    At the end of the day, Tanner owns this mess. Muschamp was a "panic" hire from the beginning. Spurrier left the program midyear and we were one of the first school's searching for a head coach. The search list included the likes of Smart, Herman, Fuentes and Riley. None of those guys panned out as other jobs became available. Afterwards, we were one of the last schools to hire, and Tanner went to Auburn and got Muschamp, who had previously flopped at Florida. In his defense, he did pretty well at Florida his first 2 years, primarily because he inherited Urban Meyer's players. He then proceeded to drive the Gator bus over the cliff and Jeremy Foley had to ax him. Tanner gave him a shot at redemption but the pay raises and contract extensions were never EARNED!!! Ray was a great baseball coach but he is out of league as an administrator. The writing has been on the wall for Muschamp ever since Virginia beat our brains out in the Belk Bowl. Make no mistake about it, this firing would have never happened without General Caslen. He is a leader and a winner. Better days ahead for Gamecock football. More than likely, Tanner will be replaced soon. My 2 cents.

      @lionelkennedy1394 3 года назад

      Exactly right. Muschamp was a 'last resort' hire and we scraped the bottom of the barrel when we brought him here. So many good candidates passed on USC and Tanner had to get somebody.

    I was against Boom coming in as HC. Tanner dropped the ball. I tried to like Boom, but it is clear between him hiring his old staff from Florida, and getting embarrassed by Virginia, it was the beginning of the end when he came here. We got lucky his second year, but it is clear that he is not a head coach. When we lost to Virginia, I started to turn on him and wanted him out. I saw him coach against Clemson in 2019 not to get shut out. He didn’t even try to coach to win. He got all of his big money from sucking as a head coach, and not coming close to earning it. Tanner, and Frank are next.

With that said, I'm looking forward to a new head football coach with fresh ideas as to how to make the Gamecocks more successful and competitive in football. We can not overlook the long lasting effect this will have on Ray as our AD. He has had to fire Holbrook and now Muschamp. He’s apparently had a huge amount of love for them both, but the main item is winning and progressing. For him to chew it up and swallow the love and make these changes for the betterment of programs will lead him to be a strong AD. It is a business and you have to leave those feelings on one side when dealing with axing people you truly love. He knows what he is doing and I’m proud of him for being in the chair he is in. I would NOT want to be that guy on a bad day.

    When your best Saturday vs Missouri ended up being an L, you need to reevaluate recruiting reevaluate technique reevaluate your whole entire staff. Also as a director you need to reevaluate yourself as well even though you don't coach football you are hiring the people to come into South Carolina to coach football. The program needs building and the program needs a coach that as resources good enough to get the right players in also the right staff in. You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself what about South Carolina is attractive to make young men want to come play here. Do we have the right coaches and the right culture and play at least. Remember you are not a program that has a winning tradition year-in and year-out.
