Seriously miss when TV was bold enough to have a show thrive on a brilliant script. Some of the best Seinfeld moments were nothing more than a long conversation.
RedYellow Blue This one is one of the most brilliant script of the show. Was all about masturbating, making fun of the subject, but letting clear that is a natural activity for men and women. But the magic touch is that there's any mention of the word "masturbation" or anything sexual, but they use a lot of expressions not related at all to sex to say something sexual, and you get it, and it's fun. Genius.
I think Golden Girls was the same. Despite most of the trio's conversations revolving around sexual relations, they _never_ used the trigger words and danced through the topics with such grace that we knew _exactly_ what they were talking about, without them saying a straight word. The sheer beauty of subtle scriptwriting.
Couldn’t have said it better I don’t get why people don’t get the massive genius of Seinfeld, it’s like every moment was the same but different at the same time all based on dialogue, that’s life
Funny story. The day after this episode aired, my wife and I were at a Sizzlers on Wilshire Blvd. There at 4 in the afternoon was Jason Alexander at the salad bar. The show at that time was still on Wednesday and it's ratings were in the 30s. So he could still marginally engage in normal activity. We gushed about how much we loved the show and how amazed we were that they let the episode air. He was very nice and said that they too were shocked that they got away with it.

This was arguably the single best episode of Seinfeld. The writing is superb, and the acting by all of them is awesome. Each of the four main stars shine throughout this episode.
The brilliant thing about this episode is that they never once use the word "masturbation" or even any of the common euphamisms for it. All of the dialogue is always two steps removed from any direct mention of masturbation while still making it perfectly obvious to the audience what they're talking about. So good.
Never watched Seinfeld until this episode happened to be on when flipping channels. Greatest episode in the series that made it a phenomenon and changed tv history. Can’t believe this originally aired in 1992
The two very best parts of that episode are this clip of George telling the story when his mother caught him masturbating alone while reading a glamour magazine and when Kramer slams down the dollar claiming "I'm out!
What about when George visits his mother in the hospital and right next to them there was a hot nurse giving a bath to a patient. George reaction was hillarious
I love Curb at least as much as I love Seinfeld, but I think I'm glad that the Seinfeld writers had to work under broadcast-network restrictions, as it forced them to become creative in ways that brought us scenes like this one.
Yeah, network censorship rules usually make comedy more bland, but sometimes they actually force the writers to come up with creative workarounds that make the jokes even better. What makes "The Contest" so genius is that they wrote an entire episode about masturbation without once ever directly mentioning masturbation. The humor comes from the gang constantly dancing around the topic and letting the audience fill in the blanks. If they'd written this episode for like HBO with no language restrictions and just explicitly talked about masturbation the whole time, it wouldn't have been nearly as funny.
Even after a week, the cracks start to form. After three weeks, it’s too excruciating to keep it up any longer. To anyone that can last a month, I admire your willpower.
Back when George was giving his case for the apartment, I hadn't seen the episode where he tried to sneak the marble rye up into Susan's parents apartment using the fishing pole. So when he said "And there it was, the marble rye hanging from the end of the fishing pole...", I thought he was refering to THIS moment using euphemisms
