    "Pedestrians crossing" is most likely an old footpath route, normally much older than the road, and with the exception of motorways they are often left in place with no bridge or tunnel.

      My thoughts, but being a map nerd and a walker, I checked on StreetMap, there is a footpath that crosses the road, however as the route is anamed 'trail' with green diamonds, the route is permissive running parallel to the road and crossing at a farm bridge. Ashley drivers under at 10.05.

    Great car the F80 M3. I ran one for around 18 months. Was quite a handful on public roads, amazing front end grip but very analogue on the accelerator. Torque was very peaky and back end could easily kick out albeit easy to catch. Swapped it for a Tesla now. The performance and control of this car is far more accessible although it brings a nice sense of calmness to every journey.

    Positioning of hands on steering wheel. One hint my driving 'instructor', who was the son of a policeman, suggested we should not poke our thumbs through the wheel. The reason is that in the case of an unexpected impact we would almost certainly dislocate our thumb joints and render ourselves helpless to do anything following the crash. So I've always tried to follow that rule.

    • @Zeem4
      @Zeem4 2 года назад

      Strangely enough, the same applies to riding a bicycle - don't grip the handlebars with your thumbs underneath, because if you crash you'll probably break both of your thumbs.

    It looked like a pleasant drive on decent roads - not exactly the Brecon Beacons but hey. Horrible though, driving into low winter sun, even worse on wet roads.
    I like your attitude to the speed camera. They kind of feel sneaky but anyone driving should know the speed limits for their vehicle (though I've never had a clear answer as to whether or not speed cameras catch van drivers who choose to ignore those limits), and so it's their own fault if they get done. I had a van behind me flashing his lights at every single vehicle to warn of a camera that was in a village with a 30 mph limit and some dodgy corners and junctions in it - it was like having an ambulance behind me. Seriously, if you haven't learnt by now that doing more than 30 in a village is dumb, dangerous and just plain daft, then it serves you right if you get caught. Obviously, a lot of people haven't learnt because they wouldn't put the vans there if they weren't catching people.

  • @15bit62
    @15bit62 2 года назад +8

    I know that section of road well, as my dad lives 10 mins drive from where you entered the A421. I used to ride up there on a 600cc class Suzuki when i was going to visit and even though i was often paying pretty cursory attention to the speed limit (cruising 70-80 on open sections) there were packs of big bikes that would literally teleport into my rear view mirrors and then disappear into the distance. They were easily going well over 100mph.
    Ashley, apologies if this seems like a personal question: As someone who obviously takes speed limits and driving safety very seriously, i'm really curious why you bought an M3 Competition? As a road car it seems embody the very opposite of what you teach. Did you have aspirations to do a lot of track days?
    A comment on the vid - you should probably mirror the inset next time, cos it looks like you are in a left hand drive 🙂

  • @matthewwinn979
    @matthewwinn979 2 года назад +1

    I know the A421 very well. The camera van is often there on the Finmere bypass, either at the Preston Bissett turn (for westbound vehicles) or on the bridge south of Tingewick (eastbound). In both cases they're just round a gentle bend in the road so by the time you see them it's too late to react. I once had a bike pass me at 150 mph down that section, but the police weren't there that day so he got away with it.
    The roundabout at the western end of the Finmere bypass annoys me. There are two lanes as you approach from the A4421; the left lane is for going west on the A421 or to Finmere and the right lane is for going east or to the airfield, but for some reason people unfamiliar with the area tend to pick the left lane to turn right.
    Outside the rush hour that stretch of the A421 tends to be fairly quiet. The main issue isn't heavy traffic but tractors, because there are many farms adjacent to the road and it's the only route farm traffic can take.

    Nice video Ashley. Great driving as usual and I enjoyed the commentary. Yes there's always regret when handling over a wonderful car, but head rules heart on these occasions and it generally works out OK in the long run.
    Can I ask why you bought an M3 Competition? I have a Jaguar XF S Supercharged myself, with 375 bhp, but I reckon I can only safely and legally use about 30% of the car's performance capability on public roads. I expect it would be the same on the M3 Competition. For me, having a powerful car gives me better options for making progress in overtakes; gives me a quicker take off from the lights (without drama) and it also has better handling, making driving more fun: but in reality I hardly ever get to use the performance!
    Accelerating abruptly would dump a lot of power to the rears and, yes Traction Control would take care of it, but I'd argue having traction control kick in too much is bad for the rear brakes. So, as you say, better to be smooth and measured with the loud pedal!
    I did do skid pan training once but I reckon you would need to do it more than once to really cement the lessons into muscle memory. Would you agree?

  • @steveknight878
    @steveknight878 Год назад

    You mentioned not braking in a corner - I have long thought that, generally, if you feel that you need to brake on a corner then you probably shouldn't - you should be able to get round the corner at that speed, or - if you really are going too fast to make the corner - then braking will be more dangerous (causing break-away of the rear end) than maintaining your speed, or even gently accelerating. Is that a reasonable belief or not?

  • @steveknight878
    @steveknight878 Год назад

    Not signalling if there is no-one to see the signal - I have had this argument so many times. Everyone tells me that I am wrong (and that the IAM is wrong) - they say that you should always signal, just in case there is someone that you didn't spot. For me, that is part of the point - you should be looking thoroughly, so that you don't miss other people; and if you cannot be sure that no-one will appear (at a narrow road junction, for instance) then fine - signal. But the thing is that you have observed, thought about it and assessed the situation, not just automatically signalled and assumed that means you can make the manoeuvre.

    Great video as usual Ashley. One question about the action @7:28 however: can moving nearside to create more road space for on-coming vehicles looking to overtake in-fact create more danger by encouraging the overtake? I imagine it similar to moving near-side to create space for trailing bikers who may wish to pass, with them then effectively slicing in-between two cars. If you create the space and someone thinks they can fit, they may well go for it, even if it is a squeeze.

What he meant was he was facing and driving away from the sun so he should perhaps only be bothered by it if looking into his rear view mirrors. However any vehicle in font of him and looking his way could be startled by the bright and low sunlight [ it was December after all ] and therefore one must be aware of all the danger no only to you but to all other road users created by bright and low sun. Don't you find it somewhat disconcerting when driving round a roundabout and looking to your left at vehicles wanting to enter that roundabout from your left that they don't seem to want to stop and indeed seem to want to come in on you before you have cleared that junction that they have now driven out of. It makes you become concerned as they are anticipating your speed around and in front of them and by that anticipation they expect you to maintain it and they then from almost overtaking you on your left they pull in behind you, directly and more or less immediately tailgating you around the roundabout.

    I am sure that many drivers have become concerned about approaching vehicle overtaking cyclists. It appears one should not touch a cyclists or be anywhere near him with a barge pole. lol. That concern by drivers having to overtake cyclists believing that if they fail to do it wrong they will be on candid camera to the local police and as such they give far too much concern and space and more so on a narrow road that distance that they give to a cyclist can mean that they are almost all the way over into your space and approaching you at collision speeds.. They maybe do not know that you are their at all as their concentration is now on their overtake and not on your side of the road.. So be very aware on country roads particularly narrow ones when seeing vehicles approaching and having cyclists to pass.

      No issue. Ashley was around 4 secs away from when the pedestrian was on the footpath. Plenty of time.

      @Kris_M 2 года назад

      @@MrJohnny3shoes It was 2 seconds and a few tenths 15:19 to 15:21. But how does that make it okay?
      Is it okay to go through red with a car as long as other road users are 2 seconds away?

    • @MrJohnny3shoes
      @MrJohnny3shoes 2 года назад

      @@Kris_M No it wasn't 2 secs it may have been just under 4secs. Also if entering onto another road as Ashley did, you MUST give way to whatever is on that road. The pedestrian was already on that road before Ashley.
      If it's not ok then why didn't Ashley mention it???

    Did i hear that right? £100 for the YEAR to insure your BMW for you and your wife? How? I'm paying £60 per month for a 1.4L Honda Jazz.

      17:58 sounds like 600 odd pound. Therefore almost same as you (50+ monthly)

      @@DeeSock Yeah, now I'm wearing my headphones I can hear it, but sounded like 100 on my phone speaker. However, that's still very cheap for a performance car like that. I would guess it would be upward of 1.3k per year for me. Edit: Just did a comparison on an M3 BMW. 3k for the year.

      @@zaixai9441 it would make sense that driving instructors get lower insurance premium for themselves driving. Also likely a lengthy no claims history will massively reduce premium . And parking car not on the road etc

      You do realise that the same mic is picking up both - a little eq shaping might help, but there are also subtitles.

    A few roads with which I am more familiar, Ashley. I often travel parts of the A43 to go between Cambridgeshire and the South-West. Been to Silverstone & close area. Hope you & yours have had an enjoyable Christmas. Looking forward to more of your videos in 2022.
