- Russell Malone is a Downbeat Magazine Award-winning, Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist whose early work with the great organist Jimmy Smith really put him on the map. He's also toured with Ron Carter, Harry Connick, Jr., and Diana Krall. He's done session work with Brandford Marsalis and Wynton Marsalis, and for a while, was in the legendary Sonny Rollins' band.
He's also a fan of Wes Montgomery. Robert Montgomery asked about his father's influence and other topics when they sat down in an iconic jazz venue in this excerpt for Further Wes Bound. Spoiler alert. We also mention that Russell Malone is part of Indy Jazz Fest this year, performing a tribute to Wes Montgomery.
RIP Rissell.....so sad he suddenly left us.....
Cool! Loooovvveee Wes!!! No one since compares
God Bless Russell Malone
❤Wes and Russell!
Great interview.
These are devoted people.
Russell Malone left us too early. I was so hoping to see him live and I will never have that privilege, but I am so grateful for his recordings and performances and insights in many interviews. Gone but now a jazz guitar legend.
Great interview!
Great interview - thanks for sharing this!
Awesome ❤ Wes is my favorite musician of all time. His style had the greatest influence on me as a guitar player❤😊
I love this content. Thanks for sharing with the world :)
“Papa Wes” and “Uncle Malone” thanks for your music and be an influence on me. Blessings and joy!
I love this chanel so much.
greetings from Switzerland!
Thanks, Neil. Glad you're enjoying it.
I first heard, when I was about 7years old, my mom playing me the album WESTBOUND..with Monk and Buddy..My mom always played Montgomery for me before I left for school..And then later I played Saxophone and I got into Harold Land..
Later in college I met and played with Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour..they were really influenced by Wes...I saw Wes play in 11:16 LA..1967..with the Stan Kenton Neophonic Orchestra
My goof..the album was MONTGOMERYLAND!!
Awesome conversation. I’ve been there at Birdland, in NYC (I saw the Christian McBride Quintet). Thanks for all this fantastic material. Greetings from Brazil.
Glad you're watching.
Yup, same exact experience discovering Wes. Read all about him in magazines, heard from guitar players, yada yada. When I finally decided to check him out, my first taste was The Incredible Jazz Guitar. Immediately, Okay, there is no need process or digest this. What he is playing and the sound of it was instantly satisfying. That's how great he was. There is no "finally" understanding Wes's genius. It's immediately apparent.
Genial, la charla ,wes influencio a la mayoria guitarristas, ademas de ser un interprete genial, tenia incorporado un romanticismo unico, con 2 _3 notas te llegaba al corazon!! Maravilloso recuerdo
Love this channel…..thank you 👍
Thank you. Glad you're enjoying it.
8:00 he did play one bad note, captured at the end of a Daish TV show. He just smiled. It was " Here's That Rainy Day"
