Norton Jubilee, Navigator and Electra - easy ways to tell them apart.

  • I am no expert or rivet counter, especially where these machines are concerned, but here are some easy ways to spot whether a 'Lightweight' Norton twin is a 250 Jubilee, a 350 Navigator, or a 400 electra model, with some basic tell tale differences discussed.

    They had the right idea with these machines as an "entry level" to the Norton marque. The Roadholder front end would have been a great bragging feature, like having Ohlins suspension on today's bikes.

    Good information on the different models. My mate Rony had a 1966 Jubilee lovely bike if i hadn't lost my provisional license due to my eyes because i wouldn't ware my glasses I'd have bought one 💭🤔👍😉😀😁🏁🏍️🛺🐑🇵🇭🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    People at Norton wondered what kind of puffer needed an electric starter on such a small bike.

      That and the indicators were to show they could do what what the Japanese were doing with all mod cons. It’s not that a 400 needed a starter, more the available starters were only really able to spin a 400. It was twenty years later before a big twin was available without a kickstart ( bonnie executive)

    Had the same gear spring problem on an xl 250 honda. Had to completely strip the engine clutch and box to get to the spring. Give me a brit bike any day. Great channel Paul.

    Separate barrels on 250s, one piece on the bigger ones.

    Many thanks for the video, very interesting. I have had a Navigator since the early 70s. It came with after market mudguards as it had been rebuilt after an accident. I have been looking for Navigator replacements without success. Could you tell me what alternative Norton mudguards would fit. It sounds like a Dominator mudguard on the front and a Jubilee mudguard on the back would be correct.

    Francis Barnett, James, went out of business. Not a wise choice. The weaker companys were dropping like flies. Takeing bigger companys with them.

      Francis Barnett were consumed by AMC in the 1940's along with James motorcycles and as such continued in production until the mid 60's when Manganese Bronzed took over and AMC went out of business. Sad times as I always regard the AJS and Matchless motorcycles to be the best designed and made.
