CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Joe (Denzel Washington) declines to take on Andy's (Tom Hanks) wrongful termination suit for personal reasons.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the time of its release, Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia was the first big-budget Hollywood film to tackle the medical, political, and social issues of AIDS. Tom Hanks, in his first Academy Award-winning performance, plays Andrew Beckett, a talented lawyer at a stodgy Philadelphia law firm. The homosexual Andrew has contracted AIDS but fears informing his firm about the disease. The firm's senior partner, Charles Wheeler (Jason Robards), assigns Andrew a case involving their most important client. Andrew begins diligently working on the case, but soon the lesions associated with AIDS are visible on his face. Wheeler abruptly removes Andrew from the case and fires him from the firm. Andrew believes he has been fired because of his illness and plans to fight the firm in court. But because of the firm's reputation, no lawyer in Philadelphia will risk handling his case. In desperation, Andrew hires Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), a black lawyer who advertises on television, mainly handling personal injury cases. Miller dislikes homosexuals but agrees to take the case for the money and exposure. As Miller prepares for the courtroom battle against one of the law firm's key litigators, Belinda Conine (Mary Steenburgen), Miller begins to realize the discrimination practiced against Andrew is no different from the discrimination Miller himself has to battle against. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas as Andrew's partner, Joanne Woodward as Andrew's mother, and Stephanie Roth as Joe's wife.

I would love to see Hanks and Washington make another movie together. They have such great chemistry.
Too bad he's a drunk now lol
Well they’re both absolute legends. They’re Both in the top 10 greatest actors ever in my opinion.
@@ferise1 Who is a Drunk now?
@@ferise1 whos the druni?
@@ferise1 I totaly got your joke mate 😊
Denzel's moustache should have gotten an Oscar.
rob rick ikr
Lol😁😁
Lando called, he wants his 'stache back
lol it doesn't look real
@@innag6888, it's a black thing!
please tell me you understand humour. no matter how dark it is!
Andy handled himself with such dignity it's inspiring
How amazing is Denzel Washington? His fear, disdain, ego, curiosity, intellect and compassion pull him in every direction. As great a performance as Hanks gave.
personally i think it is his best performance and he outperformed Tom in this film in my opinion.
He overshadowed Hanks by a lot.
Schneefernerkopf My friend died today of aids. I was going to visit him today in the hospital, but I did not have time, although I could do it yesterday...Damn,
I did not think that he would die, I could not imagine it, I thought everything would be fine.
@noregrets281 overshadowed ? just repeat that scene where hanks explains opera to denzel and then we can discuss :)
they were both wonderful.
Tom hanks is a good actor playing transition roles from comedy to drama
Without a doubt. His characters change with every movie he is in. Unlike so many other actors who seem like they are playing the same character in every movie.
Denzel should have earned a nomination for his performance.
TOTALLY agree! He was brilliant!
thought so too
I Agree Too
He's not that great. Sam Jackson is better
Santiago Navarro uh no stfu
Am I being fired? That sinking feeling in your gut, that uncertain future that flashes through your mind, the horrible realization that you must start all over again... I know just how that feels...
Hanks provided the heart of the film, but Denzel provided the glue...watching his transformation little by little, and having that bridge of the law to help him deal with the newness of being around Andy, it was so insightful to watch, and he plays it so subtle and reserved...until he's finally ready to let it out in the open in that courtroom, really, really, phenomenal performances from the duo.
Amazing acting by Hanks. Haven't seen him doing something so real, so raw, in forever.
You must have missed a whole lot of Tom Hanks movies then. Suggest you start with "Captain Phillips". The last scene of that movie shows you his "real" and "raw" emotions in spades. Meanwhile, there's also "Finch" on Apple TV (released Nov. 2021), which is one of his best performances of his career.
Mr Hanks, you sure do have the most soulful eyes on earth
Exactly
That's Tom Hanks, right? Every thing he says is a stitch!
"I have a aids"....HAHAHAHAHA
Vertigo lmao
Vertigo I have aids
Hahahaha
I have AIDS...
To one of the greatest in film making, Jonathan Demme greatest strength is capturing the personalities of their characters and gave them body and soul. I frankly don't remember any directors who had this type of skill that could pull the right strings whether being fear or sorrow.
Thank you John...you are still one of my favorite directors from the 20th century. We shall meet again.
RIP
Ron Vawter, the actor who plays Bob (the bald guy) died from AIDS complications a few months after this film was released. He had a few scenes in Silence of the Lambs as agent Kendler (Ray Liotta portrayed Kendler in the sequel).
I can't even begin to imagine how important this movie must've been for him.
Rest In Peace
Hubert Scrumpleskin He was HIV positive, though.
According to Wikipedia,he had heart attack during a flight,
due to HIV virus.
Thanks for the info,by the way.
then in the sequel he was really bald . LOL
I’ve finally realize that I wanna live for The 90’s with Tom Hanks without hesitation. ☺️🙏🏾😔🙏🏾
I never saw this film when it was released because I was working on an AIDS Unit; living the real thing-a billion-fold avalanche of countless patients who were dying left and right, one right after the other. Dying from AIDS was one of the most excruciatingly painful things I’d ever witnessed in my life, starting in the mid-80’s. Most of them were in their 20s, 30s... So young. No one knew then how it was even transmitted. It was a certain death sentence from diagnosis to less than a year later, many within 9 months, because there was no cure then, and the public was still absolutely terrified.
I will say that I will never forget how profoundly courageous and lovingly devoted collectively that the partner would be of the one who was dying; knowing that they were infected themselves. Some became blind from CMV retinitis. So many with Kaposi sarcoma lesions on their face and elsewhere. It was absolutely grueling what they’d suffered.
It completely tore your heart out.
I still have never seen this film.
It’s interesting how the two “minorities” on either end of the spectrum needed and helped each other. And then grew towards a mutual respect towards each other in the end...
Two of the greatest actors of our time
Exceptional acting by both Denzel and Tom Hanks. One of my all time favorite movies.
This movie gets me every time. Incredible film
Until this, Hanks had mostly done comedies. This was his type-casting break into drama
damn at 1:56 Tom Hanks does a good job at looking sick and not only looking sick but talking sick, the whole real feel.
DAMNIT JENNY!
Z Z lmaoooooo this deserves way more likes.
wait i think i miss something important in the movie . who is jenny? from what scene?
😁
Felma Lagos in ‘Forest Gump’ Jenny was Forest’s wife and she died of AIDS. Tom Hanks played Forest
@Dope 138 Jenny was played by Robin Wright, and Lt. Dan was played by Gary Sinise.
tom hanks is so handsome.
utinre nata I agree 100%. He is truly amazing as well!
hanksome
He is but not in Philadelphia
Handmany hehehehe
Ok sorry.
No
I love how they call each other counselor lol
This is a phenomenal movie. Superbly acted by both the main characters and the others on the cast.
Damn Tom Hanks, that stare when he said I have a case is somewhat menacing.I wish he could play some psychopatic villain in some movies
Wait… a movie with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington? Alright, I know what I’m watching tonight.
Tom Hanks is my favorite actor! My favorite performances were Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Captain Phillips, Toy Story, and Polar Express!
Yeah is there anything Tom Hanks can't do????
And Green Mile
I love The Terminal.
Another great character he plays is a lawyer in Bridge is Spies. Very basic compared to other roles but it's a fun historical picture.
Yeah right especially saving private Ryan, Cast Away and Road To Perdition
I need to rewatch this incredible film. Just that little clip there was like a masterclass in acting by Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks, just excellent back and forth there. It was like watching two great tennis pros in the peak of their powers just hitting lasers back and forth to one another. Awesome stuff
Jonathan Demme's technique of having his actors deliver their lines straight down the lens was never more powerful or appropriate than on this movie.
so are they still delivering the lines to each other or are they filmed separately? Do they set up two cameras between them so they can do it live? I'm intrigued..
As an aspiring filmmaker, I always have to keep the shot 'dirty' even if its just a shoulder or a hairline lol getting actors to say lines into the camera just doesn't feel right, but in Demme movies it has an eerie, you ARE the character feel. I guess it comes with confidence behind the camera.
It's a great technique. Surprised it isn't emulated more often. I remember Jodie Foster bringing it up during a talk show, made me smile.
@@GeppettoProductions It's harder than it looks. Demme's inspiration was Ozu and even he didn't really get it right (he didn't care about eyelines at all)
When he said “If you don’t want it for personal reasons I understand” Beckett pretty much proved his point the real motive behind why he was fired. He did serve his client.
We watched this movie again this past weekend. Although not my favorite Tom Hanks movie, it is his best performance. Denzel Washington's journey from homophobe to friend is incredibly guided by Denzel Washington's performance.
"I got it that's the guy from big"
Lightskin Boi Tom Hanks funny guy
everything he says is a stich.
zarachie ”I have aids”
Jynxerz AHAHAHAHA
Tom Hanks was great in this movie
I've never seen a better set of performances in the same film as Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington in Philadelphia. I'm sure there are other examples, but this one sticks out to me...totally character driven film.
i love Tom hanks
Nadeen Gamal same here!
Anyone who has been in this situation knows how much it SUCKS when the lawyer kicks you to the curb😵
This scene hits home, I also have a case...
This is very similar mentality regarding discrimination with the virus of today.
Hanks well deserving of the Oscar. Denzel's performance in this film, fabulous, and over shadowed. But he got his just due rewards later on. Jonathon Demme = Top 20 best directors ever. P.S. What a stellar cast of supporting actors. ALL of them; especially the great Robards.
After watching Schindler's List, I beginning to think Liam Neeson should have won, and it pains me to say it because Tom Hanks is my all time favorite actor.
Mathew Godfrey actually. Hanks was indeed WONDERFUL. I KNOW I will be unpopular for saying this, but NEVER thought he should have won for GUMP. Yes. There. I said it. hahaha... that flick albeit directed by one of my favs... way overrated. i agree with you about Liam. He was stellar... in an absolutely stellar film. Among my top 50 best....ever!
bravaLiz
way overrated in what regards? By your standards? Your judment of Forrest Gump is vastly overrated because 99.99 of the population disagree with you.
Howard Paras I refuse to engage in a cat fight on these sights... but 99.99%? What is the source of these so called statistics? I think you may misunderstand. Hanks is wonderful in too many films to list and I deeply respect director Zemeckis and his innovative way of approaching screenplays.. but I don't go by "public opinion"...seriously... box office "winners" such as the Schwartzenegger flicks et al. mean nothing to me.
R.Z.'s films such as Roger Rabbit, innovative and yes he has been recognized by the Hollywood "Oscar" community.
However, CONTACT and CASTAWAY were "underrated" and,,depending on the award, it's usually about "promotion and politics"e.g. the Golden Globes/Oscars.
I hold more merit in recognition of those awarded by SAG or the palmes d'or festivals, etc.
Hanks portrayal of Gump was a caricature as opposed to a characterization. Also, Sally was miscast. theendandthatisall. :-) p.s. Run Howard...run! and all in good fun. You DO know what Marcus Aurelius said about "opinions."
no i don't but someone once told me that opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. Look, I too don't want to get a meaningless cat fights on youtube but comments like Tom Hanks' performance in Forrest Gump was overrated deserves a response. The stats are just embellishment since you are the first person I met who said Tom HAnks' potrayal of Forrest Gump is overrated. Whether you like the character or not or you think he was just a caricature, he is one of the few movie figures that i can remember that touched the lives of so many (poor, rich, black, white and so on), and will remain for years to come. I am sure there is not one character that Tom hanks has played that impacted his own life more than Forrest Gump. To throw the word 'overrated' in the same sentence with Tom HAnks and Forrest Gump is simply discrediting Tom Hanks' amazing performance, whether you believe it's oscar worthy or not, and simply demonstrating that you can't put personal opinons aside when judging something unpolitically.
The face Tom Hanks make when he leaves that office (not here) broke me for good.
Such a magnificent movie ! The Oscars scene of Tom Hanks was so moving
I was too young to see this when it came out but I need to watch it sometime
I got it that's the guy from BIG. He's hilarious, everything he says is a stitch
I’m a Lawman” my favorite part of the movie Denzel got jokes 😂😂😂😂
I’m a law-suit lol 😂
one of the best movies ever!
I think this is Tom's best movie. He's fenomenal everytime but here he's just outstanding. The scene with Maria Callas music in the background is such a classic that all the words in the world could not described it!
"Oh you don't have an attitude problem"
How the hell would your attitude be if you were getting fired?!
Take it easy, Walter.
Such an important movie, and such fantastic acting.
Fact
Great movie! God bless great city of Philadelphia.
Tom Hanks deserved the oscar for this performance and this made me cry and I hope that Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks do another movie together.
Have they worked together at all in the 30 years since this movie?
Keep in mind guys this movie was loosely based on I think several AIDS bias cases around the country in the early 1990's. Thus a semi true story.
00:51 a page out of Denzel.
Damn Denzel looks so young. 🤣😂🤣😂
Tom Hanks, funny guy.Everything he says is hilarious!
it took this long to find thos
tom hanks looks dope with the 5 o' clock shadow and buzz cut
Just needs sunglasses and a vape pen.
@calo10able Ye
Look at them. Both looking young and beautiful, also great actors.
I LOVE this site! Thank YOU!
Everyone in the theater was crying and Peter Griffin laughing.
Two of my favourite actors great and powerful film
great movie and amazing cast
thank you for your time counselor
Bill Murray or Robin Williams were considered for Denzel's role in this movie.
I love both but I’m glad they were overlooked for Denzel, he was perfect in this role.
The best part of this scene is after its ends with Tom Hanks leaving the office on the sidewalk pondering what's next. How many of us have been in a situation when we think what the hell do I do next? that's the moment of this film in my opinion!
did i cried the first time i watched it??? yes.
do i still cry when i watch it???? for sure bro.
This movie is just Amazing!
Genius to put the best actors in the industry in a film together !
The legendary actor
I really love how they can get the sound out before their mouths open
Heart breaking story, love this movie, a little of scenes a lot of expressions , a lot of emotions a lot of truth thanks to Tom and Denzel.....
I thank these men for where we are today 🖤
you mean firing anyone for not taking the vaccine? it kinda goes against the movie
So much love to this wonderful movie.
Such a great movie!
Happy 25th anniversary to a groundbreaking film.
I went 3 times to see this movie I was very interested in seeing in midtown Manhattan
and each time the place was full and the line outside went around the corner. Forgot the name of that movie but each time I went I ended up watching something else. The third movie I saw was Philadelphia. One of the best movies I have ever seen and one I highly recommend.
sadly these two only have 1 movie together
YOU CAN FIND A LONGER VERSION OF THIS ON RUclips. THIS IS TOO SHORT.
That song Heaven when they are having the costume party. People who have ever felt pain in anyway, this song you can relate to.
Such a powerful film
One of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen
And now he has Coronavirus....
Poon King that’s what I was thinking
He and his wife Rita Wilson *had* it, now they're fine. Andrew Beckett, the character in Philadelphia, had HIV, a much less contagious virus. Sexual contact, IV drug use, blood transfusions, not simple contact like the Coronavirus, with more than 4 million confirmed cases worldwide in less than half a year. I'd be willing to wager there were much fewer cases during the early stages of the HIV epidemic in the same time frame.
Lol i had an ad just pop up the guy looked like the other guy in glasses
Tom hanks looks so hansome with his shaved head
Anytime someone across from you says "Speak to me like a 5-year-old - or a golden retriever" - they know more than you do.
Two of the greatest actors ever!
Amazing film with an incredible sound track
And now we have this in 2023.
so many adoption spectrums of learning in these movies.... discrimination and health and various rights and working conditions... quite amazing really, heart wrenching and levels of uplifting courage... faith in that people are far more good than not so good.
Un bellissimo film
Tom looks much better with short hair and some beard
Demme sure does live his close up shots of people’s faces.
Tom Hanks’s voice is soothing.
The goody guy who was amazing at comedy became a great actor in this one.
Truly special film.
I remember on Family Guy the Griffins were seeing this movie. Lois and Meg cried!
Prejudice sure can take many forms in many places and sickness doesn't care for either.
Awesome movie and actor
Can you honestly imagine a world where a company had no right to fire an employee
yep that would be pretty bad. i hear its like that with teachers unions, tons of red tape just to fire an incompetent teacher
Hanks looks badass with the stubble and trimmed hair.
Time has changed. Today everybody would jump on a case like this.
Max Dugan was so good in this. Now I know where he got all his money from.
