    Jess didn't leave a more stable life for personal growth--she caught her boyfriend cheating on her and appropriately left his ass.

      It was her leaving a more stable life for personal growth - some people would try to save a relationship no matter what, and breaking up with a long term partner and moving in almost in a dorm does look like a step back in life, even tho it also appears like a good choice to me

    I think a Schmidt character study would make for a great video essay; specifically how he exhibits a different type of masculinity than what is typically seen in media. The charismatic, sex-driven side of him is paired in equal measure with his more effeminate preferences, e.g. his sensitivity, honest emotions, love of "the finer things" like quality shower products and haute cuisine, and of course his open and brotherly affection towards Nick. I feel like in a way, Jess and Schmidt are something of kindred spirits, in that he too embraces this part of himself without ever a second thought, and forcefully rejects the more toxic, outmoded notions of manhood. I believe the show directly addressed this in season 2, episode 8

    New Girl definitely feels to me like a beginning of an era rather than an end. And it doesn’t feel like they are clinging to childish ways, instead, it brings up an acceptance that just because you’re an “adult” doesn’t mean you have to have your shit together and be all serious. You can still be weird, colorful, moody, awkward, goofy, dumb, cute, and dorky. It crushes the looming presence of an expectation that has been pushed on us our entire lives. It gives me hope for my future, with a sense of knowing that, even if I’m not perfect when I’m older, I’ll still be okay, and I can still be happy.

      right? its nice to know you can still like kawaii cutesy things well into your 20s and 30s. the show kind of exaggerates it with jess' character but its perhaps helped in normalizing people in their 20s/30s enjoy stuff that's traditionally for teens. like the amount of kpop Stans in their 20s/30s feels like a relatively new phenomenon. a decade ago, you'd probably get judged harshly for decking out your office cubicle in photo cards and cutesy anime memorabilia...but its a norm now. I always see tiktoks of 20/30s showing off their office setup.

      That was the first episode I watched. During the super bowl all my friends wife at the time could talk about was new girl. I don’t blame her the was the infamous Denver/Seattle super bowl. Sadly my friends, and his ex wife didn’t have the best marriage, and she disappeared after the divorce which was the right choice to make. She will forever be the reason I got into new girl lol. Sadly my friend got into heroine before his marriage, and became an absent father, the mother is someone else. I had to eventually cut off contact, one of the hardest decisions I had to make. I check up on his daughter with his with his family weekly. Man she looks so much like him, and it kills me inside knowing what he’s missing out on. Thankfully the mom found a good guy who seems to really care about the daughter. Sadly things just aren’t getting better. I know he’ll pull through, and I hope he knows it isn’t him I hate, because I love him like a brother. I just can’t keep seeing him ruin his life. I’ve had my addiction issues so I know he can get through it. I can’t lie though everyday I worry I’ll find out he passed away. Sorry for the rant 2 year old post. Just needed to talk about it.

    Jess is a realistic take on how the "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" would actually be in real life, as supposed to how a lot of films write the character. While Summer is a male love-interest's depiction of the MPDG - unattainable, cool and quirky in acceptable ways, Jess is how that would play out in real life - someone who is genuinely weird and sometimes "too much" and not always accepted. The message of New Girl shows us that, even if she is not the perfect MPDG we see in films, there is ultimately a lot to gain from that "imperfect" yet unapologetic way of living, and that you do not need to tone your quirks down to be just as desirable to the people who end up really caring about us.

    • @funkyfranx
      @funkyfranx 2 года назад +5

      I don’t think you got the point of Summer in 500 Days. She’s meant to be a subversion of the trope. She’s the manic pixie dream girl that doesn’t want the protagonist. She’s a girl living her own life.

    Personal development NEVER has to end in life. At any given point - you should change, adapt, and better yourself. That is what makes life exciting and worth living. The goal of bettering yourself doesn't stop in your 30s or ever, as long as you keep changing!

    In defense of Zooey Deschanel, her persona manages to both deconstruct and reconstruct the manic pixie girl trope. You can't really fault her character for resembling the trope when that's kind of the point of reconstruction. I think it's important to remember that just because we perceive someone as inauthentic doesn't mean they are.

    • @cianap.281
      @cianap.281 6 лет назад +58

      That's true, the whole point of the manic pixie dream girl is that MPDG is portrayed as awesome to date. But (even though she's model-pretty, kind and relatively together) the show makes the point that Jess might actually be kind of difficult to date and definitely has her own shit going on. Sort of like the end of Breakfast at Tiffany's (the manic pixie dream girl mothership).

    • @erincooper7588
      @erincooper7588 6 лет назад +65

      Totally agree. As a character, it's shown time and time again that Jess is flawed in many ways, and no other characters see her as faultless (the way Tom saw Summer in 500 Days). In fact, Jess' personality and feminity are often a point of criticism and used against her. I really like that New Girl portrayed Jess' brand of intense feminity as both her strength and her weakness, and though she may grow and improve, she won't change for anyone.

    Great show, but I still hate that they pushed the idea that growing up means getting married and/or having kids. There are many who grow up, but do not have or even want either one of those. There are many different ways to grow up, and the media should began to embrace this.

    • @Ray03595
      @Ray03595 6 лет назад +235

      I think I remember reading somewhere that the creators didn't initially intend for everyone to end up with a pairing, but thats just the way it turned out. At least it all felt natural, and I wouldn't say they all "grew up" just because they got married and had kids. Nick and Jess end the show unemployed in fact. They have grown up but are still the same people from the beginning of the show (except Winston, which is a compliment)

    • @Stathio

      Yeah, when neither of those things apply to you and it's constantly pushed as an expectation of 'maturity' it gets old lightning fast. Getting married/having kids is maturity for some people, for others it's completely different things, and it seems off that those are the primary things focused on in regards to maturity in the media.

      You "hate" that they chose monogamous commitment and raising children as indicators of growing up? Statistically speaking, how many people do not attempt to do this throughout their life? I guarantee it is a very small minority. Evolutionarily speaking, doing so is one of the most fundamental components of our very humanity. Perhaps the characters could bask in a millennial wonderland for the rest of their lives, where they criticize everything that doesn't fit their exceptionalism? Seems to be working for you just fine....

      It kind of makes sense for Cece and Schmidt, she came from an Indian background, even if it didnt feel like it, we know from her first wedding that she embraces the culture, and how traditional it is and she wants her mother to be proud (we know this when she hides that she is with a white guy) Schmidt was the one with the most stable career and said in some episodes how he imagined a family with Cece, so we can say that both had a strong desire for a conventional family. Winston and Abby, im not sure, i feel like they neglected Winston for so long, and it just started to become something when they found the police / Abby plotline, and Nick and Jess totally made sense that they are still figuring stuff out.

    I was glad Jess's character quickly settled into a less adorkable and more just dorky character because the mega-cutesy "can't say penis" thing was annoying. After that the critiques of her character feel off because she is usually "the responsible one" in terms of day to day life adulting and arguably the least childish character. Naively optimistic about other people, yes, but juxtaposed with a never-to-be-opened box of decades-old collection notices, aspirations to be a living Axe commercial, and ... Winston, the show doesn't present a, "adorkable manic pixie dream girl" as much as a group of strange cartoonishly immature people. Also all of them are great physical comedians.

      I feel like she only took on the responsible character around season 6 and that was a coping mechanism so she didn't have to deal with the struggles in her life. I think the responsible character gets juggled around often. Sometimes it was Schmidt running the loft and yelling for them to be adults, sometimes it was Coach telling them to grow up emotionally. Sometimes Nick even got insightful and laid some knowledge. I do agree that for the most part, they were all really immature though but then again, that's where the extended adolescence comes in.

    • @cianap.281
      @cianap.281 6 лет назад +26

      That's true, "the responsible one" was juggled around (I haven't seen season 6 yet). I don't generally enjoy the dynamic where there's a smart one and the other one has a bucket stuck on his foot, or an immature oafish husband + beautiful motherly wife, so I enjoyed how they shared the immaturity on New Girl.

    • @cianap.281
      @cianap.281 6 лет назад +11

      That's funny, because the "millenial stereotypes" you mentioned remind me of young Baby Boomer stereotypes (in the 60s) and GenX stereotypes (in the 90s). "Kids these days, studying impractical things and exploring life in an open-ended way," complained every older generation ever. BTW backpacking in Cuba sounds so cool!
      Yeah I think New Girl definitely exaggerated accurate traits that a lot of people that age usually hide or worry about, and can look at and say, "yeah, I can see myself doing that... in private." Or "man, I wish I could still do that." Like, they have the sort of every-man strangeness but just exaggerated, as opposed to Kramer or the cast of 3rd Rock from the Sun, oddballs whom the average audience were meant to observe more than identify with.

    • @alepolait
      @alepolait 6 лет назад +18

      I think is two different things, she was a classic "mama hen", caring for everyone and wanting everyone to be their best and looking after them, But that is not the same as being a responsible adult. She did what she could because that's the way she was, so sometimes compared with the others she seems more put together, but she is also a mess. A caring mess, but a mess.

    Kind of tangential, but I will never make sense of the criticism of 500 Days of Summer. It's explicitly a film about how waiting for a manic pixie dream girl to make your life perfect is a naive, adolescent, idiotic fantasy that you have to grow out of if you're going to become an emotionally mature, fully functional adult who is capable of actually forming a connection with someone. It's not just a deconstruction of the trope. It's the equivalent of pouring kerosene on it and lighting it ablaze.

      THANK YOU. It's like people don't realize that the movie is about Tom and the way he sees Summer. We only ever see her from his perspective, and we're drawn in to this idea of her that he kind of creates for himself, only to see how out of touch it was. It actually reminds me of Dickens' Great Expectations in that sense. Different opinions are fine, but people saying it reinforces the idea of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl are straight up misreading the text of the film.

    • @alepolait
      @alepolait 6 лет назад +109

      That's literally what everyone complains about. But she was entitled to do whatever she wanted. Ok, let's say that after dating Tom, she found someone that she really wanted to be with, what was she supposed to do? "Oh sorry, i know we are perfect together, but i told to this other guy, that i wasnt looking for a relationship, so, would you mind to wait a unspecified amount of time, until that guy (the one i have nothing to do with anymore) feels its appropiate for me to want a relationship?) That's the whole point of the movie, Tom was dating this image of a girl, but she wasnt that, she was her own person, and we never get to see her side of the story. It's a literal story of a guy so immature that gets mad at a girl for not wanting to be with him. Don't be that guy.

    The video calls out lens-less glasses like they are something Jess wears as part of her quirkiness. This really bugged me for some reason. I would think a channel that talks about movies and TV would have noticed that lens-less glasses is something regularly done in movies and TV, likely to avoid awkward reflections and glare from stage and camera lights. Her glasses sometimes do have lenses and the show has mentioned Jess' need for contacts and glasses. Pay close attention and pretty much every character with glasses in anything is missing the lenses in at least a few scenes. Similarly you can tell that most cups carried by characters are empty by the way the actor holds and moves and drinks with them, doesn't mean the characters are carrying around empty cups just to have something to do with their hands.

      I agree. They are completely different. I see Jess as quirky but Summer as the cool person who is unattainable. Also, the obsession with Summer reminds me of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind where Jim Carey's character wants to be defined, given purpose by Kate Winslet's character (the quirky girl), and she says to him...I am just another fucked up person--basically, she is a real person with real issues and not a symbol.

      Eric oung they were both similar in the quirky “manic pixie dream girl”(ugh), way. Beyond that though the character of Summer was way more cynical and realistic. It’s been awhile since I’ve watched the movie, but I think it was her parents divorce that made her not believe in true love or something like that. I did appreciate though that 500 Days of Summer acknowledged that Summer was very perfect looking, with that montage at the beginning. You can give Zooey a weird or quirky personality, but she’s still going to look like a beautiful movie star.

    • @SC-rt7bq

      They're like opposite of each other, Jess would like try to change Summer. And hate the fact that Summer doesn't believe in love. Or Summer never acts weird. That's the difference. Summer was the cool girl, Jess was the weirdo. They are both quirky, but in a whooole different way. That's why Summer was considered manic pixie dream girl. Whereas Jess is the complete opposite of the manic pixie dream girl. And unlike Summer, she was hiding nothing, she was an open book all the time.

I want space to cook and watch tv in my underwear dammit. It's strange that our parents' generation were either living with a partner or by themselves at this age and we're living with friends and roommates well into our thirties. Obviously, there are financial reasons for this yet we're docked as being immature.

    Honestly, there's no genuine similarity between Jess and Summer in any introspective manner. When first meeting Summer, she could almost be considered a nihilist, compared to the naive and literally singing Jess. While, they both are "quirky" in some respects, the way in which they express it is very different and is based on widely different meanings.
    They are practically polar opposites in character.

    I love this channel and this video. My only issue is that this video is defining adulthood by being married and having kids. It's not just a personal opinion, but rather a fact that maturity and marriage and family building aren't necessarily connected. In fact all studies show the younger you are when you are married the more likely you are to divorce. Having children younger ages you sooner and shortens your life expectancy. Not to mention the idea as a whole is heteronormative and capitalistic therefore not inclusive so can't generally be applied.

    • @Ray03595
      @Ray03595 6 лет назад +10

      I think they were saying this in the context of what society expects of being a real "adult", which is all those things. Fortunately we're beginning to see people break out of these norms and redefine adulthood.

    • @cianap.281
      @cianap.281 6 лет назад +18

      Very good points! I've always defined adulthood/maturity as knowing how to do your taxes and disapproving when you see young people riding bikes without helmets... but that's not exactly as appealing as marriage and children, and heck I don't even want kids. But yeah, sad to say I've known some married parents who had not yet reached maturity.

    • @Stathio
      @Stathio 6 лет назад +31

      Absolutely! Every time marriage and having children was mentioned as milestones of maturity in this video I thought 'Well, I certainly don't want either of those things, and never really have, so where does that leave me?' It's literally just an 'expectation' of society at large, rather than a genuine point of maturity.
      Hell, it really is super heteronormative and exclusionary as well, whether this was the intention or not. That aside, though, this was a good analysis video overall!

    • @trarue1879
      @trarue1879 6 лет назад +19

      +St. Rhinocéros I dare say that some people I feel rush into marriage and/or parenting to appear to be more adult or just because they have nothing else going on and nerd to feel successful. Those are the ones that have major midlife crisis and when its time to face those decisions after the effect has worn off and evaluate them it comes in a time when it will likely ruin a lot of lives. If children are involved it just creates another person with trauma. I dare say the most adult thing you can do is wait until you really know/love yourself to enter a relationship, regardless of your age.

      Tell me about it Tracy! Case in point, my parents got married right out of college. So long story short my 5-year-old self was a witness to one hell of an ugly divorce!

    I can't explain with words how much I love New Girl

  • @Nikki-oe7gr
    @Nikki-oe7gr 6 лет назад +270

    I found this video to be pretentious. The narration tries to make the viewer think it's being deep, yet it's very superficial. The comparison between New Girl's Jess and Friends' Rachelle completely ignores that Rachel came from a wealthy/privileged upbringing and Jess most certainly did not. Also, the recession didn't magically stop impacting people, and this video seems to imply that millennials chose to extend their adolescence by not getting married and having kids sooner due to emotional maturity issues. Actually, most millennials who attended college are drowning in student loan debt... notice, I say ARE... they were went the New Girl first aired and they still are. Also, countless major companies have gone bankrupt in recent years with the CEOs and those in power walking away with obscene amounts of money, while the workers are out of jobs and in some cases their pensions have disappeared. The economy is still taking quite a toll on various generations, and millennials have gotten screwed the most because if they did what you're suppose to do and go to college to be an effective part of the work force, they are being crushed by debt. Back when former Vice President Biden went to college, he played $243 to do so... College was 94% cheaper for Biden's generation, home prices were 60% cheaper, rent was 40% cheaper, and he minimum wage had 33% more buying power. Our country has had on going wars for the most of past couple of decades... people are signing up for the military to get college funds or to pay have health insurance, then if they are severely injured in the military, often they are left holding the bag for bills because the V.A. is overwhelmed. I'm now pushing 50 years old and the economy still makes things tough for my family, but we're better off than if we would have come of age in the millennial generation. The whole extending adolescence shtick in this video implies a choice to do so, when the millennials have had much of their choices taken from them by an economy largely screwed up by babyboomers'. Nick while working a full time job doesn't have health insurance to get a lump checked out. Regardless of the ACA, there are large portions of today's population who don't have health insurance because they can't afford it... or if they do have insurance, it still may not cover what is needed to live a healthy life, for example obscenely expensive prescriptions if a health crisis arises.
    Getting back to "New Girl" specifically, I think the show will hold up well over time due to good writing. I'm sorry it's over, because I think there is more compelling material there. The NG writers know how to write for an ensemble without playing favorites, and they know how to write relationships without mean-spirited tropes like the Ross/Rachel chronic bitching 'we were on a break.' Nick and Jess were not a couple for most of the run of the series, and yet, they never went out of their way to hurt and belittle each other. Though their break up was essentially the result of relationship growing pains, not knowing what comes next when conflict arises, especially since neither had experience in functional romantic relationships, they still displayed an emotional maturity, because while were both broken-hearted over the break up, they talked on the phone to help each other deal with the pain because they were still friends. That's an emotional maturity that surpasses what a lot of people of any generation have, and certainly surpasses Ross and Rachel's periodic tantrums about each other.
    While this video is not without some merit, I found it incredibly annoying for the above reasons, as well as the use of "Adorkable" in the title, because using adorkable makes people think something cute and amusing will be contained within... This video wasn't cute and amusing, and on the serious angle it took, it was woefully ill informed.

      I just want to say - I love that you, not being a part of the millenial generation, are really making an effort to see their perspective. I know a lot of people who are demeaning about millenials and those even younger for their perceived attitude of not growing up quickly enough, yet refuse to see their point of view and options in our society, just because, well, because they are older and not in the same position.

    Thanks for this! I loved this show. I think that, as with Friends, the extended and close ties between these people also serves as a temporary surrogate and healing period for family structures that might've hindered development. As with every individual, you inherit both strengths and weaknesses from your family dynamic. With New Girl, we can see sometimes the isolated nuclear family has broken apart; or the father figure has abandoned the household; or the family are immigrants with different social norms that children find hard to live up to, given their first generation experience, etc. The friendship, even though seemingly adolescent, is a useful bridge to help the individuals in the group face fears, challenge themselves and eventually grow up. It's a sweet show and overabundance of emotions (even though melodramatic in nature) is what I think made it special.

    New Girl is one of those shows I've never seen but would probably binge watch the entire series on Netflix if it was put on. In 2011 there were polls about what show would be the most culturally significant and fondly remembered by future generations. In those type of polls most people said The Big Bang Theory, I said The Middle (because it was still fresh back then) but I guess we've all been punked because it was New Girl.

    I don't think millennials need more time than their parents to mature; I think we're just more honest about not being ready. Our parents were expected to marry, pop out babies, and take on boring jobs to support it all whether they were ready for it or not. Millennials be like "uhhhhh. No thanks. Sounds miserable. I'm gonna figure myself out."

I want something I could watch with friends and family and alone as well, something I could enjoy when I'm bored, I'm happy, I'm sad, something I could watch while eating and not have to worry about missing some important plot point...
