Nah, in German crisps (UK English) is (Kartoffel-)Chips and chips (UK) or fries (USA) are Pommes Frittes (originating from French/Belgian) or short Fritten - that always had me soooo confused as a kid learning (Oxford) English as their secondary language 😅

I'm from the Netherlands, and have been living in Freiburg for 4 years now. The rent is expensive and its impossible to buy a house in Freiburg. But that's a general problem in Germany and the Netherlands. Despite that, I like to live in the city a lot. It has everything a city has, but is small and sometimes feels village like. At the same time, although living in the city, in multiple directions one is very quickly in nature. Be it a mountains, lakes, forests, etc. Not far away at all. And there's lots of interesting cultural events. The only thing I hate about it is that it's so green (also politically) that it's extremely car unfriendly. Freiburg could really profit from modernising their traffic light system, crossroads etc. And above all create a ring for all the traffic that doesn't even want to be in Freiburg but just want to get to the other side. For some weird reason all the traffic has to go right through the city. Aside from that weirdness, having the Hochschwarzwald so nearby ist just magical :)

The biggest problem / DANGER for bicycles & pedestrians is the SELF-CENTERED MINDSET of car drivers. Americans dont even get trained to look for cyclists and pedestrians ... because they learn to drive from their parents.

When I read a US citizens that says that prison like that make people commit crimes only to go to jail and live a better life than outside I think how bad life has to be in US to prefer to live without freedom No one in German want to go to prison, no one do crimes to go to prison But US prisons are in the hand of private corporations. Private companies that mange prisons are paid based on the number of incarcerated people and for this reason their first goal is to make people stay in prison as long as possible and come back as quick as possible after leaving it. It's sick and mental... like more or less everything in US in last decades

What you will almost only find in germany are Knödel. Germans make doughy potato balls.

Let´s not forget regional specialities like Spätzle, Knödel, Pellkarkartoffeln with Quark and Leinöl, Labskaus, Fischbrötchen, Grünkohl with Pinkel hundred kinds of Wurst and even more kinds of bread! When i think about it, i love german food. Our cuisine is maybe not so fancy but it is hearty and delicious.

u go to lunch after 5 or 6 hours working so i dont know when she starts working. and its funny because a british woman talks about food thats a joke in it self

so traditional German mealtimes are: 7 or 8 am breakfast, 12 noon lunch, 3 or 4 pm coffee and cake, 6 or 7 pm dinner. Especially for kids, often the cake time is the most important meal because it's all sweet haha.

Personally I'm also more drawn to Heidelberg castle and similar structures, so I'm happy it's on first place. It's the authentic experience. Neuschwanstein, as beautiful as it is, is the fairytale king's vision but not much of the "real deal". My personal fav is Burg Eltz. But only so far, I have more on my "To-visit" list :D.

A castle is a residence, a living space for aristocracy. A fortress is for protection and usually build during the middle ages. If you check the english wikipedia article "Château" you have the infos about what a castle by german (and french, lol) definition is, if you check the article about "Castles" you get the info about fortresses.

"Mahlzeit " is just a short form of "gesegnete Mahlzeit" , means blessed meal

I’ve lived in Freiburg for 7 months and it’s the best city I’ve ever visited and I would absolutely recommend for everyone

when people don't only work "from 9 to 5" (with noon just 3 hours after starting work), but also eg "from 7 to 3" (with noon after more than half the working time), you shouldn't be surprised when people have their lunch break at or even before noon ... "midday" (that's what she called it) can be either noon when only looking at the clock, but can also be the middle of the working day. In our family, we had warm lunch when i came out of school as a child (around 1pm or 2 pm), coffee&cake when my father and grandfather came or were home around 3-5, and in the evening "Abendbrot" (literally what that word says: evening bread) while my father and grandfather got our warm lunch warmed up as their dinner (they usually didn't eat at their jobs in a canteen). When i grew older, strict lunchtime time was no longer that important (and school also often ended later than 2pm), and warmed up lunch as dinner was neither nice nor did it save work for my mother and grandmother. thus we switched to eating anything (bread with cuts or cheese, or whatever else) as lunch and had warm dinner for all of us together. of course, on the weekend we had warm lunch together, coffee and some better/bigger cake in the afternoon, and the bread in the evening.

A castle is a defensive structure that is habituated by a family or a clan. A fortress is a merely military structure hosting a garnisson of soldiers.

My favourite castle will always be Schloss Braunfels 🏰 It is a palace that looks like it could be Hogwarts. My grandparents literally lived in the shadow of the Schloss. Parts of it date back to the 13th century, much later in the 19th the counts add elements of the neo gothic and historism. Therefor there are many different towers in all shapes and sizes. All in all it has more character than Neuschwanstein will ever have.

A castle is a protected seat of power. Every lord had something like that. Even if it was only a wooden castle with a rampart if it was only a manor lord. A fortress is a military structure built specifically to protect against a threat. Then there are also palaces, which were purely a residence for rulers. Sometimes temporary, because they used to have to travel a lot to rule. In the early Middle Ages, people also talk about traveling rulers. Later, they talk about rulers by letter. Most Germans don’t go to many Castles. I have probably seen 10 in 30 Years.
