I have watched nearly all of your videos on rope baskets. Thank you for posting and for all the great tips. I especially like this one on the square basket. Thanks for leaving in errors and explaining how to fix them. Very helpful videos.
LOVELY, lovely, LOVELY! You make absolutely incredible tutorials. SO easy to follow, learn from, pure education mixed with decency and kindness. That's what *I* get out of this... and all the editing, etc., is a lot of hard work. But, you make it look "seamless." *cough* THANK YOU!!!! Just Kimberly
Lol. Old habits die hard. My sewing teacher back in high school must have had an accent and now I can’t break my bad habit. I shall write it on a blackboard 1000 times. Presser, presser, presser. Eventually it will stick. Haha. Thanks for watching!
I swear my sewing teacher said pressure. I’m saying presser more than pressure now in my videos. It will stick eventually. Glad I’m not the only one out there!
You have a wonderful way of teaching your talents. I’ve now working on my fourth 1000’ of cord making trivets and baskets. I believe it was one of your tutorials that “hooked” me. I have several feet of rope wrapped and was going to start another basket today but , guess what! I’m going to try a square basket thanks to you. 😊
Nice project, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! I myself, and after watching your video several times, decided to try this project, but tried to use bias fabric to continuously wrapping around the 1/4 inch paracord, or use just a simple 3/4 inch wide ribbon cut at an angle, wrap the ribbon or bias around the paracord and stitch it with a 4-5mm straight stitch with same color thread, or with a contrasting thread, and for as long as I need. And to do the square shape, I am joining the paracord in a parallel fashion on the dimension I want, and then do a final round around the four borders of the construction. In that fashion I can do either squares or rectangles. I have been able to do place mats, square coasters, shopping and carrying bags for my two daughters in the colors they like or want. And I add their names or initials using a contrasting paracord sewn to one side, or using my embroidery machine to do patches that I later sew to the project. Thanks for your very educative, inventive and well explained video, the Lord bless you. And Happy New Year 2024!!!!!
Wow! You’re even more detailed than me. lol. My first videos I didn’t show cutting fabric strips on the bias but that’s how I did all my other baskets. Lots of fun ideas in your comment. Your baskets will be gorgeous indeed! Thanks for watching!

Just gorgeous, so many useful tips! I want to make a square trivet that looks like a cutting board with some machine embroidery on it, having to do with Farmer's Markets where she sells homegrown veggies. I plan to fabric wrap a two-row border and hanging handle. This video has been so helpful, thank you very much!
QUESTION...Do you have suggestions on cleaning these rope baskets? I love your teaching style, it is very complete and succinct. I'm having a wonderful time....it is very calming for me.
This is just beautiful! I love fabric/sewing arts and the things you have made with this technique, plus your creativity, are amazing Crafty Patti! You have a gift with your pleasant teaching demeanor. Just awesome, I can’t wait to get started! Thank you so very much.
I was hooked when I watched your video on making the plain rope baskets. I have made a few. I love the idea of a square bowl. Can the sides be made straight? I wanted to use some for storage on shelves. Thanks for your videos. You really explain everything so clearly.
Thks for watching my rope bowl videos! Glad you are enjoying them. If you want straight sides on your square basket then when you are finished sewing the base than bring your basket all the way up till it hits the side of your sewing machine and start sewing your sides. Continue sewing in that manner until you have the height that you want.
Translation: Great job Patty. I would add satin fabric to the handles... because of the humidity of the hands. And a fine wire inside to strengthen. hug ¡Gracias por tu gran comentario y por tus ideas! Thanks for your great comment and for your ideas!
Thank you so much for your comments and your support and sharing too! Much appreciated. I have a personal goal to reach 100,000 subscribers. Getting there!
Yes, I am now thinking of the foot as the pressure foot, haha. When I hold the line with the foot, I only put the foot down, not the needle. I just made a basket with one inch wide bias cut fabric. There was practically no fraying. I put a little glue stick on each end of the strip, no clips, unless I need to mark a place. I cut the point of the bias strip off at the beginning to start flat, but not at the end of the strip. Thank you for your very comprehensive videos!
That’s great Katherine! Thanks for all your info on cutting fabric strips on the bias. Sounds like a great way to go. You made me think of just using fabric bias tape. Would only be in solid colours though. Already cut to size and no raw edges. Good for little bits of color here and there perhaps.
The prettiest ones I've seen so far! You really have some great tips. I've never made one so I'm going to start at the beginning and watch those first before I tackle making my first bowl.
The square rope basket is a little trickier to make than the round rope bowls. If this is your first attempt at rope bowls than I would suggest starting with a basic round rope bowl. Not sure if you have seen my rope bowl playlist so I’m giving you the link so you can try some other tutorials to get you started. Here is the link: ruclips.net/p/PLp6o7Vy1aS_X3YAB8rzu2g01VwfZ67gEg
I have watched many rope bowl/basket tutorials . Yours are the best. Organized, clear, precise. Thank you. Where do you sell your rope bowls and baskets?
This really a beautiful basket. I have one question, would a bias strip make it easier to wrap the cord. It might fray less. A rotary blade with the pinking edge might work too. I'll have to give it a try. Thank you so much for the beautiful Tutorial. You are an excellent teacher.
Beautiful! Great job with directions . If I wanted to do a rectangle, same concept in the beginning but forming a rectangle with the loopys??? I've never done squares or rectangles. Thank you for your great video.
Not sure what you are referring to as loopies but your first cord length is about 6” long and then you bring your cord down and around the first 6” and keep sewing around that first 6” length until you have the size of base that you want.
Great instruction! Thanks for the detailed info. I wonder, might it be a less bulky, smoother join, if you added the new fabric strip underneath the ending one? Also, perhaps a dab of fabric glue between the two.
Lots of ways to approach the joins. I usually don’t use glue as I don’t want to muck up my needles and machine with glue especially if I am sewing the next round right away and then my needle goes into it.
Whatever works for you for sure. If it’s all the same fabric and your not worried about placement of colour than you can sew all the strips ahead of time. I did that on one of my bowls that I posted on my channel and also folded over the side edges so there was no raw edges. Made for a real sturdy bowl too.
Hi Whitney. LOL you catch on quick. I did not show how to cut the fabric on the bias in most of my rope bowl videos so I just published a video on making an oval rope bowl with bias cut fabric strips. And yes, it does make a difference. There is a lot less fraying on the edges of the strips and it has of course more stretch which makes it easier to wrap your rope. Should have showed that in all my videos. But Woops! We all learn as we go and learn from each other which is the beauty of social media sites like RUclips.
Your videos are so wonderful to follow, thank you. I have a question about fabric, some say fabric must be cut on the bias, and I see you do not, what is the big difference between the two ? the way you do it would be far faster, I just didn't know the reasoning behind it.
I have made several baskets with varied techniques. In my how to make rope basket playlist you will see a video on how to cut fabric on the bias. You can do it either way for sure. But when you cut on the bias there is less ravelling on the edges and there is more stretch to the fabric therefore it makes it easier to wrap the rope.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you so much for your reply. I have only made them with fabric on the bias. But I am going to have to try it this way once.
I have a video on dying rope and cord and then I made several spring coloured bowls and items with the dyed cord. Have a look in my rope bowl playlist and you will see the videos there.
I love the panel you used on this video. I'm sure I won't be able to find it since it's been so long. Do you recall the name of it or where you got it. I'm going to attempt my first bowl tomorrow. I've watched several of your videos so far. You are a great teacher. Thank you.
I buy most of my fabric from my local Fabricland store. And I usually look find most of my fabric in the discount section. Don’t recall the name of it. Thanks for watching my videos!
Yes, I sure do. I have a whole playlist on how to make different types of rope bowls. Within that playlist you will find how to add a lid! “How to shape your rope bowl and add an attached lid! Here’s the link to the playlist. ruclips.net/p/PLp6o7Vy1aS_X3YAB8rzu2g01VwfZ67gEg

I love this square basket and your video and the instruction is wonderful. But, I need to ask. Do you use 1/4" cord to account for the additional bulk of the fabric wrap, or is this size rope just a preference thing?
Instead of starting with a square shape start with about 4” of rope and then bend down to form the next row tightly close to the first rope and sew the two together. Continue your rounds sewing around the two starter rows. This will form a rectangle basket. Vary the length of the two first cords to make a smaller or larger rectangle basket
Thank you for your tutorial. It is easy to follow although I will admit running on my I pad as I sew. I “Sew Along with Patti” 😁. I have made two of your large baskets and they were very well received. One was for my daughter and she loved it so much she asked for two more for the shelf on her nightstand. Do you see what you get me into! Do you have any suggestions for creating a rectangular basket? I am trying to figure out how to design the base so it is 2X or 2½X longer than it is wide. Its all your fault; your baskets are just too lovely! Hugs and Stay Safe from Vancouver Canada
Hahah Thanks for the fun comment. They are very addicting. Glad they have been well received! It’s a bit tricky to get the perfect rectangle shape. The length of your first rows will determine how wide it will be. Not sure if you have watched my oval basket. That will help on how to start a basket for a rectangle shape rather than a circle. Here’s the link to have a look. ruclips.net/video/NqnIpdsnfns/видео.html
Hi ! I love this square rope bowl. I’m wondering if you make custom sized bowls? I’m looking for one that is 24” square and 5” tall with handles. - thx! Gab
The only non-plastic rope I could find was this really rough sisal stuff, but, it's actually fine because the fabric covers it and the roughness probably adds some stability fwiw. Sewing machine might have trouble with the thicker ones, they seem more dense than this soft cotton cord.
I have watched nearly all of your videos on rope baskets. Thank you for posting and for all the great tips. I especially like this one on the square basket. Thanks for leaving in errors and explaining how to fix them. Very helpful videos.

Thanks. For a rectangle just make your first length about 6” long and start your base from there.
So about 3 loonpies about 6 inches long?

Pretty and creative. Thank you.
Thanks JoAnne and thanks for watching.
Amazing video!!!!
Thanks so much!
They are all so lovely. Have you ever used tie dye or stain on these cotton rope baskets?
I have really learned so much from you. Do you do a video on how to do the rope lids for bowls?
Yes, I sure do. I have a whole playlist on how to make different types of rope bowls. Within that playlist you will find how to add a lid! “How to shape your rope bowl and add an attached lid! Here’s the link to the playlist. ruclips.net/p/PLp6o7Vy1aS_X3YAB8rzu2g01VwfZ67gEg
It’s always a pleasure to watch your tutorials and your creations.
Do you have macrame baskets?
Thank you.
Ahh, thanks Helena for your sweet comment. Much appreciated.
I do not have any macrame basket tutorials but I have lots of other macrame tutorials if you want to check those out. Here's a link to my macrame playlist

Crafty Patti, I follow them. Thanks.
Awesome video, thanks!
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!
love this!
Thank you!
I love this square basket and your video and the instruction is wonderful. But, I need to ask. Do you use 1/4" cord to account for the additional bulk of the fabric wrap, or is this size rope just a preference thing?
It is my preference to use the 1/4” rope. It makes for a stiffer basket. The smaller cord makes a flimsy basket. I like my baskets to be more rigid.
Thank you. That's what I figured. I think I have one roll of 1/4" which I will deinitely use for your square basket.
Perfect!
Thank you for this tutorial. If I want to make a rectangle basket would I just add a few more coils to make the starter row rectangular?
- thx! Gab
Glad you love the square rope basket. Unfortunately I don’t do any custom orders or sell any of my crafts at this point in time.
Lindo, amei. Obrigada por compartilhar!

Beautiful, I love it. Thanks for sharing!
Você é muito bem-vindo!
You are very welcome!
The only non-plastic rope I could find was this really rough sisal stuff, but, it's actually fine because the fabric covers it and the roughness probably adds some stability fwiw. Sewing machine might have trouble with the thicker ones, they seem more dense than this soft cotton cord.
Sisal will be hard to sew through. Might break a few needles.
The cotton rope is better for sewing. Hope you can find some online perhaps.
