The shaft sticking out of the seat back is tapered at the end. If you position the clip on the armrest prior to pushing the armrest onto the seat back shaft it goes on easily with just a little up and down motion. Great video. It really shortened the time I spent replacing the armrest. Thanks.
Thank you so much, I would never have figured out how to remove the armrest if I didn't see your video. For anyone with the same issue, I found a much easier way to fix it. There are ribs on both pieces, but they are not aligned. I bought some plastics shim and found that the thicker part of the shims made 3 of the ribs aligned giving a lot of surface to glue them together. I used a hot glue gun and it worked perfectly. Wish I could downlead a couple of pictures for reference.
Love your humor! I wish I had found this prior to the very well made plastic bottom side cracked. I used the ever venerable zip tie to hold mine on and it worked well until the bottom cavity cracked!
That's funny I put a sock on mine just to keep the white fabric from getting any dingier. One of these years I intend to reupholster it , maybe put a hinge in a latch, make a mini storage compartment.
Nice video! I just picked up a 2012 500, came with a broken arm rest, I'm hoping your ingenuity works for me as well. Where do I get nylon rod from? lol. Thanks for the help!
If a local hardware store doesn’t have it, try amazon or McMaster Carr. Good luck! Mine is still going strong even with a fat guy leaning on it during Autocross.
What would you recommend if my armrest doesn’t stay in place, I don’t know how to describe it in English but it doesn’t carry the weight of my arm, it slides down
Sounds like your clip must be missing or the post broken. There is a part number for the clip somewhere in these comments. If the post is broken, I’m not sure
Thanks for the video! I dropped the retaining clip and it is lost forever...I can't find it online either. I'd rather reinstall using the clip like you did, but any ideas on how to find a replacement retainer clip? thank you
Wow, I googled hard and struck out like you. I don't have anything more intelligent to say than "junkyard". Bending a piece of wire, especially without a template, would be tricky.
Wondering if you (or anyone) has any recommendations for what to do if the clip is missing? It's impossible to find online and the service repair shop that broke the arm rest (and lost the clip) is refusing the help. I'm wondering what else I can use to secure the arm rest in place without the clip!
Part # 68104721AB 1. Google this, and there are several online vendors. It's a little less than $5. Tell the jerks at the service shop it cost you $80!
@@EveryOtherFridayOff Aahh ok. So from one middle aged man to another, are these Arbarths worth a punt? I'm considering a purchase hence watching plenty of yt videos.
I love it. It’s uncomfortable, loud, ridiculous, and not particularly well made. I had an e39 540i that was better by most conventional measures. It didn’t start being fun until 80 mph. The abarth causes grins at 30. It’s not super competitive on a track, but it’s great fun. I don’t think there is a better value to be had in smiles per dollar
@@jeremyjordan3471 all I did was go to the hardware store and buy 2 tiny hinges and 8 nuts and bolts And honestly I use a hair tie near the back and it springs it closed .
God I wish someone just made after market replacements for these that I could just slap onto the socket. My armrest not only broke into two pieces, but the bottom structure of the armrest is majorly cracked and a huge chunk of it fell out, so this fix doesn't quite work.
@@EveryOtherFridayOff I really liked the armrest. I always leaned my elbow on it which is why it broke the way it did. Fun car, but my God is some of the stuff on it flimsy.
I agree. I would be uncomfortable without the armrest. I have seen somewhere (sorry, don't know where to point you except google) that someone ordered the 2014+ armrest, then dremmeled the adapter to make it fit the 2013 and older post. Not sure how hard this is, but even if you did a fairly ugly hack job, it would be hidden. I just got rid of an e39 BMW, which is a fantastic car but I got really tired of breaking 20 year old plastic bits. Makes me worry how well these wonderful Fiats will age.
@@FangsOfTheNidhogg I agree, I love my 2018 500, but some of the stuff is really flimsy, especially the driver's door handle and the armrest. Also, the spoiler on top of the hatchback worked loose-from the wind, I guess. Before I could get it up to the dealer to be reattached, it flew completely off as I was driving. I'm sticking with it because I haven't had a car this much fun to drive since I was a teenager.
Didn't mean to imply that. Some plastic, some JB weld, and some means to cut and sand it, maybee a drill is all you need. So a hand saw, a file, and a drill is the minimum you need. I just showed a bunch of equipment for fun really.
lol my fiat 500e arm rest broke just leaning over to open the door for a passenger ...godam thier cheap ass ! i am going to use jb weld steel stick fill the entire thing ...it will be the strongest arm rest ever !!!!!
You really like to shoot yourself in the foot by using nylon rod and by needing a lathe to shape it. Nylon is very difficult to bond to. You could have used sections of ABS plumbing pipe which is FAR MORE easily bonded to and way cheaper and cut it with a hacksaw. Probably lighter too. The ol' creativity mechanism was running a bit slow for you that time.

nice sock buddy! Shake it real good!
Is there an after market left armrest for the driver?

Good instructions. I'll put the Duct tape away now. Your sense of humor is so dry... I had to stop the video at the 2:00 minute mark and drink a beer.
If you bought a car with a missing armrest and clip, you can fabricate a clip from a slim coat hanger.
