The TS9DX came out in 1998. Early units had weaker TS9 mode but was fixed with a jumper circuit. A friend just picked one up for me in japan this week.
I routinely put a tubescreamer or copy in front of my Vox Pathfinder 15R amps all the time. The secret is when I was looking at a schematic of a fulltone plimsoul, it’s a combination of soft clipping going into hard clipping. Then I realized the pathfinder amps have hard clipping diodes. So I use the tubescreamer with its soft clipping and blend in the gain on the amp to get the right amount of hard clipping. It works so well!
I 100% agree! Robert plays and explains, fiddles with controls and has a blast doing it. Most others read the product info off of the manual and usually don't play much. One of the many reasons this channel is in my top 5 on RUclips.
Was looking at TS9's and then saw a DX on ebay, had to check out a video to see what it was like and watched this. Going for the DX now thanks to this great demo. Thanks for the help! Subscribed

Long story short sure enough was this TS9DX setting on floor pad. Then today here ya are!! Yep bank acct over drawl is going to happen 😂 This ped is a must have!! Thanks brother ya sold Doc!!👌👏🎸
My favorite iteration of the TS is the JHS Bonzai - it’s kind of all of them but it’s pricey! Still cheaper than buying all of them that it covers and less board space obviously. I don’t know enough about the nuances between them to have a favorite.
I've always liked sound of the Tube Screamers. Nice split of you playing bass dig it! The song is awesome I like it cool lead break and lead and segway back into the main riff.
This has been a staple in my bass rig for about 20 years. It's been in "+" mode for 10 years and I have yet to find an overdrive to knock it off my board. The modes I BELIEVE utilize an optical sensor, making it a bit unique. The first run were made by Maxon before Ibanez parted ways with them.
@@Metalbass1979 That "+" setting seems to have less of that bass loss that Tubescreamers are known for. Analogman actually recommended the plus setting when I talked to them about 10 years ago. The bass version has a blend knob, but I'm not really a fan of those.
"She walks by moonlight." YES! All these years later I'm finally looking to buy my first tube amp and Tube Screamer. Didn't even know about this TS9DX. Been a subscriber to your channel for a few yrs but obviously missed this episode until now. Did a search on TS9DX and your video popped up. Need to look for how it sounds with Fender single coils/clean amp. I love hard rock/metal but it's not what I tend to play. Why? I don't even know...my #1 is a Telecaster. Your jam at the end sounded great.
I was in my local GC last month and they had a used TS-9 Tube Screamer that had been modded. On the back was a signature in Sharpie that said "Circuit modified by Keeley 7/18/98" (I think that was the date) and it was $259. I should have bought it. I had no idea who Keeley was until I got home and looked it up. This guy now has his own line of pedals, but back in the day he just modded pedals, amps and other gear. Anyone else know about this mod?
Oh yeah, Keeley modded pedals are great. That’s how Bob Keeley got his start. He was doing mods of various different Boss pedals and a few other things, so he became a Boss dealer so that he could save money on new Boss pedals. You could either buy a Keeley modded Boss pedal brand new, or you could send him your Boss pedals for him to mod. Then he started designing his own pedals, hit a home runs with his 2-knob and 4-knob compressors, the Katana Boost, and a few others, and slowly moved away from modding other companies’ pedals focuses more on his own pedal line. Keeley pedals are awesome!
I'm digging the pedal. The + and Turbo settings were particularly sweet. When I got back into playing, I opted for the JHS Bonsai when I was looking at Tube Screamer types of pedals.
I’m glad you did the demo with a little breakup in the amp for a proper tube screamer demo, everyone always uses a clean tone and don’t do the pedal right
One of the best, unknown TS-pedals has to be of the same origin as the chrome ones (Metal End) behind you on the shelf. Namely the Biyang X-drive (OD-8) (also as Akai under OEM?) Tweaked, silent, different modes (turbo included) - and - a socket for exchangeable chipsets on the underside of it. (they come with a few different ones) Check it out - of course no longer widely available, in that form, but i think they make a similar surface-mounted version of it. I got most of the chrome(ToneFancier)-line, not affiliated in any way, just very price/performance-oriented.
Nice demo on the different modes sounds of this pedal when boosting bro. I just want to make a suggestion though. With all due respect of course I recommend you try playing those riffs to a metronome to see where the timing could be cleaned up. As guitarists we all need to do that. Myself included on a regular basis. Cheers.
As always, great Demo Robert 👍. That's one of the screamers I hadn't heard of and I like it. Also can it be hooked up to the dirty Channel because I've always use distortion pedals with solid solid state amps through the clean Channel and I want something way heavier I was hoping with the Noise Gate and the tube screamer I could go right into my dirty channel of my 6505 MH?
Yep, just run them straight into the front of your amp. So your signal chain would be guitar -> TS9DX -> NS-2 -> 6505MH. The effects loop on the NS-2 is there if you’re running modulation or time-based effects into the effects loop of the amp. So if you’ve got a noisy delay pedal in the effects loop, you can run that signal path through the NS-2 before it goes back to the Return input of the effects loop. If you’re not running anything in the effects loop at all, just ignore that portion of the NS-2 and use the Input and Output jacks.

Would prefer demo using clean amp channel. Very hard for viewers to accurately hear just the effect of the pedal without your amp’s gain channel coloring the signal.
It’s an overdrive pedal, not a distortion pedal. You’re SUPPOSED to run it into a dirty amp.
Want to plays.ts 9. Ts 808 .done...
Is the website down? Has the domain expired?
To be honest, I haven’t checked on it recently. The friend of mine who was hosting it has started a new venture (among other things in that individual’s life) and I haven’t heard much from them in the last 6 months or so. I’ll check on it and get back with you.
God I miss you. I’ve been hanging out on my other account because I think the guitar world is too much for me sometimes 🎸 balance.
I’ve been here! LOL

Why so many dislikes? I say salty boomers.
Dunno. Good thing RUclips views Likes and Dislikes the same so that my analytics still benefit either way. 🤷🏻♂️
Are you trying to play Funk#49 by James Gang? aka Joe Walsh? It's way off my friend

Midroll adds = Instant 'Dislike' .
Awesome, thanks man! RUclips changed their mid-roll ad settings recently and stuck a bunch of them on any monetized video over 8 minutes, whether creators wanted them there or not. But RUclips still views Likes and Dislikes the same, so I appreciate the boost in my analytics!
Super scooped and off time
