Big Boys and Great Toys: Live Steam Garden Railway and Real Steam Trains on Backyard Railroad

  • Some say live steam trains, others say real steam trains. Today, we discover the world of garden railway, backyard railroad or garden railroad with live steam locomotives from 5 inch gauge up to 7 1/4 inch gauge. It is about ridable miniature railways including locomotives large enough for one or several persons to ride on.
The whole video was taken on the railway course of the German Railway Modelling Club, called “Dampfbahnclub Taunus”, located near Frankfurt/Main, Germany. As you can see from the tracks, the park railway is suitable for 5 inch and 7 ¼ inch model trains. Please, enjoy these steam locomotives and listen to their original sound.

Today, May 4th I saw Big Boy 4014 coupled up with the 844, heading west on the UP line out of Cheyenne Wyoming, under its own power, fully restored. It was incredible, It was History. Yes the Big Boy will never pull freight any more, but still in all, too see her chugging down the tracks and hear her whistle. Yeah, it was so wonderful. But you guys, to have built a Big Boy so small and fully operational, that takes talent. Good job and great video.

@@jetegtmeier71 Yes. The locomotive shown is a Norfolk & Western Class A, a 2-6-6-4. That wheel arrangement originated on the Seaboard Air Line, which wanted a powerful locomotive for fast freight. It was a much lighter engine than the N&W's version, however! The Seaboard's engines were eventually sold to the Baltimore & Ohio.

Steam is a lot more powerful than many people realise.
I recall reading about (and I've since seen here on YT) real steam engines which are only about 4 times the size of a Hornby HO scale engine, and which run on raised tracks with people riding astride. One of those engines can easily pull several adults around the track.
The reason I recall this is because the writer of the book told a short story about how he allowed an inexperienced person to drive his engine, and noticed that after starting off too fast, the engine seemed to be running a bit "rough". When he checked it later, he discovered that the inexperienced driver had allowed too much steam into the cylinders at the start and one of the pistons had been literally torn right off of the connecting rod. Since those cylinders are double-acting (they provide power on both strokes), the engine was only operating on three-quarters of its full power and it was still managing to pull four adults around.
There's a reason steam power ruled for some decades before being supplanted by the internal combustion engine.

Shame these gages weren't standardized. In most of the USA 7½” 190mm is standard with 1½”: 1’-0”/⅛ scale, which is a scale 5’-0”/1524mm gage. 1.6”:1’-0”/1/7.5 scale has become very popular. This scale makes 7½” gage represent 56¼” gage, which railways commonly used on straight and slightly curved track to reduce hunting, the lateral weaving that coned wheels do on straight track.
The correct gage for ⅛ scale is 7-¹/16” so both 7¼” and 7½” are overwide.
The narrower large scale gages have the same incompatibility between USA and European large scale gages.
¼ scale park trains in the USA are almost all 16” gage while British and some eastern USA are 15”.
The NMRA in the USA worked for standardization back when model railroading was a small hobby. Way back, each manufacturer established its own scales and gages, so it took quite many years to establish standard scales, gages and scale/gage relationships.
The old Märklin #1 gage, 1¾”/44.45mm (usually called “45mm”) was revived by Lehmann as G gage, 1:22½ scale representing metre gage. With the rise (explosion!) of interest in large scale ¹/32 scale for garden railways several manufacturers, including Märklin, are making ¹/32 scale rolling stock.
