I'd keep any Toyota over a Tesla.

different strokes... my garage is pretty well aligned to every type of driving need; pick-up, suv, electric daily, and a toy. econobox not required as cool as it was.

@@omgautosYes, if you keep at least one ICE/ICE hybrid in your stable then an EV would be a cool addition without having to depend on it for every situation.

Spot on review. Love the fit and finish coming from Japan. The rev hang kills it for me so I’m upgrading to the GR Corolla. I have 25k miles and still getting 23500 is pretty decent.

GR Corolla is a completely different animal in spite of the resemblance to the normal hatch, I'm sure it will be an experience!
Having said that, the tuner crowd and aftermarket have already taken solved many of the shortcomings of the regular Corolla, and for much less than cost of the GR over a normal hatch. (Of course no AWD) Short shifters, egr delete, throttle response adjusters, cold air intakes, downpipes, exhausts and even flash tunes that can take the 2.0 over 200hp with the right mods. Of course none of this matters to people still under warranty or not into modding, but I think the Corolla 6 speed manual will be extremely popular in the tuner community for many years to come....as will your GR Corolla! I hear that little 3cyl turbo is overbuilt and quite stout..as in they can handle 400hp without serious modification.

I’m been driving my GR for 3 weeks now and I have to say it’s a completely different experience from my XSE. The car feels almost as quick as my Cayman 4.0. It’s a great daily and gives me the giggles every time I drive it. People wave, give me thumbs up, and come up to talk to me about my car more so then my Porsche Cayman. 😅

True about the Japanese manufacturers. So why a Tesla for just speed? They have had some weird problems, so need to be more perfected, but just my opinion. Good you got a good trade in. Thanks for review.

lucky you bought yours when it was cheap!!! i paid 28k for a 21 in 22 when the cars were all crazy high lol... but i was set on the color and getting a 6spd i wanted so i was willing to overpay!! and 9k miles in 2 years!! thats insane!!!! i put 40k on in a year!

great car regardless. 6speed was a must. my wife wanted blue with black roof, but none to be found, so went with this combo. worked out, as i haven't seen one like it yet.

i wanted the blue one so bad i ended up over paying just to get it.. ended up being 30k in the end. the dealer wouldn't even sell the vehicle unless i bought the stupid addons like ceramic coat and lo jack which was an extra 2k. this was during the height of the chip shortage where dealers were taxing! :\ but even still i dont regret it.. i love the look of the car that much! i could have bought a 6spd base model for 25k but the base model had a complete different vibe.. it felt cheap @@omgautos

I always wondered what would be a situation where you would have to "get up and floor it" lol like unless you're on a track racing, what is the need for speed....no one cares. Thanks for the review though

Try a short freeway onramp with a semi right there. It’s not about outright speed, it’s about the car doing what you tell it to right now.

I can't think of a more contrasting ownership experience going from a slightly underpowered manual transmission Corolla straight to a Tesla Model Y. Having said that (and yes I know this will seem crazy to some) I'd choose the Corolla. I've ridden in 4 different EV's (and driven my bosses Model S a bit) and while the experience is cool, I think (and know from anecdotal evidence) that cool factor wears off after a couple years and heaven help you if you get an EV with issues.😮 I mean sure the Model Y and any luxury/near luxe EV is going to blow the Corolla out of the water for acceleration and cool features, but unless you're one of those people who leases or trades in every 3-4 years...your expensive Tesla today will seem old hat and behind the times in a few years as Tesla and other EV makers release the latest and greatest. The Corolla on the other hand will still be reliable and driving like new in 10 years...and since ICE production is being legislated out of existence there likely won't be much advancement for newer ICE economy cars.
On the other hand if I had a 1k mile round trip road trip to make I'd trust the Corolla to get me there and back with no drama. My second car ever was a 1985 Toyota Corolla GTS (American AE86) which was a survivor ...all original with just under 50k miles on the clock, and I bought it just as the fast and furious thing was taking off but 80's cars werent outrageously priced. When I finally sold the thing I had 189k on the clock with only work done being water pump and timing belt, and both were preventative at around 70k miles. Yes, the original factory clutch was still on the car at 189k. It was getting a little weak but still worked fine if you adjusted your shift style😂
