Just a quick extra tip you can do, if you hold Select when you run the TWiLight Menu, it'll open in the original DS resolution. It'll have black bars around the screen now but if you want that original size and clean look as the DS, this is an option you can do and you'll usually forget about the bars after a while you play
Great tip! Do you happen to know if holding select works if you are opening the DS game directly from the Home Screen as well?
@@HungryHungryDude Yes it does work through that method as well! From my understanding, since it technically still does go through the TWiLight menu (just bypassing all selection and loading parts), most of the functions from TWiLight within the game still works!
Amazing!! thanks.
I do this with all my Gameboy games except picross. Wonder how that game would look on a non XL oh god
Best comment. Playing at a 1:1 resolution makes those pixels so sharp. DS games are a blurry mess otherwise.
Dude, LOVING all the love your giving the DS/2DS/3DS lately! I'm getting my first 3DS today!
This was super helpful - I knew the stuff right up till the forwarder, but the fact I can watch and understand what you're doing is a huge leap from where I was last year!
Appreciate the coverage of these jailbreaks. Great, concise, accessible reference. I just did all this in the past month but forgot most of it already, so having it here is nice even if the 3DS hack guide isn’t too hard to follow (just a bit time consuming)
Modding my 3ds has made me fall in love with it again, thank you for these guides
A good Tipp for 3DS XL is the homebrew ftpd, so you don’t need to remove the sd card each time. It’s possible to connect the computer to the 3DS as card via wifi 😊
Is this apart of homebrew or a separate app to download? If so, any suggestions on which is the best or most efficient?
Just know that the 3ds wifi chip is very slow so for fastest experience putting sd card in pc is better
@@Joey-dl6nm Good to know. Thankee.
The name of the homebrew is ftpd. And yes, it’s not that fast but fast enough for the most stuff. On the New 3DS XL you have to use a screwdriver to remove the SD card, and therefore I find the ftp connection much more convenient.
It’s not fast but the ridiculous decision to make the microSD slot on the New 3DS XL accessible only by removing the cover makes ftp an important and useful alternative, especially for smaller files. That back cover does not inspire confidence, and other than the head/eye tracking and extra stick the overall design of the older 3DS XL is really much nicer imho.
Once again thank you for an amazing guide!! I followed your modded method when the Eshop closed. Now thanks to this guide I can play both NDS and 3DS with no issues.
I went a little install crazy when I first homebrewed my 3DS, not only did I get my entire collection onto the home screen, but I got a lot of games I never tried before. I thankfully, don't have that many DS games in my line up, so I'm still below the 40 game limit, but for 3DS games, it's a different story. I do appreciate the Twilight Menu but I found it easier to bypass it with the forwarder. Best decision I made was to Homebrew my 3DS, and now I'm about to purchase an New 3DS LL so I can have access to games for that console as well. It's been fun experiencing new games as well as reliving my child hood. My sister saw my home screen and asked me "How many Pokemon Games do you have on this thing?" and all I said was "Yes" because I have them all, as well as romhacks. I have enough Pokemon to last me for the next three years lol. Really great video, I'll certainly keep watching your channel! And I'll give Zoo Keeper a try too, I love puzzle games like this. I used to play a lot of Bejeweled Twist on long car rides.
Revitalization of our old consoles is always a must!
I've seen these tutorials before, but none were as informative and straight to it. I was having to swap my 'MLB Power Pros' card between 2 different systems, which I had to do so by removing grips, until today. You hit another one out of the park, brother. Thanks!
Wow, i just finished modding a 3ds today and was just researching this. Talk about perfect timing.
Great video as usual Russ, keep it up. It's a joy to watch your uploads
Same lol
Amy updates? I just found my 3ds xl and going to mod it for the first time :D.
@lewcehjitl it's pretty easy today
Yes!! Thank you! I've been specifically waiting for your guides due to the quality and effort you put into each video👍 thanks bud!
I just played both Zelda DS games on my hacked N2DSXL this way, it was a great experience. Others already mentioned TWpatcher for the different scaling options. Also of note, if you hold B while launching Twilight++, it boots straight into the last played DS game, so that's what I did instead of adding the games to the 3DS menu.
Can you explain how to use the different scaling options? I got widescreen to work using TWpatcher, but I'm not sure how to use any of the scaling options.
I use twpatcher with Linear Sharpen 1 and DS games looks a lot better on old 3ds screen!
@@csandrade87 do you also use the widescreen patch?
@@MisterBrodo No. It's possible use only one patch at a time. I don't like the way Widescreen Patch looks.
This was a very easy to use guide and it made saving my old DS games to my system and then getting them to an easy to play format very simple. thank you!
Thank you very much for this clear and simple guide. You truly are the savior of my nostalgia.
I'm so happy I managed to get a 3DS about 5 years ago. I haven't played it much when I got it, so much so that the SD card got corrupted and I had to remod it, but I had such a blast playing zelda, kirby, luigi's mansion, not to mention all those amazing DS games in the past couple of weeks. If you're patient, sometimes it's so worth it getting a console and the end or past its lifecycle.
Loving the 3DS Content Russ! Been looking forward to this video. Just waiting on the GBA guide for it and then I’ll have every Pokemon game from R/B/Y-US/UM in one place!
Your channel is so organized and helpful. Thank you!
One amazing thing I just found today: For me as a New 3DS user it's super annoying to get the SD-card out every time I want to put a new game on my device. But I got an App called FTPD installed on my n3ds through the universal updater and now I can use an FTP-client like FileZilla to move files directly through my home wifi onto my console
Is it work on old 3ds ?? because it didn't work for me i tried to transfer from my phone to an old 3ds
@@gamesfromheart5998 There's conflicting information. Some say it does work on the old 3ds, some say it doesn't. On the new3ds systems it seems to work without issues. But I see how this would be handy to have on an old 3ds even if you can access the SD card way easier than on the new models where you literally need to get a tiny screwdriver out and open the device.
@@gamesfromheart5998currently doing it right now on an old 3ds xl, works just fine with the first app I found on the Google play store
@@marctestarossa Which folder did you put the Roms
@@shanewright2213 there should be a folder called "roms" in the root of your SD card. It contains loads of subfolders for gb, gba etc. I didn't create it myself, because in every sub folder there's a txt saying sth like "put game boy advance roms here". But I don't remember what did create this folder.
Hey man I really appreciate this video I have had twilight menu for some time but always wanted it on my Home Screen wow thanks 👍🏻
Finaly someone make detail doing it i just confused all time when see other content , thanks man
thanks really helpful :) really easy to follow
you are awesome, helped my boi with stuff even i didnt know about! TY!!!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS EASY TUTORIAL!
Just a little extra thing, there’s a master list regarding this, but some DS games can run full screen on the top if you’re into that, some games I feel benefit more than others. Also you can acquire a cheat file from various sources that will allow you to add cheats to basically any DS game.
how???

Thank you for clear instructions!
Thanks this is what I’ve been looking for.
This is amazing. Thank you
I modded my 3ds a while ago and had no idea about the hotkey menu or that you could put them on the home screen. Thanks Russ!
Very straightforward and sinple to understand tysm❤
Amazing tutorial. Process was very simple.
Awesome! I didn't think of putting my dsi's r4 card into my homebrewed 3ds at all!
Now i can play those games without worrying about the state my my old dsi lolol
Thanks a lot!! :D
Russ my dude my man listen i’m sure you already have some sort of translation situation ready for when you go to mod an out of region 3DS… but if you don’t, get google lens or whatever you want for text translation. i just did the mod myself a couple weeks ago (thanks to your 3DS nudge by the way) and struggled a lot with getting my bearings. and this was after having modded two other 3DS’s for my brother and sister. also idk if it’ll be worth it for the content, but i would certainly watch you do the region change mod. i ended up doing it bc a lot of my games weren’t playing in english even if they were north american versions. love your content brother, keep pushing. you’re an absolute doll 💕
Yes! The final piece I’ve been waiting for.
Very in-depth and straightforward guide! Nice work!
loving these videos!
I recently purchased a Microsoft Surface Duo 1 for about $200 for ds/3ds emulation and am just having so much fun with it. All in, with a controller and a stylus I'm at about $300...but the fact that it's a high powered android device on top of it just being a super cool 3ds has made it one of my favorite purchases in a very long time.
Woah they really went down in price fast. I always thought it would be perfect for DS emulation
great video and great instructions
You can disable the TW++ intro which will shave off a few seconds when starting up the application. You'll have to navigate through its settings and toggle it from there.
You can also change the music from that settings menu as well.
I don’t know why you say only 40 games on your screen? I have a lot more than that and if that bothers you you can also group games into files so you can keep even more there. You’re only limited by sd card space which I’ve been told is 265 GB max. I wanted to go with a 512 GB but was told it would be a waste of money because even the “NEW” 3DS XL still had the 2012 sd card reader technology. This is what I was told and what I’ve been downloading over the last 3 days but I’m not a expert by no means. Really like what you’ve you’ve shown us so far and have subbed to your channel. Keep up the good work and I’ll keep following.
@@edwardwilliams188 What he meant to say is that a maximum of 40 games can be displayed on the screen. However, by clicking either shoulder buttons, you can navigate to the next list of games that you currently have on the system.
@@CYPH3RsD0M41N ahh…I see ok my bad, I knew I was kinda missing something there lol. Thank for the clarification.
@@edwardwilliams188 No problem, dude. Have fun!
How to do you access the settings in twilight menu?
I just looked this exact topic up like 2 hours ago guess when I'm out of work today I'll follow this video!
You have always come through for me, brother. I appreciate your videos 100 times out of 10!
One simple way to run DS games is using an R4 ds cart. That will work wonderfully on the 3ds. That also allows you to have a separate storage (smaller SD card) dedicated for your DS games and you can save your main SD card for larger sized 3DS games.
Two video ideas
Using Ultimate VC Injector to inject any rom into the 3DS Virtual Console (any retro system should work just fine up to GBA, barring a few obvious. The program should mention what is and isn't supported)
I've mentioned it a few times, but never got confirmation on whether you were interested in the idea, but a tutorial on using NTR Streaming on a New 3DS/2DS to stream your screen to your computer for capturing footage or having a console-like experience (if you pair InputRedirection with that, you can use any other controller to control the 3DS, so then you REALLY get the console experience. Old 3DS's can't use NTR Streaming, but can use InputRedirection)
I love the topic of the video. Taking an older console and modding it. We need more

Zoo Keeper!!! One of the first DS games I purchased. Love that game! Thanks for walking through this process... I'll be loading it and 25 or so others I decide to rip from my carts!
Thanks for the over 40 guide
Thank you just.. THANK YOU.
I’ve been looking for an easy tutorial like this for months.
Now I can finally play animal crossing wild world and Kirby super star ultra.
Again, THANK YOU SOO MUCH‼️‼️
Ive been looking for that in app reset hotkey thank you
To anyone who hates how ds games look but dont want to shrink the screen, get twpatch. It comes with lots of screen filters and options, none are perfect but they are all better than nintendos default.
Can you explain how to download bro?
Excellent content and information, as always! I'm loading up my favorite NDS games onto my homebrewed New 3DS. Can't wait for the Gameboy Advance video, because after that I'll have my perfect all-in-one Nintendo handheld with me. I'm building mine to have nothing but Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, NDS, and 3DS games installed. It'll be my portable Nintendo handheld museum.
Thank you. My two DSes and games are in my father's house and I don't want to bring them back as it's used by my brother. I have a modded 3DS and I would like to play some of my backlog games. This video will surely help me a lot.
the fast booting into DS games I had no idea about, game changer. FF Tactics A2 lets go!
If you're going to put any of the Gen 5 Pokemon games on your 3DS this way, you've been warned: *They do NOT work for Poke Transporter.*
All I needed to know :/

Same, however… he doesn’t mention where he gets his roms. Can you share where you picked yours up?
@ntwynn did you end up figuring it out?

I have been playing a ton of GBA ROM hacks on my 3DS recently. I found it interesting that with some of the ROM hacks they play great with Open AGB but a few only play through GB Runner2 (from Twilight++) - which works but isn't quite as good of a choice.
You can also emulate 3D using Nreal airs or VR headsets. You can also make a video about that one, it's amazing.
I LOVE YOU MAN THANK YOU
Personally, I really like have an R4 card because it lets me take everything with me in my 3ds, but I can also pop it into my DSi XL super easily.
I'm trying to accomplish this. Do you have any recommended guide? It'll be nice if I can take my 33gb ds games with my 2ds without having to take up space in my main sd or buy another system.
@@lucykaede5863if you haven't figured it out already I think this guide is the best, the R4 official website is pretty decent too
Zoo Keeper 3D is on the 3DS too and in 3D graphic with a trip-out new dual screens control mode.
This helped a lot thanks! Been wanting to play The NDS Pokemon games, but didn't want to pay those prices lol. Thx!
Thanks for this. I wanted to play Spirit Tracks again, but I only had the Wii U VC version and wanted to play it on my 3DS.
Thank you so much
I don't have a 3DS anymore, but I watched this anyway because you make great videos. 😀
This guide is amazing, but I am a bit sad it doesn't cover TWPatch, which fixes stuff like the filter and even adds widescreen.
Well now, thank you for the tip! Definitely checking it out.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH🤗
Thanks!!
Banging content this 👍
Cool. I have a DS somewhere but dk where (never played it) and recently found that at least the first Castlevania doesn't seem to work well to emulate on the RG351P (thanks to needing the stylus for a segment in the beginning it seems). 3DS with the added possibility to play OoT and MM? Sounds really good.
Hi! huge fan here :) just bough a second hand "New 3Ds" and remembered about this guide... but we are missing all other retro-games right? Are you planning on doing them in the future? Mostly thinking about how can I get my Genesis collection working properly. Thanks!
I have a huge DS-3DS collection. Now I have to mod one 3ds of mine, mainly to digitize all of my cartridges.
dear thank you so much for amazing tutorial we waiting for new one for nes and gameboy for 3ds
Awesome guide!!! You rock on all the videos, nice and perfect explanations.
But on the screen comparasion you say 3ds screen better... But some 3ds xl has nice IPS screen , the 2DS XL has a criminal bad looking angles TN screen. In my opinion the best screen for playing DS games is on the DSi XL , the 2D games like shantae or Zookeeper looks big colorful and crisp on it. You can do videos on hacking and CFW on this one, is an awesome piece of hardware.
See you, thanks for your videos❤
thank you!!!
Great video Russ, how about mentioning the wide screen ds games hack and the limit for games on the 3DS home screen is 300 including system apps. :)
if all you have is a 3ds, fine. but if your goal is to play ds games definitely just get a dsi xl and mod it. you can make it autoboot into twilight menu. the screen will match up perfectly and they will always be ips screens. it's also the best way to play gba, gb, and gbc games.
I bought DSI XL in 2018...the screen is definitly impressive...benefit of this is having 3ds library + Ds library all in one
Subscribed!
Thank you for this. I modded my 3DSXL awhile back but couldn't get it to work with any R4 cards for DS games. This is now the Nintendo superfan system to have!
The reason was probably the R4 card type, they've made ones that are 3ds compatible now
thanks my guy
Currently, after a year of this video being uploaded, this guide still works perfectly! Thanks man!
Do you know where to find the ds roms? I've been looking but can't find any anywhere
@@theswagman271 sorry for the late response! Vimr’s Lair is basically the go-to place for ROMS for a ton of video game consoles (up until around the 2010s)
@@Winner164 oh sweet thanks man
I grew up with the DS family of systems, my boyfriend wasn't able to play one as a kid. We're going around trying to find games we want to try - Huge pain in the ass since the eShop shut down. Jailbreaking shouldn't be the only way to reasonably play games I used to have as a kid, but I'm not going to pay $300 for a copy of Pokemon Black. Huge thanks to you and the entire DS modding community for preserving the fun I remember having as a kid, so people who missed out are able to have the same.
Awesome! I’m gonna try this myself with some of my hacked and translated roms. Is there a way to play NDS games like it’s an emulator with save states?
Thanks for the guide! For some reason the Twilight menu crashes my old 3DS, but it works just fine in my New 2DS XL.
I wish you would include information about stuff like cheat menu and mods z like widescreen mod, your opinion on it etc, to make it a more complete, go to video on this. But I didn't know about nds forwarder and I have only one nds game so it sounds perfect. Thanks!
I wish I knew about this before I bought a custom DS Lite brand new. I ended up getting a hacked 2DS, and it's incredible.
The transition from the DS to 3DS when he ate the mushroom was top tier
Thanks
I have a 3DS with this set up but I still use my RP3+ for DS despite not having two screens and the second screen being tiny.
Why? Fast forward! The DS has an amazing JRPG library, probably one of the best ever if not THE best, so speeding up those games is worth it for me. Pokemon especially is hard to play without it.
Russ, are you still planning another installment for retro gaming on the 3DS or did I misunderstand how many videos this series would be?
nice video
I love zoo keeper haha, used to play it with my mom. I play the mobile game a few times a year haha
Tip for everyone. I discovered you can move the files around on the 3DS itself using 3DShell, that way you don't need a PC or even to remove the SD card! ;) You dont even have to rename anything.
This is a very useful video, but I'd like to point out that if you want a large, integer scaled DS experience, the DSi XL is brilliant. Being part of the original DS line of systems, it obviously has a 1:1 resolution for DS games.
It can be softmodded quite easily which is worth doing, especially if you plan to run emulators. It's pretty good at GBA and even runs a lot of the SNES library to a satisfying extent.
Idk if I'm understanding your comment right, but did you really just say "For a good DS resolution experience on 3ds you should just get a DSi XL instead"?
@@tydshiin5783 No, not for use with the 3DS, obviously. I was merely highlighting that the best way to natively play DS games on a large screen is on a DSi XL, because of its large screen size and 1:1 screen resolution. I didn't once mention the 3DS.
Hey your videos have been very helpful but I had a question. I’ve watched your other video showing all the different ways to put 3ds games onto your 3ds Home Screen and when doing cartridge to 3ds you loaded godmode, Went into the cart and installed the image file. My question is can’t you do the same with ds games to the Home Screen rather then using the nds forwarder
God bless r4 cards work in 3ds. I bypassed all of this stuff
Great video! Super concise and helpful as always. And the intro song makes me smile every time I hear it, such a banger!
TWPatch has custom scaling options that I've found much better than the stock Nintendo scaler.
Please also cover the wide-screen hack for nds games, a big game changer.
Oh, Ace Attorney Investigations Miles Edgeworth! There is a fan translation of part 2, which I really enjoyed! In fact, I loaded it on my Anbernic RG505 this week.
For some reason, I couldn't get DS games to launch on mine. I manually updated the 2 nds files in the SD root according to the wiki and got it to work. Another good guide nonetheless.
