I first saw your videos about 3 to 4 years ago when the dark age of Covid and lockdowns kept the world in suspense... thank you very much for your videos, which brighten up my days
Thanks for these extremely informative and helpful videos on scratch model boat building. They have been a real eye opener to me and I am amazed how clever and practical your approach to doing things is.
Hi Gary, a few weeks ago I found your videos about your sailingboats. GREAT !!!! I love the way you are building your boats and the way you present and comment your videos. Actually I do a restauration at a sailing-bota called INGA IV which is about 45 years old. As a young boy I had not the money for this boat. 4 weeks ago I bought a secondhand INGA. Thanks for your tip to make the plankinglines with a ballpointpen, it works and look great. Hope you are well and you will have lots of fun with sailing your boats. greetings from Germany, Michael :-)
Be-au-ti-ful boat, Gary. Will definately order the plans, have to finish Emma and Annie first... Please make us a sailing video! I agree, you are THE MAN!
Fantastic boat and the plan looks very detailed, I am going to order the PDF first and then the full printed plans. From a quick search having the PDF printed in a print shop is more expensive than ordering from Gary.
My friend, don't think like that - ANYONE can build this boats and even if it takes you 2 or 3 years... no talent needed - I build MY boats with hand tools - HUGE fun!
'FLYER' can be seen tacking on her maiden sail at moment 7:48 in the video "RC Sail Control - Rigging a Winch Line" ruclips.net/video/601iP7YPyQA/видео.html I hope to be able to show more as restrictions are lifted in our area.
thats video inspired me search my favourite ship plan and cut frame parts to hull. one meter size LOA endeavour J-Glass race boat, little modificated own size and not to race. next need buy 4mm plywood and cut my DIY cnc machine all parts out off plywood.
I couldn't find anything thin enough to make a boat before covid. I might just have to order some door skins here soon, it's getting winter so it's getting to be project season for me lol
Hello Gary, I'm part way through building 'Flyer' - the plans are great. Looking at your video I think I see that you have put a glass fibre skin on the inside of the hull. Your instructions don't mention that - is it for extra strength or a good finish? Many Thanks
Thanks for asking about this. Sorry about the confusion. Although it appears to be fiberglass cloth, it is not. The plywood I used had an embossed surface on its back side which gives it that appearance. This is not a feature I chose, it just happened to be that way on this inexpensive plywood which was found at my local Home Depot store. The only place I used fiberglass on Flyer is the inner surfaces of the fin trunk and the outside of the rudder. All the remainder of the boat is sealed with clear penetrating epoxy sealer then painted / varnished with brushed on oil based products.
Beautiful, just ordered plans. Are you going to be doing other videos for this boat? Is this made from “door skin “ as well? I can’t get it at the box stores around my area.
I do intend to make more videos about this boat. 'Door Skin' yes, though 'Flyer' is actually made of 1/8" Pine plywood which I just happened to find locally (Mexico). Almost any plywood could be used for these boats if not more than 1/8" (3 mm) thick. Check with cabinet makers in your area if the stores don't have it.
Gary, just before you fix the two side of the fin housing together I noticed there is an area that looks as though there is no epoxy, it's a strip corresponding to where you will glue and fix the sides, can you explain how and why that is please? Do you use a specific grade of glass and how many layers please? Sorry so many questions its just that I want my build to be perfect, just like yours. Martin 😀
The sides are glassed over completely. The strip you see is where I have roughed up the surface with 100 grit sandpaper to improve adhesion when epoxy gluing the trunk together. I use just one layer of glass. It is fairly lightweight, actual weight unknown. It was the only glass to be found here in Ensenada Mexico and the merchant was unable to tell me the weight. The weight is not critical for we are just using it to create a waterproof layer and not for structural strength. Happy boat building Martin, just sent schooner 'Annie' plans your way.
Sorry about the p!!! What I was gonna say was I’ve just brought the plans for Annie and I won’t to add deck planking as I don’t know the scale what size planking would be to scale? Thanks
No problem Roger, 'P' excused. There is room for imagination when it comes to the scale of any of the Bearospace boats. I like to think of 'Annie' at a scale of 1:12 which would make her a 58 foot (18 meter) boat. At that scale, deck planking could be about 1/4" - 5/16" (6 - 8 mm) wide.
I’m curious, when cutting out the templates, do you cut to the outside of the line? Do you then cut the plywood to match exactly the template including the line? Thanks in advance.
Center of line or outside of line - no matter. Use the same technique throughout the project, everything will fit. I cut the templates center of line, and cut the plywood to match the template.
@@sailtails2775 Very good, I appreciate the response. Your designs have made a lot of people very happy. Schooners and Cutters are classic vessels and I'm looking forward to getting mine in the water soon.
Hi Robert, I dab the epoxy in place with a stick or a screwdriver, then trowel it out smoothly with a "tool" which is simply a scrap of thin plywood sized and shaped (rounded end) to give the desired radius to the fillet. You will want to make several "tools" with different radius ends to fit the various angles inside the hull. Gary
Thanks Gary and greetings from England, I think your videos are great and very informative keep up thy good work as a newbie to this boat building hobby I need all the help I can get, will you be able to make a build series for Annie In the near future? Thanks again. Roger.
Easily the best construction video I have ever seen. Plans ordered!

Always good to hear from you Noel, keep building, don't slow down!

Best design yet! With that hull shape, there are a variety of Chesapeake Bay hulls you could build.
Amazing build and beautiful boat!
Fantastic work !
I love it, you are truly talented, it is so fun to look att your videos. Very nice.

Great video. Looks like an interesting project.
This technique is kind of different from mine, absolutely something to learn from. Good work :)

Hello, what kind of glue you used for that fin trunk after fiberglass. CA or Silicon ?
5 Minute Epoxy. Note that the fiberglass is set in epoxy resin, and the surfaces to be glued with epoxy are first sanded lightly to enhance adhesion.
@@sailtails2775 Thank you for reply . Love your sailboats from Myanmar.
what thickness of ply do you use on your models i am making a sloop but a little bit lighter and more narrow than emma
I use so called 1/8" ply for all my boats. Often it is actually not quite a full 1/8" thick.
I’m curious, when cutting out the templates, do you cut to the outside of the line? Do you then cut the plywood to match exactly the template including the line? Thanks in advance.

@@sailtails2775Thanks for your answer. Do you wet the tool with any sort of solvent or use the tool dry?
@@robertrussellmd - I use the tool dry, cleaning it frequently with a bit of lacquer thinner.
