    Thank you so much for these how to videos. I have searched high and low and could not find anything to actually show how light boards are set up and used. The manual was no help in this way. So thanks again -- you just saved my church's Christmas programme!

    Thanks a lot - terrific help. I have 10 LED Par 64's purchased at different times and I've found a couple have different responses to the various faders. Not a problem but confusing at first. In addition, most of my lamps have 10 toggles and toggle No. 10 must be on before I set the addresses as per your instructions. Took me a while to work that out. Now it's all great, so thanks again.

    Thanks a lot!
    I got a mixer with a probably machine-translated manual telling me absolutely nothing. I agree that this is a new language.
    Funny, I figured a bit out, but you certainly cleared a lot up! Thank you.

    Great stuff. New to DMX -- I wanted to set up my controller so I could have banks of scenes that were just moves, then banks of just light changes. So for example, I could trigger a move to a certain position, then trigger a lighting condition for those lights. That way I could get different effects for the same set of positions, more efficient than tying the colors/gobos etc to the positions in each scene. BUT at least on my controller, I can;t turn off the channels or sliders that i don;t want and just send messages to change lighting; so for example, I trigger the move scene and the lights all go to their position, but then when I create a scene that just, say, turns up all the reds on slider 6, all the other slider positions are sent regardless and the lights jump to a new position -- so I have to copy the position scene and add the red slider which defeats the object! I hope this is clear -- seems to me it would be useful to be able to just send an individual slider value or set of values in a scene. What say?

    It doesn't matter which order the lights are in, as long as the cable goes in a chain from one to the other, and doesn't make a loop.
    It does help to know which lights are on which channels though, so keeping them in some sort of order is sensible.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  14 лет назад

    @FlightSimPro5, most LED PAR cans like these will have a mixture of red green and blue LEDs, each controlled by a fader. To create other colours, you simply mix the three levels. So having all three up creates white and so on.
    Some lights use RGB tri-colour LEDs, which have all three colours inside one LED housing, but they tend to be more expensive.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  14 лет назад

    @01Carmaster, they're called LED PAR cans. A traditional PAR can, as used in theater, stage and TV, would have a large glass high wattage lamp called a parabolic aluminized reflector (PAR). The new LED based ones replace that lamp with LEDS but in the same housing, so they're still called PAR cans although the PAR is gone. :-)

    Thanks.You help a lot.The only bad thing with these lamp is a bit smaller output, but all other specs.like lifetime, colourmixing and the most:power consumption makes us a good deal of buying that.The only problem is money course our eurolite par 64 rgb led 10mm models costs 115 eur and you need at least 8 of them.Good instructions, keep on

    Yes, it can be used to control any light that has DMX. The DMX/Y that I use has controls for pan and tilt so that you can control the position of moving heads.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  14 лет назад

    @jaymcinney, it depends on the controller but yes - on some you can trigger a sequence from a MIDI note.

  • @groovindj

    They are Stairville LED PAR64s from Thomann in Germany. I am happy with them. Much more versatile than using filters in front of filament lamps.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  17 лет назад

    You connect them in a chain. You can see each light has an input and an output. Out from the controller, in to the 1st light. Out of the 1st light into the 2nd, and so on.

    explaining lights can be so confusing! hehe, i just played around with the desk and learnt that way :) oh btw i love the way your camera defracts the light :) they should use defraction more in lighting, its a cool effect

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  13 лет назад

    @19Simpsons93 the function of the first fader wil depend entirely on how the channels on your lights are assigned.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  17 лет назад

    There are many variations of this controller from different companies. You can get a clone from Thomann in Germany for under £80. It will control any standard DMX lighting fixture.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  15 лет назад

    No, you can connect as many lights as you like - same with any DMX controller. The limitation is with the number of channels it can handle, compared to how many lights need INDIVIDUAL control.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  13 лет назад

    @NewBornProduction11 no you don't need a "dimmer box thing", just a normal DMX controller.

    A chase is a sequence of scenes, like a cartoon is a sequence of still pictures.
    The scenes have to exist in order to create a chase.

    You can get wireless DMX but it's fairly new and not cheap. Most people simply use normal three pin XLR DMX cables (although the official standard is five pin XLR).

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  15 лет назад

    I guess you have more than one light on the same DMX channel, or a channel that is controlled by the same scan button.
    Make sure the channels you use are set far enough apart so that the lights are controlled through different scan buttons.

    That's a Numark D2 Director. It's an MP3 player. I made three videos on it ages ago.
    It's connected (to my audio system) but it's not related in any way to the DMX controller.

    Just watched your vid as I was expecting DMX to be a pain but you`ve convinced me to go that route.
    Up until now I`ve used the fixture auto or sound programs.
    Will DMX give me better controls and can I still use sound activation.
    I don`t want to keep fiddling with dip switches.

    Hey, great tutorial. Helps a lot. Do you know much about the audio in on a dmx controller? What can you do with it and what type of cables do you need to get it running?

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  15 лет назад

    Let me think - er, yes you are correct. Just bear in mind that there are only 8 faders, so you would have to switch 'level' in order to use them as faders 9-16.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  16 лет назад

    Yes, DMX is only what controls the light. The power can come from mains, battery or whatever and is separate from the DMX signal.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  15 лет назад

    Hi Alex. The answer will depend on how many DMX channels the PAR64s have, and which controller you're using. Also, do you want all the lights to do the same, or for each to be different?

  • @mattd28
    @mattd28 17 лет назад

    good information, explained very clearly

  • @groovindj

    @Ugrillo93, there is no mixer in this video, it's a lighting controller.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  12 лет назад

    Well if you're comparing to pro level discharge lighting then LEDs are not quite there yet, although they're getting closer all the time. From my DJ point of view I like to see fixtures getting lighter and smaller, instead of weighing as much as a small child.

  • @groovindj

    @TheEd500, if the fog machine has a DMX input.

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  11 лет назад

    I assume you mean "board", but what do you mean by "set your lights up"?
    Are you asking about setting the DMX channels, or connecting the DMX cables, or something else?

  • @groovindj
    @groovindj  14 лет назад

    @videoboygeorge, you need to read the manual that came with your controller. That will tell you how your controller works.
    I do not know which controller you have, so I cannot instruct you.

  • @cassnate6259
    @cassnate6259 13 лет назад

    Is there a way that I can set up a scene using the method you described, and then set my lights so each fader matches the channel?
    For example, say I want all red lights, so I create a scene where my 10 LED Lights are red. Then, can I set up the board so that I can use each of my faders just to dim the corresponding light, as opposed to controlling all of the colors, etc?

  • @groovindj

    I might of worded that wrong. I have no issue much with LED's However I find Conventional Bulbed lights alot easiyer and get a stronger light out fo them. LED's are great for Small shows However I just see more use in Bulbs as the quality of the light is much more. Also Recently I've been using Magic Q Desks, so that might also change my choice...

    Hi Groovindj,
    Great video. Helps me alot. I've got the Showtec Scanmaster 1 and 4 led Pars. (pas56) One thing went wrong. If I want to make a scene, and put my first Par to Red, push out the scanbutton, and push the fader, that Par, where I put out the button, stil reacts on the fader. So, to make scene of different colors wont be possible. Mabey you know what I did wrong? Thanks alot.

    But you have to turn your answer around for this.
    So if want chanel 5, your answer is:
    00000101, you turn on switch 1 and 3...
    If you want channel 27, your anwer is:
    00011011, you turn on switch 1,2,4 and 5
    If you find it hard to do the calculation yourself,
    google for "binary converter" that wiil do the
