Rediscovered Abandoned Gold & Osmiridium mine in Tasmania's remote Savage River!!

  • Hidden away deep in a valleys of the Savage river of Tasmania lies an abandoned gold and osmiridium mining village. At the turn of the twentieth century Osmiridium became eight times the value of gold and many miners from around the world quickly hit the bends of the Savage river to seek there fortune.
Miners such as Portuguese John Baptiste (Hookey Jack) renowned for his hook as a right hand, his exceptional ability to prospect and sluice gold and James Mcginty who found Tasmania's largest gold nugget spent twenty years of his life mining gold and 'ossie' around savage river and the 19 mile creek workings.
In December of 1913 a miner by the name of William Armstrong slipped from a 60 foot cliff along the track his body was later discovered in the river and shortly after buried on a corner of the river known as Tarvise's beach. A few years later a diversion tunnel was dug out through the hill known as the burnt spur, to divert the rivers flow to allow mining of the rivers bedrock beneath.
My goal for this trip is to see if I can find this lonely abandoned grave of William Armstrong, as well as see what is left of the old workings and diversion tunnel and bring back to life the history of our early pioneers.

    Hey Levi
Your video creation skills have improved dramatically since you started your channel. Your film choreography, editing, dialogue etc. all are first rate. It is a shame that the local forest authorities cant see the value you provide sharing the beauty of back county Tasmania with your 100K+ subscribers. Many of us will never have the opportunity to visit Tasmania and seeing it through your eyes is a true blessing. Keep doing what you love mate and don't let the authorities beat you down.

Hello bro, that expedition you did trying to locate that important history of mining that laid the foundations of what Tasmania is today is impressive. 110 years ago and you were able to find part of the cave and remains of the camps, it's a shame that you couldn't find Mr. William's tomb. It was also all very interesting, thank you very much for sharing that with your followers, we greatly appreciate all the effort.

I remember too. I remember the bush, the love of adventure, the historical stories, but I got so immersed in the 9 to 5 = then I got fat and eventually my feet and hands have been ravaged by neuropathy and my insides taken over by Cancer, so now I watch all your videos to remember what I can never experience again. Plus I also agree that in locking up entry to all those historical areas, our future generations will never know or see what the amazing miners endured in the past. Keep doing what you are doing mate.

I really enjoyed this one. It's sad that governments and businesses seem to think that by controlling historic sites is preserving them. I think that allows them to degrade faster because mother nature has an easier time reclaiming these areas. Without humans helping hands on, the jungle will take over. So sad to loose this. Thanks again.

Visited Tassie for 6 weeks this month. Travelled back roads only and did NOT visit any National Parks in support of your's and Rob's cause. We stayed 6 nights at Luina near the lovely Madeline Creek which runs into the Whyte River. We were in awe of the impenetrable forest. Impossible to use a detector. I did do some sniping without success of finding gold but definitely could see tiny flecks of either tin/osmiridian. We wernt game to bush bash to find detectable ground. Just too thick. Deep gullies. Scary. We have learnt so much about Tassie history watching your's and Rob's videos. You are both ambassadors. NPWS cant seem to see the benefit. Have a great Xmas with your beautiful family🌲 Best wishes for 2024.
