I can't thank Bhante enough, actually. For all of his work in translating sutta texts, to his essays, to his sagely instructions as presented here. I must acknowledge Thanissaro Bhikkhu as one of the most important teachers of my life, even though I've never personally met him!

Bhante Gunaratana's new book "Beyond Mindfulness in plain english" is very good also.
I've discovered (obviously, with the guidance of the suttas) that thinking can indeed be 'used'. In practice, my aim is not to have 'no thinking' (I used to make this error) but rather to have just ONE thought - that of the breath. The more I can surrender to this process, without any judgement either negative ('this is boring') or positive ('oh this is blissful!'), the more steady the awareness grows. Anything other than the awareness (the 'thought of') the breath is a distraction.
But I am learning that vitakka-vicara is not thinking in the sense of proliferation, which is how we usually go about it (the thinking of daily life). In sustained attention on the object ('the body'), thought becomes more like a light that we shine on the object. It is only when thought wanders off that there's a problem. But with vitakka-vicara, there is only the object in mind - 'we' the observer seems not to apply here. And yet, effort must be gently maintained...who makes this effort? :)
