- Truth and Reconciliation - is written and produced in response to the CBC programs questioning her identity Buffy Ste. Marie -.
Two, separate CBC programs, the Current and the Fifth Estate reported recently that legendary musician and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie, a female folk singer who we loved to listen to and wanted to love, well that her birth certificate, and other documents and details from family members contradict her claim that she is Indigenous.
Prior to these programs airing Buffy said “To those who question my truth, I say with love, I know who I am,” Buffy I think we know who you are too!
Family members in the US including her younger sister, told CBC that Buffy was not adopted and does not have an indigenous ancestry. CBC located her birth certificate, which says Buffy was born in 1941 in Stoneham, Mass., to Albert and Winifred Santamaria, an Italian family. The document lists the baby and parents as white and includes a signature of an attending physician.
CBC also reported that her marriage certificate, a life insurance policy and the United States Census corroborate the information on the birth certificate.
Hmmm, wonder if they ever saw her perform?
Her claim to Indigenous identity was forefront in her fame. She brought First Nations culture to “Sesame Street” and was first Indigenous person to win an Oscar For the best original song in 1982 her co-writing “Up Where We Belong,” the ballad from the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman.” And Buffy wrote Universal Soldier and got swindled out of the rights and this song you are listening to now, she wrote- Time for Me to Go.
Hey Buffy, maybe it is time for some Truth and some Reconciliation on this matter. We so admire your passion, your heart, your spirit, your will ... your voice.

All she has to do is take a DNA test to prove that she is who she says she is, but my guess is she won't for obvious reasons.

Because she became famous by saying that she's a "Micmac from Canada. Well, she said that her Mom is Micmac. She used people, and lied about her family from the states.
I grew up listening to Buffy. I was sad, maybe a little hurt. But, I see her lies

Just because her father was born in Italy, that does not mean he is 100% Italian.

The threatening letter to her brother shows the true Buffy. It's all about money - not family. Speak the truth and set yourself free.
Have you read the letter - it references years of sexual abuse she suffered as a young girl at the hands of her brother . I agree, Buffy needs to speak the truth as we all do.

A cop out to say, "I am not one to judge." Anyone with common sense, who votes, who serves on a jury, can look at the evidence and judge. There is evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.
I was adopted in 1956, did the DNA thing on my 65th birthday, found and still finding blood family. Not too difficult and educational.
My mother was a foundling-abandoned as an infant in a strangers car in 1931. We never thought we would ever know anything about her birth family. But through genealogy, we have learned not only who my birth grandmother was, but also my birth grandfather.
It’s not that hard.
You are a kind soul...how can you right a wrong she has done ..some Indigenous who really needed to win the Juno..to bring home to his community...and help them all..

@@StonewallStudiosBut wouldn't that make a perfect motive to disassociate from her family and reinvent herself, albeit, as an Indigenous woman. This new role, gave her the opportunity to gain a new family, healing from her past and a lifelong purpose of fighting and supporting Indigenous rights and culture. But, most of all she stood out with her undeniable talent gaining respect and admiration from her peers. The ill gotten financial gains, awards, titles and employment opportunities were of course only possible due to her pretending to be indigenous.
The handwritten letter to her brother was enclosed in same envelope as the lawyer's letter. To me, that means she already discussed these facts with her lawyers, specifically the molestation part.
Statistically, most perpetrators of such abuse*SA, are brothers.😮
I mostly believe her on that letter. Maybe the trauma is why she reinvented herself. I don’t believe she is native though.

How can someone leave their real family and say that horrible stuff about your brother. It all was done for money. She could have fought for the rights of Indians without being blood Indian. But that wouldnt have made it possible to win Native awards.
At this point, all she has to do is drop the phony baloney Pocahontas pretense and do songs like "Volare," "Non Domenticar," "Mama" and "Pepino the Italian Mouse." After all, this would be a much more honest, genuine and authentic approach.

Has Sesame Street come out with an apology yet? From the sounds of it at least one member of their production team had doubts. They offered her the role that has defined her career. They let a white Italian-American woman claim she was a Native Canadian artist. Beverly taught a generation. The corporation gave her that platform.

Many of her songs had great passsion in them. Sadly, I led to wonder that if she is lying about her identity, was she not sincere about the passion either? Was it all simply an act to further her career?
Sainte-Marie needs to come clean in some way--she has left everyone hanging with her pre-emptive "I know my truth" video (made before The Fifth Estate episode aired). I'm not Indigenous--but as a Canadian, I'd also like to know for sure IF she is (And HOW she is, since she wasn't born or raised here). She has done very well financially and otherwise through her "status" as Indigenous and Canadian.
Strange that this story would be released during this Halloween week 2023, a time when most North American radio and TV stations carry positive stories in news casts about how much fun it is to dress up in an effort to trick others about "who you are" for treats - It may well be Buffy dressed up every day and tricked most of us into believing she was indigenous - for more than 60 years - if so, she may well deserve all the treats she received - on the other hand, maybe not lol
Another commenter pointed out that there are so many ironic titles that flank the whole debacle: her real surname, Santamaria, was the name of one of Christopher Columbus's ships. Her TV debut was on a show called "To Tell the Truth," and her folk career started at a club called the Gaslight. The "I'm real" on Sesame Street is accompanied by a disturbing grin. She was presented as a *teacher* to young Natives as well.

Or maybe you haven't watched the Fifth Estate documentary. I went into it thinking I would find a shoddy investigation and came out of it with a whole new view of Buffy. Unfortunately, the evidence against her is very very solid.

It is what you like, a person is what they want to be. She didn't seem to be one person on stage and another in private. I remember the controversial Jamake Highwater, but loved his Primal Mind series, going to look for his books too. People are upset for there has been sometimes a genocide of natives, and taken their lands. History is a very sad affair that is still being played on the world stage even now. She looks like Indian from India, not Italian .

@LanceLance-sz3kx I was adopted, and my birth certificate says the same things. It lists my adopted mother as giving birth to me, which is a real lie. I'm not even from their culture. Not even close.
@@sr2291 But what does your ORIGINAL birth certificate say? Of course your post-adoptive birth certificate will list your adoptive parents as your parents because when you were adopted they became your LEGAL parents. You have 2 birth certificates, an original and an amended one.

She checked the box "white". The moral here is never get too close to your heroes, they are bound to disappoint.

@@khmanuel Look on the birth certificate. It says the mother supplies the information. I am not ruling out that her mom could have had an affair and wrote her husband's name on the birth certificate. She needs to do her own DNA test to see if she has indigenous cousins.
I look at it this way? Did she donate some of her money to the charities of native Americans? Awards are....okay. But it's the actions that count. She brought awareness about the love and passion of the native Americans to main stream radio. That's a hell of a accomplishment if you ask me. As far as that sexual abuse stuff? Well such stuff ( especially childhood ) being told as a lie is rare. Whatever the case, she is 82 years old. A net worth of 3 million? I really don't call that rich. Living comfortable yes. I say let things be. Don't be too quick to turn on her. Let her live the rest of her years in peace. Not shame. Maybe folks should look at the charities she was involved in before throwing her under the bus. Such a unique voice too.

She founded the philanthropic non-profit fund Nihewan Foundation for Native American Education in 1969. In 1996, she created the Cradleboard Teaching Project. It facilitates communication among Indigenous and mainstream school children through computer networking. Sainte-Marie used her multimedia skills to create a core curriculum based in Indigenous cultural perspectives.
Buffy also stole Juno awards, money and opportunities that belonged to real indigenous ppl. Like Kelly Fraser who committed suicide at 26. Buffy stole that award from her. Her small contributions were small compared to 60 yrs of playing Indian for personal gain.
