Propane generators are useless in cold weather. I’ve had several and they don’t like to start when it’s cold. The only good thing about dual fuel generators is that they can take gasoline.
First off- Owen Wilson The added features and quiet operation of the enclosed model is nice, but I literally bought 2 of these open frame generators from Tractor Supply for basically the same price as the enclosed. Although they are not as quiet as the closed frame models, they are noticeably quieter than conventional non-inverter open frames.
First off… correct!!! 😀👍🏼 Second, exactly you can buy two for the price of one, have a ton of power and simplicity and yes quieter then the older non inverter “construction “ type gens.
Not necessarily that much quieter than conventional non-inverter. Only when they're running slower which is a partial load. At full load is the same thing. The generator just spins it creates no noise, the inverter is just an electrical device it creates no noise.... You're only noise comes from the engine and if the engine is the same the noise is going to be the same. The industry has different standards for measuring inverter and non inverter generators when you see the numbers. Typically inverter generators are measured at 25% load at 23 ft... The inverter can run at lower RPM and parcel loads so it may be quieter at 50% load than a non-inter still but when you get it to 100%, they're both going to be the same. Further if you take that sound meter and measure up close some of them are amazingly loud to be right next to them, almost 100 The larger the engines get the more noise there is that is an insurmountable problem. Most of the noise is engine noise, not exhaust if it's well muffled. Do they there is a trend of some inverters to run smaller engines at higher RPM to reduce size and weight. All Honda engines were designed to run 3600 RPM max, and so the clones that they're derived from The Hondas are basically the same way. But some of these inverters from China today are running smaller engines at 4,000 to 5,000 RPM to lighten the weight. They will be less durable generators for sure. Now, buying the quietest you can get is worth it. Because all these things are annoyingly loud and both to yourself and your neighbors. Even if you're going to do some sound mitigation yourself at home the lower noise you can start with the lower your final result will be. It is definitely worth a few hundred extra dollars. Btw... The need for an inverter is highly overrated most synchronous generators with AVR automatic voltage regulation are fine for electronics.... That is marketing marketing marketing that people are led to believe. They're big advantage comes that they run at lower RPM at partial load and are quieter at partial loads
I agree most the noise you here is engine noise. Intake noise, crank and cylinder head ticking and clicking and then finally exhaust. Intake sometimes can be very noisy. But a lot of electronics today are becoming more sensitive and need the same type of power coming out of a standard home. Minimal distortion and a clean sine wave. The regular construction generators as we seem to call them, some have a pretty dirty output. Fine for tools and such but some items may not charge or run on a dirty input to protect it self.

My open frame Champion Weekender 4450/3550 runs super quite. It has a car style muffler with a heat shield. Mine came with 6 inch wheels, welded front crossbar with thick rubber isolating pads and a fold up pull handle.

I bought this exact open frame yesterday with wheel kit yesterday. I sure hope it s a good unit , I know a bit loud but other then Honda they are all a bit loud .
Enclosed with remote start for a multi purpose generator or RV generator. Open frame with bigger gas tank and lower price if it’s for backup during power outages and/or is used in an area that has a high risk of theft.
Tool-Time Tom's sidekick (don't remember his name)? Nice review. On a recent sale with promo cards, I bought the PowerHorse open-frame similar to this Champion you test here. It has an L14-30 240V receptacle instead of the 120V RV receptacle. Also has a dedicated small, forced-air cooling fan for the electronics unit. Like the Champion here, it has all the fittings and lugs, etc, already on the frame to accept a wheel kit. A couple of locking casters for the front, some pipe with homemade brackets for the handles with rubber bicycle handgrips, some steel round rod stock, and some cotter pins for the axle, along with 2 "replacement for Radio Flyer red wagon" wheels makes for a dandy homebuilt wheel kit for these open frame inverters. It's quite practical to have around the house for the south Florida power outages. Cheers!
Nice comparison, chances are the neighbors have not purchased the nice quiet enclosed units so I am not sure in an emergency backup situation the extra noise will matter. For camping or such the enclosed make sense but at a lower wattage.
Agree when there is nothing else to get and you need a generator well the cheaper one is always appealing. But yea camping you kinda want to keep noise to a lower level if possible. I don’t like to attract attention lol

I would choose the enclosed 4650 the remote / electric start and the wheels are a huge plus. It will still be quieter. Plus it looks a little nicer. If the pull starter broke on the open you have no way to start it ..the enclosed you still have electric start. 2 ways to start it always better.
Another nice comparison video. I've always noticed WEN sells a 3500 running watt open frame inverter for $393 right on their website, it's probably one of the best values as far as power to price is concerned. Have always been curious as to what the sound difference was with these open frames, this video answers my question. I'll stick with the more expensive closed frames for sure!
I was hoping the open was gonna be a little quieter. But it’s hard because not all noise is at the exhaust. You have intake noise, crank noise, cylinder and more. I’ll be staying enclosed for sure

Definitely closed frame for us. The open frame is so loud that it made focusing on work difficult. Closed frame purrs in comparison. Shop around. With quite a bit of effort, we got the close frame dual fuel version for $650. (4500 watt champion)
@@catfishwhisper5970 I've not shopped for a while so I don't know what dealrs are out there. When it got it, I think the avg price was $999 or something. But there were vendors that had price fluctuations including Walmart and ESPECIALLY Amazon. I don't remember all the details now but I was including Rakuten rebates (I think that was up to 10%?) and the vendor made an error with my order and so credited me some, and then there was credit card rebate. After all in, it was $650 which was a killer steal. Bur during that period, I could get the same all day long a bit north of $800. I think the market was flush with those units at that time. We've gone through quite a few power outages and it has been absolutely rock steady and we get about 12 hours per small tank of propane for our home with 2 full size refrigerators and running various computers. Though sipping with other appliances and cooking using electricity as minimally as we can. Well worth it.
On all closed generators, when string breaks, you wish you had an open frame. Trust it's not if, but when it breaks the open frame, take 5 minutes to replace string
You should do a video on the least expensive inverter generator. The sportsman 2000. Maybe also paralleling two of them with the Westinghouse parallel kit…

Have you tested a Predator 8750 inverter open frame yet? Maybe verses another close to it's capabilities? I'm really on the fence about buying the Predator 8750 or the Predator 9000. The application would be for whole/mostly house back up power.

One thing to remember is fuel capacity. The open frame remote start is a 2.3 gallon tank. The open frame manual start is a 4 gallon tank. Big difference.
That open frame inverter gen should be quiter than a none inverter open frame.. my old craftsman was ridiculously loud had to modify the exhaust and put a scooter muffler on it which made a significant difference..
Yea the older ones were definitely loud. But even the new quite tech isn’t going to get rid of a lot of engine and intake noise. Quieter then the old ones but still nothing like a enclosed gen.
@@johnnysweekends true.. so true.. the enclosed ones are a dream compared to the old open frames.. the old craftsman i had u could hear the exhaust popping away from down the street.. i got a Champion 4650 now just for back up power and it would be hard going back to an open frame after this..
It's only more quiet when it's running lower than max output. An open frame inverter generator will be the same loudness as a non inverter generator at 90%-100% load, which most people run them at 50-70%, so It definitely is quieter most of the time.
Would you happen to know if I can run my mytee 8070 extractor on the open frame generator? For car detailing. Just tryna see if it’d hold up with the power.. first time getting a generator so don’t know much
It says your amp draw is 19 amps of the available 30 amps. So it should run it no problem unless it has really high start up amps but I wouldn’t think it could be that high.
@@johnnysweekends thanks for the advice! I think it should would but only one way to find out is if I try it! Cant wait for the generator to come in lol thanks for this helpful video!!!
If you can run it off of a normal 120v outlet you can easily run it from this generator. This has almost double the power output a normal household outlet does.
Well I can tell you right now a generator would be costly running a normal house for everyday use. If you setup a tiny house using solar, batteries and a generator and a mini split for heater and cooling or mini wood stove then you could probably do it if it was super insulated. Normal house on a generator you would go broke. Would be a combination of solar and batteries and even wind to try to stay ahead and the up front cost is a pretty Penny.
Free fuel is always nice but would have to be a lot. It’s high power items like heater or cooling units that suck a lot of power. Microwaves or water heaters depending on type you have. Lights and stuff are nothing.
@electriccuts you're getting about 6-7kwh of energy per gallon of gas in these generators. Maybe 8kw if you're running it close to 100%(closer to full load the better efficiency) so a gallon of gas is about $3.45 right now where I live. Divide that out and it comes to $0.49/kwh compare that to my rate for power from the grid @ $0.068 which is 7.2x more expensive to run the generator. Now I admit my electricity rate is super cheap and less than HALF the cost of the national average of $0.166. So running gas is still 2.95x more expensive vs the national average. It's never going to be worth it. Just use it for back up power. Funny enough Germanys power is so expensive that they are paying $1.00 per kwh (because of the war) so even running my generator it's less than half of what they pay. No thanks. 👎
What's the real purpose of remote start? Shouldn't you power down your equipment prior to shut down, and you shouldn't you either unplug the generator or open a breaker prior to start up? It seems harmful to allow the generator to just come up to speed as circuits are closed and power is being delivered.
Remote start has a lot of purposes. But yes you still wanna power down like you should. A lot of Rvers like it. I have done the same. I can press the button it will fire up with no load. Let it run for about a minute or so and crank up ac or microwave or what ever you need. Leaving your generator plug from your Rv is fine. I also leave my converter off so the Gen doesn’t charge the batteries. So the Gen is never on a load at start up.
Even home but you just have to pay attention more to how you use it. Also popular for off grid cabins. But I bet a lot turn it off and on with a load 😂
Remote is for being able to start the generator from inside the RV. Yes you want to power the generator with nothing plugged its not about actually have a plug connected, it's about having a load running. So before you remote start your generator just flip the main breaker in your rv off and the back on once the gen is warmed up.
What do you think? Which would you buy? The open frame is half the cost and may suit your needs just fine. Or is the quiet tones of the enclosed worth the extra? Let me know. Be sure to read description for prize giveaway info..👍🏼😀

Definitely closed frame for us. The open frame is so loud that it made focusing on work difficult. Closed frame purrs in comparison. Shop around. With quite a bit of effort, we got the close frame dual fuel version for $650. (4500 watt champion)
That’s a great deal. The 4509/4650 are the same just more starting watts 👍🏼
Where can I find the 4500 w champion for 650
@@catfishwhisper5970 I've not shopped for a while so I don't know what dealrs are out there.
This is the same but with remote start

On all closed generators, when string breaks, you wish you had an open frame. Trust it's not if, but when it breaks the open frame, take 5 minutes to replace string
If you don’t need quiet then open frame is the way to go. Easier maintenance and normally a lot cheaper… like a lot lol
Great review on both. I would take the enclosed generator and Owen Wilson is the actor!
😂😂👍🏼 nice!!
I would take the enclosed as well but can’t argue with the simplicity of the other.
I agree.
What is the run time for each generator under load? And what size tank?
You should do a video on the least expensive inverter generator. The sportsman 2000. Maybe also paralleling two of them with the Westinghouse parallel kit…
I did do one with at the time the Aipower unit which I think the sportsman is using the same 80cc Yamaha engine they all use. I’m sure results would be very close.
Owen Wilson. Lol Closed frame for camping to keep the peace. Remote start and wheels for the win!
I agree….
And yes!!👍🏼😀
Definitely Owen. I know champion is a good brand and I would like either one to win. I do like the smaller closed one with wheels. Love your videos and they are simple and in layman’s terms. Wish me luck. I’m already a subscriber
Love it … thanks for the comment and thanks again for subscribing..😀👍🏼
Good luck..😀
I am on the fence between both of these, hahaha. I have a quick question. Do you have to ground these units? Thanks
Another great video! Owen Wilson BTW.
Thank you..😀👍🏼
😉
Dammit I had having neighbors - enclosed for me I guess!
Tks JW
You’re welcome 😀👍🏼
I love closed frame
Agree..!! 👍🏼😀
Open is the best version. Doesn’t get clogged with lint or dust and can be used it warmer temps.
I thought the same thing but in the video the tags on both show same max temperature of 104 degrees.
Pretty much all have that same temp rating where after that is where performance diminishes
Are you trying to say the enclosed one can't run in warm weather because I highly doubt that's accurate.
@@randybobandy9828 no they can get a little more hotter because its inclosed but not to say it can’t run when it’s hot by definitely can overheat and cut off!
Definitely Owen Wilson. Nice video. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thank you
😉😀👍🏼
Maybe Owen Wilson?
Love that vids man!
😉👍🏼
And thank you..👍🏼😀
Owen Wilson !
BTW nice comparison
Thank you 😀
👍🏼😀😉
Have you tested a Predator 8750 inverter open frame yet? Maybe verses another close to it's capabilities? I'm really on the fence about buying the Predator 8750 or the Predator 9000. The application would be for whole/mostly house back up power.
That 9000 is a awesome unit. Or the DuroMax as well. The open frame 8750 I haven’t had a chance to play with but it is a big price difference. So depends I guess what your really going for.
If you don’t want all the fancy and want simple go with the open frame. Definitely cheaper.
I have a predator 8750 generator and let me tell you that thing is loud as crap! It sure is reliable and hasn't let me down but I bought it as a back up power for my business and now I don't need such a big generator so I'm looking for a smaller one so I don't waste so much fuel.
Contest Entry - Owen Wilson
Can the 4650 enclosed run an ac and microwave ? I got a generac gp3300 and it sucks 😢 for rv
Yes!! It’s a great unit and a friend has the one seen in the video and it’s doing great!!
Here is a full load test showing my ac and microwave. Champion 4650 Review Setup Test Inverter Generator

@johnnysweekends thank you very much I appreciate it!
If you were talking while doing the sound meter test, that will affect the reading. Not talking will give you a more accurate reading.
It’s a voice over so not actually talking during the sound test.
Where did you get your generators from? We are thinking of getting two to run in parallel to power an RV.
Tractor supply for these models. Amazon sometimes has them. It just depends.
You can also try here for price shopping and comparisons. I found they seem to always have the best deals and clearance items. generatorbible.com/?pk_campaign=jw&CJp1avTDbv8
When will someone make a video discussing open, inverter and THD (total harmonic distortion)?
Did you want to know/ see the difference from a open frame inverter generator Vs a closed frame inverter gen?
Or regular non inverter Gen?
Great Job!! You helped me make my decision!!
Glad I could help… so what ya getting 😁
Great review. Owen Wilson
👍🏼😀
And thank you..👍🏼😁
One thing to remember is fuel capacity. The open frame remote start is a 2.3 gallon tank. The open frame manual start is a 4 gallon tank. Big difference.
True all in what ya want need. 👍🏼
Owen Wilson, you motor boating S.O.B.
🤣🤣🤣👍🏼
Would you happen to know if I can run my mytee 8070 extractor on the open frame generator? For car detailing. Just tryna see if it’d hold up with the power.. first time getting a generator so don’t know much
It says your amp draw is 19 amps of the available 30 amps. So it should run it no problem unless it has really high start up amps but I wouldn’t think it could be that high.
@@johnnysweekends thanks for the advice! I think it should would but only one way to find out is if I try it! Cant wait for the generator to come in lol thanks for this helpful video!!!
You’re welcome and let me know how it does with the extractor 👍🏼😀
If you can run it off of a normal 120v outlet you can easily run it from this generator. This has almost double the power output a normal household outlet does.
Owen Wilson!
😀👍🏼
What model # is the open frame inverter?
100892…👍🏼😀
But right now this is a better deal…
amzn.to/3wcvZmV
Maybe also a video comparing cost of using your generator for electricity for your house vs the cost of using grid power…
@@johnnysweekends unless you’re able to get free fuel ⛽️ with rewards program 🤓 right? And just use it from time to time with free fuel ⛽️…
Free fuel is always nice but would have to be a lot. It’s high power items like heater or cooling units that suck a lot of power. Microwaves or water heaters depending on type you have. Lights and stuff are nothing.
Why? That's silly. Nobody is trying to run a generator to power their home full-time vs. using the grid.
No thanks. 👎
open frames can run longer and harder because the heat generated dissipates way faster than the closed one.
Owen Wilson?
Correct, make sure you’re subscribe and you’re entered to win..👍🏼😀
Can you please do some reviews on the zombie boxes
Have been looking at some. I’ll let ya know soon…👍🏼
Can they run machines that run 220v ?
No 120v only
Owen Wilson
😂👍🏼
I don’t think the enclosed is that much quieter to justify the extra money.
It’s defiantly sounds much different in person.
Is it possible to turn the fuel off so you can let it run out of gas so fuel isn't sitting in the carb?
Yessss!!!!
Check this out here! 👍🏼😀 ruclips.net/video/9KLrEqDG1nA/видео.html
Owen Wilson
Hahhahaaha yes it’s Owen
Great video once again j5
😂👍🏼😉
SIMULARITIES?
Similarities….
@@johnnysweekends I see your point. I wasn't thinking RV but rather a home.
Owen Wilson lol.
What do you think? Which would you buy? The open frame is half the cost and may suit your needs just fine. Or is the quiet tones of the enclosed worth the extra?
Let me know.
Be sure to read description for prize giveaway info..👍🏼😀
I would buy the enclosed one.
You are trying to impersonate Lightning ⚡️ McQueen.
Ahh but who’s the actor..😂😀👍🏼
I prefer the quiet, but I’d look for a sale. LOL
Always look for the sales, but I prefer the quiet as well…👍🏼😀
Who won? Was it me? I hope it was me. lol
Lol Larry Keen won. I made a post yesterday 👍🏼
@@johnnysweekends Dang it. Sorry I missed it. Congrats Larry!
It was a random choice pick by computer 💻
I can’t stand it when someone has an open case generator at a campsite ridiculously loud!
Yea I get they are cheaper, but at least maybe a board or two just deflect sound makes a nice difference.
Owen Wilson…but a bad impersonation. :-)
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I tried but ya know.
Entered in..👍🏼😀
Your tryingbto impersonate Owen Wilson
Yuuupp!!!
Entered 👍🏼😉
