Having worked at the veterinarian job for 12 years, I must say euthanasia was always the hardest for everyone at the job. It always put a damper on the day. This was a very extraordinary story. I got so caught up with the dramatic music that i cried at the announcement of the shattered pelvic bone. Then to see the orphans again, i couldn't stop the tears. Oh well, old age makes you MORE sentimental and I have see SOOO many successful rescues of the birds. It takes tough love to be in animal medicine and rescue. Hats off to you all at Wildlife Aid.

When the mildly sombre piano music began, I knew the mother wouldn't be making it. 😢 But the injury as described, was absolutely horrible, so it was good she didn't have to suffer and her babies will be sure to grow up nice and strong, so that's a sad, yet still beautiful story. Well done on the capture/rescue! You should include a small self-inflatable raft and a hand-paddle to the rescue inventory, for any future rescues like this! Working, while constantly obstructed by the net, seemed quite awful.

The capture of the mother was very rough. You could tell by the way she was captured in that net and knocked around. I can only imagine the additional pain that caused. But even worse was when she was manhandled pulling her out of the net. They clearly cut the film as it appeared he was grabbing her by the wings. This is how chickens are grabbed when they’re being taken out of transport crates after arriving at the slaughterhouse. Imagine having your arms behind your back and somebody lifting you up by your arms. It causes dislocation, broken bones, tears and bruises. Why? Because slaughterhouse workers can get away with it. Poultry have zero rights and zero protection under the laws. So as long as people continue to crave chicken flesh on their plates, The torture will continue.

and you would have an entrance where animals that fall in can climb out
but this pondreally was justa trap well from my experience the fish also will die if the pond makers dont secure it for the winter
we had a garden pond and one yer there was a suprising temprature fall so there was no styrofoam pad set on the pond
and all the frogs and newts where traped under the ice
the newts ahd no time to prepare for winter and the froggs couldent escape the ice on the water
they dies that toxicated the water and the fish also died
so if froggs fall in this pond they are fine till the water gets to cold cause for winter rest froggs dig into the ground and stay there half frozen
but when they cant get out of it they die

We can't be sure of how she sustained her injuries, as the family found her unable to move on top of the netting. She wasn't trapped in it so we would assume that she may have been attached by something beforehand and managed to escape. Sadly, as she was unable to use her legs, she couldn't get off the top of the netting.

Poor mama duck. I'm so sad she was injured too badly to recover, and had to be put down. I hope the babies will be ok, and grow up nice and healthy and strong.
Question. What do baby ducklings do when their mother is gone? How long do babies stay with their mother until they're ready to be on their own? Will/do they have another mother that can help them along until they're old enough?

It is wonderful that the ducklings still have a chance of happy healthy lives. Well done of capturing them in such difficult terrain and relieving the suffering of the mother duck. I do have a question if you would be so kind... what on earth is that huge netting protecting? I've never seen anything like that before? It looked like those other ducks are trapped under it too.

    • @patpierce4854
      @patpierce4854 3 года назад

I can guess it's for several reasons. Just before our son was born, we bought a similar Volvo wagon to be our main family vehicle. At the time, it had the highest safety ratings, and had the bonus of being comfy for long-distance family trips, able to haul a lot of stuff. When we got our dog as a puppy, the hatchback became the dog crate for transport; when we added a second dog and crate, both crates fit in the hatch, and the Volvo was my dog training and showing vehicle, as well as being the karate and soccer practice transport. When we decided on a new vehicle, friends of ours happily bought our old Volvo for their soon to be family transport. Last we heard from our friends, their 8 year old still loves riding in the back seat with their dogs, and the 20 year old Volvo wagon is still running like a champ. THAT'S why so many Volvos - very safe, very dependable, very capable, and very capacious (a dog trainer carries around almost as much equipment for the job, as we see Simon and Lawrie pull out of their Volvo for every rescue).

      @@wildlifeaid okay, thank you.
I've seen that on a smaller ornamental pond where the fish can't get into deeper water away from the herons but not on such a large pond. I would think such a large area of netting would be an expense and a bother to set up and manage.
It also creates problems like with the duck family.
How might mom have been injured ? She wouldn't have done it crash landing since the babies can't fly and the net would cushion her.
She couldn't have walked out there because she was paralyzed....so how?

So while the mum had to be euthanised , you’ve still saved her ducklings. Well done

Someone needs to figure out a duck wheel chair option. Even if it means living with people i think ducks and geese and swans etc can bond enough with people that in some cases they could still have a quiet life with their babies close by

I believe that all those involved with wildlife rescues and rehab in the UK along with those that support them, should petition the Queen to have those nets banned. Frankly they are causing more harm than good. And that's coming from a US citizen!
