Dink the video (which I really liked by the way) makes AWSF seem like he’s settling for being friends with the guy , when in actuality I believe he has back regressed to being in love with him. That’s why the song ends with an unfinished chord progression. The first note on the album is not only played with the same synth, but in fact satisfies (or completes) the chord progression, essentially, he’s back where he started
Not necessarily a loop with the same person, I think. My interpretation of the album is that it outlines the CYCLE of relationships, not necessarily just one, and more specifically how NOT to behave in a relationship. Petty, toxic, clingy, timid, etc. That's why Igor is the main character's name, the name of a monster whose actions are controlled by another person. It's good thinking though with the synth loop, I love that theory. But I think it can show that those feelings only get carried onto his other relationships, because remember he's a naive monster and probably doesn't give himself the time to heal before moving on and having the same toxic experience with another boy.
Luke Whitten the last words on the album are we still friends (this cant end) are we still friends ( I still want to say hi) can’t say goodbye, can’t say goodbye. That signals to me an unhealthy continued affection. But I could definitely be wrong, this is mostly speculation.
Also: the ending note of ARE WE STILL FRIENDS? perfectly goes in to the opening note of IGORS THEME, what makes the album a perfect loop. A loop where Tyler wants to be friends with this person after he falls in love, but because he wants to be friends, he falls in love again and the whole thing loops
I also love how the album is a musical loop, signifying, ‘exactly what you run from is what you end up chasing' meaning no matter how many times you fall out of love, you’ll end up right where you started like a cycle.
This idea gets even better when you look at the fact that the final song in the album ends in an unresolved chord. If you start the album from the beginning again the long, static note at the very beginning resolves the chord from the end. The album (or experience) has to be played a second time to resolve the first listen, creating a loop.

@@slugoo6474 producing choosing the sounds, arranging, working on instrumental and vocal parts, recording all of them, sometimes and in tyler's case definitely also adding audio effects like distortion or reverb that help achieve a certain vibe and aesthetics soundwise. When this whole job is done, mixing is essentially just adjusting volume levels, making sure the frequencies mash up coherently, getting rid of unnececary sounds and just generally making the sound of the recording as good and clear as possible from a particulary technical standpoint. So in his case if he did all the PROUCING by himself, even if he had a mixing engenier, it's still very admirable and rare in mainstream modern music to be the only one person responsible for each and every one of the many many artistic aspects of the music that artist is putting out.
i think that he’s closing the door ( the easier way to get out of a room ) symbolizing his girlfriend, to open the window that is tyler. If that makes sense. You wouldn’t leave a room through the window unless there wasn’t another option. So by eliminating the other option that is the girlfriend, the window that is tyler is open :)
don’t forget my literal favorite part of the album: on are we still friends it ends on the same note/key as igor theme implying if he is “still friends” he will inevitably fall back in love with the boy again and go through the whole loop all over again. it’s truly such an amazing album
This album is actually the best composed story he has created. This is my favorite Tyler album because it’s truly just a beautiful, tragic, and healing story about complex and chaotic feelings of a shifty relationship. He truly delivered everything on this one.
So true. My first boyfriend lied to the school and said he had sex with me. I was so upset but I still loved him i didn’t know what to do. So we stayed “ friends “. I know that’s not the same as him choosing a girl over me , but he still lied to make himself happy while hurting me
And to add to the story; Igor is a Russian name with meaning - Warrior. Tyler goes through heartbreak, toxic relationship, jealously, but he comes back with a Warrior side. He comes back with Igor, his stronger, more mature side.
Skye Kallus the album encapsulates every emotion you feel. especially if the person dumped you for someone else in a heartbeat and you never saw them as a threat
Fun fact: at the end of the album you can hear IGOR's theme, implying that this story of falling in love and then realizing that it's breaking you is set to repeat.
WHOOAAA can’t believe I just realized “call me by your name cause I’m sorry” was from Timothée Chalamet’s call me by your name wooooow, and timmys a fan, they follow each other on insta
valid but please don’t credit call me by your name to Timothee,,, it’s not his media; he didn’t create it nor did he change the character or add anything. Yes he did a good job in the role but please don’t call the story “Timothee Chalamet’s”. it’s not his, it is the work of Andre Aciman
when this album came out i was having difficulties with my ex girlfriend. i listened to this album in it’s entirety and ultimately made my decision that it’s better that we go separately. i thanked her for everything she’s done for me and everything that we’ve been through. i haven’t put myself out there since then. but we continue to be friends.
@@kkcjackson not the point i was tryna make, i’m just saying this album helped me out of a rough spot with my ex girlfriend and a lot of the lyrics he was saying made me realize what i had to do, which was leave the relationship im still very much straight

Long story short i swore to myself that i would never text her back after how toxic it was. After that i found myself constantly listening to the album and coming to the realisation that i wish we could’ve settled for a friendship
I wish I were strong enough to settle for friendship, but I know that the story I share with this person isn't that of friendship. We both voiced our love for each other, and me seeing she isn't ok and is why she's decided to push me away, I can't do anything but hope she'll return. Theres something in me that keeps me waiting, although I've already seen things with clear eyes...
Being a gay kid growing up in the 90s I thought I never see the day that a big name artist make a hip hop album about being in love with a guy. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry... Thank you Tyler
@BeanBoy I doubt many people who have listened to Igor haven’t heard Flower Boy. To me, it’s good but Igor is way more complete/complex and presents itself as a better “album.” I like the individual songs from Flower Boy better tho
One of the reasons Igor stood out to me as a romance album is because the songs aren't stuck in a loophole, and there is actual progression and closure on the album.
Idk if anyone has also picked up on this. But on my first listen through, when I was listening to “Are we still Friends”, when there’s that “I’ve got to... KNOOOWWW” and the voice gets deeper, I took it as the boy saying “NOOOO”. Thus, rejecting Tyler and the rest of the song is just him begging and pleading. The scream at the end is him realizing that this relationship is finally over, just like that. Idk, it might just be me tho
The whole album is legit just about what you run from and ending up chasing it referring to how he pretends he doesn’t love him anymore and he’s moved on when he really hasn’t moving on to are we still friends meaning that he desperate to still be friends. The whole album is one quote “exactly what you run from, you end up chasing” niggas really don’t listen to the song and only listen to beats and lyrics but lyrics can mean WAYY much deeper, this entire album is beautiful but it totally didn’t need a rap album
First time I listened to Igor,, I was in a vulnerable place and it helped me beyond words can describe. Funny not funny how something can catch you at that precise point in time and cradle you through. Thank You Tyler
every time i hear “i don’t want to end this season on a bad episode” i triggered my tear ducts, but i never really understood why. this album, even though i didn’t understand it, has meant so much to me and it’s helped me get through a lot of things. now that i get the story, i can enjoy it more and appreciate it more. thank you for opening my eyes
This is Cherry Bomb erasure! He needed that album to define his sound. It gave him the ability to experiment with new instruments and lyrics, ultimately finding his wings afterwards. He would not have this refined sound of loud and grimy instruments with polished vocals if he never made cherry bomb. I wish more people would recognize the impact that album had on Tyler's whole career
Tyler himself said CB is his favorite album. Since his last album dropped idk if it’s actual, but until IGOR it was so that tells the impact CB has on his carreer !!
I think it's referencing running out of time when he says "I've been running out of spells to make you love me" Then on the next song he has a new magic wand
Turtleman Bruh you can’t just assume stuff like that. Maybe they picked it as a rap album because all of Tyler’s albums before that were considered rap albums, even Flower Boy, so they would just consider every album of his to be rap. But who gives a shit anyways the Grammys is nothing but a fucking piece of shit popularity contest.
@@danewa2008 no its because he's black if it wasnt then why do black artist never get any award outside of urban music (aside from john legend years ago) the grammys are very prejudice and shit
@@danewa2008 tyler explained at an interview why he thinks they categorized him because of his race. which is why they put him in the rap/urban category
“Thank you” is also sampled from the song fragile by yamashita tatsuro, which i think is particularly insightful to his changing feeling towards his love interest. The original song is a love song saying “thank you for you love, thank you for the joy, i dont ever wanna be alone again” but Tyler switched up the lyrics to show the sting of a love that he lost.
I think Tyler was truly just experimenting with music on Cherry Bomb, explaining the mass variety of music on the album. It was probably really important time tho, for T to improve and master his production abilities
Musicians: this album is just some songs that i wrote and they seem to work together genre wise Tyler: yeah i wrote a novel then sang it edit: bc this randomly get comments sometimes i just wanna clarify that i was testifying to how cool Tyler is for being in the limelight/mainstream and creating something like this. Lots of younger ppl love his stuff and i find it personally very important that kids/teen/young adults should know the artistry that music REALLY is and can be. I was raised on rock mostly but have always been into literally every genre of music, and yes! A lot of artists have "sung novels" for an album :D it was just the fact that Tyler is extremely popular and exposing the younger audience to it made me very happy, i promise im not stupid or without a music background LMFAO anyway, happy 2023 guys, hope you find new music that loves you as much as you love it 💕
@@damnnegroye8908 most bands write songs that tend to not have anything to do with the other songs. Ofc there are some out there who do/have, tyler is just another one of those. @@ramzijaroudi1228 Tyler creates musical personalities, like David Bowie. Tyler's Igor, Bastard and Goblin are reminiscent of Bowies Thin white Duke, Ziggy stardust, and Major Tom. Not that Igor and the Ziggy much in common aside from the fact that they are musical personalities, but still they serve a similar purpose
i feel like you missed on the "No need for masks, bust through the door" line. i see it more as a continuation to him plotting to murder the boy and his love interest. he follows the line with "get the job done like retirement, i admit you look concerned." he wouldn't need a mask because he's plotting to murder BOTH of them because the boy chose the girl over tyler. that's just how i see it though, and in my opinion it makes sense lyrically.
shawn x I agree, but maybe Tyler is saying both? Maybe he’s saying, “No need for masks, bust through the door” as in he doesn’t need a mask because he’s gonna kill them both anyways AND he could be saying that his interest doesn’t need a mask, come out the closet and if you don’t then I’m not gonna need a mask when I get the job done like retirement? Just my thoughts
I kinda prefer this meaning to the other, as “bust” connotes that it’s going to be violent, so “busting” through the door to kill someone would make logical sense
In the CD and vinyl releases of IGOR, there's another song. It's called Boyfriend, and it precedes Exactly What You Run From. It's a bop and I think it perfectly complements your theory, you should give it a listen!
Pimp Spice same. it came out when i just got out of a very deep relationship (from my part). first time i ever loved someone. and the same thing happened where they moved on to someone else in a heartbeat and i didn’t think she was a threat. it was right under my nose this whole time.
@@nate2946 Me too, sadly. I wasn't listening to Tyler at the time of my relationship, but only started listening to him afterwards and damn it hits hard everytime lol.
I got to hear it after finally distancing myself from unrequited love, and the first half reminded me of those feelings where the second half helped me feel better going distant
This video helped me understand some of Tyler’s thoughts with the album. I Think tyler is one of those artist that you Will need to listen closely to the lyrics to enjoy it. Thank you for the album, and for the video
This album literally helped me go through a break up and shit from this girl I really love. Even though the album was about a homosexual, it still spoke about what I was going through in a heterosexual frame.
I've listened to this album before but then I fell for a girl and got rejected bc I can't stand keeping the feelings for years, idk I wonder if things could be better if I listened to igor before confessing
I think the line of 3:23 might also be a reference to the Movie "Call Me By Your Name" about a young boy who falls in love with an older man, and when the relationship can't work out (Season 2) He falls apart.
You didn't mention that in the last track, ARE WE STILL FRIENDS ?, Tyler is actually trying to denie that he is still in love with the guy, and he actually try to chase him down and fall in love again, in Igor Theme, wich btw makes a lyrical AND musical loop.
some great editing, I love the sound wave form animation and wanna learn how to do it so bad. Also some of those 3D flips on the text were pretty well done too
It's my favorite album ever. Just becuase IGOR resonates with me in every aspect, right now. It still hurts, but at least we´re friends. IGOR knows. It understands me and gives me a voice and a little bit of relief.
ThatOneGuy yeah, but i see it as an emotional climax until the peaceful and powerful flower boy. cherry bomb is being who he’s been seen as, flower boy is who he is
i just went and listened to igor for the first time after watching this. ive been listening to these songs since 2019 but the story when its put altogether makes it 10x better
Yeah best interest was a throwaway that didn’t make the album. I always assumed it would go after I THINK and before NEW MAGIC WAND. At the end of BEST INTEREST he says “i can play the side n**** role easy, but not for too long.” That goes into NEW MAGIC WAND where it has been too long and he’s fed up with just being the friend on the side. so he decides to kill the girl
I often come back to this album because there’s so much to appreciate and pick apart. Another clever detail i noticed is that the main percussion in “Thank You” is comprised of what sounds like gun cocking and reloading, because a boy is a gun. And the dangerous thing about that isn’t only the pain, but the fact that he never wants to fall in love again.
Since cherry bomb wasn’t talked about, I think of cherry bomb as Tyler’s love project, a project he made just cause he liked it, to fit it in the story, it could be a middle ground, a period in which he’s trying to reach peace, but with sudden outbursts of stuff hitting him from his past, this explains why songs can go from loud to ambient, he later reaches peace in flowerboy which explains why it’s the album before it
Doodie You hit the nail right on the head. And in my opinion, I thought Cherry Bomb was a dope album, the only song I wasn’t feeling at all was the song Cherry Bomb itself. Too much going with all distortion shit going on. But I think Cherry Bomb was the initial change the fans weren’t ready for. Like you said some of his past pops up. But this was the start of kinda a new Tyler. Bastard he was a depressed struggling teen barely coping, Goblin he was now entering fame but not really feeling it and still depressed. Wolf he’s famous as hell and done made some moves but lonely and not fully satisfied and dealing with the loss of his grandmother. Cherry Bomb, he’s moved on. Obviously not completely but he’s in peace with things and acknowledging the joys of being able to afford stuff he dreamed of. Fans who were use to broke and emo Tyler, couldn’t grasp something like “2Seater”, “Find Your Wings” and “Okaga, CA”. By the time Flower Boy comes around we all now know where he’s at as far enjoying life and embracing blessings, that is until another subject comes into play which would be the centerpiece of the album. His sexuality and now here we are at IGOR. Any album after Wolf I think would have gotten the same reception Cherry Bomb did. Lyrically and musically I saw nothing wrong, it was just the overall timing. Things changed.
@@GlobalEnigma64 cherry bomb was a great change from the original three, fans weren't used to the sound yet, though the sound wasnt polished fully until flowerboy
Doodie Agreed. I remember in interviews shortly after it came out, he said people whined to him about basically not being angry and sad anymore and he responded like “yeah dude that was then, but life has been so much better for me now, why keep being upset when things are progressing?” And he is absolutely right. Tyler said in an Drone Interview in 2011 that his main thing was “progression” and that’s exactly what he’s done. Fans who were stuck in that emo Tyler mindset weren’t ready for the change at that time and moment. I bet if they go back and listen to Cherry Bomb now they might feel differently. That album was dope as hell.
Its been a year since i first watched this video, and this was what made me listen to igor for the first time and get into tyler. since then ive found countless new amazing artists and it can all be traced back to this so thank youuu Changed my life and all that stuff

Peggy got that one man
I consider it one of the best of the decade and Im not even a Tyler fan
Personally, I'd say second to Weyes Blood's 'Titanic Rising.' this album is stupid good, though
This album is actually the best composed story he has created. This is my favorite Tyler album because it’s truly just a beautiful, tragic, and healing story about complex and chaotic feelings of a shifty relationship. He truly delivered everything on this one.
Almost everyone was able to relate to this album, but didn’t want to say it
What man had you like this?
Okay Anthony I’m saying this type of relationship with someone, not specificity a male
so true
I sure did
Yet the ending note perfectly fits in with the starting note
Telling a story that never ends, “What you run from is what you end up chasing.
Didn't ending for the story end in him falling in love again and continues his horrible loop of falling in love and getting rejected?

One of the reasons Igor stood out to me as a romance album is because the songs aren't stuck in a loophole, and there is actual progression and closure on the album.
Idk if anyone has also picked up on this. But on my first listen through, when I was listening to “Are we still Friends”, when there’s that “I’ve got to... KNOOOWWW” and the voice gets deeper, I took it as the boy saying “NOOOO”. Thus, rejecting Tyler and the rest of the song is just him begging and pleading. The scream at the end is him realizing that this relationship is finally over, just like that. Idk, it might just be me tho

shawn x I agree, but maybe Tyler is saying both? Best interest would be that prequel that gets released after
hannes no it’s the sequel 9 months after “are we still friends”
Yeah best interest was a throwaway that didn’t make the album. I always assumed it would go after I THINK and before NEW MAGIC WAND. At the end of BEST INTEREST he says “i can play the side n**** role easy, but not for too long.” That goes into NEW MAGIC WAND where it has been too long and he’s fed up with just being the friend on the side. so he decides to kill the girl

Tyler fans are comedy
