in yourself .
I got E90 330d with M57N2 engine so this video wasn`t kinda my thing but it`s great so I watched it anyway. Thumbs up!
Thanks for watching!!!
Sure man;) I mostly watch M57 related videos but you can always find something useful watching videos about other models as well
you are missing one 5 sir
Hey i ordered the Torque Wrench you set the link to when it came in the Torque specs start at 30lb,
I did the VCG on my E92 yesterday, those self starting bolts were the worst part of the DIY.
Do you have to buy replacment bolts when replacing valve cover and VCG ?
Would a 09 535i be about the same? Just ordered my valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets.
Great Video! Gonna replace the valve cover gasket on my 335is in the next week or so. Want to replace plugs as well. Ay suggestion regarding when I should replace the plugs during this process?
Yeah you can since everything is all out of the way 😀
Just did my 335xi this week. Broke one steel bolt off in the aluminum head. So had it towed to and from the repair shop to get it out ($$). ☹️Thanks BMW for your design flaw on a bolt that only gets 6.2 pounds of torque. 🙄
Any huge differences you know of between the N54 and E84?
Did you have problem with oil going into fuel injectors
O lord I can't believe I bought one of these nightmares
It’s not bad 😀
What long deep 10 mm socket did ya use? I can’t get one to fit
watched this vid quite a few times and I'm about to.install.my new cover as well, however I have a question. on my old cover I installed an upgraded PCV valve which is now a year old. should I remove the one supplied with the cover and install my upgraded?
Hey Longin, did you end up switching your upgraded pcv valve to the new cover?
I did not, figured since pcv was new, there was no point. Now I have an upgraded spare.
@@V1ZFN cool, thanks!
Had mine done under warranty at 60k due to misfires but at 131k now. Pretty good oil leak now underneath. Looks like an oil trail starting at coil number 4 going back. Is that what you saw or had as well?
Awesome Job Lee. Thank you. I'm thinking that this is also a good time to get to all the vacuum lines on the turbos?
Craig Neale sure is
Hi I just did this diy on a 07 335i convertible and went to start it but it won’t . It cranks but doesn’t come to life. Is there another way to pressurize the fuel system?
Let me know if I have not pulled my BMW X1 frm, then whether the car will be ignited
Thanks!
peterjg001 they must have changed it..Mines an older model of that one apparently
Thanks in advance
fastrak5150 they are scaring you. You dont have to lift the motor. Did this on my e92 with no issues
boomy818 figured so. I got it out fine, they also said they pcv couldn't be replaced....
fastrak5150 it can be replaced i took mines out
Hey man so I just did this DIY. Bad part is I didn't do the on and off again at the end. My cars service engine soon, check engine for limp mode i guess is on as well. What should I do
Is this a similar process for the n55. Smoke seems to be coming through my vent on my F15
Yeah it’s similar, N55 is a little different but not far off
just took my 2007 335i with 113k on it to my mechanic because of oil drops underneath. mechanic said it was leaking from the front and rear crank seals not because the seals were bad but because the pvc valve which is part of the valve cover was bad and causing pressure build up in the engine causing oil to leak from the seals. have you heard of that issue? (already had the valve cover gasket replaced at 90k,the oil filter housing gasket and cooling housing gasket replaced at 108k all for oil leaks) wish I would have seen this video years ago because I would have had the valve cover replaced with the gasket at 90k. :-(
Need to do this mine is starting to leak.
Hi one question do you put gascket glue on the valve gascket or just tighten with the tork wrench thx I have the code for my 335i 2008 is p0171 bank 1
How do you know if the valve cover hasnt been replaced recently I forgot to ask if it was ever replaced
