MN has the top dense. That says nothing about Rudy’s impact on that defense. So you look at the stats, such as team defense with him on the court versus off the court which was the point of the post that you completely ignored just as you ignored all the defensive categories in which Wemby dominated the league (which includes Rudy)
@@ccdccd8615 MN has the top defense because Rudy brought that mindset to the team. That they do as well as they do when he is off the floor is a testament to his effectiveness as a defensive leader. A team's defensive success happens because of all the time spent outside the games, including practice, film sessions, etc.

Exactly! it's an individual award, it is how a player play defense, block shots, steals, lock down an opponent and even intimidate other offensive players and that is how Wemby did, and not coz Wolves are the best defensive team, it is freaking individual award..

They gave Gobert the award because Wemby is a rookie and they dont like giving rookies major awards always been that way. The record is just a excuse they make to not vote for Wemby but at the end have nothing to do about record. Bet if the Spurs had a bad record next year Wemby will win the award 100% over Gobert or anybody in the NBA which will push that notion of someone having a bad record cant win DPOY out the door. Larry Bird led the celtics to the number 1 seed as a rookie Kareem won MVP not Bird why because Bird was a rookie.
This was the time for the NBA to reset who wins DPOY, where it goes back to being an individual player award! Who cares about the team defense??????? When it's called DPOY!

And we’ve seen now what the wolves look like defensively without him in the first two games. With him their rating was 106.6 without him it’s 107.3 (-0.7 difference). With wemby the spurs are 111.2 without him they are (-6.1 difference). He had almost twice as many blocks twice as many steals and +3.1 EPM to Rudy’s +2.2 and still lost it to him. The spurs are top 5 defensive with Wemby and bottom five without him. Stop it. Minnesota has a thing by Edwards and Mike Conley both defensive good players. Jaden McDaniels is an all defensive team caliber of player. Naz Reid is a good defensive player. And kat when he has his mind right and is working on the defensive end has shown he can be a good defender. We’ve seen it in the first two games with Rudy. He can block shots and play good help defensive.

And Wemby would be alot better than Mutumbo. Imagine how easy it would be for Wemby to block shots just camping in the paint all game with no defensive 3 second rule. Wemby would easily average 8 BPG if he played in the 90s.
Rudy actually held opponents to a lower field goal % under 6 ft. So that’s the most telling stat to me. Not blocked shots. Contested shots, and deterrents are just as important.
He held people to the lowest field goal percentage because his team is better at defense. Wemby has to worry about multiple player at 1 Gobert do not he just have to contest 1 player Wemby have to worry about 2-3 players.
A team's "defensive energy" is more important to their success than the defensive stats of a single player. A player who is an offensive force of nature can have some success carrying a team. A player who is a defensive force of nature can lead his team to the fifth worst record in the league.
This little lady is SPOT ON!!! She has backbone to say what she said. Defensive player of the year is a joke.
This will only make Wemby go harder and get in the lab to improve his defense even more. Itll have the opposite intended effect for them to the point where they’ll have no choice next time.
I hate the comparison to MVP voting where team record matters. MVP is almost always given to an elite offensive player, and defense comes into play when multiple players have comparable offensive stats. In NBA basketball, offense is WAY more important to winning than defense. The league rules are made to make offense easier and defense harder, and elite offense always leads to a higher net rating than elite defense.
So an elite offensive player with average defense can carry a team to the playoffs, or even a top 3 seed (like Jokic), whereas an elite defensive player with average offense cannot lead a team anywhere on his own (like Wemby, except Wemby has pretty good offense on relatively low efficiency). So with Wemby, his elite defense and above average offense cannot take the Spurs anywhere when his teammates play like absolute trash.
"Elite individual defense" is a myth, nobody defends in a vacuum.
It's not called Defensive team player of the year! The NBA just simped out and didn't have the b@lls to give him both awards! Just make it known that rookies aren't allowed to win DPOY or whatever other awards they deem not fit for rookies!
It's also called the Most Valuable Player, and everyone knows the team's success is a factor.
This take is a shame. I love Wemby and I love Rudy. They are french like me. The disrespect on Gobert is a shame. If a male journalist said the same things about WNBA players that this woman said about Gobert, she would be creating a scandal.

Why don’t they change it from DPOY to DPOY on a team with at least average or better team defense because that is what it is. Basically, you can defensively walk on water and you won’t get this award unless your team defense is pretty good. This is BS!!!! And my prediction is that Wemby will use this snub as inspiration to tear the NBA a new one in terms of defense.
'Individual defense' in basketball is a fringe idea. The offense will simply find someone else to attack.

It's not an individual award, because 'individual defense' doesn't really exist in basketball.
Wemby gets caught out of position to often. Gobert affects his team better.

Wemby has flashy individual defensive stats, but the other team can easily find other players to take advantage of. Rudy brought a defensive mindset to the TWolves which created the best team defense, helping their record.

Rudy is the DPOY. You first have to build the foundation to get a high-praise award like the DPOY. Building a culture around defense is the most important thing in basketball to win a championship. Rudy did it by being the leader and anchor at that end, and now we're seeing the fruits of two years of a reconstructed team winning playoff games as a defensive team.

They never bring up the fact that the Spurs “experimented” for like 30 games and had Wemby out of position and had him on minutes restriction, you think that didn’t affect their record?!?! Look at at all the stats and play AFTER the Spurs started playing “correctly”!!! That’s when their season really started! And these are the “experts”?!?! I’ll give them their expertise on the game, but they suck at detective work!!!
Saying that he was in a minutes restrictions doesn't help your case. It just means he wasn't there when the team needed a stop. If he stayed more, then maybe he could have won but this award isn't on maybe or ifs now is it.

The team should be better, he should be able to influence the defensive mindset of his teammates (especially with Pop as the coach), and he will have played a greater percentage of the total minutes, increasing his effectiveness.
