Otoboke Beaver: Tiny Desk Concert

Mannie Fresh bum rushed the crowd and mugged for the camera. Soul Glo's Pierce Jordan stunted on office furniture. Moses Sumney played our window-side piano. Some moments were staged and others spontaneous, but sometimes an artist just needs to "break the frame" of Tiny Desk. Case in point: Our puny shelves and cluttered junk could not contain Otoboke Beaver's Yoyoyoshie, who literally lept out from behind the Desk, ran to the wide shot and shred a noisy guitar solo most triumphantly.
Kyoto, Japan's Otoboke Beaver came into the NPR Music office with string lights color coordinated to the members' floral print dresses, an edamame hair clip for our wall and a giant, inflatable beaver. In two-minute bursts of fast, furious and outrageously fun punk rock, the band's music is a gleeful exercise in absurdist evisceration - of Japanese societal norms, gender roles, annoying trolls and bad boyfriends. Every song smirks as it explodes. At the Tiny Desk, Otoboke Beaver speeds and screams through its catalog - Itekoma Hits, Super Champon and its singles compilation Okoshiyasu!! - with acrobatic speed and intensity. An unhinged delight.

Great review Antonio
F*** YEAH
And yet, there's harmony. Of chaotic good.
Your bald headed mom
The goat is here
The guitar player has so much personality, she's just so entertaining to watch. And like every great bassist the bass player knows that to show emotion is to show weakness.
What's the difference between a coffin and a bass guitar?
With the coffin the body is on the inside.
Unlike Sam Wilkes who is the God of emotional bass faces
Kaho is such an insane drummer. Love how she plays!
Not too mention a total beauty.
She's freaking fabulous... That drumming on I checked your cellphone is NUTS!!!!!!
Live it's insane!! I saw her in LA in this dingy underground club and both she & them, are the truest f*cking punk, 100%!! They're absolutely phenomenal..
Are you for real? She plays like she just started learning the drums 2 weeks ago.
@@SAMMl watch your mouth when you speak of that which you do not understand
That orange guitar is sweet. Looked it up, it’s her signature model.
Same with the bassist's guitar. Both by the same brand.
whats the brand? It looks super cool.

Matching eye shadow too !
I miss the Gibsons
The most authentic punk band I’ve seen since back in the golden days. Their energy is unmatched
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Musically not the greatest imho, but truly authentic punk, no doubt.
😅c😅😅😅😅ab😅 x,,:”.❤wwsolovlo
What’s your criteria for being authentic?
Also, is it on a spectrum or is it binary?
Lastly, are you sure you’re not projecting authenticity onto this band solely because you’re thirsting for it and/or it makes you feel good as opposed to it actually existing?
Im asking these questions because It just seems like every other person on social media is an expert when it comes to authenticity/genuineness. No disrespect
@waynedexter If you asked me, I agreed that it's authentic because this music has most of the characteristics that I think "oldschool" punk music has, and the performance is also similar. This comes from my experience (I'm not that young anymore), but I'm not an expert at all. I'm just a casual punk listener, but I've also learned a thing or two from my friends, who are much more knowledgeable about punk music and culture.
I’m in love with the guitarist. She seems like an absolute psychopath.
Might be my favorite modern punk band
Ez
I thought so too then I saw a them live now they’re with my all time favorites
Matching eye shadow too !
I just saw them 4 times on their spring tour. I was worried they wouldn’t meet my expectations because they were so high. They were my top 4 most fun shows I’ve ever been to.

thanksss
Excited to love this
I love that the camera matched the energy , the constant zooming in and out, quick cuts and panning the camera between the musicians and the more obvious handheld look of it all. very enjoyable performance
Jajaja eso no es ya en la edición?
Put the CC on it shows the translation to English. Amazing, thought-provoking group, energy, tight, syncopated and at times fluid.
THANK YOU. I've looked up translations to their songs before but I think they were all machine-generated. These actually make sense.
Thank you!
Thank you! I’ve never found a translation before. Re-watching now.
Ahhh yes!!
so helpful tysm
they're currently at the top of my "dream concerts I have to attend to". If they can bring all this energy in a Tiny Desk Concert, imagine at a tiny club!
I saw them in Austin last year and truly one of the best show I have EVER been to
Seen them twice in Chicago and they are INSANE live
I've seen them twice in Groningen and they are amazing live!
would absolutely recommend. Saw them at a hong kong festival where moshing was technically disallowed, so the fact that we broke the barriers says a lot about the energy of the show lol.
@@jickamangah and the comedy improve from Yoyoyoshie to fill the time for repairing is pure genius, the Mario theme!!! What a memorable afternoon
Reading through the comments on this video it's interesting that people either absolutely love it or absolutely hate it and there's no real middle ground - and that's a good thing I think!
That’s usually the response to pure punk in general .
Most music that’s a bit challenging to people has that effect at first, who knows maybe what the consensus will be in 50 years
I genuinely can't fathom hating four people having this much fun.
I was having a hard time getting into their studio recordings as a whole earlier today (yep, new listener, haven't had a chance to hear this performance yet).
I was kinda misled expectations wise as the first song I heard was ''S'il Vous Plait'' (from a 2016 ep). It's quite a bit different than many of their other songs. Their full length album from 2016 is also pretty darn good.
But outside of that small window of their recordings (thus far) I've not been able to get thru a number of their songs. Now, I was a tad tired at the time, so gonna try some of those again later.
At any rate, they are enormously talented. My brain was able to comprehend that much even though trying to listen to some of their songs (studio stuff anyway) was like having nails and chards of glass sent into my brain at a 1000mph.
Still though I listen to a wide variety of music across a variety of decades. I'm no stranger to Punk music (heard some Hardcore too).
This has 13k likes and 300 dislikes I'm pretty sure most people liked it
Wow, drummer is a force of nature
Kahokiss is the real deal
I’m 65 years old and was honestly starting to think rock is dead, and then these 4 young ladies obliterated that line of thinking 🤪
You might think rock was dead if you only listened to the radio or watched TV..
I was just thinking to myself today how I'm almost overwhelmed with the amount of amazing bands that I've been hearing lately.. music is in a truly incredible place right now. From bands like All them witches, King buffalo, QOTSA still touring and releasing great music, to the plethora of incredible artists coming out of my home of Australia right now such as King gizzard, Murlocs, ORB, Mt mountain, Brown spirits, Pond, hiatus kaiyote, Mildlife, surprise chef, karate boogaloo, Gum, Glass beams.. The list goes on and on.. I couldn't be more appreciate for all the artists we have giving us all this great music, there's definitely thousands more that I could've mentioned (Minami Deutsch, Hermanos Gutierrez, puscifer, tinariwen, Khruangbin, the smile) it literally goes on and on and on
Right there with you. At 42 most rock now is cloned spiritless garbage. These ladies are very refreshing.
Saw this band three times last year. Each time was a blast, and they never missed a beat. High recommend.
I like your username lol
I was totally absolutely not expecting anything that happened in this video, I laughed in surprise the whole time and I'm completely in love with this artists. Amazing!!
I didn't know how such a wild band would go in a smaller quieter space but this is amazing.
love tht this is toned down compared to their othr live performances nn its still so much higher energy than most other tiny desk concerts i've seen 😆 evn in this small space they brought the energy🩵
Absolutely blistering live. They tore the roof of venues in Nottingham and Leicester when I saw them in the UK. Apparently repairs are still underway...
They have a show in London early July
@@hadror13 ticket purchased!
Absolutely insane band. Glad to see they're getting broadcast to a wider audience
My science teacher recommended me this band and I honestly wish I knew about them sooner!! I love their energy sm!!!
Now thats a good teacher to have!
bassist on another level, this was awesome
the bass is gorgeous
yes it is a nice bass. i like the guitar too.

タイニーデスクありがとう!!
I don't even want to admit how many times I have watched this video. My saving grace is that I have been proud to spread the word as a musical ambassador
!!!! Glad they’re getting more recognition, they’re so cool
Love this group, clicked and listened through as soon as it got posted 😭😭
Wow they are incredible. Tiny Desk is killing it lately
Arguably one of the best live performers I've seen. Their energy is unreal. Need to see them live again.
WOW ! What a frantic band. Nonstop energy. I also love that orange guitar.
Frigging love this band. They always manage to get me pumped up, and put a huge grin on my face. Hope to see them live someday.
Great performance👏🏼 They made the audio engineer and the camera crew really work for it 😁👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Hands down my favorite punk band doing it. The energy in their shows is unmatched. Love them, they killed this! So happy for them. ❤❤
Yoshie is the the coolest guitar player alive.
Great camera work. Really captured the fun.🎥🎉

love the energyy
Amazing. Im exhausted just watching them.
First time hearing them. I love the chaotic energy
seen them twice in concert, will continue to see them for as long as i am able
One of the best things I’ve ever seen!!! Incredible band
So glad to see them on here!
Kaho playing with wood brushes 🤯 The most punk non-punk move possible
Non punk? This sounds like punk to me
They're actually called Rods and probably at the behest of the sound engineer(s). Most drummers would rather not use them.

@@craig8860 Thanks Dad!
I've seen them live, this band brings me great joy.
So talented, so effortless, so graceful. What a delightful discovery 😊
Best energy in a live show I've seen in ages. If you can, see them.
that was so weird... I love it!
this is amazing, I can't wait to listen to their entire discography now !
Amazing. I really like their songs, especially the lyrics, which are really unique. I hope to share this fun with more listeners.
They are bloody bonkers....love them for it.
Didn't know I needed this! Glad I'm here!
これ少年ナイフの跡を継ぐバンドやね。大阪出身やし。でもところどころ出てくるフレーズがめっちゃ義太夫節や。そこはかとなく伝統芸術とつながってるっておもろい。がんばってや!
I love Shonen knife!
Radical!!! Exhilarating! Pure energy! Wait… I’m floating!!! 🌞🤸🏽♂️🙌🏼🖖🏽
Hands down, one of the all time best tiny desk performances!! Encore!!
Their energy was top-notch! They looked like they were having a lot of fun, especially Yoyoyoshie!
i saw them live last year front row, it was THE sickest show i've ever been to. so glad they're getting the attention they deserve
Cannot fault their content and energy, their playing of instruments and theatrics while wearing pretty dresses! Best band in the world, at this time!
I loved every second of this✨
I LOVE the prevalence of punk that's been on tiny desk lately. What an insanely theatrical powerful performance. New fan
Seen 'em last year in mexico. Amazing show. We loved them.
Dam I really want to see them live. There energy and vibe is contagious🔥💛💜💛💜❤️
They're constantly touring and I've seen them twice in the past few years. They're in the middle of a US tour now.
They are fantastic live
Lucky enough to watch them live last year in Indonesia. The energy was crazy and truly skillful musicians!
Mad ❤to you all. Peace and Blessings
Haha dam cuz beavers
Thank you very much, or I would never have the oportunity to get know the band. Regards from Brazil!!!! Love it!!!!
CHAOS INCARNATE and i love 'em 🔥
Reminds me of the birth of punk!! Flipper, Dead Kennedy's, Fang, etc.
Ok , though those bands are
from the 2nd wave of punk.
The birth is earlier.
Saw them live in Toronto in March. Absolutely fun concert with great energy.
Shonen Knifes psychotic grandchildren ♥
...that grew up with powerviolence and jrock lols
Most definitely!!!! 💯
Kinda! i could see they playing together few years ago.
Otoboke are high on my must-see-live list, managed to see SK (so effortlessly cool, talented and still run their own merch stalls) and Mutant Monster who are also hectic in a venue! Wish I'd been able to see Melt Banana live but was born a little bit too late.
@@ChristopherWoods never have I imagined that I would read 3 of my favorite japanese bands mentioned on one single comment.
Out of all 3, I wish to see Melt-banana the most, but with drums and Rika on bass, which is probably impossible to happen now
Adore these girls! Any song which ends with the line "There's peanuts everywhere!" gets my seal of approval!!!

Thank u Tiny Desk. It is always a pleasure discovering new good band. 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Loved every second of it 🤓

One of best Japanese punk band ever. Full respect.

I don't know what I just heard and saw but I love it.
They are so cooooool
The energy from the thumbnail drew me in! They’re so cool!
I have all their recordings. I am sitting here, thinking that crew at NPR has never seen anything like that before. Lol.
They just had their first mosh pit from a Soul Glo performance that released earlier this year. The crew had not seen that before 😆
DID NOT think I'd see them here! 😮❤️
One of my favorites, really. We need punk now and always.
if you ever get the chance to see them live, please do!
"different strokes for different folks" - There's something out there for everyone! Rock on!
So dope, we need more of this
I didn't know I needed that, but I'm glad I did!
. . . this is the greatest thing I’ve seen in a long long long time. Wow!

Thanks for the music! This band is amazing and very fun to watch. I hope I can land a show someday, but doesnt seem they will go to Europe :CC
