    Fun fact: Aldi also cuts costs by reducing transport distances. If they can buy regionally for roughly the same price and quality, they will.

    Aldi and Trader Joe‘s are actually the businesses of the same German family, divided between the late brothers Albrecht.
    So Trader Joe‘s is equivalent to Aldi Süd in Germany, am Aldi is basically Aldi Nord, which I personally prefer.
    Aldi/ Trader Joe‘s are still family owned businesses who do not fall down the trap of stock holder capitalism, which makes companies shell out their wins to share holders instead of investing the wins back into the businesses…a huge win!
    Aldi is the second best discounter we have in Germany, I prefer Lidl for fruit and veggies, but Aldi for red wine and strong liquor

      The Aldi in my village is great with the way how fresh their vegetables and fruits are - Lidl in the neighbourtown is not like this. It all depends so much on how frequent and how many costumers use the shop and how good the organization of the single market is.

      @@geneviere199 that‘s totally true…depending on which one is more popular, the fruit/veggies/meat will be fresher.
      I‘ve lived in a small village before wher the Aldi was much better, because it was smack in the middle of the next town over, whereas the Lidl was out of the way.

      Where i live, in Bremen Germany, i mostly go to a Netto market because its only 400-500m aways while the next Aldi is double the way. But whenever for some reasons i had to walk to Aldi i was really surprised that the prices are not cheaper than Netto anymore these days. And product wise Netto has at least a way better selection of ice cream.

    ALDI sales brand products, but under a different name and under a different layout. Well, at least they are manufatured in the same factory.
    For example: You can buy "milsani" buttermilk instead of "müller" buttermilk, but the producer of "milsani" is "müller" < same producer, different brand-name < this goes on for a lot of products.

      This was the case, but it's not anymore.
      There are very few exceptions but most of it is order made and not rebranded anymore.
      Aldi dictates the prices of their suppliers who are often dependent on Aldi as a customer.

    I remember times when i was a kid like 40-30 years ago a lot of people said aldi is for poor people and were kind of ashamed. In elemtary school we also mocked each other when our parents bought stuff at aldi or making racist jokes like: what is a turkish handbag - an aldi plastic bag. But It changed a lot in those 30 years now all kind of people buy at aldi rich or poor doesnt matter. Also many more discounter exist now next to aldi in germany

      At the beginning Aldi goods are often low quality, but then, I would say in the 90s, Aldi changed policy and since then the quality is as good or even better than anywhere else. Price is still low because of the sheer mass they can order from the producers. Oh yes and no TV ads or any such bullshit.

    The mechanics about Aldi having lower prices fpr household staples and other sellers lowering prices accordingly has lead to very low grocery prices in Germany, comparing to neighbouring countries like France or the Netherlands. Aldi (and Lidl as well) are able to influence price politics in the US as well, if they reach are critical consumer mass. It is already happening in the UK .

  • @The_Bricklayer
    @The_Bricklayer 3 дня назад +13

    Aldi sets the prices in germany. If Aldi lowered some product prices, everyone else must lower their prices too. It's funny that the same thing is happening right now in the U.S.A
    Aldi is the reason why the german groceries are cheap in our country.

    • @diedampfbrasse98
      @diedampfbrasse98 2 дня назад

      they started that, but the times of them leading the charge in Germany is gone ... now they simply exchange blows with lidl, Netto, Penny and others, which operate fairly identical. Whoever gets a better deal sourcing one of the essential products uses that to bait costumers away from the other.
      And this isnt just an opinion, but an explaination from Aldi Nord itself which 2022 went into a negative operational profit margin for the first time in its history (as far as we know).
      But you are right, what Aldi introduced kept Germanies grocery prices surprisingly low in comparison to most other western nations. The Aldi brothers certainly deserve respect and thanks for introducing such an aggressive business model. Thanks to that we also are one of the few economies where grocery prices actually come down again soon after a crisis pushed them, rather then staying up a slong as possible to maximize profits.
      But I rather doubt that the US divisions of german discounters operate with the same high motivation for lowest price, seems the average American consumer is far too brand loyal to constantly switch to whoever offers the better deal so there is less to gain by cutting into the profit margins too deeply.

      Trader Joe's is Aldi Nord (they bought it in the late 60s or 70s). Aldi in the US is Aldi Süd. If you live on the north side of the Aldi divide in Germany, you'll probably get Trader Joe's items because of that.

    Yes, here in Germany, Aldi feels far less expensive than other supermarkets. The summary price for the heap in Your shopping card mostly is a positive surprise. You normally buy at Aldi first and only what You do not get there You will later pick up elsewhere. After some visits You soon will find out which products meet Your quality expectations. But for the most part they offer good product quality. And the cashiers are very quick at the supermarket checkout.

    One thing about bananas: Almost all bananas we find in stores around the world today are identical clones. It's always the Cavendish banana. It is named after William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire, who planted bananas from China in his greenhouse at Chatsworth House around 1830. Almost all bananas traded worldwide today belong to the Cavendish variety, i.e. they are ultimately clones of this one banana plant from the Duke of Devonshire's greenhouse. Therefore, it doesn't matter where you buy your bananas.

      Even tho you are right about all comercial bananas being clones there can be a big difference in taste/quality because of climate, soil quality and care on the plantation. Funfact because all most comercial bananas are clones they have absolutely no resistance to some diseases and whole plantations can get devastated in matter of days.

    The Aldi store here in my city in Portugal has a large LED display "shoved" in the faces of the people who enter the store, telling them how much electricity the store is using and how much of that electricity is being produced by the photovoltaic panels they installed in the roof of the store. Efficiency but also sustainability and environmental conscience. 🙂
