Wow, what a superb video. I'm an aeromodeller, about to make hatches for my first ever RC boat, so this tutorial is super helpful! Thanks, from the UK.
Thanks, Gary! Following your tutorial, I was able to build a custom hatch cover for a boat that I "inherited" from someone who had lost interest (he was an avid R/C flyer and superb overall model maker). When I got the boat, it had no radio or servo gear and I had to design and build it all from scratch. Videos online - including yours - helped get me through it. I'm finishing the hatch cover now and it should be operational in a couple of days. One design change I made is intended to help with getting the hatch on and off the coaming - as it is a tight fit. What I did was to sand the inside bottom edge of the hatch frame pieces to form a slight bevel or relief to the edge - vs the sharp/square edge of the 1/8" x 1/4" frame. By beveling the inside edge, the hatch somewhat self-aligns with the coaming and it is easier to get the hatch on and off.
Thank you, Gary. I'm busy building Emma AND I finished enlarging the plans for Annie - she will be just over 2 meters long... I LOVE your boats and cannot wait to work on them when I get home every day - building and planning them is the BEST thing you can do with your clothes on! I am really impressed with the plans and can recommend this boats to anyone - keep the videos coming, I enjoy every minute.
I like learning from others, that are wiser and more experienced than I am. Keep up the good work. I think that I am going to try for a faux weaved look.
I love all your videos and just wanted to thank you for all your hard work designing these amazing sailboats. I'm in process of building one and your videos are very very helpful. Thank you Sir
Thanks Gary, I am just about to embark on the build of an Emma sloop, and I find your videos so informative and easy to follow. I know that with your tutorial videos my build will be on a level I would never have been able to achieve on my own.
A fine video Gary. Though I'm not an RC boat builder, I have used your instructional videos for my modelling. I build smaller vessels as where I live space is precious. The design and sewing of sails was especially useful, though the process very tedious and painful! Thank you Gary. Best wishes, Rodney. Vancouver Island Canada
If you melt petroleum jelly, you can fold the hinge closed and dip the hinge edge/pin in it to get a nice coating to keep the epoxy/glue out. I use the bottom end of an empty soda/beer can with a small candle under it sort of like a chafing dish. Probably not super necessary if you only have two, but if you are trying to install many during the same batch of epoxy it helps to not have to be as exacting.
Thanks for the cool video. I am restoring a very old 48" gaff rigged pond sailer with a mainsheet tension controlled rudder. It is built like a big boat was back in the day. Sawn frames, carvel planked. It has three rigs complete with multiple bowsprits and topmasts. Going to add rc so I can get it to come back home to me. Great tips on how to make the hatch covers fit and hold tight.
I use the same glues above and below water. We must expect the whole boat can get wet. CA (thin & medium viscosity) and Epoxies (5 minute & 20 minute & thickened for fillets) Cheers !
Great one Gary. I always wondered how you did the hinges. Like everybody else, we are all waiting to see what the new boat will be. Another classic I am sure. Pete

Hello! Curious how the scaling up went. Did you have to make any weight or other adjustments?
Thanks Gary, I made my hatch covers this morning following your instructions. They look great!
These small tips make all the difference. Thanks Gary.

A very well paced and informative how to video, thanks a lot. It's such a well thought through construction method 👍.
Great video Gary. I learn from all your videos. Many thanks - and keep them coming!

Always good to hear from you Noel, Thanks for the encouragement!
This is a great idea. I’m going to use this method on a 1 meter sailboat I’m building. Just getting to the deck so this solves one problem! Thank you!
Just learned some valuable skills here today. Thank you Gary
The use of toothpicks to fasten those hinges is fantastic in it's simplicity!
Fantastic. I will do this with the JIF65 I am building. Thanks a bunch.
Great work! I will use this type on my model sailboats.

Well done Gary. Beautiful work and thanks for the tips.

What more needs to be said the simplicity and accuracy are right on.... Great tips that I wii use on my next boat.. Thanks for sharing Gary..

Thank you. I needed info on hatches.
Vert Well explained.
Thanks
Sublime travail 👍
Good tips thanks. What glue do you recommend for above and below water ?? .
I use the same glues above and below water. We must expect the whole boat can get wet.

@@sailtails2775 thanks . I am collecting bits to start a project of an approx 1.4M 2 masted schooner . And I will be using some of your ideas .
Thank you for sharing your building experience and skills! Do you not apply any type of gasket material for waterproofing?
Great one Gary.
I always wondered how you did the hinges.
