Thanks for the idea! The original stuff has tetrafluoropropene in it which is what causes the strong spray. At 80 PSI, the spray is weak by comparison. BUT...it's still effective after training with one can of the real stuff. The SSSCats had become a visual deterrent even when empty. After a while, however, the cats realized they no longer posed a threat. The blast of air is enough to get them back in check.

These Office Depot Cleaning Duster spray cans work perfectly with the Ssscat mechanism, and costs about $4-5 a can, for larger cans than the originals. (Also the strength of the spray is good -- maybe not as strong as original Ssscat spray, but pretty darn good.) This has been a great solution for us because although I was able to do the pump-it-yourself method from the video, it's a hassle, the spray you get out of the refill is very weak, and each self-refill lasts a very short time. We are buying the Office Depot cans in bulk!

I bought a ssscat system several years ago when mine were all kittens but I kept forgetting to shut off when not needed & I set it off all the time. Didn't last long. 7 yrs later I tried again and it worked so well that I got another one. First cans only lasted a short time, but the second set I bought lasted several months. If it wasn't for the fact that I kept forgetting to shut them off when I walked in they'd probably still be full! After a while you could just put the empty can there. All they need to see is the can and that alone will deter them.
I haven't tried filling the cans yet. I don't have a pump or compressor but I'm definitely saving the empties and trying it before I ever spend money on another can of air!
    Great idea!!

MARVELOUS! THANKS for saving us money!
We wanted to buy the SSSCat device but the cans of *air* were deterring us! They retail for $14 in our town.
Our 4 month old kitten loves to counter cruise and table cruise; it is stressful for all involved telling her 'NO!' every time she jumps up on the tables, kitchen countertops!
Now off to buy a couple o' rubber, tire valves/stems ....and our SSSCat device! We already own a tire pump.

True that! We have one S3cat device and it gets moved around frequently but it works wonderfully, seemingly imprinting on our cat that the counter or table is off limits once she is "hissed" at by the air!
Now on to our next task: putting air back in it! Hopefully we will figure out the attaching a NAPA valve-stem to the can and our bicycle air gauge pump without too much fretting. LOL.

Yeah there's kind of a learning curve (depending on the cat). I found after a while that even if the ssscat was empty, its presence was deterrent enough. But every once in a while somebody would figure out it was empty, thats when refilling occasionally will reenforce its scariness. Thanks for watching!

I rotate the Ssscat cans with other empty aerosole cans, (that don’t have the sensor and don’t do anything), and they learn to avoid aerosol cans, BUT, you have to have armed one in there every so often, because a smart cat will question it every so often. You can even cover the armed can with contact paper and cover some blanks with the same paper and make it even more effective.

This is an interesting trick, but it relies an inaccurate scientific explanation. The ssscat can does not contain air. Shake it when it is full and you will feel and hear that it contains a pressurized liquid, not a gas. When the container's valve is opened, the liquid is forced out of a small hole and emerges as an aerosol or mist. As propellant expands to drive out the mist, only some propellant evaporates inside the can to maintain a constant pressure. Outside the can, the droplets of propellant evaporate rapidly, leaving the payload suspended as very fine particles or droplets. This looks like a puff of air to a person or a cat, but it is not air. Pushing air back in the can with a bike pump can only achieve a tiny fraction of the function of the original can. If aerosol cans were simply filled with compressed gas, it would either need to be at a dangerously high pressure and require special pressure vessel design (like in gas cylinders), or the amount of payload in the can would be small, and rapidly deplete.
However, you are correct that this product is ingenious. It works wonders on cats.

@@uptone12111you’d have to use a large expansion vessel used on a central heating g system and a solenoid valve triggered by a PIR sensor. The vessels have a rubber bladder inside which can be precharged to 1.5bar. The solenoid valve and refill would be connected to the other side of the bladder and could be charged up to 1.5 bar. That would give a powerful jet of air that would last a long time

Hey, this is brilliant! I had thought about a refillable air can for this, and wished someone made one... but it never occurred to me to refill the little gold mine from the company, instead of just sending them gold. I had tried several brands of compressed air cans, some small, some large... but they didn't work well. It probably has something to do with the valve in the Ssscat can, that releases the air in a predetermined volume. I'm also surprised that another company hasn't come out with a similar cat deterrent, that doesn't cost as much... AND uses an air can that is larger, and easily refillable!?! Seeing how important a device this is (it doesn't just keep cats away from plants or certain rooms... it can keep them from going someplace where they could be badly hurt or killed)... you would think the star of "My Cat From Hell", Jackson Galaxy, would invest money into a similar product that was either more affordable (and better for the environment), or had more features. I wish there was a model with a clock in it, so you could have the device ONLY operate during certain times of the day, so you could set and forget.
I don't have a bicycle/foot pump... but I DO own an air compressor. I just hope I can "carefully" refill these cans, and not blow them up. I don't want to be known in the news, as the guy who was killed, refilling an pet deterrent air can! "In news today, a local man was killed by an 'air grenade' he detonated!"

    • @ZackOfAllTrades

Interesting, I wonder if maybe the distance from the base of the valve stem to the actual core of the valve is too short causing the stem of the can to prevent the valve from opening and letting in the air. Maybe try removing the valve stem core or not pushing the whole thing down quite as far onto the can.

I bought a portable air compressor and a power adapter for it and I can get it it filled in a out 3 seconds so it's worth it for me.

This video motivated me to try and come up with another solution. Basically refilling the cans using large cans of compressed air which are obviously way cheaper than a refill. I bought 1.2L of compressed air for 18 dollars which will give me almost 10 refills. Ive uploaded a video to my channel, let me know what you think!

Once this arrives, I think I'm going to drain out the deterrent and just put in regular ol' air, to keep the birds from inhaling something bad.

    Superb!
Never thought of this when I used to use them.
Btw you think those prices are high? The importer to U.K. is about double btw.
It used to be £30 for the head and about £7 a tin. That went up to £11 a ton which was pricey but then it shot up to £15-18 and now it’s almost £25 for the refill!! Taking the piss big time.
Heads went up in price aswell, way over £60 or 70.
An alternative to the pricey refills is office supplies compressed air. I got a pack of 4 for about £5. Which shows how much the rip off prices were let alone now.
But I’m not sure of this broke the seal on a head as it stopped working and I haven’t bothered since.
Unfortunately don’t have a choice now but to let the cat into bedroom as carpet got ripped.

What is the limiting factor in obtaining "only" 80psi? Is it the sealing between the bottle stem and the tire valve? If this was made to be better somehow and you used an air compressor instead of the bike pump, then the can becomes the limiting factor, correct?
Perhaps something off of McMaster-Carr could be implemented and adapted to the process?

  • @foxworth303
    @foxworth303 3 года назад +3

This "kind of" works. I tried it and the resulting stream of air was much softer and weaker than the original cans when they're full, likely because those use a liquefied propellant that decompresses to a stronger pressure. If your cat is not easily spooked or really wants to get where it doesn't belong, this is not as strong of a deterrent as the original unfortunately.

Hi Zack! I bought the valve and tried to use it with my pump however I was not successful. I then figured that the valve I bought has a pin on the end that goes in the pump and if that pin is not pressed in, no air goes through. Does your pump have some sort of mechanism that pushes the pin in? I’m just trying to figure out what I need to do differently. Thanks!
