  • Ever wonder what it would be like to live in a mega-city during a major earthquake? The residents of Tokyo have a pretty good idea after experiencing the events of March 11, 2011. On the second anniversary of the earthquake, we invite you to feel the experience for yourself compliments of this video shot by SNA President Michael Penn. Coincidentally, he had an HD video camera in his hand and was walking through the Akasaka district of Tokyo when the shaking started.
    The Shingetsu News Agency was founded in December 2010 to give an independent and progressive voice to English-language news media in Japan. We are supported primarily by our SNA Patrons on Patreon and volunteer efforts by a small and dedicated team.

      Make no mistake. They are just as Shit Scared as the rest of of us, with one difference. They do not want to cause any problem by showing excess fear or panic. When these guys run you run too. I was in Kyoto when a large shake occurred some distance away, I noticed, as I see on this video an attempt get some humour going, which also works well . I was scared, but comfortable to be amongst these wonderful hardy people.. Japan A wondefrul country and people.

    My mother was in Tokyo during this quake, she said it was the most frightening thing she had ever experienced. The crazy thing is she was supposed to be on a train on her way to Sendai during the quake but canceled last second because she had a bad feeling about the trip. For all we know she could have been on one of the trains that vanished.

      Japanese have regular training for earthquakes, floods and other disasters. It's recommended to have an emergency kit, and required to have one at work. Despite pretty high death toll 18 000, it could be much higher, they are ready for any emergency like no one else. Unlike Indian Ocean tsunami 2004 where almost 300 000 people without any warning lost their lives.

    Every time I watch one of these clips of the earthquake and tsunami my heart goes out to the Japanese people! No one knew that day it would be their last day on earth or that their lives would change forever. No one knew that some or all their families would vanish. No one knew if the building they were in would collapse or that the structure they were next to would fall on them. I cannot believe how calm and structured the people were during the whole episode yet they knew in their hearts how frightening this moment in earth's history was. Lord help us, when it comes our turn to be as brave and calm as those that were photographed in this clip and be with those families that lost loved ones and possessions!

      When you combine a high IQ population with a culture that inculcates discipline and the delay of gratification, this is what you get. There is also very little feminism or multiculturalism in Japan, at least compared with western standards. Japan is highly homogeneous, 98,5% of the population is Japanese and most of the rest is composed of other asian ethnic groups like Koreans or Chinese. This homogeneity certainly plays a role in the fact that their society is so well organized, safe and clean.

    Some comments here underestimates it, some overestimates it. The video is taken in Tokyo, which is far away from the epicenter (like, the the distance from one end of Ohio to the other end). So, people are calm because of that. And so, no, the buildings you saw did not survive a 9.0 earthquake, though they are believed to be pretty strong. OTOH, yes, the shaking is mild in the video but if you search for video of cities that are closer, like, at Sendai, the scenes are much more dramatic.

    • @minakoa7178
      @minakoa7178 8 лет назад

      According to the Mercalli scale, Tokyo experienced an intensity of VII (very strong.) That's roughly the same intensity that downtown Los Angeles experienced in the Northridge quake. But keep it mind that Northridge lasted 10-20 seconds. The 9.0 earthquake lasted for 6 minutes.

    • @MegaFukuoka
      @MegaFukuoka 7 лет назад +8

      The shaking in Tokyo was not mild by any means. It is the effect of video + being on the street which makes shaking look smaller than it is. Tokyo got a spectrum from 5- to 6- on Shindo scale, which is sick strong and is able to destroy buildings. When it comes to Sendai and places where shaking was 7 on Shindo scale, most buildings survived the earthquake. It was very old and shabby houses which went down.

    • @minakoa7178
      @minakoa7178 7 лет назад +5

      MegaFukuoka I agree. It's hard to tell whether the shaking is strong in some videos of the earthquake. But I can tell you that I was in Kanagawa prefecture west of Tokyo (about 5+ on the shindo scale), and it was the scariest thing I've been through. It felt like being on a cruise ship about to capsize.

      I was in Tokyo on that day as well. I've been through thousands of earthquakes big and small, but it was the first and only time I ever heard the loud squeaking sound from walls of a building. It trembled insanely long, and the second impact hit again shortly after the first one. I literally thought the building was gonna fall. I know Tohoku experienced much more horrible things than Tokyo, but that moment in Tokyo was definitely something way beyond normal.

    I was working in Yokohama during this earthquake. I was on the fourth floor of a rather old building, and the shaking was incredible. I was stuck at work for several hours because the trains stopped running. I remember multiple aftershocks for many days, some of which would be considered large earthquakes on their own. You could not call anyone on your cell phone, nor could you text. The whole system was overwhelmed. Luckily, data still worked, and I could post on Facebook (I had an iphone at this time) that I was fine. What's going on right now with the COVID-19 pandemic is kind of similar, but in a much slower, drawn out manner. The feeling of uncertainty is the same.

    I wonder if it's really safer in the street. Japanese buildings are built pretty strongly earthquake resistant, so the structures are unlikely to crumble. But there could easily be windows popping out and similar things falling off. Lot of these buildings look pretty high. A plate of glass falling 10 stories is extremely dangerous.

      正解!揺れてる最中は建物の中で、机の下に入って頭や身体を守るように幼稚園から訓練します
      しかし、建物は崩れませんが『歪み』は起きる可能性があります
      建物が歪むとドアや窓が開かなくなり建物内に閉じ込められる可能性があるので、揺れがある程度収まったら外の安全な場所(学校の校庭や、広い公園など)に避難する
      というのが日本の地震の訓練なので、人が後からたくさん出てきたのは幼い頃からの訓練通りでした
      あなたの仰る通り、高所からの看板やガラスの落下も十分考えられるので、映ってる彼らは建物からもっと離れた方が良かったですね
