I own a T-tail Piper Lance and after 5 years of ownership it keeps impressing me more and more. When looking to buy I didn’t want to go 10kts faster and sit shoulder to shoulder with my buddy and have a shorter range like the Bonanza. I also flew a Cessna 210 for a couple years and it’s an incredible hauling machine great speed but only a true 4 seat plane. The small bench was not gonna work for my family. I can say my Lance gets 150kts at 65% power. Fully loaded max altitude on a hot summer day it will only get to 7-9k ft. I usually am 50 degrees rich of peak 16gph or less. But GAMI injectors are installed so I will start LOP ops. This is the best blend of an airplane ever made for GA. Family loves it. Just to clear the air….I’ve never felt any kind of adverse handling characteristics with the T-tail. Never porpoised never gotten “squirrelly” when slow. It feels stable and forgiving. I will say it takes about 30-40kts it’s to get the elevators where they have some authority. Otherwise best airplane on the market under $200,000!!! If I move up,Malibu.
Great plane. I restored a '78 t-tail for an owner in 2003 and flew the plane for a few years. It's a shame Piper stopped building them. I found pitch control on landing was not an issue if you flew it by the numbers.
@@dieselyeti I never have had that pitch issue. But super sad this airplane isn't still in production. I can't say enough good about it. Not perfect but just a great all-around family plane.
I prefer the low tail and taper wing of the Saratoga. We kept our T-tail Lance at the larger and longer runways at OKK, rather than the 2,000 foot home base grass strip at 8I3, which was where our shop was located.Flying the T-tail out of there was always challenging during the wet and winter seasons. It proved hard on the nose gear, as soft field technique does not work with the tail out of the air-stream. Actually doing an in-depth preflight on the tail requires a ladder. If kept to paved runways, it is fine. I did notice a smoother ride at cruise with the tail up in clean air.
The PA-32 260 or the PA-32 300 market is still hotter than ever before so if you see one that’s perfectly fitted for your family and the Avionics are updated then don’t waste your time anymore and get that purchase agreement signed and open Escrow account to put your money in and set up a pre buy inspection and get a Demo flight from the owner and get your CFI to come along with the ride
Not all PA32R’s are Lances. Half the photos used in this video are Saratogas, which are different. Make sure you do your homework on the series if you’re thinking about getting one.
I looked up the cost to overhaul the engine. That number plus the cost for a preflight inspection and routine items such as burned out bulbs and worn cable replacements talked me out of ever buying a used GA aircraft. And I didn't include avionics upgrade to the mix.
Your videos sure are great fantasy fuel. But with the "cheapest" planes coming in north of six figures, they also serve as a reminder that I have about as much chance of taking to the air as a boat anchor. Still love looking at them though.
You can find a very nice safe Cessna 150/152 or 172, Piper 140, 150, 160/161 Warrior or Archer all around $50,000. They will not be great looking and will need stuff but if you can afford a Honda, Civic you can do an entry level airplane. I paid $58,000 for my Arrow and put a lot into it but it is now a great plane that we flew from Ohio to Florida and back without issue. My plane will be in a magazine as a nicely restored Arrow next month, May 2023. My Arrow is 50 years old but it is strong and safe.
@D.W. Burns that is awesome, and I'm sure she's a beauty. I drive around in a $2000 Jeep that I had to pinch and save 2 months to buy. So $50.000 is a small fortune to me. Doesn't stop me from sitting at the end of Runway of our local airfield and watching the planes take-off and land. Thankfully, daydreams are free. Lol!
Just don’t buy the runway loving T tail. I guess if you live up north at sea level on longer runways it would be ok. However, they were so bad that the last 72 built at the factory had their tails chopped off and turned in to Saratogas with a change of ownership of Piper. I have flown all the six’s, all the lances and the Saratogas.
I flew a '78 t-tail Lance for a few years in CT, and had no issues getting in & out of Block Island's 2500ft runway at mid weights. It was a great plane & true 6 seater.
Never understood that some take issue with a plane where you cannot fill the seats and the tanks to max at the same time. Let's say you had a plane that you could. What if you didn't need all the seats filled and you wanted a bit more range that trip? well, you'd be out of luck because you wouldn't have anywhere to put the extra fuel, even though you would have the carrying capacity to add more fuel. Hence the reason planes are designed so you can trade passengers or cargo for fuel or fuel for passengers or cargo.

@@ConvairDart106 Good point. I have never wanted to put a retract on a grass strip. On a hot summer day, it will eat up some runway at gross.

I agree, great aircraft, but for a family of 6 the Cherokee Six or Lance is a more practical proposition.
