They’re a legendary Japanese dream pop /dub/ rock band from the 90s, and their run from aerial camp to long season to uchu nippon setagaya is one of the best 3 album runs of all time, not to mention 98.12.28, one of the best live albums of all time and their last ever performance before the lead singer tragically passed away.

I’m speaking as someone who has The Smiths as my number one favorite band of all time now.
In addition to Morrissey’s voice, the band’s lyrics connected with me during some of the darkest and loneliest times of my life. I was going through a major heartbreak last year and songs like “I Know It’s Over” and “Unloveable” hit so close to home with me, it felt like I had wrote them. And other songs still hit me now like “That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore” or “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want.”
I say all this because I feel like the biggest appeal to The Smiths at least for me is how down to earth and sincere their lyrics are to the point where you feel like you could have been the one to write them.

Those are some of the greatest records we have in our culture, and would be a great start of you want to expand you knowledge. Cheers🇧🇷🙌🏼
Also, “Sobrevivendo No Inferno” is a conceptual rap masterpiece. It’s the brazilian bible for the streets. That record is even studied at schools nowadays because of how impactful and honest it was and still is. Is worth a try and some research.

It's so satisfying hearing someone else being confused why The Smiths is always so praised.
I don't like these kind of lists because they do feel very pretentious and always seem to favor certain bands. Radiohead, Floyd, Beatles, Bowie, Kanye and Kendrick for example always seem to be included. There's always classic rock, prog, new wave, art rock, indie and hip hop but they seem to pretty much leave out hard rock, punk and metal, and the only type of alternative rock is that super artsy stuff. For once i would like to see a band like Jane's Addiction, Deftones, Pantera or Soundgarden on one of these lists, just examples from the top of my head...

My critique is this: On their first record they are all over the place, combining noise, klezmer, jazz stuff and post-punk/post-rock (interesting, but quite demanding), while their 2nd record is more homogenous, but very pop-music-adjacent. I just hope they go back to where they were with their 1st album, but try to reduce it down to certain aspects and then turn them into perfection, otherwise I can respect them, but then, they will just be Arcade Fire 2, which is not my style. I've never liked Minecraft at all but I recently got the Minecraft DLC for Smash Ultimate for my brother's birthday, and the tracks included are pretty good.

Surprised to see some Brazilian records there, maybe it's a sign John should listen to some MPB? Also, Sobrevivendo no Inferno by Racionais Mc's is a GREAT rap album!

I'd like to shine a light on some Beach Boys albums that came after Pet Sounds, but are kind of forgotten:
Wild Honey, an amazing Soul-influenced record
Sunflower, the album that kind of invented Dream Pop with 'All I Wanna Do' and 'At My Window', which is one of the most beautiful songs ever
The Beach Boys Love You, A unique influence of punk-influenced upbeat songs and Synth-Pop-Ballads. Very bad lyrics, but an interesting insight into the mind of a mentally ill genius.

Definitely give the minecraft soundtrack a chance. I doubt you’ll ever play the actual game but definitely try to play it with your friends. You might like it but if you have the music on at the background. I reckon you’ll enjoy it.

I love seeing Super Mario Galaxy and Minecraft soundtracks here, but I would probably swap their placements on the list. Both Volume Alpha and Beta just narrowly edge out SMG’s soundtrack IMO.

Is it bad that I think that Untitled Unmastered is better than TPAB? Like I know it's a TPAB b sides album, but the lyrics and the sound is just more raw, unfiltered and experimental in my opinion. I love hearing how tracks 3 and 6 were probably precursors to King Kunta and For Sale respectively. I gives me like a real insight into the craft. And track 7 with the kid's choir just floors me everytime I hear it. And this isn't mentioning how tracks 1, 2, and 5 are some of my favorites on the entire album (4 and 8 are amazing too). I just think that it's imperfections make it the perfect album for me :)

You skipped all the brazillian albuns, I assume because you didn't listen to them, so I'll recomend here! You should really give "clube da esquina" and "sobrevivendo no inferno" a spin, one is MPB the other hiphop, check the lyrics, they're insane all time classics that usually people stay in their "only english speaking music" bubble and miss

Some nice entries, a surfeit of Radiohead, but no Pixies, Sonic Youth, REM, Smashing Pumpkins, Depeche Mode, The Strokes, Placebo, Neil Young, Chemical Brothers, U2, Soundgarden, Beastie Boys, Blur, PJ Harvey, Massive Attack, Garbage, Beck, Stone Roses, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam ... Maybe in the top 120 edition.

Never heard a song by Kendrick Lamar!
It is a good list, but think like the imdb100, only a certain type of person will rate music online and so you get quite a bias.
