Chad… we are the next to the last house on our electrical grid run. As a result… momentary outages are frequent and longer interruptions due to weather are really long. We wired a portable generator to the house supply. It is set up with a transfer switch and can power all the essential switches. It got a lot of use until about 5 years ago. Then our utility upgraded all of their meters to have digital readouts and internet connectivity. So now, as soon as the power goes out, the meter notifies the source. Last month I contacted them to report a power outage. While I had their contact on the phone I asked her, “Has the meter already reported the outage?” She replied, “Yes. We have 240 meters out of service.” I asked her, “How long would it have taken to determine how many homes were affected, before they upgraded the meters?” She said, “Maybe a half hour. We used to have to send a crew out and have them look for the cause. Now we know where to start instantly.” And that explains why my generator has only had occasional use recently. While I had her in the phone I asked her if it was necessary to call in an outage. She said, “You are welcome to call. But, unless your meter is the only one affected, we will always know it before you call.” As I was digesting that she added… “If only one meter goes out, we don’t send a crew. We call you to confirm before we react.” So, the whole calling in an outage is just a Customer Service and ‘Feel Good’ relic of the past. However, I’m still keeping their number in my contact list! Isn’t technology amazing? Thanks for the tips… I need to get a UPS for my internet!
I wired our house for a generator (via safety interlock) about 5 years ago and since then the power hasn't been off longer than a few minutes...once for about an hour! Good insurance I guess!
That's the way to do it. I always said that if we spent big money on one of those diesel generators which would truly power our all-electric house - there would likely never be another power outage in my lifetime. :)

I wonder if the Jackery 300 Explorer would be strong enough to power a refrigerator. I'd have to check the volt rating, but it would be great if it did. No more spoiled food during outages. Olive likes to have a celebrity appearance in most videos. That APC UPS is a lifesaver when working from home. Our power flickers pretty often. It's great to not get kicked off of the meetings. I don't know about powering a refrigerator with the Jackery 300. Maybe the 1000 version? I think the compressor probably uses a lot of power when it kicks on. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Don't throw good $ at Jackery -bad battery technology. Instead buy a Bluetti EB3A, the battery technology has almost no fire hazard/explosion risk and is only $209...did I mention a much better recharge cycle count to it will last you YEARS longer...did I mention the fast charging technology or the phone app? In an emergency it can charge in 1.5 hrs from zero to full. Did I mention wireless charging for your phone? No one in the know buys Jackery anymore. It can take 200W of solar so it'll recharge in the sun with solar power in 1.5 hrs with a 200W solar panel.

Id just use a jackery as ups and leave it lugged in
