Amazing interview!!! Russell is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. I got to see him live once about 20 years ago and was blown away by a solo rendition he did of The Bee Gees How Deep is Your Love. Simply amazing!!!
Sammy also played vibes, if I recall. Singer, dancer, musician. Great albums with Laurindo Almeida, too! But, Russell Malone to me is the most complete youngish jazz guitarist on the scene! And with Diane Reeves? Squisito!
Great interview Bob and what a wonderful human being Russell is. Such a humble and knowledgeable guy with a wealth of interesting stories to tell. I loved his playing with Diana Krall, so melodic and such a great tone. I must say Bob that for 72 you're looking pretty frickin good.
I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL WITH RUSSELL AT MONROE HS IN ALBANY GA. I CAN REMEMBER HIM SEEMINGLY ALWAYS HAVING A GUITAR WITH HIM AND HE COULD PLAY THE FIRE OUT OF IT WAY BACK THEN AND THAT WAS BACK IN 1982 AND 83. I WENT TO A TALENT SHOW AT THE SCHOOL ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AND WAS REALLY JUST SUPPOSED TO MEET UP WITH SOME FRIENDS THAT DID NOT SHOW UP SO I WENT INSIDE TO WATCH THE SHOW. RUSSEL HAD A DRUMMER AND A KEY BOARD PLAYER AND THEY PLAYED BROADWAY. AND RUSSELL BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE.. WE WEREN'T REAL CLOSE FRIENDS BUT WE WERE FRIENDS.I HAD NOT SEEN HIM IN MANY MANY YEARS AND I THINK IT WAS AROUND THE MID 90'S AND I RAN INTO HIM IN PASSING AT THE MALL AND SAID HELLO. ONCE I REMINDED HIM WHERE WE KNEW ONE ANOTHER FROM HE REMEMBERED ME AND TOLD ME THANKYOU FOR SAYING HELLO. HE IS A WONDERFUL PERSON !!!!!
