@@beckyweisfeld6977 there was controversy specifically in Portugal amongst the people over the speculation that a portuguese couple would have been arrested for neglect because leaving your children under 5 alone in an unlocked space in a foregin country is obvious neglect. The only reason they got away w their neglect was because they were a rich European anglo saxon couple.

Mr. Sailor: "If the parents were lower class" then it's unlikely they would be on a costly holiday at a foreign resort, so your premise is out the window. But I'm not writing to insult you or troll you because your opinion is obviously popular among the commenters here on RUclips. It remains, sadly, my opinion that so many commenters seem to blindly castigate the parents and not the Fiend who committed this atrocity. One of the reasons this story resonates with so many people is the unspoken and frightening fact that many a caregiver has behaved similarly, if only the once. What parent has not walked out of the nursery - or even the house - after getting the little ones bedded down and asleep, just to get a few moments of quiet after a full day of caregiving? That's the scary bit because we've all done it. So if it's OK to walk out the room, how far becomes too far? Ten feet? One hundred feet? Perhaps those who have never cared for little children will not understand this argument. [And please, before commenters begin to type furious rebuttals, my comment is NOT meant to minimize or excuse the mistake this mum and dad made because it was, in hindsight, a tragic mistake.] Yet intent is a significant aspect to understanding this incident. Does any reasonable person truly believe this couple consciously thought "We're about to endanger our children by leaving them alone but, we're hungry" as they stepped out for dinner? And yes, they did not lock the door. But the only way to know if a door is unlocked is to approach and directly interact with the door and give it a turn or pull. None of us were at the Portugal resort were we could appreciate the environmental circumstances that apparently lulled these parents into a sense of safety and security within the compound. Instead of uber-analyzing the actions of these tragic parents, future commenters should focus on the actions of the child predator that murdered a small innocent child.

Yeah, I'm not buying it yet. WHO is the world, especially educated Drs, would leave TODDLERS alone in a resort, in a foreign land? Most adults are well aware that is frowned upon in the comfort of your own home. Do you they sleep with their doors open at home? They must, because a foreign land sure doesn't heighten their senses. The parents need to spend a substantial amount of time in prison for their wanton and disgusting neglect of their 3 children. Typically, I would not verbally attack parents who had lost their child to murder, because as a parent of one adult daughter who I would gladly give my life for if she needed me, I cannot fathom the loss of her, but the fact that they left the door to their hotel suites of their and other “parents’” unattended babies unmotherfuckinglocked is more than troublesome to me. Those children were offered up as human sacrifices to some sick bastard who gladly accepted their crude offer. That is sickening to me. They had lots of money, but only a little concern for the health and well-being of their children. Forgive me for my crass language, but those fucking people bother me.

  • @amattes1960

I know I would not have left my children alone in a foreign country however I'm reluctant to judge the McCanns. A friend of mine took her child to Spain and the babysitter betrayed their trust and abducted her son for a child trafficking ring. The criminals were caught and the child was rescued before any further harm could befall him. I had no idea that European countries had such a problem until she told me of it. But it reminds me also of the European backpackers who expect to be able to hitch-hike safely in Australia. They can't. There's too much space and uninhabited bush. Ivan Milat murdered 7 backpackers before he was caught. Each country has it's own peculiar dark side.

If I were a detective in this case, I would look for a connection between the restaurant and any of its employees to Brueckner, who may have acted as accomplices to his burglaries at the resort. If there was a pattern of robberies while the victims were dining, and a correlation with OTHER dates of other burglaries, with similar calls received on his phone, it would be a convenient way to have easy access to unattended condos and hotel rooms. The wait staff, reservation taker, or cashier could easily elicit that information from a diner.

Thank you so much for saying this about the German court system. I am a law student and I have seen such mild sentences for even child rapists. One got out of jail after 5 years after sexually assaulting a number of small children. And this happened repeatedly. I’m so sick of this court system here. Sexual assault and rape crimes have such low sentences it’s unreal. When a refugee raped a young woman after talking to her briefly in a club at night, the judge said that because the woman previously talked to him and because the man hadn’t committed any previous crimes the rapist only had to spent one year in jail. The refugee man was only in Germany for a few years. No one knows if he raped women in his home country 😄. Just the fact that someone hasn’t raped someone in 3 years is good enough grounds to have a milder sentence is unbelievable to me. And the neighbors even heard the woman screaming „no“ during the rape. Somehow that wasn’t enough evidence for the judge.

Wolters declared Breuckner guilty of murder 3 years ago and talked about concrete evidence and also said if you knew what we know you'd believe Breuckner is guilty. And yet 3 years later no charges have been made against Breuckner (even unrelated charges appear to have been dropped) and this concrete evidence is yet to be shared with anyone even the McCanns or Scotland Yard. Bizarre!

Someone could come in the front door and take a child while you were in the back yard. There is a different perspective in other countries and they could see the door from the restaurant. Yes, they made a terrible mistake, but parenting norms are vastly different outside of the USA.

@@wombatnumbat989 they could not see the door from the restaurant. Over the years, many people have argued that things are different in Europe or in England and so on and so forth. The times were not so different. It wasn’t the fifties or the sixties. It was 2007 and in a foreign country. I live in Greece and here the vast majority of the people would never leave the door unlocked and they definitely wouldn’t leave a 4 year old and two 2 year olds in a house alone. Even if your mind doesn’t go to kidnapping, it goes to all kinds of accidents that could occur when kids that cannot protect themselves stay home alone. But, I do agree with you with the thing that you might be implying. One can never know the poor decisions that he could make, until he makes them. Still, leaving those kids alone, drugged and unsupervised is very irresponsible, especially since the hotel had a nanny service.

They may not have made good choices, but there is nothing to say they didn't love those children. I haven't actually been to the restaurant (have you?) so I am not sure what they could or couldn't see, but from what I read I got the impression that they could see the apartment. Where I have visited in Greece is not at all as safe a place as where I live in Europe. There are many variables and the nicest places have bad parts of town as well. Yes, they made poor choices and I'm sure they've regretted their decisions every single day. It's a horrible tragedy and I feel they've been unfairly vilified for years. Their daughter was a victim and they were victims as well, even if they did wrong. I was once at a small party and we were generally in the front room and on the front porch... 2 guys came in the back door and stole everyone's bags/keys/wallets. Yes, it was a lapse in judgement that the back door was unlocked but it doesn't mean people deserved to have their stuff stolen. Whatever poor decisions they made, they didn't deserve this and neither did the girl. It's a tragedy. People tend to blame the victims/parents because it reassures us that it could never happen to ME/MY FAMILY.

As usual, this was a very well done and informative analysis of an interesting case. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I love to watch your videos!
I'm neither an expert on the judicial system nor the area of mental health analysis & treatment in Germany. But as a German, having lived in Germany for the most part of my life, I know some things about and have had my experiences with both. I think you're 100% right in viewing both areas critically. I think, we have great troubles with our judicial and executive branches. Maybe due to our history, we are rather liberal, and our system always gives the potential perpetrator the benefit of a doubt. Sentences are usually rather easy. Especially with more severe crimes, such as manslaughter or rape, sentences over here are often shockingly low. In comparison to U.S. standards, German law-and the way it's being executed- is extremely soft. Clearly, there are good reasons for this humanitarian approach, but in many cases it can bear considerable danger for the community. And it certainly sends out the wrong signals.
Also, according to the authorities, there's always a severe lack of personnel on every level, which causes a lot of problems and neglect of responsibility in many areas.
Same with the mental health branch. From my personal experience, there are not nearly enough people or institutions to deal with the challenges at hand. Also, the level of knowledge and expertise leaves very much to desire and is generally outdated. As far as I'm concerned, Germany is a mental health wasteland, and it doesn't surprise me one bit, that the authorities weren't equipped to analyze, categorize and treat Christian Brückner according to his true personality and his well recorded criminal history. It's a shame.
On a side note: As a dad of a 2 1/2 year old, it's beyond me, how a whole group of allegedly educated adults chose to leave their little children unattended at night in order to go out drinking and having dinner. Priorities.

I just wonder how long this nonsense with Christian Breuckner can go on for. It is two years in June that Wolters made the extraordinary public claim that Brueckner was a 'prime suspect' in the Madeleine McCann case and since them nothing except more ridiculous media accusations against Breuckner. Anyone who has studied the Madeleine McCann case are aware that the McCanns know exactly what happened to their daughter and where her body is. At the moment Wolters and the German authorities are looking like right prats!

Feel compassion for the parents who although highly intelligent, failed in good sense in practical child protection. Could it be they thought 'this could never happen to us'?, Heartbreaking for them to realise they failed to protect their precious little girl. People saying not leaving a 14-year-old alone is extreme but in the UK, although there is no law set as to what age a child can be left alone, it is recommended by the NSPCC that children under 12 should not be left in the home alone at all and children under 16 should not be left home alone at night. I have also read comments saying that in Europe attitudes are different and people do leave their children home alone. The McCann's are British and should be aware of the above guidelines. It is not normal behaviour in the UK to leave young children alone! I personally don't know anyone that has left a child younger than 10 alone for any length of time, let alone infants.

Your 14 year old probably hates you. That's smothering behavior.
What happens when they want their drivers licence in 2 years? You gunna insist on sitting in the passenger seat wherever they go. What about in 4 years when they go to college and move into student housing? You gunna move in too?
You think you're bragging about what a good Mom you are but you're really just showing everyone what a toxic parent you are.
Let your teenager be alone for 5 seconds.

On May 4th 2007, a McCann family member told the press, that the noisy, metal window shutter, had been "jemmied" open, which gave much early impetus to the abduction story. But when the police found there was no evidence at all of this forced window entry, the McCanns decided to then say that they left the door unlocked, which they never initially mentioned. But the McCanns still persisted with the difficult, time consuming, noisy window departure story, by the "abductor", which makes no sense with the unlocked door entry.

So I live in Alabama , there are cases here where a poor mother left her children alone to go to work . Still doing all the same things such as checking on the children frequently. They all went to jail for neglect. The parents are ultimately to blame for all of this . Yes the actual perpetrator needs to be held accountable but so so the parents and I am pissed off that they have not

Two of the McCanns friends also doctors, had earlier gone on holiday with these friends and had said they were very concerned about the way these children particularly Madeleine was talked about in graphic sexualised ways. They refused to go with them again. They also were bathing each other’s children. .The strange men in the area is an idea that is completely new. Someone looking like Gerry McCann was seen by an English couple carrying a limp child a few hours after the reported missing child. There are many elements to this that you are not aware of DR Grande. If you tune in to Shaun Attwoods channel, he and Sonia Poulton have all the information..

I don’t think there is one thing that could be said or done to the McCanns that would match having to live with the mistake they made. God willing, Madeleine is at peace now. Her parents never will be. My wish is that the crime will be solved and the McCanns will be left alone.

I am German and I can assure you that the justice system over here is indeed generous. If you get a life sentence for example, you most likely will be in jail for 15 years and that's it. The prisons also offer a lot of rehabilitation programs and therapy and education. While on the one hand I think it's good to try and bring people back into society, on the other hand I think it is wrong to give them multiple chances again and again, especially when there are crimes against children involved. We also always have discussions about sentencing when it comes to sexual assaults and rape. The offenders often only get a probation sentence. So as you can see, while there is a great system in place, there are also some aspects which are worth discussing and I am sure this one is also such a case with the history of this man...
Btw, I can assure you that no one over here knows about this guy and the investigation - at least, I am not aware that it has appeared on the news. If so, it has been barely mentioned.
This case is so strange that I can't really come to a conclusion. Whilst it is most likely that this man took her, the parents are guilty of neglecting their children which makes this all incredibily difficult to judge.

Thank you very much, Dr. Grande, for mentioning this sad crime case because here in Germany the most people do not know who the suspect Christian Brückner is because our Mainstream media unfortunately does not show the latest news about the tragedy in general. I disagree. Most people do know who Christian Brückner is (the case was even in the most famous True Crime Show in Germany, Aktenzeichen XY and all over the Bild Zeitung for weeks). But most people in Germany do not know the parents were actually suspects in Portugal until the British Government intervened and the leading detective Gonzalo Amaral was removed from the case. But do you not wonder, why the alleged murderer has still not been charged to today? He is just a scapegoat.

Even if they weren't worried about anyone taking their children what if the children got hurt or injured in some way? Or if they woke up scared because they were alone in a strange house? And they are both medical doctors!! Absolutely astounding that they could make this kind of decision. I'll always have compassion for them but I'll never understand it.

I lived in Germany for a year in the 1990s. I was shocked that their criminal justice system was as lenient as it is compared to the US. While I don't agree with our focus on punishment over rehabilitation in the US, I also agree with Dr. Grande that there's a such thing as a tendency and that personality patterns could contribute to serial criminality.
