  • Skandoor removed our 2 single garage doors and replaced them with a double sectional door in 6 hours.
    Shot from inside our conservatory to avoid dust, resulting in unwanted reflections.
    Sony A6400 on S&Q mode.

    Nice work. It amazes me how many ppl get so accustomed to not wearing any gloves and more importantly safety glasses. Mind boggling how little regard people have for their eyes in particular. One wrong move or spark, etc and blind forever.

      Don't know if there are engineering calculations, but the point loads at the ends of the new much heavier header are more than doubled. Accelerated differential settlement of the building corners would be best case.

    Very neat, just one thing a few safety glasses would be on my list as I was up the hospital a few times until the penny dropped and the guy at the clinic had a bit of a word abt my eyes.

    Highly impressed with the attention to PPE, Hats off to you (literally) No gloves , no ear defenders. I guess as on a private property you are not required. Had this been a commercial premises you would be breaching all kinds of H+S rules. Ok it is your hearing and fingers that will suffer. Otherwise a good job.

      My Dad did this type of hard and dirty work day in and day out for over 70 years in the garage door business. Dust, asbestos, fiberglass , whatever chemicals. No safety glasses, no face coverings, non insulated power tools. Mud, snow standing across the top steps of a 14 foot A-frame ladder. Retired at 91 because he tore ligaments in his right ankle getting it caught under the ottoman at home. 94 years old and still healthy as someone half his age, just has to walk with cane now. Parents married 72 going on 73 years.

      He and the people he worked with were the rule. Knew at least ten men like him. My dad has lived longer because he never drank alcohol and smoked tobacco.

    Why was this NOT built like the after result in the first place?!?!? The resulting double sectional door makes the space USEFUL. I can't figure why people don't build things right the first time! No matter, you got what you need done. I love this video. I was just wanting to see how this gets done.

    I want to do the opposite someday. A few years ago a spring broke on my double and I was trapped with both cars inside. Can't lift the double with a bad spring, a single I could have. Plus, a sinlge can use extension springs found at all the home stores.

    Watch the video. Looked a neat job.. only problem. I have with it. Is the lack of ppe...you can't see the damage. They have recieved from the dust in their lungs. And it will come back to get them eventually...

    Very impressed with your video and your workers skill levels. Could you please tell me the size of the beam they used to span the opening, its thickness, hight and the width of opening.

      It would not matter what beam he used. The I beam is specifically selected by the engineering firm, to support the load of his garage. A beam for your house / garage would be different.

      Did you mean PPE? But you're quite right - at work I would have insisted the contractors wore necessary PPE - but I'm not obliged to do so at home.

      It’s never a good thing to see lads working in casual clothes, trainers etc and with no goggles, ear defenders/masks,boots,gloves…. Or even scaffolding. Can’t think why my comments seem to fall on deaf ears when somebody is saving a few Bob 😉

    Sur deux points d appui en brique ,le DTU exige 70 cm de repos ,sauf s il y a un poteau béton de chaque côté ,surtout vu la portée de l IPE.

    I feel like this is an obvious question but didn't see it answered in the comments. How do you know it was structurally safe to remove that brick pillar in the middle?

      The brick pillar was supporting the ends of the original 2 light weight beams - one for each gap - you saw them being removed. A survey calculated how heavy duty the single beam needed to be - it looks pretty strong to me though I wasn't involved in the calculation. One pessimistic commentator suggests it will all collapse - I promise to upload a new video if he proves to be right. Anyway, my glass is half full!

    The door was electric which finished it off nicely.

      Sorry for the delay - probably too late now, but here's the info you requested.
      The door is 4.85m wide and the rsj overhangs by 13cm at each end (difficult to measure the rsj directly).

      The original doors are cheap up and over type where the replacement double door is a sectional door which is much higher quality, insulated and allows more space behind the door.

      A lot of that cost was due to it being a sectional door rather than roller.
      I think a roller door would have been about 1k less.

      Engineer. If there is a post, it's to reduce span, allow lighter header. Removing pot doubles the span, so heavier header.

      About £5000. It would be a lot cheaper for a roll up door rather than a sectional door like mine. A sectional door will hugely outlast a roll-up.

    I’m sure you have your reasons, but at that price I would’ve just bulldozed the whole thing and upgraded to a larger garage while at it. Looks like the smallest option possible for a double garage lol, but that’s coming from a North American, and someone who would use it for vehicles., which not many people seem to do nowadays for some reason lol
