Bought one before watching a single review. The 790 is already a special machine but built to a price point, KTM turned things to 11 for this badass middleweight.
I did the same. My old bike was a Ducati Monster 821 and the 790 was not enough. The 890R is perfect bike for me I think. Fast and agile, enough power, adjustable suspension and acceleration what I expect I haven't ridden it yet though. Could be wrong, but I don't think so.
@@perryburns6515 that is yet to be seen. I intend to bring them both to some of the best mountain roads in the country. The 2020 SDR is very good, but I wanted as lightweight as possible.
I LOVE my 890 Duke R. In my fifty years of riding it is by far the finest machine I have ever thrown a leg over. It has connected me to my inner hooligan: Perfect brakes and torque everywhere, and the Akrapovic silencer I ordered when I purchased the machine looks and sounds great. Definitely not for touring but probably the best instrument ever devised for hooning around.
Confession time: When I had a 1290 SDR I would put it in Rain mode in the twisties because I could be so much smoother. It would still rocket from corner to corner. This may be the right balance.
Hi i was looking for an 890 duke review on google recently and i saw your review. I am korean so i dont know english well so i translated it and it helped a lot thank you
KTM have a history of bring out new engine sizes regularly. Eg. in a 10 year span they had 950,990,1190,1290,1050,1090 and that's not including all their other engines. They obviously have worked out a cost effective way of doing so, if it was easy then every manufacture would do it. I love it!...
Nice review & a very cool bike. Looks super fun & everything you'll need & more for the road. I'd have this over the 1290 as you can no doubt use more of it more of the time.
When I had a 1290 SDR the only time I "used the power" was passing a line of cars -- or a line of long, rumbling cruisers (not sure what brand) on a long two-lane road. And even then, it wasn't all the power.
I think the z900 isint really in the same league. Too heavy and the inline 4 has a very different character compared to the triple and twin engines on the street and 890! But none the less would still be interesting to see..especially from an Indian point of view cause they're alla couple of lakhs apart from each other!
Z900 not in the same league? It's heavier yes, but it has 125 hp 73 ft-lb (crankshaft figures, but after full tuning become wheel figures). Engine is also extremely smooth, very grunty. Chassis is very stable and confidence inspiring. It's easy to fling through the curves without fear (unlike MT-09). Suspension and brakes are the reason it's not expensive, like other Japanese offerings.
Nah 790 owners aren't pissed at the 890R ... sure it's a slightly better bike - but for a significant increase in cost ... and it still doesn't have fully adjustable forks (no preload) and doesn't come with the full electronics package as stock (have to pay a further £650 / $750 for the 'tech pack'). I'm very very happy with my 790 - brand new it cost me £3,000 less than an 890R with the tech pack included!! 😊

Probably not: KTM never used the 125hp 1090 engine on the Duke platorm, which is sad because it would have been a great Duke, more agile and relevant for the road than the 1290 SuperDuke R.

Is it notchy in a bad way like the BMW G310R transmission? If you're this hyped about it Troy, it sounds like a good bike. Pegs and seat are such small things and easy to fix.
Been digging on the Triumph Speed Twin and Street Triple, until I test drove this today. Dammit. Coming from Harley and Goldwing, the twin is home vs the triple & lower powered twin of triumph. Reliability, looks and quality are the trade-off. But might be worth it in this case
Great review by Troy, clever video production (with the truck-msrp bits 😆), the bike itself seems and sounds great for a very hot category. Maybe a shootout with F900R and MT-09 SP?
Nice work Troy! This thing would be a right scalpel! Some of the other U.S. reviewers have reported a buttery smooth transmission though you weren't impressed. Is this a luck of the draw thing or are you just better at your job? Also, just between you and me would most riders be quicker through those awesome canyons on the 890 instead of the 1290?
As much as I'd like to say I'm better at my job than the other US journos, that's simply not the case. I know most of those folks, I'm friends with most of them, and they are all excellent riders. I think it was just an issue with the particular bike I was on.
I mean the Tuono has an MSRP of like $4k more...granted that yea they're probably clearing out those bikes for a good price! Same with lots of other last years models!
@@Magnus-pm7ic I have, and also a 1290 duke and I just think its too much hp for most riders. Great bikes but impossible to truly open up on the street.
The Tuono is made for very short people. I absolutely would get it but I am 6"2 and am still bitter I do not fit on it. The top of the tank comes to about the middle of my thigh.
Ktm isn't sell the HP to you, the greatest value of the KTM is Torque. Either for sport like rc8 and the naked series like 200, 390, 690, 790, 890. I remember when a senior rider once said, Torque never gets you bored. Then i agree. Other than that, one thing i always noticed about ktm is the radical design unlike the others. Especially for the superduke. But the 890 is still good enough and unique, obviously. That parallel twin 270degree sounds as his big bro superduke in inline engine. Also, the host. He explains his impression nicely. The pros and cons with no hard feeling. One thing sounds similar to me, that he is indonesian. i think.
Plz explain the differences between the 790 and the 890 covering the pricing, maintenance, mileage and spare parts. I hope this 890 doesn't replace the 790. Will it?
Awesome review. Just aquired the 790 Duke last year and it looks like the 890 has taken everything one step further. Wish I could have the 890 now, but pricing in Australia not the cheapest, basic price doesn't include track package and quick shifter. So my 790 is a keeper, love it too bits! Other than the annoying leaks here and there.
Is the additional purchase cost over the 790 worth it? I'm looking for an upgrade from my first bike, and these two are up high on my list. Apart from the street triple r.
if you plan on doing lots of track days and have the skills to exploit the extras that it offers then go for the 890R .... if you're not planning on track days then the 790 already offers more than enough for the large majority of road riders 😉
Hello sir Troy I have serious questions coz I'm planning too buy big bike my personal choice is KTM 890 in MT-O9 my question is in this two bike how is much more good for there background
Hi there, sorry off the subject. What is the recording stick gimbal you've got strapped to your back?🧐Great review by the way. Hope we will find 890 in adventure bike soon 😉Take care 👍
KTM really needs to start making more RC models, especially an RC890 based on this bike. I mostly hate these KTM nakeds but this 890 looks a bit less like an insect. Still an RC version would be preferred, not sure why everyone is so in to nakeds when you can have the same riding position and suspension setup in a nicer looking fully faired version... Sport tourers are the ticket.
Thanks the video, looking forward to seeing you get some more time with it (you clearly liked what rode so far!). What's that awesome backpack thing with the 1/4 20 mounting threads? That's so prefect for 360 cameras!
I left my 790 completely stock just so i can switch to a.... super duke r next year, why switch to an 890? You still have to pay for the dlc (track pack, quick shifter, blipper etc...) as the beast and at least you know it really is an upgrade especially since the beast is 90% completely revamped.
You hit a nerve when mentioning the poor shifting. No minor thing for me, been there, done that with the Duke 690. What about vibration????? Can't KTM make a bike that shifts well and doesn't vibrate. Maybe "Not quite ready to race but it's smooth and shifts good"" would be better.
CanyonMiniCooper I have a Honda VFR with a hydraulic clutch. I’m not so sure there’s any real advantage. The cable has a nice simplicity. Same with cable throttles vs ride by wire.
I don't know why KTM put front wheels on their bikes, nobody uses them.
Stability when parked.
It look great...innovative styling!

I bet my house that i dont even own on the fact that every reviewer or any one who rode this bike ( in twisties or track) will absolutely love this bike. Yes there is a big elephant in the room called orangReliability tsk tsk Take a leap of faith, take the risk... the rewards are just that good. come to the orange side..
F900R seems like a softy, a mellow, a cruiser naked from the reviews I've seen. Certainly carries a pile more weight and the power just isn't there.
I’m Japanese. Your helmets I feel Japanese’s “和”☺️☺️
And I like it video, thanks bro 🤓

Cliche Japanese bikes are boring
Soloman 5k CBR1000RR-R,H2R are boring????🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I don’t think so.
@@てん-v7f don't mind the guy, he's just plain stupid
Sorry bro, want to buy that helmet, but what it say, I mean, those words, what's means, thank!!
Did you see the first guy's rear tire slide out? @ 4:58
Fortunately the pegs and seat are easy to fix. The gearbox. Hmmmm.
Nobody seems to know how to do gearboxes like Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki....
@@exothermal.sprocket my 2010 street triple had an amazing gearbox. My 1290R is much more agricultural instead
Perry Burns, it was an adjustment issue with the bike’s quickshifter.
As much as I'd like to say I'm better at my job than the other US journos, that's simply not the case. I know most of those folks, I'm friends with most of them, and they are all excellent riders. I think it was just an issue with the particular bike I was on.
@@TroySiahaanthat's good to hear. Thanks for the reply, looking forward to a test ride!
I like it! Till you realize you can buy a 2019 tuono for like 12 grand
I mean the Tuono has an MSRP of like $4k more...granted that yea they're probably clearing out those bikes for a good price! Same with lots of other last years models!
more hp doesn't mean better
@@austinkaufman9402 you haven't ridden a tuono
@@Magnus-pm7ic I have, and also a 1290 duke and I just think its too much hp for most riders. Great bikes but impossible to truly open up on the street.
The Tuono is made for very short people. I absolutely would get it but I am 6"2 and am still bitter I do not fit on it. The top of the tank comes to about the middle of my thigh.
Why ktm does not provide led headlights in every segment of duke starting from 125.At least they can provide this it looks beautiful.
Still would rather have a triumph street triple
The perfect choice. 😉
Tre Webster ugliest headlights known to man
@@flosh2walkthrough672 No, the KTM's are fugly.
I love my S1000r until I look at those wonky lights...
Until you grab the Duke throttle and get kicked in the backside with a big wave of torque...
Yes! Next ride on my list and short gears great fir climbing
Someone got any clue which motorcycle is at 9:30? I am sure its a Inline 4
It might be MaxWrist’ BMW S1000RR... He was at the same location watching them film the B-roll before he went on wrecking the bike...
Thx, I will get this soon. The Z06 got pushed back to 2022 so 2 yrs for shake down then I'll get one. Until then...890 R
ALL KTMs are fun and exciting to ride
One thing sounds similar to me, that he is indonesian. i think.
I think the 1290 v twin sounds much better/meaner than this parallel twin. It’s much deeper and more brutal.
So we say bye bye to KTM 790 duke?
That Engine on Husqvarna Platform Please...
Maybe a Nuda900R
How do you compare this with the Street Triple RS?
Anyone know why the KTMs have non-LED turn signals in the US but everywhere else in the world they're LED?
Vess I have a RC8R and the new SDGT and they both have LED turn signals which KTM are you referring too?
@@Pmason718 I see that the Euro version of the 390 Adventure and 390 Duke have LEDs in Europe but not the states.
Don’t stop doin these xx

Nice review bang... 👍
My last bike was a ninja 300 (first bike). Would this be too much bike for my next purchase?
so how much more does it cost than the 790 ? and what is the weight difference ? and please compare with the MT 09
That's so prefect for 360 cameras!
onenineteen119 This is it: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1189051-REG/glide_gear_med_100_medusa_gopro_camera_body.html?sts=pi&pim=Y
I purchased two 790 Adventure Rs. Couldn’t wait. Everyone said this would happen. Lol
Thanks KTM.
So when is the 890 adventure coming out? Lol
Bought a used 890r with 2400 miles in it, shifts like butter.
I left my 790 completely stock just so i can switch to a.... super duke r next year, why switch to an 890? You still have to pay for the dlc (track pack, quick shifter, blipper etc...) as the beast and at least you know it really is an upgrade especially since the beast is 90% completely revamped.
Can KTM make anything with gauges rather than TFT displays?
Hey guys, nice review but please do consider color grading the videos. That will make it look so much nicer.
What's the added exo back-shield he's wearing? Anyone knows? Is it a shield at all?
Acceleration times ?
Why blinkers non led? 🤔
You hit a nerve when mentioning the poor shifting. No minor thing for me, been there, done that with the Duke 690. What about vibration????? Can't KTM make a bike that shifts well and doesn't vibrate. Maybe "Not quite ready to race but it's smooth and shifts good"" would be better.
ktm quickshifter was not that good on 790 too. Must be in high revs to get it to work good
zepcertoxic, I disagree. I shift with it in the midrange all the time.
As expected
She's a beauty
What happened to those indicators!!
Any comparison with the Street 765 RS?
Did I see a cable clutch?
CanyonMiniCooper I have a Honda VFR with a hydraulic clutch. I’m not so sure there’s any real advantage. The cable has a nice simplicity. Same with cable throttles vs ride by wire.
