Merry Christmas brother! Haven't heard this in moons. One of my eyes might have leaked a little. I think we can keep it on the downlow. Keep'em coming.
The best example of Alice In Chains live isn’t even this acoustic set ( which is awesome ) it’s their show Live at the Moore all songs from this show are Layne and the band at their hungriest and peak definitely worth a look
One thing that never ceases to amaze me about most of the grunge artists, is the lyrics . Sometimes deep, sometimes personal, sometimes emotional. The fact of the matter is if you just look at the lyrics, you can see how fans of the genre can relate, maybe not the fans themselves have dealt with the feelings they sing about, but maybe had friends or family members or loved ones who dealt with those emotions. Maybe that's why after over 30 years, a song like this can come on, and still attract a new generation of fans.
“Love, Hate, Love,” live recorded in Seattle, AIC’s hometown, shows the depth and range Layne had. It’s in black and white which seems to amplify the emotion Layne’s adding to the song.
Layne had such a powerful and unique voice. With how sick he was here he still gave an exceptional performance, looks like a walking dead man. It’s a shame he wouldn’t reach out for help
Layne was a shadow of himself by this time. His voice is still beautiful here but its different than it was earlier in his career. There is a real sad darkness in his voice here where earlier his voice was pure power and belting notes. I loved Layne since i was a kid in the 90s. I actually named my son after him.
This was 6 years before he passed, but he was pretty much a recluse after this (and before). Terribly sad. So much talent...and the combo of he (Layne Staley) and Jerry Cantrell (guitar/vocals/writing) was magic. 😢
My first thought was, this was 1996, the year I graduated. Shoot. But then I adjust to Layne’s singing. His voice was most definitely unique. Whether someone liked it or not, it was truly distinctive. Unfortunately by this performance he was very decimated by his heroin addiction. Far too skinny, and dealing with tooth loss as well as abscesses. Quite grim but he was just in a dark place. And did not climb out in the end… But music has been my salvation in many ways. It’s surely given me the best therapy I could ask for. And has helped me navigate the life I lead.
A huge fan of AIC is Dallas Green who performs as City and Colour (get it?). He has performed with the remaining band members a time of two. He has a different voice than Layne, but also great. There are two clean solo acoustic performances he has done out there: Nutshell and Rain When I Die. Also worth a looksee. Rain When I Die was from a larger project with Museum of Pop Culture with a number of artists paying tribute to AIC, to varying degrees of success.
Not Alice In Chains, but Laines other band Mad Season “River of Deceit” It had quite the roster of grunge misfits, including Mike McCready, but I’ve always really liked that song
Layne Staley was stolen from us by heroin. His voice is absolutely amazing. Some consider AIC "Grunge" but they despised being labeled into that genre. Layne brought his pain into the performance. His voice was soaked in it. It is said that the performance of this show was his acknowledgement that the addiction was going to take his life. He had tried to perform clean but he couldn't and didn't. The band had tried to shield him but couldn't. All they could do was give the best performance they had in them to give.
This is a difficult performance to watch because he definitely is not his best here. His decline is obvious and he still sounds amazing, haunting, even but it’s hard to watch.
Hey Steve, Ned again. I don't know a lot of their material, but have a ton of respect for their songwriting, abilities and truth telling. From what I've heard about Layne Staley was that he was on and off of heroin but after his girlfriend died he fully embraced his dependence on the drug. Like, refused rehab and gave into being an addict that he wanted to die. All the while knowing how much people valued him and tried to save him.

This was one of Layne's last performances. Which makes it so much more sad!!!😢

Written on the guitar was “friends don’t let friends get haircuts”. That was for Metallica who was in the audience
Actually, if you look at it, it said "Friends don't let friends get friends haircuts" lol

It sounds like this song was about Layne Staley's battle with heroin addiction.

Layne Stayle, died from overdose
He weighed like 80 pounds at the time. It’s a sad way to go
So tragic!! 😞

Layne died far too soon. Such a loss.
Absolutely! 😞
Read up on how he died. It was a terribly sad end. Just an awful end.
