A building that is on "sliders" and "rollers" always comes up when there's an earthquake (I live in California). There's construction that's withstands earthquakes better, and it is used throughout new construction in California, but I can assure you there are no buildings on "rollers."
I love how those women protected the older one and got her under a table and covered her head with their hands. It's hard to know exactly what to do in earthquakes. I've been through enough in my life living in Calif. to know what to do when it happens.

I live in Southren California, and I hate earthquakes too. I've experienced two 7.0 earthquakes in my lifetime, but thankfully the epicenter wasn't close to me. The scariest one I've ever experienced was the Northridge quake in 1994, and that one was a 6.7 I think. I can't imagine living through a 9.0 quake. I would be having a panic attack like that girl. Poor thing.

I live in Saint Charles Missouri and I’m 53 years old and in all those years we’ve had like to tremors both registered maybe around three on the Richter scale. I cannot imagine what it must be like to live on the east coast of Japan.
I experienced my first earthquake in PH back in 2012. I was so confused I still sat on my chair and continued to write notes from the lessons. It felt like I was having a back massage. Everyone was panicking, and when we were about to go down the stairs there weren't any lights so I was complaining about it while my classmates were crying that it felt like the end of the world. Still loved the back massage.
When I lived at midway island atoll we had once a year tidal wave drills. All servicemen and their families are mandatory to take part. I was 7 yrs old at the time 1970 thru the end of 1973. Population of midway at the less than 1000. The island 2 square miles wide and 2 million albatross seabirds nesting. I was a navy brat
I felt a tremor once, in the UK, in about 2008/9. The ground vibrating and the walls and windows creaking scared the life out of me. It was so unnerving. Measured about 0.8 on the Richter scale. Respect to the Japanese.
Even in a 9.0 earthquake... People are helping each other to safety. Very little panicking. People still cheerful and polite to each other. No looting or rioting. People just lining up waiting their turn for food at groceries. Negligible structural damage(except the tsunami which there's no stoppin) < -impressive Man, what a great country and culture Japan has.
I found Japan is littered only when there is an earthquake, otherwise they are best example for discipline, cleanliness and neetliness. Perhaps no power on Earth can harm Japan other than natural calamities. It is a wonder of the world.

All these earthquake videos make me wonder why windows don't shatter. Wasn't the earthquake an 8.9? So, shouldn't buildings be shaking more violently and glass shattering everywhere?
I know tipping is not common in Japan but I would have definitely tipped the lady who made sure your mom was safe under the table while unconcerned about her own safety.
In these situation, you don't need to worry about the possibility that building such as Airport and station is destroyed. But, you have to awere of stuff above you. You are reccomanded to be under desk to protect your head from falling.
17th Sept 2011 at about 8pm was the first time I experienced a quake,it was 6.5 in magnitude and epicentre was about a hundred km away from my home,well I was only 8years old and outside there was a thunderstorm,so no electricity The quake remained for about 30sec but I was shaking for 30min

The earthquake in PA in 2012/2013 lasted about 10-15 seconds and it was super intense. I can't imagine one this long.

I remember this in the news back then. Japan was also hit with a massive tsunami that killed thousands of people :(
